Victor Ravenshade did not sleep.

He claimed he did.

Nobody believed him.

Kael found him in the dining room before sunrise, sitting alone with a cup of cold water and staring at nothing.

No bread.

No jokes.

No apple.

That was how Kael knew the situation was serious.

He entered quietly.

Victor looked up.

My lord.

Kael sat across from him.

You look terrible.

Thank you.

Did you sleep?

Yes.

How long?

Victor looked toward the window.

Enough.

That means no.

Victor rubbed both hands across his face.

Kael did not push immediately.

The room remained quiet.

Outside, Aurelia had not fully awakened yet.

The Coliseum bells had not rung.

No crowds.

No heralds.

No noble banners filling the roads.

For a few minutes, the greatest city in the Empire felt almost normal.

Victor finally spoke.

What happens if I fail today?

Kael leaned back.

You go back to Blackwood.

Victor looked at him.

That’s it?

What were you expecting?

Kael thought.

Public execution?

Victor’s mouth moved slightly.

Maybe exile.

For failing an examination?

Darius would’ve mentioned that.

Probably.

Victor looked down at the table.

I mean after.

Black Dragon.

Training.

Everything.

Kael understood.

The real question.

Does failure mean you stop being one of us?

Victor nodded once.

Kael answered immediately.

No.

Victor looked up.

You remain Black Dragon.

You remain one of my soldiers.

You remain Victor Ravenshade.

Darius will probably make your life miserable trying to fix whatever failed you.

Victor smiled weakly.

That sounds right.

Kael continued.

If you fail and want to try again later, you can.

If you fail and decide knighthood isn’t what you want anymore, that’s also your choice.

Victor looked toward the window.

I still want it.

Good.

Then earn it.

Victor’s expression tightened.

What if wanting it too much makes me stupid again?

Kael smiled faintly.

Then remember what happened every time you were stupid.

That list is long.

Useful, then.

Victor laughed once.

Quiet.

Better.

Kael stood.

Eat something.

Victor looked toward the kitchen.

I don’t think I can.

Kael walked toward the door.

Then Darius is going to make you run an Imperial examination on an empty stomach.

Victor immediately stood.

I’m eating.

Kael smiled.

Fear remained educational.

By breakfast, all five Blackwood candidates were awake.

Nobody spoke much.

Damien Ravenmoor ate normally.

Leon Ashford checked the buckle on one gauntlet twice.

Marcus Wintermere had somehow acquired another candle.

Kael stared.

Marcus looked defensive.

It helps.

Victor pointed.

He’s carrying training trauma into the Imperial Knight Examination.

Marcus ignored him.

Elias Thorn held yesterday’s hidden-fold execution order.

Still.

Kael looked at it.

You’re bringing that?

Elias nodded.

Why?

Reminder.

Of?

Elias folded it once.

Read everything.

Fair.

Hugo Stone entered carrying their cleaned equipment.

No weapons today unless summoned for final review.

Still inspected them?

Yes.

Why?

Because they exist.

Kael nodded.

No arguing with that.

Then Darius entered.

Everyone straightened.

He looked over the table.

Eat.

They were already eating.

Victor whispered.

Very useful instruction.

Darius’s eyes moved toward him.

Victor immediately took another bite.

Darius looked at all five.

Today is not a tournament.

Marcus glanced toward the table.

Nobody said anything.

Your faces did.

Kael smiled.

That one truly had spread.

Darius continued.

Today the Empire looks backward.

Foundation.

Judgment.

Command.

Conduct.

Registry history.

Legal knowledge.

Healer reports.

Your previous failures.

Your current weaknesses.

Everything.

He looked toward Marcus.

A strong final answer does not erase three days of poor control.

Marcus nodded.

Then Victor.

A good rescue does not erase a habit of chasing excitement.

Victor nodded.

Leon.

Reliability is not immunity from mistakes.

Yes, Sir.

Elias.

Good instincts without procedure remain dangerous.

Understood.

Damien.

Leadership does not mean every decision you make becomes correct because others followed it.

Damien lowered his head slightly.

Yes, Sir.

Darius looked at them all.

Do not walk into the determination room trying to perform the person you think the judges want.

They have watched you for three days.

They will notice.

Silence.

Then Darius turned.

We leave in twenty minutes.

Victor looked toward Marcus.

Twenty minutes?

Marcus nodded.

Victor stared at his unfinished breakfast.

I suddenly understand why he told us to eat.

Kael smiled.

Progress.

The Imperial Coliseum felt different that morning.

No arena obstacles.

No temporary village.

No mock fort.

No weapon lanes.

The sand had been cleared.

Only five raised platforms remained across the central floor.

Each held a long table.

Registry officials.

Healers.

Legal assessors.

Military witnesses.

And one Imperial Shield assigned to rotating panels.

The fifth platform held Grand Herald Ken and the central Registry authority.

Kael looked down from the sponsor tier.

This seems less dramatic.

Sir Corren Valehart stood beside him.

Wait until someone’s entire future is decided by a man with spectacles and twelve pieces of parchment.

Registrar Elric Dane heard from behind them.

Proper records are dramatic.

Kael looked back.

To you.

Elric adjusted his spectacles.

Correct.

Lily sat beside Edwin.

She held House Kael’s copy of the proposed Black Dragon Knight registration.

Not active yet.

Waiting.

Everything was waiting.

The candidates.

The House title.

The tournament bracket.

The Imperial ball.

All of it depended on today.

Kael looked toward the Imperial balcony.

The Emperor had not yet arrived.

Most heirs had.

