The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Victor Ravenshade spent most of the evening pretending he was not thinking about Sir Tavric Dorn.

Nobody believed him.

He ate normally, complained normally, made three jokes during dinner, and spent ten minutes arguing with Hugo Stone about whether a thicker shoulder plate would improve his chances tomorrow. The problem was that Victor only argued about equipment when something else bothered him.

Marcus Wintermere noticed first.

You’re staring at the bracket again.

Victor looked away from the wall where Tavric’s name had been posted. I was looking past it.

At what?

The wall.

Marcus nodded slowly. Fascinating wall.

Victor pointed his fork at him. You became unbearable after winning one fight.

Across the table, Elias Thorn sat with his injured ankle stretched beneath the bench. He had been unusually quiet during dinner, though Kael suspected that had more to do with watching Victor unravel than exhaustion. Finally Elias looked toward the bracket and said, Tavric wins the beginning of fights because people decide that means something before it actually does.

Victor frowned. It does mean something. If he attacks first, I’m defending first.

Only if his attack forces you to defend.

Victor stared at him. That sounds like something Darius would say.

Elias took another bite. I have had a difficult week.

Kael laughed.

The House Kael dining room inside their temporary Aurelia residence had become louder over the past several days. At first, everyone had eaten like visitors inside someone else’s palace. Now armor rested against chairs, tournament schedules covered one end of the table, healer instructions were ignored in increasingly creative ways, and Lily had started threatening anyone who left dishes on the floor.

It felt less formal.

More Blackwood.

Kael liked that.

Damien Ravenmoor arrived late, still carrying the fatigue of his quarterfinal qualification from the previous day. He dropped into an empty chair beside Leon and looked toward Victor. How bad is it?

Victor frowned. How bad is what?

Marcus answered for him. Tavric attacks first.

Damien waited.

Victor spread both hands. That’s the problem.

Damien looked toward Marcus, then Elias, then Kael. Is there another problem?

Thank you, Victor said. Finally, someone understands.

Damien reached for bread. No. I was asking because that one sounded too stupid to be the whole thing.

The table erupted.

Victor leaned back. I hate this House.

Kael smiled. You’re not sworn to it yet.

Victor pointed again. Keep talking like that and I never will be.

Darius entered during the laughter.

That ended most of it.

Not because he demanded silence.

Because every Black Dragon had developed the instinct that unnecessary noise became training if Darius heard enough of it.

He looked toward Victor. Training yard. Ten minutes.

Victor’s face fell. Tonight?

You have a match tomorrow.

That is why I thought sleeping might be useful.

It is.

Victor waited.

Darius continued, After training.

Marcus looked down at his food to hide a smile.

Victor stood with the expression of a condemned man. If I die tomorrow, this is your fault.

Darius turned toward the door. If you die tomorrow, you ignored tournament rules.

That was somehow worse.

Kael rose too.

Victor looked over. Why are you coming?

Entertainment.

Traitor.

The Third Palace Yard was nearly empty by the time they arrived.

A few household knights finished evening drills along the far wall while attendants collected practice shields and blunt weapons from the racks. Lanterns hung from the covered walkway, leaving the central training sand bright enough for sparring but dim enough that the stone arches beyond disappeared into shadow.

Tavric Dorn was not there.

That disappointed Victor.

Kael knew because Victor looked around twice before asking, He’s not training here?

Darius took a practice sword from the rack. Why would he be?

I thought maybe you arranged something like Marcus and Otho.

No.

Good.

Victor paused. Actually, I don’t know if that’s good.

Darius tossed him the wooden blade. Victor caught it, then looked around again as Marcus, Leon, Damien, Elias, and Mira entered behind Kael.

Victor stared at them. Why is everyone here?

Mira leaned against a column. You’re entertaining.

Leon added, And if you lose tomorrow, I want to know whether tonight was the reason.

Very supportive.

Elias took a bench rather than standing. Healer’s orders.

Victor looked toward Kael. You invited them.

I did nothing.

That’s worse. They came willingly.

Darius walked to the middle of the yard. Enough.

Victor stepped onto the sand.

Darius did not take a weapon.

That made Victor suspicious.

Who am I fighting?

Nobody.

Victor frowned. Then what are we doing?

Darius pointed toward the opposite side of the yard. Attack me.

Victor stared. You don’t have a sword.

Yes.

And you’re one of the Four Imperial Shields.

Also yes.

Victor looked toward Kael. This feels like a trap.

Kael smiled. It is Darius.

Fair.

Victor raised the practice sword and moved.

Fast.

Not tournament speed.

Still fast enough that an ordinary swordsman would have needed to react immediately.

Darius did not.

Victor closed distance.

Only when the wooden blade began its final line toward his shoulder did Darius step aside.

One movement.

Victor’s sword passed empty air.

Darius tapped two fingers against Victor’s ribs.

Dead.

Victor turned. That doesn’t count.

Why?

You didn’t have a weapon.

Darius looked at him. Did that stop you from missing?

Victor opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Marcus smiled. One.

Victor glared.

Darius returned to his original position. Again.

Victor attacked a second time.

This time he feinted.

Darius stayed.

Victor changed angle.

Still nothing.

Victor committed to the real strike.

Darius moved.

Miss.

Two fingers tapped Victor’s throat guard.

Dead.

Victor stepped away, annoyed. You’re waiting until the last second.

Yes.

Because you know I have to eventually commit.

Yes.

