The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Mira Solenne did not ask for Dame Ilse Varen’s tournament record first.

She asked how many times Ilse had changed weapons.

Darius looked at her for several seconds before answering. ”Once.”

Mira leaned forward on the bench beneath the competitors’ gallery. ”When?”

”Three years ago. She entered her first Imperial tournament with a single longsword. The following year she switched to paired short blades. She has used them ever since.”

That interested Mira far more than the win-loss record spread across Darius’s report. She accepted the parchment and scanned the remaining notes while Kael stood nearby with Leon, Victor, Damien, and Marcus. Unlike Victor, Mira rarely needed to be told not to chase excitement. Her problem was different. She could find too many interesting possibilities in a fight and convince herself that choosing the strangest one automatically made it the smartest.

Darius had already punished that habit during her match against Dame Selene Arvor.

Mira tapped the report. ”She fights with two weapons, but she doesn’t fight like me.”

”No,” Darius said. ”Ilse uses paired blades to reduce uncertainty. You often use yours to create it.”

Mira smiled. ”That sounds insulting.”

”It is descriptive.”

Kael folded his arms and looked toward the page. Dame Ilse Varen was twenty-nine, a sworn knight attached to House Greymark’s military household. She had served under Marchioness Sabine Greymark for six years and spent two of those years attached to road-security operations near the western river districts. Her tournament record was strong without being spectacular. She had never reached an Imperial final, but she had twice made the quarterfinals.

More importantly, she rarely lost badly.

Leon noticed the same pattern. ”She doesn’t give away large exchanges.”

Darius nodded. ”Most fighters lose points in clusters. One mistake damages footing, which creates the second opening, which creates the third. Ilse usually breaks the sequence before that happens.”

Mira looked toward him. ”So she’s difficult to snowball.”

”Yes.”

Victor leaned against the wall. ”Then make her uncomfortable.”

Mira glanced over. ”You say that like it’s a strategy.”

”It worked for me.”

”You nearly walked out of bounds twice because Davren smiled at you.”

Victor’s expression changed. ”That is not how I remember it.”

Marcus laughed. ”It is exactly how I remember it.”

Darius took the report back before the conversation wandered further. ”Ilse’s discipline creates her own weakness.”

Mira’s attention sharpened. ”Which is?”

”She spends effort restoring structure after disruption.”

Mira smiled slowly.

Darius immediately raised one finger. ”Do not become excited.”

”That sounds promising.”

”That is exactly why I said it.”

Kael almost laughed, but Darius continued before anyone could interrupt. ”If you break her preferred spacing, she will usually rebuild it quickly. That does not mean you should spend twelve minutes being strange just to force resets. If the disruption costs you more than it costs her, you are helping her.”

Mira leaned back. ”So the chaos needs a purpose.”

”Yes.”

She sighed dramatically. ”You’ve ruined all my best qualities.”

”No. I’m trying to make them useful.”

The arena horn sounded once.

Five minutes.

Mira stood and reached for both tournament swords. They were shorter than standard longswords, balanced for quick changes in grip and angle. She rolled one in her right hand before checking the left.

Then she looked toward Darius. ”What should I expect in the first minute?”

Darius shook his head. ”Nothing.”

Mira frowned.

”You already know too much about what you want her to be,” he said. ”Spend the first minute learning what she actually is.”

That answer satisfied Mira more than a prediction would have.

She turned toward Kael.

He raised both hands. ”I have been instructed to say nothing.”

”Coward.”

”Improving coward.”

Mira grinned and walked toward the arena gate.

Dame Ilse Varen looked nothing like Mira expected.

That probably helped.

Kael had imagined someone severe after reading Darius’s report. Instead, Ilse entered with a relaxed expression and an easy gait, her dark blond hair tied behind her head and both short swords resting low at her sides. House Greymark’s stag-and-river emblem appeared on a small clasp at her shoulder rather than across a ceremonial cloak.

Marchioness Sabine Greymark sat in the noble gallery.

Sir Tavric Dorn was with her.

Victor noticed him immediately. ”He came to watch.”

Leon looked toward the arena. ”Greymark fighter.”

”He also recommended me to Sabine.”

”Yes.”

Victor frowned. ”You make everything less interesting.”

Leon smiled. ”Useful service.”

Below them, Mira and Ilse met at center.