Cassian sat with Seris Vaelor.

Adrian had arrived in full Third Legion formalwear.

Seraphine occupied her section with Calista Veyne nearby.

Elena sat beside Elara.

Marcus Asterion spoke with two military officers.

Other heirs filled the long balcony.

Kael recognized some immediately.

Others he knew better by name than personality.

That would change eventually.

Not today.

Today belonged to candidates.

Grand Herald Ken raised his staff.

Two hundred eleven candidates remain.

The Coliseum responded with applause.

Some of those who had failed earlier still sat in the public stands.

Kael noticed.

Interesting.

They had not all gone home.

Perhaps they wanted to see who continued.

Perhaps they wanted to study.

Perhaps some simply wanted to watch the bracket.

The Herald continued.

Today begins Final Imperial Knight Determination.

Candidates will be called by Registry number.

Each panel may confirm provisional recognition, request additional review, impose examination failure, or defer determination pending a final corrective trial.

The stands murmured.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Deferred?

Rare.

Darius answered.

Means they saw enough to avoid failing someone, but not enough to confidently pass them.

What happens?

Specific test based on concern.

Today?

Usually.

Kael nodded.

More uncertainty.

Good.

The Herald continued.

Candidates provisionally recognized as Imperial Knights today are not yet permitted to use the formal title until the closing proclamation of the examination phase.

So they pass but don’t become Sir immediately.

Correct.

The Herald raised his voice.

And only those cleared for martial competition may proceed into the Imperial Coliseum Championship bracket.

There.

The crowd woke.

Victor, below in the candidate section, looked upward.

Kael could almost feel him trying not to look at Darius.

The Herald continued.

A candidate may pass knighthood and decline the Championship.

A candidate may pass knighthood but be withheld from the Championship due injury or medical concern.

A tournament withdrawal does not erase Imperial Knight recognition.

Good distinction.

Then the first name was called.

The process was slower than the previous stages.

Much slower.

Each candidate stood alone.

Records reviewed.

Questions asked.

Some only took five minutes.

Some fifteen.

One candidate from a Baronial House was failed almost immediately when a Registry clerk revealed he had lied about prior military punishment.

His sponsor looked furious.

Not at the judges.

At him.

Another independent candidate passed after nearly twenty minutes of questioning about a fight from four years earlier.

One woman from House Serrane was provisionally approved but medically withheld from the bracket because of a cracked rib from yesterday.

She cried.

Not because she failed.

Because she had passed and still lost her chance at the Golden Laurel.

Countess Aveline Serrane descended personally to speak with her afterward.

Kael watched.

Another name.

Another relationship.

The examination kept revealing people.

Brennar Holt was called before any Blackwood candidate.

He stood before Sir Garran Holtane’s panel.

No relation.

Kael had already confirmed that twice.

Sir Garran read from the record.

Brennar Holt.

Thirty-eight.

Provincial guard captain.

Nineteen years service.

Brennar nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Why seek knighthood now?

Brennar thought.

Because I’ve spent nineteen years leading people without the authority to represent them beyond my province.

Explain.

Brennar looked toward the public stands.

If I travel outside my governor’s territory, my rank means less.

Imperial knighthood is recognized everywhere under Imperial law.

I want to carry that recognition when escorting people, negotiating with military posts, or representing provincial security.

Sir Garran nodded.

Practical.

Yes, Sir.

You also wrote family prestige.

Brennar smiled faintly.

My daughter added that.

The crowd laughed.

Garran almost did.

Then his tone hardened.

Your command review found you volunteered before determining whether staying behind was strategically correct.

Yes.

Why?

Habit.

From?

Guard work.

Someone is hurt, I help.

Garran leaned forward.

Good habit?

Usually.

Always?

No.

What changed?

Brennar looked toward the Blackwood candidates.

I learned that service can become another form of pride if I assume I’m always the person who should solve it.

Kael smiled faintly.

Good answer.

Sir Garran closed the record.

Provisional recognition approved.

Brennar’s eyes closed.

Just once.

Then Garran added.

Championship clearance approved.

Brennar bowed.

Thank you, Sir.

One.

Not Blackwood.

But one of the eight who had traveled with them.

Mira smiled from the holding section.

Edric nodded.

Victor looked even more nervous.

Mira Solenne was called next.

Her panel included Lady Seris Vaelor.

Seris looked through Mira’s history.

Rivergate Guild.

C-rank.

Monster hunting.

Escort work.

Two disciplinary marks.

Mira smiled.

Minor.

Seris looked up.

One involved breaking a guild contractor’s nose.

Mira’s smile faded slightly.

He struck a healer.

Seris looked down again.

Report confirms.

The crowd laughed.

Kael did too.

Seris continued.

Why knight?

Mira answered immediately.

Access.

Explain.

Some ruins, military roads, protected territories, noble contracts, and expedition routes require recognized Imperial standing.

Knighthood opens doors.

Seris raised an eyebrow.

Dangerous reason.

Mira nodded.

Useful reason.

Do you care about service?

Yes.

Honor?

Usually.

That drew laughter.

Seris did not smile.

Define usually.

Mira thought.

I care more about doing what is right than looking honorable while doing it.

Interesting.

Seris looked toward the judges beside her.

Then back.

Suppose a lord hires you to escort a caravan and halfway through you discover the cargo is legally owned but morally disgusting.

Slaves?

Kael’s attention sharpened.

The entire Imperial section became quieter.

Human slavery was practiced across many human kingdoms and tolerated in various Imperial external dealings, though Kael’s own future position against it was becoming sharper.

Mira did not answer immediately.