Victor’s frustration eased slightly.

He was learning.

Darius pointed toward him. Your problem is not that Tavric attacks first.

Victor nodded slowly. My problem is that I care.

Partly.

Darius continued. Your greater problem is that you assume first movement equals initiative.

Kael leaned forward.

That distinction mattered.

Victor lowered the practice sword. Doesn’t it?

No.

Darius pointed toward where Victor had just attacked from. You moved first both times. Who controlled the exchange?

You.

Exactly.

Mira smiled faintly. That’s cruel.

Darius glanced toward her. Correct.

Victor looked down at the wooden sword.

Then he looked back up. So Tavric could attack first and still be reacting to me.

Yes.

If I give him something he thinks is an opening.

Yes.

Or if I choose where his first attack has to go.

Darius nodded once. Now you are thinking about the exchange instead of the insult.

Victor frowned. I wasn’t insulted.

Every person in the yard stared at him.

Victor sighed. Fine. A little.

Darius changed the drill.

Leon entered the yard with a wooden longsword.

Victor looked toward him. Why him?

Because I said so.

Leon smiled. Good answer.

Kael groaned softly.

Nobody asked.

Darius positioned them several paces apart.

Leon, you attack first every exchange.

Leon nodded.

Victor looked toward Darius. Every exchange?

Yes.

Then this is just Tavric practice.

No.

Darius’s expression remained calm. Leon is not Tavric. If you turn him into Tavric in your head, you’ve already failed tonight’s lesson.

Victor breathed out slowly. Fight the person now.

Yes.

Leon raised his sword.

Victor settled into guard.

Darius stepped back. Begin.

Leon attacked immediately.

Not fast.

Direct thrust.

Victor parried.

His instinct was to counter instantly.

Kael saw the shoulder twitch.

Victor stopped himself.

Leon withdrew.

Second exchange.

Leon moved first again.

High cut.

Victor blocked.

Leon stepped away before the counter.

Victor almost chased.

Stopped.

Third.

Leon feinted.

Victor did not bite.

Leon came low.

Victor moved aside instead of parrying.

The sword passed.

Victor stepped into center.

No attack.

Leon had to turn.

Victor smiled.

There.

Darius said nothing.

That was probably approval.

Leon attacked again.

Victor gave him an opening near the right shoulder.

Too obvious.

Leon ignored it.

Victor frowned.

Leon smiled. You think I’m stupid?

Sometimes.

Leon attacked left.

Victor blocked.

Their swords separated.

Victor’s expression changed.

The opening had failed, but that told him Leon had seen it.

Information.

Fifth exchange.

Victor offered the same right side again.

Leon ignored it again.

Then Victor stepped forward before Leon attacked.

Not swinging.

Just taking range.

Leon adjusted.

Now his first attack had fewer options.

He cut high.

Victor had expected.

Parry.

Immediate counter.

Wooden blade stopped against Leon’s chest.

Victor grinned.

One.

Leon nodded. Good.

Darius spoke. Why did that work?

Victor answered faster than usual. I chose the distance before Leon chose the attack.

Better.

And because he’d ignored the right opening twice, I knew he was watching for it.

Darius nodded. You shaped the first strike.

Victor looked pleased.

Then Darius added, Which means you will now become overconfident and try to repeat it tomorrow.

Victor’s expression collapsed.

Why can’t I have anything?

Because Tavric will have watched you too.

That took some of the humor out of the yard.

Victor looked toward the distant wall.

He had grown accustomed to studying opponents.

The tournament had taught all of them the uncomfortable reverse.

Other people studied back.

Training continued for nearly an hour.

Darius rotated Leon out and Marcus in.

Marcus’s orders were different.

Attack first.

Attack hard.

Change tempo.

Sometimes use Aura.

Sometimes do not.

Victor had to stop treating the beginning of the exchange as a race.

At first, he failed.

Marcus lunged and Victor immediately accelerated to beat the second strike.

Marcus anticipated, turned the blade, and caught Victor in the ribs.

Again.

Victor tried taking initiative back too quickly.

Marcus let him.

Then punished the overextension.

Darius stopped them.

Ravenshade.

Victor lowered his sword. Yes, Sir.

What are you trying to win?

Victor frowned. The exchange.

No.

He thought.

Darius waited.

Victor looked toward Marcus. I’m trying to win the moment after he starts.

Exactly.

Why?

Victor had no good answer.

Because I don’t like being behind.

Darius nodded. Better.

Then he stepped closer. Tomorrow Tavric will attack first often because he knows fighters like you experience defense as losing.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Darius continued before he could answer. Defense is not losing. Retreat is not losing. A parry is not losing. Giving up one step is not losing. You lose when the choice creates no useful answer afterward.

Victor looked down at the sword.

Kael remembered his own lessons from watching the tournament.

Every fighter had carried a belief into the arena.

Elias believed more observation created more certainty.

Marcus believed more force solved more problems.

Leon trusted correct, disciplined choices so much that correct choices could become predictable.

Mira loved unpredictability enough that uncertainty sometimes became its own goal.

Victor hated surrendering momentum.

Not because aggression was bad.

Because he had begun attaching identity to it.

Darius pointed toward Marcus. Again.

Marcus attacked.

Victor blocked.

No counter.

Marcus stepped forward.

Victor gave ground.

Marcus attacked again.

Victor moved.

No attempt to steal momentum back.

Third strike.

Victor parried.

Marcus expected retreat.