Ilse saluted with both blades. ”Mira Solenne.”

Mira returned the gesture. ”Dame Ilse.”

”I watched your last match.”

”That seems unfair.”

Ilse smiled. ”You watched mine.”

”I did.”

”Then we are equally unfortunate.”

Mira’s smile widened.

The referee reviewed the rules. Twelve minutes. Three boundary violations meant elimination. Clean scoring strikes counted at the judges’ discretion. Weapon loss did not stop the match unless the official determined safety required it.

Both fighters acknowledged.

The referee stepped back.

The match began.

Mira did nothing unusual.

That was the first unusual thing.

She adopted a conventional paired-blade stance with one sword forward and one closer to the body. Ilse mirrored the distance without mirroring the stance. Her left-hand blade remained slightly lower, positioned more for interception than attack.

Mira advanced.

Ilse gave half a step.

Mira tested the right side.

Ilse blocked with her left blade and kept the second weapon ready.

Mira withdrew.

Nothing scored.

Victor frowned. ”She’s fighting normally.”

Darius stood near the railing. ”For now.”

Mira attacked again.

Simple diagonal cut.

Ilse caught it.

Mira followed with the second sword toward the ribs.

Ilse turned her body and redirected that too.

They separated.

No flourish.

No dropped weapon.

No strange footwork.

No theatrical false opening.

Ilse watched her carefully.

Mira attacked a third time.

Same first strike.

Ilse blocked.

This time Mira did not follow.

Ilse’s second sword moved anyway, prepared for the expected continuation.

Mira saw it.

Kael did too.

”There,” he said.

Darius nodded.

Mira had learned something.

Ilse’s defense was not rigid, but it was organized around preserving two layers. First blade solved the immediate threat. Second remained available to answer the next one.

Mira stepped away.

Ilse advanced for the first time.

Her right sword came toward Mira’s shoulder.

Mira blocked.

The left followed low.

Mira jumped back.

Ilse stopped rather than chasing.

The first minute ended without a score.

Mira smiled.

Ilse did not.

That made Mira smile more.

The first point came from Ilse.

Mira changed rhythm at ninety seconds.

She stepped forward with both swords held unusually close together, presenting what looked almost like a single central line. Ilse adjusted wider, clearly expecting Mira to split the attack late.

Mira did.

Right blade toward the shoulder.

Left toward the hip.

Ilse blocked both.

Then she did something Mira had not expected.

Instead of withdrawing, Ilse stepped between the two swords.

Her left blade pinned Mira’s right weapon outward while the right sword touched Mira’s upper chest.

Clean.

The judges signaled.

Ilse — 1

Mira backed away.

Not annoyed.

Interested.

Victor leaned forward. ”She entered between both weapons.”

Darius nodded. ”Mira created two threats and assumed that meant Ilse had two problems.”

Leon understood. ”Ilse treated the space between them as the real problem.”

Kael watched Mira reset.

The point had exposed something important.

Two weapons created options.

They also created a center.

If Mira spread them too far while attacking, the space between her own arms became accessible.

Ilse had gone straight through it.

Mira changed her stance.

This time the swords stayed asymmetrical.

One low.

One high.

Ilse approached more carefully.

Good.

Mira had made her pay attention.

Now the question was whether Mira could turn that attention into something useful.

At two minutes, Mira deliberately overextended her right sword.

Kael recognized the invitation immediately.

Ilse did too.

She attacked the exposed arm.

Mira released the sword.

It fell.

The crowd reacted.

Victor laughed. ”There she is.”

Ilse did not pause.

That mattered.

She had watched Mira’s previous match. She knew a dropped weapon could be bait.

Instead of chasing the disarm, Ilse attacked Mira’s body.

Mira retreated and used the remaining sword defensively.

Ilse pressed.

Mira gave ground twice.

Then kicked the fallen weapon backward with her heel.

It slid across the sand behind Ilse.

Ilse glanced toward it.

Only briefly.

Mira attacked.

Ilse blocked.

Mira stepped inside, shoulder low, and tried to turn Ilse away from the abandoned sword.

Ilse understood immediately.

She gave the turn willingly.

Mira frowned.

Then Ilse used the movement to drive her toward the boundary.

Mira had to disengage.

No score.

No recovered sword.