If legal under Imperial law?

Seris nodded.

Mira’s expression tightened.

I complete the contract if abandoning it would put innocent people in danger.

Then I never work for the lord again.

Seris asked.

Even if you despise the cargo?

Yes.

Unless the law itself gives me grounds to intervene.

Kael studied her.

Not heroic.

Not satisfying.

But legally coherent.

Seris continued.

And if the enslaved person asks you to help them escape?

Mira’s jaw tightened.

Then I have a problem.

The crowd murmured.

Seris waited.

Mira continued.

Because legal and right may not be the same thing.

But a knight can’t make private law every time they hate something.

So I’d need another path.

Find legal protection.

Buy freedom if possible.

Expose unlawful treatment.

Something.

Seris studied her.

You dislike your own answer.

Yes.

Good.

Mira frowned.

Seris continued.

People who enjoy every answer to difficult law questions are usually dangerous.

Kael looked toward Darius.

He nodded slightly.

Mira passed.

Championship clearance approved.

She walked away looking more thoughtful than happy.

That suited her.

Edric Vale went third.

House Varrow’s noble section filled with blue and silver.

Lord Varrow himself had arrived.

Kael saw him for the first time.

A man in his late fifties, long blond-gray hair, narrow face, blue formal coat with the silver fox clasp.

Not high nobility.

Lord.

Landed House.

Enough influence to matter.

Edric stood before Sir Calista Veyne.

She read his prior history aloud.

Failed Knight Examination seven years ago.

Cause:

Abandoned simulated wounded retainer while pursuing objective.

Edric’s jaw tightened.

Then she read this year’s record.

Foundation pass.

Service trial conduct warning.

Command trial pass.

House loyalty concern observed.

Public requisition scenario corrected after initial unlawful compliance.

Calista looked up.

Why are you better now?

Edric seemed surprised by the question.

Better?

You failed seven years ago.

You may pass today.

What changed?

Edric thought.

I stopped believing training made me finished.

Calista’s eyes sharpened.

Who taught you that?

Edric glanced toward Darius.

Then toward Blackwood.

Failure.

Better answer.

Calista leaned back.

Lord Varrow instructed you to recruit newly recognized knights.

Yes.

Do you still intend to?

Edric looked toward the noble section.

Lord Varrow watched.

Everyone watched.

Edric answered carefully.

I intend to speak honestly with candidates who are free to hear offers.

I will not pressure them during the examination.

I will not deceive them.

And I will not approach anyone after they swear another House oath.

Calista nodded.

Correct.

Then:

If Lord Varrow orders you to do otherwise?

Edric became still.

This was the real question.

He looked toward Lord Varrow.

His sponsor gave nothing away.

Edric answered.

Then I tell him the order would dishonor the title he sponsored me to earn.

Silence.

Kael looked toward Lord Varrow.

The man’s expression did not change.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

Once.

Calista saw it.

Provisional recognition approved.

Edric exhaled.

Championship clearance approved.

The House Varrow section applauded.

Not wildly.

Proudly.

Edric bowed to the panel.

Then to his lord.

Seven years.

Failure.

Return.

Pass.

Kael liked that.

Then came the Black Dragon names.

Not all together.

The Registry did not care about dramatic convenience.

Marcus Wintermere was first.

He stood before Lady Seris.

Of course.

Kael almost laughed.

Marcus looked as though he would rather fight three opponents at once.

Seris opened his record.

Aura reserve.

High.

Aura regulation.

Inconsistent but improving.

Foundation warning.

Judgment warning.

Conduct review improved.

Weapon fundamentals acceptable with high power variance.

She looked up.

Why should the Empire make you a knight?

Marcus answered too quickly.

Because I’m strong enough.

The entire Blackwood section froze.

Victor covered his face.

Darius did not move.

Seris stared at Marcus.

Is that your answer?

Marcus realized.

No.

Seris waited.

Marcus breathed.

Started again.

Because I think I can become someone worth trusting with strength.

Better.

Not complete.

Marcus nodded.

I know.

Seris looked toward the Aura record.

You have more reserve than many recognized knights.

Yes, Lady.

You also nearly broke a Foundation barrier because another candidate passed you.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Yes.

You opened a gate during judgment without verifying a civilian claim.

Yes.

You almost used excessive Aura against a simulated mob.

Yes.

Why should I approve you?

Marcus looked down.

For several seconds, Kael thought he had no answer.

Then Marcus looked up.

Maybe you shouldn’t.

The Coliseum shifted.

Seris’s expression did not.

Continue.

Marcus swallowed.

If you’re asking whether I’m finished, I’m not.

If you’re asking whether I never make bad decisions, I do.

But every time they showed me one, I changed something.

My Aura.

My temper.

How I listen.

Where I stand.

He paused.

I used to think strength meant if I could solve a problem, I should.

Now I think strength means I have to be more careful because I can make a mistake bigger than somebody weaker.

Silence.

Kael felt something settle.

That was Marcus.

Not polished.

Not legal language.

His own lesson.

Seris looked toward Darius.

Darius remained stone.

She looked back.

Your control remains your largest concern.

I know.

If recognized, will you continue formal Aura regulation training?

Yes.

Under whom?

Marcus looked toward Darius.

If he’ll keep teaching me.

Darius answered from the judge observation section.

Unfortunately.

Laughter broke the tension.

Marcus smiled despite himself.

Seris waited until the crowd settled.

Provisional recognition approved.

Marcus froze.

Then:

Championship clearance approved with healer recheck before first bout.

His eyes widened.

He bowed deeply.