Victor stepped forward instead.

Shoulder inside.

Wooden sword came low.

Stopped against Marcus’s ribs.

Marcus smiled.

Better.

Darius nodded once.

Victor grinned.

There it is.

Do it again.

The grin disappeared.

Later that night, Kael found Victor on the residence balcony.

The capital spread below them beneath thousands of lamps. Aurelia was never truly dark. Main avenues remained busy, carriage lanterns moved between noble estates, and distant towers glowed with enchanted lights from government districts that apparently considered sleep optional.

Victor leaned against the railing.

Kael stopped beside him.

You did better tonight.

Victor glanced over. Is this where you say good?

No.

Victor looked almost disappointed.

Kael smiled.

Good.

There it is.

They stood quietly for a moment.

Victor eventually asked, Do you think I’m reckless?

Kael considered the answer.

Sometimes.

Victor nodded.

That was more honest than immediate reassurance.

Do you think Darius does?

Definitely.

Victor laughed.

Then why did he select me?

Kael looked toward him.

You know why.

I know why he said.

Different?

Victor shrugged.

Darius said I adapt after mistakes.

That’s true.

Lots of people adapt.

Not fast enough.

Victor looked down toward the street.

Kael continued. Your first instinct is often dangerous. Your second is usually better.

That’s a terrible compliment.

It’s still a compliment.

Victor smiled faintly.

Then he became serious again. People always told me to calm down before Blackwood.

Maybe they were right.

No. They meant stop being me.

Kael understood the difference.

Victor continued. Darius says almost the same thing, but somehow he means something else.

Because he isn’t asking you to stop attacking.

Victor nodded.

He’s asking me to know why.

Exactly.

Victor looked toward Kael. You realize you’re repeating him now.

I spend too much time around him.

Dangerous.

Very.

Kael turned toward the balcony door.

Get some sleep.

Victor remained at the railing.

Kael.

He stopped.

Victor’s voice had changed.

If I lose tomorrow—

Kael waited.

Victor continued. Don’t give me one of those speeches about how losing teaches you more than winning.

Kael smiled. I wasn’t planning to.

Good.

If you lose, I’ll probably tell you exactly where you looked stupid.

Victor laughed. Better.

Then Kael added, After Darius does.

Victor’s laughter disappeared.

That’s cruel.

Kael went inside.

Morning arrived clear and cold enough that the Coliseum sand looked almost pale beneath the sunlight.

Victor was already dressed when Kael entered the preparation chamber.

His bandages had been reduced.

The bruising from his earlier match remained visible around one shoulder, but the healers had cleared him. Hugo Stone inspected his sword twice before declaring the balance unchanged.

Victor sat while Hugo worked.

That alone impressed Kael.

Usually Victor paced.

Marcus stood near the wall.

Leon had arrived after early shield practice with Cassel Roen, though he refused to describe the session beyond saying Cassel enjoyed hitting him.

Elias remained seated with his ankle.

Damien studied the spear bracket at the opposite end.

Mira sat on a table she had been told not to sit on.

Darius entered last.

Victor looked up.

Any final wisdom?

Yes.

Everyone became quiet.

Darius stepped in front of him.

Tavric is not faster than you.

Victor nodded.

He may look faster.

Why?

Because he begins earlier.

Victor understood.

Darius continued. Do not race him to something he has already chosen. Make his early movement become a commitment.

Victor stood.

And if he doesn’t commit?

Then his first strike means nothing.

Victor’s mouth moved slightly.

He liked that.

Darius looked toward the sword.

One more thing. Tavric’s left defense is strong because people attack it incorrectly.

Victor frowned. The record says that’s his strongest side.

It is.

Then why attack it at all?

Darius did not answer.

Of course.

Victor sighed.

I’ll figure it out.

Yes.

Hugo handed over the sword.

Victor rolled the grip once in his hand.

Then looked toward everyone.

Nobody die while I’m gone.

Marcus folded his arms. You’re the one fighting.

Details.

He walked toward the gate.

The Round of Thirty-Two had changed the Coliseum’s atmosphere.

There were fewer unknown names now.

Fewer casual spectators leaving midway through matches.

House representatives sat closer.

Scouts had started carrying thicker notebooks.

Kael noticed several military officers from outside Aurelia among the lower rows.

The Imperial balcony was occupied again.

Cassian sat near the center.

Elena and Elara spoke quietly a few seats away.

Marcus Asterion had returned.

Seraphine arrived shortly before the match and sat with several nobles connected to her household.

Augustus remained absent.

Kael had stopped expecting the Emperor at anything before the later rounds.

Grand Herald Ken walked to the announcement platform.

Swordsman and Knight Division. Round of Thirty-Two.

House Greymark’s section became attentive.

Sir Tavric Dorn of House Greymark.

Tavric entered first.

He was twenty-nine.

Lean.

Not physically imposing.

Dark hair cut short.

No shield.

Longsword with a slightly narrow blade built for speed and direction changes rather than heavy impact.

His armor carried Marchioness Sabine Greymark’s stag-and-river emblem at the shoulder.

Kael studied his stance as Tavric approached center.

Left side slightly back.

Sword already forward.

Not waiting for the bell to become ready.

Victor’s gate opened.

Sir Victor Ravenshade of House Kael. Black Dragon.

Blackwood rose.

Victor entered without looking toward them.

Good.

He wore the black armband beneath his newly recognized Imperial knight insignia. His sword remained sheathed until he reached the center, where he drew and settled into guard.