Mira found herself fighting with one blade while the second lay nearly ten feet away.

Victor smiled. ”That didn’t work.”

Darius looked at him. ”Not yet.”

Mira stopped trying to recover the sword.

That surprised Ilse.

For the next thirty seconds, Mira fought one-handed.

Her movement changed.

Less rotational.

More direct.

Ilse still possessed two blades, but Mira no longer presented the same paired-weapon geometry Ilse had studied.

Ilse tested her.

Mira blocked.

Retreated.

Ilse advanced.

Mira waited.

The second attack came low.

Mira avoided it instead of parrying.

Then she stepped forward and struck Ilse’s forearm before the second sword returned.

The judges signaled.

1–1

Mira immediately retreated.

Still no attempt to recover her weapon.

Kael smiled.

”She didn’t drop the sword to create an opening.”

Darius nodded. ”The original idea failed.”

Leon continued, ”So she stopped protecting the idea.”

Exactly.

Mira had once become attached to unusual choices simply because they were unusual. Now she had discarded not only the weapon but also the plan attached to it.

That was improvement.

Ilse changed.

She stopped giving Mira time to enjoy the one-sword adjustment.

Her next attacks came closer together. Not reckless combinations, but enough pressure to remind Mira that being interesting did not erase disadvantage.

Mira blocked high.

Ilse attacked low.

Mira escaped.

Ilse turned and cut toward the sword arm.

Mira barely avoided the point.

The crowd grew louder.

Mira continued moving away from the abandoned blade.

That puzzled Kael.

Victor noticed too. ”Why isn’t she getting it back?”

Darius did not answer.

Ilse began guiding Mira toward the opposite side of the arena.

The dropped sword remained behind her.

Farther away.

Mira seemed unconcerned.

At three minutes twenty, Ilse attacked twice and forced Mira toward the edge.

Mira slipped the first.

Caught the second.

Then Ilse changed pressure and drove the sword line outward.

Mira’s balance shifted.

Her heel crossed the boundary.

The official raised a marker.

Mira — 1 boundary violation

Still 1–1.

Mira returned to center.

Ilse looked toward the abandoned sword.

Then back at Mira.

”You forgot something.”

Mira smiled. ”I know where it is.”

Ilse’s expression changed slightly.

The referee restarted them.

Mira advanced.

Not toward Ilse.

Toward the sword.

Ilse moved to cut off the recovery.

Exactly what Mira wanted.

Mira stopped halfway.

Ilse had shifted position to guard the weapon, surrendering the cleaner central line she had maintained all match.

Mira attacked immediately.

One sword.

Direct thrust.

Ilse parried, but the angle was awkward because her feet had already turned toward the dropped weapon.

Mira followed with her shoulder.

Ilse recovered.

Mira hooked one foot behind Ilse’s lead leg without attempting a full trip.

Just enough disruption.

Ilse shifted.

Mira’s tournament blade touched her side.

Score.

Mira — 2

Now Mira retrieved the second sword.

Victor laughed.

”That was ridiculous.”

Darius shook his head. ”No.”

Victor looked toward him.

”The sword became useful after she stopped treating recovery as the objective.”

Mira returned to center with both blades.

Ilse looked at her differently now.

Not confused.

More careful.

That was what Mira wanted.

But careful opponents could become dangerous if she interpreted caution as control.

At four minutes, Mira started changing grips.

Not dramatically.

One sword reversed briefly during close exchanges, then returned.

Ilse adapted.

Mira switched which weapon led.

Ilse adapted.

Mira stepped outside her usual stance.

Ilse adjusted.

Nothing scored.

Mira became frustrated.

Kael could see it.

Not because Ilse was winning.

Because Ilse refused to become disorganized.

Every strange choice Mira introduced was absorbed, evaluated, and answered without panic.

Darius watched Mira’s shoulders.

”She’s about to overdo it.”

Kael looked over. ”How can you tell?”

”She’s creating decisions faster than Ilse is creating problems.”

That was exactly what happened.

Mira feinted right.

Changed left.

Released one sword halfway.

Caught it in the opposite hand.

Spun around Ilse’s lead side.

The crowd reacted before the exchange was finished.

It looked impressive.

Ilse simply stepped backward.

Mira’s entire sequence found nothing.

Then Ilse attacked the moment the rotation ended.