Thank you, Lady.

Seris added.

Wintermere.

Marcus looked up.

The Golden Laurel is not permission to forget the candle.

The Blackwood section erupted in laughter.

Marcus looked betrayed.

Victor nearly fell out of his seat.

Kael laughed loud enough that Lily elbowed him.

Marcus walked away muttering.

He had passed.

Victor’s number appeared next.

He stood before Sir Darius Valen.

The entire Blackwood section groaned.

Not because they doubted Darius.

Because Victor’s suffering was inevitable.

Victor approached.

Sir.

Darius looked down at the record.

Ravenshade.

Yes, Sir.

Prior preliminary failure.

Yes, Sir.

Cause?

Victor answered without waiting.

Pursued target.

Abandoned simulated injured teammate and civilian.

Why?

Wanted the win.

Why?

Victor thought.

Wanted people to see me do something important.

Darius looked up.

Do you still?

Yes.

The honesty surprised people.

Victor continued.

I still want people to know my name.

Darius’s expression did not change.

Good.

Victor blinked.

Sir?

Pretending ambition vanished would mean you learned nothing.

Victor nodded slowly.

Darius continued.

What changed?

I don’t want the name remembered for the wrong reason.

Silence.

Kael remembered Victor’s father.

Seventeen years in a levy.

Came home injured.

Unremembered.

Darius knew too.

Why do you want Sir?

Victor looked toward the Hall of Champions corridor beyond the arena.

Then toward the Black Dragon Banner.

Because my father served seventeen years and almost nobody remembered.

I used to think a title would make sure that never happened to me.

Kael’s expression tightened.

Victor continued.

Now I think the title only makes people remember what you did with it.

Darius watched him.

That was a better answer than Kael expected from Victor.

Maybe better than Victor expected from himself.

Darius looked down.

This examination:

Foundation pass.

Weapon fundamentals pass.

Aura pass with excitement suppression warning.

Service trial passed after abandoning pursuit to protect civilian.

Command trial passed after following reserve command.

No major conduct violation.

He closed the record.

If I tell you today that you failed, what do you do?

Victor went still.

This was not in the written record.

The Coliseum quieted.

Victor answered slowly.

Ask why.

And if I refuse to explain?

I go back to Blackwood.

Train.

Figure out what I missed.

Then?

Try again.

Darius leaned forward.

No anger?

Victor smiled faintly.

Plenty.

The crowd laughed.

Darius almost did.

Almost.

Victor continued.

But anger doesn’t make the result wrong.

Darius nodded once.

Provisional recognition approved.

Victor’s face went blank.

He had expected another question.

Then the words reached him.

Approved.

Sir?

Darius stared.

Do not make me repeat it.

Victor turned toward Kael.

His mouth opened.

Kael pointed at him.

Do not scream.

Victor closed it.

Barely.

Darius continued.

Championship clearance approved.

Victor looked back.

Thank you, Sir.

Then Darius added.

Ravenshade.

Victor froze.

Yes?

Do not make me regret it.

Victor’s smile disappeared into something more serious.

I won’t.

Darius looked at him.

You might.

Victor blinked.

Darius continued.

Every knight eventually does something their teacher dislikes.

Your responsibility is not perfection.

It is correction.

Victor nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Then walked away.

Not running.

For once.

Leon Ashford stood before Sir Garran Holtane.

His record was the least dramatic.

That became the problem.

Sir Garran looked through it.

Foundation pass.

Weapon fundamentals pass.

Aura acceptable.

Service and judgment high.

Command conduct high.

No major warning.

Darius preliminary endorsement.

Garran looked up.

You are boring.

Leon blinked.

Sir?

The crowd laughed.

Garran did not.

Your record has fewer dramatic mistakes than the others.

Yes, Sir.

Does that mean you’re better?

Leon thought.

No.

Why?

Because some of my mistakes don’t look dramatic.

Good.

Name one.

Leon answered.

I follow competent people too easily.

Kael remembered Sir Maelin’s observation.

Garran nodded.

Explain.

If Damien gives a good order, I tend to accept it quickly.

If Darius gives one, faster.

If someone has already proven themselves, I stop checking as hard.

Garran’s expression sharpened.

Dangerous.

Yes.

How do you fix it?

Leon looked toward the Imperial balcony.

Remember that trust should make me listen more carefully, not less.

Kael liked that.

Garran did too.

What kind of knight do you want to become?

Leon thought.

Reliable.

Garran frowned.

Small answer.

Leon shook his head.

I don’t think so.

The Coliseum quieted.

Leon continued.

People remember champions.

Generals.

Heroes.

But most days, someone needs a person who arrives when promised, holds when ordered, tells the truth, and doesn’t disappear when things get ugly.

I want to be that.

Silence.

Kael felt that one differently.

No grand ambition.

No Golden Laurel.

No command dream.

Reliable.

Blackwood needed that more than another legend.

Sir Garran closed the record.

Provisional recognition approved.

Leon bowed.

Championship clearance approved.

Another bow.

Then Garran added.

Ashford.

Yes, Sir.

Reliability becomes dangerous if you confuse it with predictability.

Leon nodded.

Understood.

He left.

Three Black Dragon candidates passed.

Elias Thorn approached Sir Calista’s panel.

Kael did not know what to expect.

Calista had watched his surrender test.

His observation patterns.

His quietness.

She opened the record.

Adaptive defense.

Moderate Aura.

Strong observation.

Delayed communication concern.

Incomplete legal procedure during execution trial.

Second-command performance acceptable.

She looked up.

You refused an execution order.