Tavric smiled.

Victor smiled back.

Kael immediately disliked that.

Two men who enjoyed starting fights.

This could become ridiculous.

The judge reviewed conditions.

Twelve-minute limit.

Three boundary exits.

Submission.

Decisive control.

Incapacitation.

Decision if time expired.

Both acknowledged.

They separated.

Tavric leaned slightly forward.

Victor looked relaxed.

The bell rang.

Tavric attacked.

Of course.

One straight thrust.

Fast.

Victor parried.

Tavric was already moving into the second strike before the blades separated.

Victor stepped back.

Third cut.

Victor blocked.

Tavric reset.

Victor did not counter.

A murmur moved through the crowd.

People who knew Victor expected immediate violence.

Tavric noticed too.

He smiled faintly.

Victor said, Keep waiting.

Tavric answered, I wasn’t.

Second exchange.

Tavric attacked first again.

Low cut.

Victor moved.

High thrust.

Parried.

Tavric stepped left.

Third strike toward Victor’s sword arm.

Victor blocked.

No counter.

Tavric reset.

Kael leaned forward.

He’s testing whether Victor can tolerate it.

Elias nodded. More than the defense itself.

Third exchange.

Tavric moved.

Victor moved at the same time.

Not attacking.

Forward.

The distance collapsed faster than Tavric expected.

His opening thrust had been prepared for longer range.

He shortened it.

Victor parried close.

Tavric tried second attack.

Victor’s shoulder crowded the sword arm.

The strike never formed correctly.

Victor cut low.

Tavric jumped back.

No contact.

But he had been forced out.

Victor smiled.

Tavric’s smile became smaller.

One minute.

No score.

Marcus leaned forward. There.

Victor had not attacked first.

He had controlled where Tavric’s first attack happened.

Darius remained silent below.

Kael could already imagine the post-fight question.

Why did you win?

Assuming Victor won.

Too early.

Very too early.

Tavric adjusted immediately.

Fourth exchange.

He began farther away.

Attack first.

But this time the opening thrust was shorter.

Not meant to reach.

Victor recognized the bait and did not step in.

Tavric’s second movement became real.

Fast cut from right.

Victor parried.

Third came low.

Victor moved.

Then Tavric did something unexpected.

Fourth attack.

The public reports had emphasized fast opening tempo, but not fixed three-part combinations.

Victor barely blocked.

Tavric’s blade slid over his guard and touched the upper shoulder plate.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

House Greymark cheered.

Tavric stepped away.

Victor looked toward the mark.

Then smiled.

You were waiting for me to count.

Tavric shrugged. Everyone counts eventually.

Elias winced slightly.

Personal attack.

Victor glanced toward the Blackwood section.

Elias raised one hand.

Victor laughed.

Good.

The mistake had not angered him.

Better.

Tavric led one-zero.

Next exchange, Tavric attacked first again.

Victor did not care.

He parried.

Second.

Moved.

Third.

Stayed.

Fourth?

Nothing.

Tavric stopped after two.

Victor did not overreact.

Tavric circled.

Victor followed.

No rush.

Then Victor attacked.

Fast.

The crowd reacted.

Tavric’s left defense came up instantly.

Clean parry.

Victor struck again at the same side.

Blocked.

Third.

Same.

Victor was attacking Tavric’s strongest defense deliberately.

Kael frowned.

Darius had said people attacked it incorrectly.

Was Victor discovering why?

Tavric’s left-side guard barely moved.

Compact.

Efficient.

Victor struck a fourth time.

Blocked.

Tavric smiled.

You read the reports?

Victor answered, Unfortunately.

Then why are you hitting the good side?

Victor attacked again.

Tavric blocked.

Because you like it too much.

That changed Tavric’s expression.

Victor stepped away.

No score.

But now Kael understood.

A strong defense could still become predictable if someone trusted it completely.

Victor was not trying to break through yet.

He was studying what Tavric did when attacked there.

Two minutes.

Tavric led one-zero.

Tavric resumed first action.

Thrust.

Victor parried.

Low cut.

Victor moved.

Tavric stepped away.

Victor did not chase.

Again.

Tavric opened.

Victor blocked.

Reset.

Again.

First.

Second.

Reset.

Victor started seeing something.

Kael saw it in his eyes.

Tavric’s first attack was not always an attempt to score.

Sometimes it created the position for the next exchange.

He was using openings like punctuation.

Victor waited.

Tavric attacked high.

Victor stepped slightly right.

Tavric’s sword changed.

Low.

Victor blocked.

Then Tavric retreated left.

Toward his strong defense.

There.

Victor followed one step.

Not attacking.

Tavric’s guard shifted automatically to protect the side.

Victor stopped.

Tavric realized.

Too late.

Victor changed direction and attacked the opposite shoulder.

Tavric parried, but late.

Victor continued.

Second cut low.

Tavric blocked.

Third thrust.

Blade touched chest armor.

Scoring bell.

One-one.

Blackwood erupted.

Victor withdrew immediately.

No celebration.

Tavric looked toward his own guard.

Victor smiled.

You retreat into the side you trust.

Tavric nodded slowly.

Sometimes.

That answer mattered.

Not denial.

Not surprise.

He knew his own habit.

Which meant Victor had not discovered a secret Tavric had never considered.

He had discovered something Tavric managed deliberately.

Dangerous.

Darius’s voice carried from below.