Clean strike to the shoulder.

2–2

Mira stopped.

Ilse did not smile.

She did not need to.

The point said enough.

Mira had spent four movements creating a problem Ilse solved with one step.

Darius folded his arms.

Kael already knew the review after the match would be unpleasant.

The next minute became Mira’s most important.

Because she stopped performing.

No unusual grip.

No dropped sword.

No aggressive footwork change.

She returned to fundamentals.

Ilse approached.

Mira blocked.

Ilse used the second blade.

Mira moved.

Simple.

Efficient.

The crowd grew quieter again.

Then Ilse made a small mistake.

Her right foot landed slightly narrower after a failed entry.

Mira saw it.

A month earlier, she might have attacked with some elaborate sequence designed to exploit the imbalance.

Instead she struck the front thigh.

One clean touch.

Score.

Mira — 3

Ilse stepped away.

Mira did not chase.

Darius nodded.

Kael looked toward him.

He said nothing.

Kael smiled anyway.

At six minutes, Ilse began targeting Mira’s decision-making rather than her weapons.

She gave Mira opportunities.

An exposed shoulder.

A wider step.

An apparent opening near the ribs.

Mira ignored the first.

Tested the second.

Refused the third.

Ilse watched.

Mira understood.

”They’re both baiting each other now,” Marcus said from behind Kael.

Kael glanced back. Marcus had returned from speaking with one of Duke Carthain’s officers and now stood with his arms folded near the aisle.

Darius nodded. ”Yes.”

Victor frowned. ”How do you win if every opening is suspicious?”

Marcus answered before Darius could. ”You stop asking whether the opening is real.”

Victor looked toward him.

Marcus continued. ”You ask what happens if you take it.”

That was better.

Victor became quiet.

In the arena, Ilse showed the shoulder again.

Mira attacked.

Not because she believed the opening.

Because she had already prepared for the answer.

Ilse’s left blade moved to trap Mira’s sword.

Mira released pressure before the trap closed and attacked with the second weapon.

Ilse barely blocked.

No score.

But the exchange changed Ilse’s confidence.

The next opening was less deliberate.

Mira did not take it.

That uncertainty now belonged to both of them.

Seven minutes.

Score 3–2 Mira.

One boundary against Mira.

No boundary against Ilse.

Ilse began increasing forward pressure.

She was not chasing the point.

She was forcing Mira to spend space.

Mira gave some.

Then stopped.

Both swords lifted.

Ilse entered.

Right blade high.

Left low.

Mira intercepted one.

Avoided the other.

Ilse stayed close.

Mira usually liked close exchanges because her two blades created unusual angles.

Ilse knew that.

Instead of fighting Mira’s weapons individually, she pressed her forearm into Mira’s upper arm and reduced the available space.

Mira’s left sword became almost useless.

Ilse’s right blade touched Mira’s ribs.

3–3

Mira pushed away.

Ilse followed only far enough to reclaim center.

Kael looked toward Darius. ”She’s controlling where Mira has room to be creative.”

Darius nodded. ”Good opponents do not merely answer strengths. They change the conditions under which those strengths function.”

Mira looked toward the boundary.

Then toward Ilse.

The match had changed again.

At eight minutes, Mira gave up one sword voluntarily.

Not dropped.

She tossed it toward the edge.

The crowd reacted.

Ilse did not.

She had learned.

Mira held the remaining sword with both hands.

Victor stared. ”Now what?”

Leon answered, ”Maybe nothing.”

Mira adopted a standard two-handed stance.

Ilse looked at her.

Then laughed.

Not mockingly.

Genuinely.

”You spent eight minutes making me worry about two swords.”

Mira smiled. ”Was it working?”

”Yes.”

”Then now you get one.”

Ilse shook her head.

The referee allowed the exchange to continue.

Mira advanced.

The difference was immediate.

Her strikes became heavier.

Not because the tournament sword changed.

Because both hands now controlled alignment and leverage.

Ilse had prepared for rapid angles.

Mira gave her pressure instead.

First strike.

Blocked.

Second.

Ilse gave ground.

Third.

Ilse separated her blades to catch the attack between them.

Mira withdrew before becoming trapped.

Ilse countered.

Mira parried with both hands and pushed the weapon aside.

Then she stepped forward.

No elaborate movement.

No feint.