Yes, Lady.

Without finding the legal defect in the document.

Yes.

Would you refuse again?

Elias thought.

I’d inspect the document first.

Calista’s mouth moved slightly.

Then?

If the order still appeared unlawful or dishonorable, yes.

Even from Lord Kael?

The entire Blackwood section tightened.

Kael leaned forward.

Elias looked directly toward him.

Then back at Calista.

Yes.

Kael did not move.

Calista noticed.

Why?

Because my oath to him would require judgment too.

You haven’t sworn it yet.

No.

Then why speak as if you have?

Elias looked toward the Black Dragon Banner.

Because I’ve already decided what kind of oath I would be willing to swear.

Darius’s eyes shifted.

Kael felt that.

Not commitment to House Kael yet.

Commitment to the type of service.

Calista continued.

Suppose Kael orders an immediate execution during battle because a prisoner carries information that could cost hundreds of lives if delayed.

Still refuse?

Elias hesitated.

Good.

It was not simple.

He answered.

I ask whether there is time for verification.

If there isn’t—

He stopped.

Calista waited.

If there truly isn’t, and the prisoner remains an immediate threat even while captured, then the situation changes.

Calista nodded.

So your refusal is conditional.

My judgment is.

Good.

Elias breathed slightly easier.

Then she asked.

Why do you wait too long to speak?

He froze.

Kael knew that was the real weakness.

Elias looked down.

Because I want to be sure.

Calista replied.

Certainty often arrives after the moment it could help.

Yes.

What will you do?

Speak earlier.

Even if wrong?

Elias considered.

Say what I know and how sure I am.

Not wait until I know everything.

Calista nodded.

Provisional recognition approved.

Elias’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Kael saw the relief.

Championship clearance approved.

Four.

Damien Ravenmoor was last.

Not intentionally.

Registry order.

But the Coliseum felt as though it had been arranged.

Because Damien’s name had traveled farther through the noble stands than any other Blackwood candidate.

Kael could feel the attention before Damien reached the platform.

Duke Renald Carthain leaned forward.

Cassian looked down.

Prince Marcus stopped writing.

Elara watched.

Marquis Oren Velmire’s niece whispered something into her uncle’s ear.

Marchioness Sabine Greymark turned.

Seraphine watched too.

That bothered Kael.

Sir Garran Holtane chaired Damien’s panel.

Lady Seris joined him.

So did Darius.

Three Shields.

Not standard.

Kael frowned.

Sir Corren answered quietly.

Command review recommendation.

They want broader judgment.

Damien stood alone.

No spear.

No Black Dragon soldiers.

No Kael beside him.

Good.

This belonged to him.

Sir Garran opened the record.

Damien Ravenmoor.

Black Dragon soldier.

Rotating patrol command.

Preliminary endorsement for Knight Examination from Sir Darius Valen.

Aura reserve moderate.

Control high.

Leadership assessment strong.

Foundation pass.

Service pass.

Command review high recommendation.

Damien nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Garran looked up.

Why seek knighthood?

Damien answered.

At first?

The word changed the question.

Garran nodded.

At first.

Recognition.

Rank.

People listening when I spoke.

Darius’s expression remained unreadable.

And now?

Damien looked toward the Black Dragon Banner.

Responsibility.

Too easy.

Seris said it.

Kael’s eyebrow rose.

Damien looked toward her.

Lady?

That answer is what candidates think judges want.

Try again.

Damien became still.

Good.

He thought.

Then said:

I still want recognition.

Seris watched.

Damien continued.

I want command someday.

More men.

Real authority.

I want people to know I earned it.

I want to become somebody important enough that when I tell soldiers what to do, they believe I’ve earned the right.

Kael felt the honesty.

Damien was not pretending humility erased ambition.

Garran asked.

Then why knighthood instead of officer promotion?

Damien thought.

Because command tells people where I sit in a military structure.

Knighthood tells people what standard I accepted when I got there.

Darius’s eyes sharpened.

Good.

Garran continued.

Your fort scenario.

You disobeyed a direct written order concerning the south gate.

Yes.

Would you do so in real war?

If the situation was the same, yes.

Even if afterward your commander stripped your rank?

Yes.

Why?

Because keeping a rank after getting civilians killed to protect broken wood wouldn’t make me a better officer.

The Coliseum murmured.

Seris asked.

You left a wounded candidate exposed.

Damien’s jaw tightened.

Yes.

You regret it?

Yes.

Would you retrieve him if replaying the exact moment?

Damien paused.

No.

Kael leaned forward.

Interesting.

Seris did too.

Why?

Because in the exact moment, pulling two defenders probably collapses the lane.

Then why regret it?

Because I should have planned casualty extraction before the fighting started.

Seris nodded.

Good.

Darius finally spoke.

Damien.

Sir.

Who do you serve?

Damien looked toward Kael.

House Kael.

Darius’s expression hardened.

Wrong.

The entire Coliseum shifted.

Kael felt that one.

Damien looked back.

Sir?

You have not sworn House Kael’s knight oath.

You are a Black Dragon soldier.

Your military service is currently to House Kael.

But I asked who you serve.

Damien understood.

Or started to.

He answered:

Blackwood.

Darius shook his head.

Again.

Damien looked toward the stands.

The people?

Darius waited.

Damien thought longer.

Kael watched.

This was not a trick question with one phrase.

It was Darius forcing him through layers.

House.

Territory.

People.

Banner.

Oath.

Damien finally answered.

I serve the duty I accept.

Silence.

Darius’s expression changed.

Damien continued.

Right now that duty is Black Dragon.