Ravenshade.

Victor glanced only slightly.

Enough.

Do not turn one observation into certainty.

Elias smiled.

That one was definitely for me too.

Kael nodded.

Probably all of us by now.

Three minutes.

Tie.

Tavric changed his retreat.

No longer left.

He began moving straight back after exchanges.

Victor noticed.

Did not chase the old pattern.

Good.

Tavric attacked first.

Victor blocked.

Second.

Victor stepped inside.

Tavric disengaged and pivoted right.

Different.

Victor followed too quickly.

Tavric’s first retreat had become bait.

He turned.

Thrust.

Victor barely parried.

Tavric’s follow-up caught Victor’s side armor.

Scoring bell.

Two-one Tavric.

Victor’s expression tightened.

Not anger.

Annoyance.

Tavric stepped away.

You liked the answer.

Victor laughed once. I did.

Then I changed the question.

Kael looked toward Mira.

She smiled. I like him.

Victor probably would too after the match.

If they did not kill each other first.

Tavric began accelerating.

Not because Victor was losing control.

Because he wanted him to.

First attack.

Victor blocked.

Second immediate.

Block.

Third.

Victor moved.

Tavric reset quickly and attacked again before Victor had fully returned to neutral.

The exchanges started blending together.

That was new.

No clean pause.

Victor’s greatest instinct was exactly what Tavric wanted now.

Fight back.

Steal tempo.

Attack faster.

Victor resisted for three exchanges.

Then cracked.

Tavric thrust.

Victor parried hard and immediately countered.

Fast.

Too fast.

Tavric had expected.

His left guard caught Victor’s blade.

The parry redirected past center.

Tavric stepped inside.

Sword pommel struck Victor’s shoulder.

Not score.

Then blade cut across upper back.

Scoring bell.

Three-one.

House Greymark roared.

Victor spun.

Tavric was already away.

Kael cursed softly.

Marcus nodded. There it is.

Victor had tried to take the first moment back.

Tavric had built the entire exchange around that desire.

Darius said nothing.

Victor knew.

He took one breath.

Then another.

His sword lowered slightly.

Tavric advanced.

Victor did not.

Four minutes.

Three-one Tavric.

The next minute looked worse for Victor and was probably better.

Tavric attacked first six times.

Victor did not score once.

But Tavric did not either.

Victor defended.

Moved.

Reset.

Sometimes retreated.

Sometimes gave center.

The crowd grew restless.

Victor did not.

That was growth.

Kael could tell how difficult it was because Victor’s shoulders twitched after every successful parry.

His body wanted to counter.

He refused unless the position justified it.

Tavric noticed.

He started making his openings more aggressive.

Victor still waited.

Then Tavric finally overextended.

Tiny.

First thrust deeper than usual.

Victor parried.

Tavric expected no counter.

Victor attacked.

One clean cut toward the sword arm.

Tavric pulled away.

Victor continued to the left side.

Tavric’s strong defense caught it.

Exactly.

Victor had wanted the block.

He let his blade slide along Tavric’s guard rather than rebounding.

Stepped closer.

Tavric’s left defense became crowded.

Victor released pressure and switched angle.

Pommel toward chest.

Tavric leaned back.

Victor’s real strike came low from the right.

Blade touched thigh armor.

Scoring bell.

Three-two.

Blackwood roared.

Victor stepped away.

Tavric looked toward him.

You waited.

Victor grinned. Hated every second.

The crowd laughed.

Kael did too.

Darius almost smiled.

Almost.

Five minutes.

Three-two Tavric.

Victor had found something important.

Tavric’s first movement could create initiative.

But when Victor refused to contest it automatically, Tavric had to spend more to turn that opening into actual control.

Tavric knew too.

He changed.

Instead of attacking first immediately after reset, he waited.

The entire arena seemed confused.

Victor included.

Victor smiled.

Oh, now you don’t want to go first?

Tavric held guard. Do you?

Victor thought.

That was the trap.

If he rushed simply because Tavric stopped, Tavric still controlled him.

Victor took one step.

Not an attack.

Tavric adjusted.

Victor stepped left.

Tavric turned.

Another.

Tavric moved.

Victor was now asking the questions.

He feinted high.

Tavric’s left guard shifted.

Victor did not attack.

Second feint low.

No response.

Victor smiled.

Tavric smiled back.

Then Victor rushed.

Not with a strike.

With distance.

Exactly as he had trained.

Tavric’s sword came forward instinctively.

The first attack finally happened.

Victor had forced it.

Parry.

Step outside.

Counter to shoulder.

Tavric blocked with the left side.

Victor expected.

Second strike opposite.

Tavric moved.

Third thrust.

Contact chest.

Scoring bell.

Three-three.

The Coliseum erupted.

Victor backed away.

Tavric looked less amused now.

Good.

Not angry.

Working.

Tie.

At six minutes Tavric introduced Aura.

Moderate.

Sharp.

Mostly legs and sword arm.

The change made his opening attacks much faster.

The first nearly scored.

Victor barely blocked.

Second exchange Tavric struck again before Victor stabilized.

Victor used Aura too.

The blades cracked hard enough to echo.

Tavric disengaged.

Victor’s reinforcement remained for half a second too long.

Waste.

Tavric attacked low.

Victor moved.

No score.

Third exchange.

Tavric used no Aura.

Victor expected it and reinforced anyway.

Tavric smiled.

Marcus groaned.

Same thing.