Just a clean thrust toward the chest.

Ilse twisted.

The blade grazed her upper arm.

The judges raised Mira’s marker.

Mira — 4

The crowd roared.

Victor stood.

This time Kael did not pull him down.

Even Darius looked interested.

Mira had spent the first half of the match teaching Ilse to solve multiplicity.

Then she removed it.

Not because one sword was inherently better.

Because Ilse’s preparation had become part of the battlefield.

Ilse adapted quickly.

That was why she remained dangerous.

She stopped splitting attention between Mira’s hands and instead used both short swords to manipulate the longer two-handed weapon.

One caught.

The other attacked.

Mira had to move more.

At nine minutes, Ilse scored a clean touch to Mira’s shoulder.

4–4

Mira recovered.

No frustration.

No attempt to retrieve the second sword.

Ilse pushed toward the boundary.

Mira moved laterally.

Ilse followed.

Mira’s heel came close to the line.

She pivoted.

Ilse anticipated.

Blocked the escape.

Mira almost crossed.

Then she planted.

Two hands on the sword.

Instead of escaping away from Ilse, Mira drove forward into the space between both short blades.

Kael felt the echo of Ilse’s first point.

Same principle.

Different fighter.

Ilse tried to turn.

Mira’s shoulder caught her.

Neither scored.

But both escaped the boundary line.

They separated.

Mira smiled.

Ilse smiled back.

The match had stopped being a contest between chaos and discipline.

Both women were borrowing from the other.

Two minutes remained.

Score tied 4–4.

Mira had one boundary.

Ilse none.

Mira finally retrieved the second sword.

Not immediately.

She circled until the weapon lay behind her, then stepped backward and caught it with her foot, flipping it just high enough to grab by the handle.

Victor stared. ”She practiced that.”

Darius nodded. ”Too much.”

Mira now held two swords again.

Ilse adjusted.

But the adjustment was slower this time.

Not physically.

Mentally.

She had spent several minutes fighting one weapon.

Mira attacked before the old paired-blade pattern fully returned to Ilse’s expectations.

Right strike.

Blocked.

Left low.

Ilse turned.

Mira crossed both weapons briefly.

Ilse moved backward.

Mira separated them.

No score.

Ilse countered.

Mira blocked.

One minute twenty.

The crowd stood.

Kael stayed seated until Victor pulled him upright.

”Everyone else is standing.”

”That is not a reason.”

”You were going to stand.”

Kael stood.

One minute.

Mira attacked.

Ilse defended.

No score.

Fifty seconds.

Ilse pressed.

Mira gave ground.

Forty.

Ilse attacked high.

Mira caught it.

Second blade toward the hip.

Mira jumped sideways.

Thirty-five.

Mira was closer to the boundary.

One violation already.

Ilse knew it.

Mira knew she knew it.

Ilse advanced.

Mira retreated one step.

Then another.

Victor groaned. ”Not again.”

Darius remained still.

Twenty-five seconds.

Mira’s rear foot approached the line.

Ilse stepped closer.

The obvious move was to escape laterally.

Mira had done that before.

Ilse shifted slightly to block it.

Mira saw the shift.

Then deliberately stepped over the boundary.

The official raised the marker.

Mira — 2 boundary violations

The crowd shouted in confusion.

Kael stared.

Victor looked horrified. ”Why would she do that?”

Darius’s expression changed.

The referee reset them at center.

Seventeen seconds remained.

Mira now had two boundary violations.

One more meant automatic elimination.

But she had achieved something else.

Center.

Ilse no longer had her trapped against the line.

Mira had traded one future risk for immediate position.

Was it worth it?

Kael did not know.

That was why the decision mattered.

The referee restarted them.

Fifteen seconds.

Ilse attacked immediately.

She knew decision scoring could consider Mira’s two boundaries if the match remained tied.

Mira blocked.

Ten.

Ilse pressed again.

Mira retreated only half a step.

Seven.

Mira attacked.

Both swords moved.

Ilse prepared for the split.

Mira did not split.

Both blades struck the same line.

One high.

One directly behind it.

Ilse caught the first.

Her second weapon moved toward the expected opposite attack.

There was none.

Mira’s second blade followed the first through the space Ilse had just opened.

Clean touch to the chest.

The bell sounded.

For a heartbeat, the arena fell into confusion.