House Kael.

Blackwood.

If I swear as a knight later, then I serve that oath too.

If one day I command elsewhere, I serve whatever lawful responsibility I take there.

He paused.

But I don’t think I’m supposed to serve a person so completely that I stop knowing why I’m following them.

Kael felt the answer before the crowd reacted.

Darius looked at him for a long time.

Then nodded.

Once.

Garran leaned forward.

If Prince Cassian offers you command after the examination?

Damien’s expression tightened.

There it was.

Every noble listening.

Cassian remained completely still.

Damien answered.

I hear him.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Good.

Correct.

Darius had told him to.

Garran continued.

Duke Carthain offers land?

I hear him.

House Kael offers less?

Damien looked toward Kael.

Then back.

I compare what matters.

Money?

Yes.

Rank?

Yes.

Land?

Yes.

Command?

Yes.

Loyalty?

Yes.

Kael almost smiled.

Damien was not making this easy for him.

Good.

Seris asked.

What matters most?

Damien took time.

Whether the place I’m serving is becoming something I want to help build.

That answer hit Kael differently.

Blackwood.

Not wealthy.

Not finished.

Becoming.

Duke Renald’s expression changed.

Cassian leaned back slightly.

Seraphine stopped smiling.

Darius looked down at Damien’s record.

Then closed it.

Sir Garran spoke.

Provisional recognition approved.

The crowd erupted.

Damien did not move.

Then Lady Seris added.

Championship clearance approved.

Damien bowed.

Deeply.

Not to Kael.

To the panel.

Correct.

All five.

Every Black Dragon candidate had passed provisional determination.

Kael sat back.

For the first time in several days, he let himself feel it.

They had done it.

Not knights yet.

Not until proclamation.

But cleared.

Recognized.

Ready.

Lily smiled beside him.

All five.

Kael nodded.

All five.

Edwin’s expression remained dignified.

But his eyes had softened.

Hugo Stone looked relieved enough to pretend he was checking a tool pouch.

Victor was already squeezing Marcus around the shoulders.

Marcus shoved him away.

Leon laughed.

Elias simply stared at the arena floor.

Damien returned to them.

Victor grabbed him too.

Damien endured it for approximately two seconds.

Then shoved him away.

Blackwood had five provisional Imperial Knights.

The rest of the day mattered.

Kael forced himself to watch.

Two hundred eleven had entered determination.

One hundred seventy-four received provisional recognition.

Twenty-one were deferred to corrective trials.

Sixteen failed outright.

Of the one hundred seventy-four recognized, one hundred fifty-two received Championship clearance.

Some declined.

Twelve.

One because of family emergency.

Three because of injuries despite clearance.

Others simply did not want tournament combat.

That left one hundred forty competitors entering division brackets.

The division counts finalized:

Swordsman/Knight — 64

Spear/Lancer — 32

Guardian/Heavy — 16

Magic Swordsman — 16

Special Martial — 12

Kael frowned.

Twelve isn’t a clean bracket.

Sir Corren nodded.

Four receive seeded byes from classification scoring.

Kael looked over.

Seeded?

Top four ranking performances within that division skip the opening elimination and enter quarterfinal equivalent.

Fair?

Based on cumulative combat-specific assessment.

Registry uses it when division counts don’t fit clean elimination.

Kael nodded.

Good.

Not everything needed sixty-four.

Then came the closing proclamation.

All one hundred seventy-four provisionally recognized candidates stood on the Coliseum floor.

Kael saw the five Black Dragon candidates among them.

Damien.

Leon.

Victor.

Marcus.

Elias.

Mira.

Brennar.

Edric.

All eight who had left Blackwood.

That felt unlikely.

Not impossible.

Earned.

Kael was glad the story had shown why.

Grand Herald Ken stood before them.

The Emperor rose.

The entire Coliseum followed.

Augustus Aurelius Asterion looked down over the newly recognized candidates.

His voice did not need amplification.

Yet magic carried it anyway.

Today, you entered this arena as candidates.

Some of you came beneath banners older than your family names.

Some came beneath military colors.

Some beneath noble Houses.

Some beneath Guild insignia.

Some beneath nothing but your own name.

His crimson eyes moved over the field.

The Empire does not ask where strength was born.

It asks what strength becomes when given responsibility.

Kael watched his father.

Augustus continued.

You have been tested in body.

Judgment.

Command.

Conduct.

Law.

Restraint.

And service.

You have not proven yourselves perfect.

No knight ever has.

You have proven only that the Empire is willing to place the first measure of trust upon you.

The candidates stood absolutely still.

The Emperor raised one hand.

By the authority of the Imperial Throne and the Registry of Knights—

The entire Coliseum seemed to hold its breath.

—I recognize those confirmed today as Knights of the Asterion Empire.

The arena exploded.

Cheers.

Banners.

Families standing.

Nobles applauding.

Soldiers striking fists to armor.

Kael stood.

He did not care who saw.

Below, Victor looked upward like he had forgotten where he was.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Leon bowed his head.

Elias stared at the sand.

Damien stood straight.

Not smiling.

Then Victor hit him in the shoulder.

Damien finally smiled.

Just a little.

Grand Herald Ken’s voice rose over the noise.

Recognized knights may now bear the lawful title of Sir or Dame according to custom and Registry record.

Victor turned toward Marcus.

Kael couldn’t hear him.

He knew exactly what he said.

Sir Marcus.

Marcus shoved him.

The crowd laughed nearby.

Sir Darius watched from the Shield platform.

No smile.

Then Kael saw it.

Tiny.