Otho’s lesson.

Kael nodded.

Everybody had different styles.

The principles repeated.

Make the opponent spend something uselessly.

Tavric attacked again.

Victor waited.

No Aura.

Parry.

Tavric surged on second strike.

Victor reinforced late.

Correct.

Impact.

Neither broke.

Victor stepped forward.

Tavric’s left guard rose.

Victor did not attack it.

He kicked at the front ankle.

Tavric moved.

Victor’s sword came toward the newly exposed right side.

Tavric twisted.

Blade scraped ribs.

Scoring bell.

Four-three Victor.

Blackwood exploded.

First lead.

Victor’s expression changed.

Dangerous.

Pride.

Kael saw it immediately.

So did Tavric.

The next exchange began before Victor fully settled.

Tavric attacked first.

Victor parried.

Tavric retreated.

Victor followed.

Too fast.

Again.

Tavric’s left guard blocked Victor’s counter.

Second attack from Victor.

Blocked.

Third.

Tavric pivoted.

Victor continued.

He wanted to build on the lead.

Mistake.

Tavric let him.

Then turned suddenly inside Victor’s fourth strike.

Sword flat across Victor’s chest.

Scoring bell.

Four-four.

Victor stopped.

Tavric stepped away.

You liked being ahead.

Victor exhaled.

Apparently.

Tie again.

Darius’s voice carried.

Score is information.

Not identity.

Victor nodded.

Kael smiled faintly.

That one applied to rulers too.

He filed it away.

Seven minutes.

Four-four.

The match became the fastest it had been.

Not reckless.

Both had learned enough that exchanges became more deliberate and therefore quicker.

Tavric attacked first.

Victor sometimes countered.

Sometimes did not.

Victor initiated twice.

Tavric’s left guard denied both.

No score.

Then Tavric attacked high.

Victor parried.

Tavric moved left.

Victor expected the old strong-side retreat.

He followed.

Tavric stopped.

The retreat was false.

He turned into Victor.

Shoulder collision.

Victor lost balance.

Tavric’s sword came low.

Victor barely moved.

Blade touched boot armor.

Scoring bell.

Five-four Tavric.

Victor backed away.

That one bothered him.

Not because Tavric attacked first.

Because Tavric had used the old pattern after abandoning it for minutes.

Same principle Elias and Edric had used.

Old information becoming useful again.

Victor nodded to himself.

Tavric watched.

You’re learning too fast.

Victor smiled. Compliment?

Complaint.

Better.

Eight minutes.

Five-four Tavric.

Four minutes left.

Victor needed action eventually.

But not yet.

He attacked Tavric’s left side again.

Harder this time.

Tavric blocked.

Victor struck same side twice.

Three times.

Tavric’s defense remained excellent.

Victor withdrew.

Tavric looked confused.

Why keep attacking there?

Victor answered, Because everyone told me not to.

That sounded exactly like Victor.

Kael groaned.

Mira smiled.

Maybe there’s more.

There was.

Next exchange, Victor attacked left again.

Tavric blocked.

Victor did not try to beat the guard.

Instead he hit the same position on Tavric’s blade.

Hard.

Aura.

Tavric absorbed.

Victor stepped away.

Again.

Same target.

Tavric blocked.

Victor struck blade.

Aura.

Not huge.

Repeated.

Marcus understood.

He’s tiring the arm.

Elias shook his head slightly. More than that.

Tavric trusted the left defense enough to accept impact instead of moving.

Victor was making that trust expensive.

Kael smiled.

Leon and Cassel.

Mira and Selene.

Damien and Aris.

Different problem.

Same idea.

Make the strength work.

Tavric realized.

Next time Victor attacked left, Tavric did not block traditionally.

He moved.

Victor’s blade passed.

Victor smiled.

There.

Tavric had surrendered the response he preferred.

Victor changed direction and followed the movement.

Second strike.

Tavric parried from the right.

Less practiced.

Victor pressed.

Third.

Blocked.

Fourth.

Tavric retreated.

Victor stopped.

No overchase.

Good.

The left defense remained strong.

But now Tavric knew Victor would make him pay for using it repeatedly.

That hesitation mattered.

Nine minutes.

Five-four Tavric.

Victor feinted left.

Tavric moved instead of blocking.

Victor had expected.

He stepped into center.

Tavric tried attacking first from the new angle.

Victor parried.

Counter.

Tavric’s left guard rose.

Victor changed strike midway.

Right side.

Tavric reacted late.

Blade touched shoulder.

Scoring bell.

Five-five.

Blackwood erupted.

Victor did not celebrate.

Excellent.

He stepped back.

Tavric shook out his left arm once.

Tiny.

Victor saw it.

So did everyone paying attention.

House Greymark became quieter.

Marchioness Sabine watched with her chin resting against one hand.

Not worried.

Interested.

Victor had made her knight adapt.

That might matter more than a clean win.

Three minutes remained.

Tie.

Tavric stopped attacking first.

Again.

This time Victor understood immediately.

He did not rush.

They circled.

The crowd disliked it.

The fighters did not care.

Victor stepped forward.

Tavric moved.

Victor feinted.

No response.

Tavric stepped.

Victor adjusted.

For almost twenty seconds neither attacked.

Then Victor laughed.

Tavric frowned. What?

You’re waiting for me to get annoyed.

Yes.

Victor nodded. Fair.

Then he attacked.

Tavric smiled.

Expected.