Then the nearest judge raised Mira’s marker.

The second followed.

The third confirmed.

Mira — 5

Ilse — 4

Mira Solenne advanced to the quarterfinals.

Mira stood still for several seconds after the bell.

Then she lowered both swords.

Ilse looked at her chest where the tournament blade had touched.

”You used the same line twice.”

Mira nodded. ”You spent the whole match expecting the second blade somewhere else.”

Ilse smiled. ”That was irritating.”

”Thank you.”

They clasped forearms.

Ilse then looked toward the boundary marker. ”You planned the second violation?”

Mira hesitated.

Kael immediately became suspicious.

Ilse noticed too.

Mira smiled. ”Mostly.”

Darius closed his eyes from across the arena.

Kael laughed.

Ilse shook her head. ”At least you’re honest.”

They saluted before leaving.

The Blackwood corridor became loud the moment Mira entered.

Victor reached her first. ”You intentionally stepped out.”

”Yes.”

”That was insane.”

”It worked.”

Darius arrived behind him. ”Those statements are not mutually exclusive.”

Mira’s smile weakened.

Kael leaned against the wall.

Here it came.

Darius looked toward her. ”Why did you take the violation?”

”Ilse had me near the line. I already had one warning. If I tried escaping laterally, she was prepared to follow. If I fought there, she could pressure me into a third violation anyway. The reset gave me center with enough time for one final exchange.”

Darius nodded. ”Reasonable.”

Mira brightened.

”Still dangerous.”

There it was.

Darius continued. ”You traded a bad position for an elimination condition. If the final exchange had lasted three seconds longer, the judges could have ruled the match with two boundary violations against you as part of their decision.”

Mira nodded.

”I knew that.”

”Good. Then the decision was calculated, not accidental.”

Kael smiled.

Darius looked toward him.

Kael immediately stopped.

Then Darius added, ”Your fourth-minute sequence was worse.”

Mira frowned. ”The spin?”

”The entire performance around it.”

Victor laughed.

Mira looked at him. ”You lost your credential in your boot.”

Victor stopped.

Darius continued. ”You created four actions where one would have served. Ilse punished you because your movement became about being difficult to read rather than creating a useful outcome.”

Mira nodded slowly.

”And the one-sword section?”

”Better.”

She smiled.

Darius continued before she could enjoy it too much. ”Not because one sword is superior. Because you recognized that Ilse had built her defense around your two-weapon rhythm and changed the problem.”

Mira looked toward the arena entrance.

”I almost kept one sword for the rest of the match.”

”Why didn’t you?”

”Because she adapted.”

Darius nodded. ”Exactly.”

No style deserved loyalty after it stopped serving the situation.

That was the real lesson.

Marchioness Sabine Greymark approached after Mira had changed out of her tournament gloves.

Tavric Dorn accompanied her.

Victor immediately became more attentive.

Sabine noticed and smiled faintly. ”Sir Victor. You may relax. I am not here for you.”

Victor looked offended by the possibility that he had appeared nervous. ”I was relaxed.”

Tavric gave him a look that suggested otherwise.

Sabine turned toward Mira. ”Dame Ilse recommended that I speak with you.”

Mira glanced toward Ilse, who stood farther down the corridor drinking water.

”She lost.”

”Yes.”

”And recommended me anyway?”

Sabine nodded. ”Greymark does not become stronger by pretending anyone who defeats one of ours must be ignored.”

Kael appreciated that answer.

Mira asked, ”What do you want?”

Sabine smiled slightly. ”Direct. Good.”

Darius looked almost pained by how often that word had been stolen.

Sabine continued. ”Nothing tonight. There is a gathering after the quarterfinal round involving several western military households, road commanders, and tournament fighters. I would like you to attend.”

”Recruitment?”

”Conversation.”

Mira tilted her head.

Sabine elaborated. ”Greymark works extensively in broken terrain, river-country patrols, and border roads where rigid formation methods often fail. Your fighting style is not directly equivalent to military command, but the way you change problems interests some of my officers.”

Mira looked toward Kael.

He immediately shook his head. ”Your choice.”

Sabine noticed that.

”So I have heard.”

Mira considered the invitation. ”Then yes. I’ll attend.”

Sabine nodded and left with Tavric.

Victor watched them go.