Gone.

Enough.

The newly recognized knights received their basic Imperial insignia.

Silver-edged.

Not gold.

Not yet.

Each bore the Imperial Dragon above a narrow sword.

Registry number on the reverse.

Name recorded.

No House allegiance engraved beyond existing service designation.

That would come separately.

Household oath separate.

Exactly as intended.

Leon held his insignia carefully.

Victor stared at his.

Marcus turned his over twice.

Elias traced the edge.

Damien placed his against his chest, then lowered it.

Kael approached once they were released from the formal line.

Victor saw him first.

My lord.

Kael stopped.

Victor’s eyes were bright.

Say it.

Victor frowned.

Say what?

Kael smiled.

You know.

Victor understood.

He straightened dramatically.

Sir Victor Ravenshade.

Marcus groaned.

Kael laughed.

Sir Marcus Wintermere.

Marcus tried not to smile.

Failed.

Sir Leon Ashford.

Leon bowed his head.

Sir Elias Thorn.

Elias looked almost uncomfortable.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor.

Damien met Kael’s eyes.

There.

Five new titles.

Not Black Dragon Knights.

Not yet.

Important.

Kael looked at all of them.

Congratulations.

Victor blinked.

That’s it?

Kael raised an eyebrow.

You want a speech?

Kind of.

Darius approached.

No.

Victor looked betrayed.

Kael smiled.

The ball comes later.

The oath comes after your choices.

And before any of that—

Marcus looked toward the arena.

The bracket.

Darius’s expression tightened.

Yes.

The bracket.

The Hall of Brackets opened after sunset.

This time Darius allowed them to go.

Victor nearly sprinted.

Darius stopped him with one look.

Victor walked.

Fast.

Kael went with them.

So did Lily.

Hugo.

Mira.

Brennar.

Edric.

Sir Corren.

Sir Maelin.

And enough other newly recognized knights to make the corridor crowded.

The bracket hall was different from the Hall of Champions.

Temporary.

Brightly lit.

Five enormous boards.

Names written in black.

House insignia beside sponsored competitors.

Independent symbol where none.

Lines connecting every matchup.

Win.

Advance.

Lose.

Done.

Kael felt the atmosphere change instantly.

They had survived judgment.

Now competition returned.

People crowded the Swordsman/Knight bracket first.

Sixty-four names.

Victor found himself.

There!

Everyone looked.

ROUND OF 64

Sir Victor Ravenshade — House Kael / Black Dragon

versus

Sir Halden Pryce — House Serrane

Victor stared.

House Serrane.

Mira leaned closer.

I know him.

Victor looked horrified.

Of course you do.

How good?

Mira smiled.

Good enough.

That’s not helpful.

She shrugged.

Victor looked toward Kael.

I preferred not knowing.

Too late.

Marcus found his name.

His smile disappeared slightly.

Sir Marcus Wintermere — House Kael / Black Dragon

versus

Sir Otho Keld — House Carthain

Marcus looked toward the name.

House Carthain.

Kael remembered the Guardian candidate from the endurance course.

Not Otho.

Different man.

Darius spoke.

Otho Keld.

Thirty-three.

Household swordsman.

Experienced.

Marcus smiled.

Now.

That sounded like Marcus.

Leon found his.

Sir Leon Ashford — House Kael / Black Dragon

versus

Sir Joren Pellaris — Independent

Kael’s attention sharpened.

The gray-banner candidate.

Second attempt.

Former caravan guard.

Leon looked toward the name.

Independent.

Sir Corren nodded.

Older than you.

Twenty-nine.

Failed three years ago.

Returned.

Leon nodded.

Good.

Elias found his.

Sir Elias Thorn — House Kael / Black Dragon

versus

Sir Edric Vale — House Varrow

Silence.

Everyone turned.

Edric stared.

Elias looked at him.

Victor whispered.

Oh.

Mira smiled slowly.

That is cruel.

Edric folded his arms.

Bracket is bracket.

Elias nodded.

Agreed.

Kael looked toward Darius.

You knew?

No.

Good.

Real random-seeded structure.

Not story convenience.

The bracket had done what it was meant to do.

People who had trained together could meet immediately.

Edric stepped toward Elias.

No holding back.

Elias answered.

Wasn’t planning to.

Victor looked delighted.

Darius looked at him.

You are enjoying this too much.

Yes, Sir.

Then Darius pointed toward the opposite side.

Damien is not here.

Of course.

Spear division.

They moved.

Thirty-two names.

Damien found his quickly.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor — House Kael / Black Dragon

versus

Sir Torren Hask — Western Provincial Legion

Damien studied the name.

Know him?

Kael asked.

No.

Darius did.

Spearman.

Thirty-one.

Border service.

Long reach.

Strong forward pressure.

Damien’s eyes sharpened.

Good.

Kael looked farther down.

Potential future opponents.

He stopped himself.

Darius had trained him too well.

One fight first.

Then Mira found her name on the Swordsman board.

Dame Mira Solenne — Independent / Rivergate Guild

versus

Sir Callen Mor — House Avenor

She smiled.

Victor looked at her.

You know him too?

No.

Good.

Mira looked excited.

Brennar found his.

Sir Brennar Holt — Provincial Guard

versus

Sir Roderic Seln — House Carthain

Leon recognized the name immediately.

My squad commander.

Brennar looked toward him.

Good?

Leon nodded.

Very.

Brennar smiled.

Excellent.

Eight who had traveled from Blackwood.

Now potentially fighting each other.

Potentially eliminating one another.

The tournament had started before anyone stepped onto sand.