But Victor’s first strike was intentionally weak.

Tavric’s left defense parried too strongly.

Victor let the sword be redirected.

Used the motion.

Spun his wrist.

Changed grip.

The blade returned from underneath.

Tavric’s eyes widened.

He stepped back.

Victor’s sword scraped chest armor.

Scoring bell.

Six-five Victor.

The arena exploded.

Mira stood.

That was good.

Victor reset.

Tavric stared at him.

You let me parry you.

Victor smiled. Hurt emotionally.

Tavric laughed.

Two minutes twenty.

Victor led.

Now Tavric had to create action.

He attacked first again.

But the meaning had changed.

Earlier, he attacked because it was his preference.

Now he attacked because the score demanded it.

Victor knew.

Tavric knew he knew.

First strike.

Victor blocked.

Second.

Moved.

Third.

Tavric continued.

Victor retreated.

Fourth.

Victor parried.

Tavric stayed close.

Victor wanted space.

Tavric denied.

Fifth.

Victor blocked.

Sixth.

Tavric’s tempo increased.

Victor could not simply wait forever.

He countered.

Tavric’s left defense caught the blade.

Then Tavric used the block to turn Victor toward the boundary.

Kael leaned forward.

There.

Victor stepped back.

One.

Two.

Boundary far but closing.

Tavric attacked.

Victor blocked.

Retreated.

Another.

Tavric cut off right.

Victor moved left.

Tavric’s sword threatened.

Victor returned center.

Tavric followed.

One minute forty.

Victor still led six-five.

No boundary exits.

Tavric’s pressure became less about scoring and more about shrinking Victor’s movement.

Victor recognized.

Instead of continuing backward, he stepped forward.

Inside Tavric’s next attack.

Tavric shortened the strike.

Victor blocked.

Shoulder to shoulder.

Victor stronger.

Tavric tried slipping away left.

Victor anticipated.

He trapped the left-side movement with his body.

Tavric turned right instead.

Good adaptation.

Victor’s sword came down.

Tavric blocked.

They separated.

One minute fifteen.

No score.

Both breathing harder.

Tavric’s left arm visibly tired now.

Victor’s earlier shoulder injury was beginning to stiffen too.

Each had information.

Each had costs.

One minute.

Tavric attacked.

Victor parried.

Second.

Victor moved.

Third.

Tavric feinted.

Victor waited.

Good.

Real strike came low.

Victor blocked.

Tavric’s sword slid.

He stepped in.

Pommel toward Victor’s shoulder.

Victor ducked.

Counter.

Tavric blocked left.

Pain.

The guard moved slower.

Victor saw.

He attacked left again.

Tavric chose to move instead.

Victor followed.

Too fast?

Maybe.

Tavric suddenly stopped.

Victor nearly collided.

Trap.

Tavric thrust.

Victor twisted.

Blade scraped his side armor.

Scoring bell.

Six-six.

The Coliseum erupted.

Forty-three seconds.

Tie.

Victor closed his eyes for one breath.

Opened.

No anger.

No rush.

Tavric reset.

Both knew a judges’ decision was possible.

Neither wanted to rely on it.

Kael gripped the rail.

Thirty-five seconds.

They circled.

No attack.

Thirty.

Tavric moved first.

Of course.

Victor smiled.

Tavric thrust high.

Victor parried.

Second low.

Victor stepped away.

Third.

Tavric changed mid-motion.

Victor blocked.

Twenty.

Victor countered.

Tavric left defense.

Slow.

Victor pressed.

Second strike same side.

Blocked.

Tavric retreated.

Fifteen.

Victor followed one step.

Stopped.

Tavric expected chase.

His counter began.

Victor had wanted it.

He slipped outside the blade.

Ten.

Tavric recovered.

Victor attacked right.

Blocked.

Seven.

Left.

Tavric’s tired arm rose.

Five.

Victor stopped the blade before contact.

Tavric’s guard still moved fully.

Overcommitment.

Victor changed direction.

Three.

Thrust center.

Tavric twisted.

Two.

Blade touched chest armor.

Scoring bell.

One.

Final bell.

For half a second nobody reacted.

Then the Coliseum detonated.

Victor stood with his sword still extended.

Tavric looked down at the scoring mark across his chest.

Seven-six.

No boundary exits.

No decision needed if the contact stood.

The judge checked the timing.

Victor did not move.

Kael barely breathed.

Grand Herald Ken received confirmation.

Final contact is valid.

Blackwood erupted before the formal announcement.

Ken continued over the noise.

Winner by score—

Sir Victor Ravenshade of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Victor lowered his sword.

No scream.

No raised arms.

Not yet.

He looked toward Tavric first.

The Greymark knight exhaled and extended his forearm.

Victor accepted.

You waited.

Tavric said.

Victor smiled. Hated every second.

Tavric laughed.

Your last feint was good.

You taught me.

I regret that.

Good.

Victor froze.

Tavric grinned.

The crowd was still roaring when Victor finally turned toward Blackwood.

Then he raised both arms.

There was the Victor everyone knew.

Hugo shouted.

Marcus laughed.

Mira whistled.

Elias clapped from his seat.

Kael stood with the others.

Victor had not become patient.

That would have been the wrong lesson.

He had become capable of patience when patience gave his aggression something worth attacking.

That was different.

Better.

Darius waited in the corridor.

Victor entered with enough energy to pretend he had not just fought twelve minutes.

He stopped in front of Darius.

I know.