Then looked toward Mira. ”Now Greymark wants both of us.”

Mira smiled. ”Maybe they collect difficult people.”

Tavric, still close enough to hear, called back, ”We already have enough.”

Victor stared.

Kael laughed.

By late afternoon, the tournament board looked very different.

Damien Ravenmoor had reached the Spear final.

Victor Ravenshade had reached the Swordsman quarterfinals.

Mira Solenne had now joined him there.

Roderic Seln remained alive after eliminating Leon.

Edric Vale remained alive under House Varrow.

The number of Blackwood fighters still competing had fallen, but the ones remaining had pushed deeper than Kael would have predicted when the tournament began.

That brought a new problem.

Attention.

Not the imaginary sort Kael once assumed came whenever someone looked impressive.

Actual invitations had accumulated.

Morcant wanted Damien for a six-month frontier staff evaluation.

Greymark wanted conversations with Victor and Mira.

Carthain had invited Marcus and Leon into technical discussions despite both being eliminated.

Elena’s household remained interested in Elias.

House Varrow had already taken Edric Vale under its direct banner.

Blackwood had entered the tournament hoping to test its people.

The Empire was testing Blackwood in return.

Kael stood near the bracket board with Darius.

”They could leave.”

”Yes.”

Kael looked toward him.

”You always say that too easily.”

”No. I simply say it accurately.”

Kael folded his arms. ”Damien might take Morcant’s offer. Elias could decide Elena’s household fits him better. Marcus could find something with Carthain. Leon already has history with Cassian’s military household.”

”And?”

Kael looked toward the names.

”And I don’t like it.”

Darius nodded.

That surprised him.

”You’re not going to lecture me?”

”You are allowed to dislike losing capable people.”

Kael glanced over.

Darius continued. ”The mistake would be converting that discomfort into entitlement.”

There it was.

Kael sighed.

Darius almost smiled. ”Blackwood should become a place worth choosing. That is different from becoming a place people are forbidden to leave.”

Kael looked back toward the board.

He understood that intellectually.

Emotion was slower.

A tournament clerk approached before he could think about it much longer.

”Prince Kael?”

Kael turned.

The clerk carried an updated Swordsman bracket.

”Quarterfinal pairings have been confirmed.”

Victor and Mira both moved closer.

Darius held out his hand.

The clerk gave him the page.

Kael watched his expression.

Nothing.

That was unhelpful.

Victor leaned over his shoulder.

Then stopped.

Mira did the same.

Kael took the sheet.

The first pairing:

Sir Roderic Seln — House Carthain

Sir Edric Vale — House Varrow

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Edric against the man who eliminated Leon.

The second pairing:

Sir Victor Ravenshade — Blackwood

Sir Calden Rusk — House Avenor

A new opponent.

Victor smiled.

Then Kael read the third.

Mira Solenne — Blackwood

Sir Joren Pellaris — Independent

Mira’s expression changed.

”The instructor.”

Yes.

Sir Joren Pellaris—the same swordsman who had offered Mira three mornings of free training after criticizing her left-side footwork.

No House oath.

No recruitment condition.

He had apparently been competing in the other side of the bracket all along.

Mira looked toward Darius.

”He trained with me yesterday morning.”

Darius nodded.

”And now I fight him.”

”Yes.”

Mira looked back at the name.

”He knows exactly what he corrected.”

Kael understood the problem.

Joren knew more about Mira’s current habits than almost anyone outside Blackwood.

More importantly, Mira knew that he knew.

That could become dangerous before either of them entered the arena.

Darius folded the bracket sheet.

”Tomorrow.”

Mira looked toward him. ”You’re smiling.”

”I am not.”

Victor leaned toward Kael. ”He is.”

Kael nodded.

Darius looked at both of them.

Neither backed down.

For the first time, Darius actually smiled.

Only slightly.

”That,” he said, looking toward Mira, ”should be educational.”

Mira stared at him.

”Now I know why everyone hates when you say things like that.”

Kael laughed.

Tomorrow, the quarterfinals would begin.

Edric Vale would face Roderic Seln.

Victor would meet an opponent Blackwood had barely studied.

And Mira would fight a man who had already helped teach her how to become better.

The tournament had spent days forcing Blackwood’s fighters to confront strangers.

Now it was beginning to make them confront people who understood them.