Marcus moved deeper into the bracket board.

His eyes followed the lines.

Round of 64.

Possible Round of 32.

Possible Round of 16.

Quarterfinal.

Semifinal.

Final.

Then he stopped.

Victor looked over his shoulder.

What?

Marcus pointed.

If we both keep winning—

Victor followed.

His expression changed.

Their bracket lines converged.

Not early.

Quarterfinal.

Victor slowly smiled.

Sir Marcus.

Marcus smiled back.

Sir Victor.

Darius stepped between them.

You both have one opponent.

They stopped.

Right.

Kael looked at the bracket again.

Leon and Mira’s lines could potentially meet in the Round of 16.

Elias and Edric already fought first round.

Brennar could face another Carthain knight if he survived.

Damien’s Spear bracket contained names Kael did not know yet.

That was good.

Readers needed new people.

New rivals.

Not only Blackwood fighting itself.

Then a crowd formed near the Magic Swordsman bracket.

Kael looked over.

Duke Carthain stood there with Rhydan Carthain.

Sixteen names.

Rhydan’s first opponent:

Dame Selene Arvor — House Elena

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Elena had a Magic Swordsman candidate.

Interesting.

Rhydan looked toward Kael.

Their eyes met.

He gave a small nod.

Kael returned it.

Not his bracket.

Not his fight.

But Kael would watch.

Magic Swordsmen remained rare.

He could learn.

Then the Golden Laurel display was unveiled.

Five examples.

One for each division.

Gold-edged Imperial knight insignia.

A small laurel engraving surrounding the Dragon.

Beautiful without being ridiculous.

Darius stood near the Swordsman display.

Victor noticed something.

Sir.

Darius looked over.

Where’s yours?

Darius’s expression changed.

Kael smiled.

Good question.

Sir Corren answered.

Stored in his private effects, presumably.

Victor looked horrified.

You don’t wear it?

No.

Why?

Darius answered.

Because people know my name.

Silence.

Marcus stared at him.

That was probably the most arrogant humble thing anyone had ever said.

Kael laughed.

Even Sir Maelin smiled.

Darius looked annoyed.

Victor pointed at the display.

If I win, I’m wearing mine everywhere.

Darius answered.

Then win first.

Victor stopped.

Yes, Sir.

The first tournament bouts would begin the following morning.

Not all sixty-four Swordsman matches in one day.

The Coliseum schedule spread opening rounds across two days.

Spear division too.

Guardian and Magic Swordsman would begin after.

Special Martial later that afternoon.

Kael looked at tomorrow’s schedule.

Victor first among Blackwood.

Leon later.

Damien in the afternoon.

Marcus the next morning.

Elias versus Edric tomorrow evening.

Good.

The story would breathe.

Each fight could matter.

No rushing.

Darius looked toward the candidates.

Tonight.

Weapon inspection.

Meal.

Then opponent preparation.

Victor’s eyes widened.

We can study them?

Yes.

You told us not to think about opponents before.

Before you earned the bracket.

Now you have one.

The difference landed.

Darius continued.

You will not memorize rumors.

You will study confirmed information.

Weapon.

Reach.

Known Aura tendencies.

Prior recorded tournament or military history if available.

No gossip.

No betting odds.

Victor looked disappointed.

Why no odds?

Because bookmakers profit from people confusing popularity with truth.

Kael nodded.

Good line.

Darius looked at him.

Do not encourage me.

Too late.

That night, House Kael’s lodging transformed into a war room.

Not literally.

But close.

Hugo checked Victor’s sword.

Darius reviewed Sir Halden Pryce’s Registry combat profile.

Sir Corren had access to public tournament records.

No private information.

Fair.

Victor sat at the table.

Halden Pryce.

Twenty-eight.

House Serrane.

Sword and small buckler.

Victor frowned.

Buckler.

Darius nodded.

Shorter sword than yours.

Good inside defense.

Aggressive counterfighter.

Victor looked interested.

Aura?

Moderate.

Control?

Good.

Weakness?

Darius looked at him.

You discover it.

Victor sighed.

Of course.

Known tendency?

Corren answered.

He prefers opponents to initiate.

Victor smiled.

Then I wait.

Darius shook his head.

If you change your entire natural style because of one sentence, he already controls you.

Victor’s smile faded.

Right.

Darius continued.

Fight your fight.

But understand his.

Kael sat nearby listening.

This was what the user had wanted from the tournament.

Details.

Strengths.

Weaknesses.

Adaptation.

Not random explosions.

Every fight a problem.

Victor’s first problem now had a name.

Sir Halden Pryce.

House Serrane.

Buckler.

Counterfighter.

Tomorrow, the Coliseum would stop asking whether Victor deserved knighthood.

The Empire had already answered yes.

Tomorrow, it would ask a much simpler and much crueler question.

Could he win?

Victor looked toward his silver knight insignia sitting beside his sword.

Then toward the blank place where a Golden Laurel might someday exist.

Darius noticed.

Ravenshade.

Victor looked up.

Forget the gold.

Victor nodded.

Darius pointed toward the written opponent profile.

One man.

One fight.

That is your entire world tomorrow.

Victor looked at Halden Pryce’s name.

His expression changed.

The nervousness remained.

So did the ambition.

But beneath both—

Focus.

Yes, Sir.

Outside, beyond the windows, the Imperial Coliseum burned with hundreds of lights.

Inside its bracket hall, lines waited to be filled.

Tomorrow the first names would move forward.

And the first newly recognized knights would discover how quickly a dream of becoming champion could end in a single fight.