Darius folded his arms.

Do you?

Why did I win?

Darius said nothing.

Victor took that as confirmation.

He thought before answering.

I stopped treating Tavric’s first attack like he had already taken initiative. Sometimes he moved first because I made him.

Darius nodded.

I used his left defense until he had to choose whether to keep trusting it.

Another nod.

I got baited when I tried taking momentum back after I was behind.

Yes.

And when I took the lead.

Yes.

Victor grimaced. That part was embarrassing.

Useful.

Victor looked toward Kael. He’s infected too.

Kael smiled.

Victor continued. I also used the same strong-side habit twice after he changed it, and he punished me when he brought it back.

Darius nodded. Good.

Victor waited.

Darius continued, What did you do correctly in the final exchange?

Victor’s expression became more serious.

I made him think I was attacking the tired arm because I had been targeting it for minutes. When he committed to protecting it, I used the movement instead of trying to break the defense.

Yes.

Darius stepped closer. You did not win because you became less aggressive.

Victor nodded.

You won because you stopped treating aggression as proof that you were controlling the fight.

That landed.

Victor looked toward his sword.

Darius continued. Tavric controlled several exchanges while moving backward. You controlled several while defending. Initiative belongs to the person shaping the useful choices, not necessarily the person swinging first.

Victor looked up.

Yes, Sir.

Darius gave one nod.

Good fight.

Victor’s smile appeared instantly.

Six.

Everyone groaned.

Darius frowned. Six what?

Victor looked toward Marcus.

Marcus looked toward Elias.

Elias looked toward Kael.

Nobody answered.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Kael smiled. You probably don’t want to know.

Correct.

The bracket changed.

Sir Victor Ravenshade — ADVANCES TO ROUND OF SIXTEEN

Victor stared at the line.

Round of sixteen.

Leon beside him.

Mira too.

Edric Vale remained alive elsewhere in the bracket.

Marcus’s next opponent had not been finalized.

Damien already waited in the spear quarterfinals.

Kael looked around at the names still standing.

What had begun as a mass tournament was becoming personal.

Every remaining line had history behind it now.

Someone had adapted.

Someone had survived a bad matchup.

Someone had defeated another person who had deserved to advance too.

The brackets were no longer full of potential.

They were full of evidence.

A Greymark representative approached Victor before he even reached the healer corridor.

Victor looked at the stag-and-river clasp.

Oh no.

The man smiled.

Sir Victor Ravenshade?

Victor glanced toward Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

Victor pointed at him. Don’t.

Kael lowered them, still smiling.

The representative continued. Marchioness Sabine Greymark requests a conversation with you at the Imperial Ball.

Victor stared.

I just eliminated her knight.

The representative’s smile widened slightly. She is aware.

Why does she want to speak with me?

Because Sir Tavric Dorn recommended it.

Victor looked back toward the arena.

Tavric?

Yes.

Victor seemed genuinely caught off guard.

The representative continued. The Marchioness values fighters who can change without losing the qualities that made them worth watching in the first place.

Mira glanced toward Darius.

That sounds familiar.

Darius ignored her.

Victor accepted after a moment.

Fine. Conversation.

No promises.

None requested.

After the representative left, Victor looked toward Kael.

This tournament is strange.

Kael nodded.

You beat someone and they help you get invited somewhere.

Elias answered from behind them. Sometimes you lose and it happens too.

Victor looked toward him.

You’re never letting that go, are you?

No.

Good.

Victor turned slowly.

Kael burst out laughing.

Later, when the morning crowd began leaving for the meal interval, Kael remained before the updated bracket.

Darius stopped beside him.

You look worried.

Kael considered denying it.

Then remembered everyone in Aurelia had apparently developed an allergy to convenient answers.

A little.

Why?

Kael nodded toward the surviving Blackwood names.

They’re going farther than I expected.

Darius looked at him.

You expected them to fail?

No.

But I expected the tournament to expose how new they are.

It has.

Kael frowned.

Darius continued. Advancing does not erase that.

Marcus still wastes Aura.

Leon still searches for correct answers under pressure.

Victor still becomes emotional about momentum.

Damien still trusts patterns once he believes he has solved them.

Mira is still capable of making a simple exchange unnecessarily complicated because she enjoys it.

Kael smiled faintly.

And Elias waits.

Yes.

Darius looked toward the bracket.

The difference is that now they know the weaknesses belong to them.

That sounded obvious.

It wasn’t.

Kael understood after a moment.

Before, Darius could tell them.

Now opponents had proven it.

Exactly.

The lesson belonged to them because they had paid for it.

Bruises.

Scores.

Lost ground.

Elias’s elimination.

Brennar’s loss.

Kael looked toward Victor being dragged toward the healer by Lily while insisting his shoulder was perfectly functional.

Then he laughed.

Darius glanced over.

What?

I was just thinking Blackwood is becoming expensive.

Darius almost smiled.

Wait until the ball.

Kael’s amusement disappeared.

Right.

Tomorrow night, the tournament would temporarily give way to something none of the Black Dragons could solve with a sword.

Noble Houses.

Military patrons.

Marriage offers.

Old family claims.

New loyalties.

Kael stared at the bracket one last time.

Victor had learned that the first move did not decide who controlled the fight.

He suspected the same would be true at the Imperial Ball.

The people who approached first would not necessarily be the people who mattered most.

And this time Darius could not stand beside every Black Dragon and tell them which opening was bait.
