The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Damien Ravenmoor was not where Kael expected him to be.

The preparation chamber beneath the Spear arena was nearly empty when Kael, Darius, Victor, Leon, Mira, and Marcus arrived. One tournament attendant sat at a desk near the entrance, while another checked a rack of blunted spearheads against the official equipment list. Damien’s usual bench was empty.

Kael looked toward Darius. ”Where is he?”

Darius did not answer immediately. He asked the attendant instead.

The man pointed toward a narrow doorway at the far end of the chamber. ”Training court, Sir. He requested ten minutes alone.”

Victor frowned. ”Before the final?”

Mira looked at him. ”Especially before the final.”

Kael started toward the doorway, but Darius caught his shoulder.

”Do not crowd him.”

”I wasn’t going to.”

”You brought five people.”

Kael glanced behind him.

Victor raised a hand. ”I followed.”

”So did I,” Mira said.

Leon folded his arms. ”At some point this stopped being Kael’s fault.”

Darius looked unimpressed. ”Stay here.”

Kael pointed toward himself. ”Me too?”

”You may come.”

Victor looked betrayed. ”Why does he get special permission?”

”Because he is the commander of the House Damien represents.”

Kael smiled slightly.

Darius immediately added, ”Do not become pleased with that.”

Kael’s smile vanished.

The two of them continued through the doorway.

The training court beyond was small, open to the sky, and mostly hidden from the tournament crowds by high stone walls. Damien stood in the center with his spear resting against one shoulder. He was not practicing combinations or building Aura. He was simply walking the perimeter.

One circuit.

Then another.

Kael understood after watching him for several seconds.

He was measuring the space.

Damien noticed them and stopped. ”Forty-five feet across the long side. Slightly less on the short. Final arena is larger.”

Darius stepped beside the wall. ”Why measure this one?”

”Because I needed something physical to think about.”

Kael leaned against the doorway. ”Nervous?”

Damien considered lying.

Then didn’t.

”Yes.”

The answer carried no shame.

Kael appreciated that.

Darius asked, ”About Corren Dain?”

”Partly.”

”About the final?”

Damien looked toward him. ”Mostly.”

There it was.

The same problem Darius had warned him about before the semifinal.

This time, however, there actually was no later round.

The final was real.

Damien walked toward the center and lowered his spear. ”I keep thinking about what happens if I win.”

Darius said nothing.

Damien continued. ”The Morcant offer. Blackwood. The attention after this. Whether winning makes leaving look worse. Whether losing makes taking the offer look like I’m running somewhere else because I failed here.”

Kael felt that immediately.

The tournament had become entangled with everything waiting outside it.

Damien had entered as one of Blackwood’s founding fighters. Now a major House had offered him six months of frontier staff service with the possibility of a permanent commission. Reaching the Spear final had increased his value without simplifying his choice.

Kael stepped farther into the court. ”Winning doesn’t decide whether you stay.”

Damien looked at him.

”Neither does losing,” Kael continued. ”Morcant’s offer existed before the final. Blackwood existed before the final. You don’t owe either one a decision based on what happens in twelve minutes.”

Damien looked down at the spear.

Darius nodded once. ”Correct.”

Kael glanced toward him. ”You could sound more surprised when I say something useful.”

”I’m trying not to distract Damien.”

Kael sighed.

Damien smiled despite himself.

That helped.

Darius stepped into the center of the court. ”Now tell me about Corren Dain.”

Damien’s expression became serious again. ”Thirty-nine. Third Legion. Former frontier centurion. Heavy spear, but not Halric-heavy. Strong Aura. Excellent endurance. He controls forward lanes and punishes disengagement.”

”What does that mean?”

”If I enter badly, leaving may be harder than entering.”

”Good. What else?”

Damien thought. ”He has more experience than me. Probably more battlefield experience than anyone I’ve fought in the tournament.”

”Does that change the length of your spear?”

”No.”

”Your reach?”

”No.”

”Your rules?”

”No.”

Damien exhaled slowly.

Darius continued. ”Experience is real. Respect it. Do not worship it.”

Kael folded his arms.

That was very Darius.

Damien nodded. ”He has been in three semifinals and one final.”

”Yes.”

”He knows what this feels like.”

”More than you.”

Damien waited for the correction.

Darius gave it.

”That does not mean he knows what this match will feel like.”

Damien looked toward him.

”Corren Dain has never fought you in an Imperial final,” Darius said. ”You have never fought him. His experience gives him tools. It does not give him ownership of the next twelve minutes.”

Damien’s grip loosened slightly.

Kael could see the nerves changing shape.

Not disappearing.

Becoming manageable.

Darius pointed toward the practice marks on the floor. ”Now stop walking.”

Damien frowned. ”Why?”

”You’ve measured the court four times.”

Damien looked toward the walls.

Kael smiled. ”He counted.”

”Of course he did.”

Darius took the spear from Damien’s hand, checked the grip wrapping, and handed it back. ”You are not going to solve the final in here.”

Damien nodded.

The second tournament horn sounded from beyond the walls.

Fifteen minutes.

Darius turned toward the door. ”Good.”

Damien stared at him.

Kael nearly laughed.

Darius noticed. ”What?”

”Nothing.”

He was definitely enjoying that word now.

Sir Corren Dain entered the arena without ceremony.

That suited him.

He was broad through the chest without being massive, with close-cut dark hair heavily streaked with gray and a nose that had clearly been broken more than once. His armor was standard tournament protection rather than decorative House equipment, and the Third Imperial Legion emblem appeared as a small metal clasp near his shoulder.

His spear was longer than Damien’s.

Not dramatically.

Enough to matter.

Marcus leaned forward from the Blackwood section. ”He changed grips between matches.”

Darius nodded.

Kael looked over. ”You noticed too?”

”His earlier rounds used a wider rear grip. He shortened it in the semifinal.”

”Why?”

Darius watched Corren test the spearhead against the sand. ”Perhaps because his semifinal opponent tried to stay outside him. Perhaps because his hand was injured. Perhaps because he prefers something different against Damien.”

Kael nodded. ”Unknown.”

”Yes.”

The answer no longer frustrated him as much.

Damien entered beneath the Blackwood side.

The crowd’s reaction rolled through the arena with enough force to make Victor grin on his behalf. Damien did not acknowledge it beyond a brief inclination of his head.

He looked toward Corren.

Corren looked back.

No hostility.

No theatrical intimidation.

Just recognition.

Two finalists.

The referee brought them together.

”Sir Damien Ravenmoor.”

”Sir Corren Dain.”

Both saluted.

Corren spoke first. ”First final?”

Damien nodded. ”Yes.”

Corren adjusted his grip. ”Try to enjoy some of it.”

Damien smiled faintly. ”Is that advice?”

”No. I failed to do it last time.”

That answer changed Damien’s expression.

The experienced veteran was not invulnerable to the moment either.

Kael liked that.

The referee reviewed the rules. Twelve minutes. Three boundary violations meant elimination. Clean scoring strikes counted at judges’ discretion. Excessive force after a stoppage would result in penalty. The championship would be decided by score or judgment if tied.

Then he stepped away.

The arena quieted.

Kael felt his own heartbeat rising.

Darius remained still.

The referee lowered his arm.

The Spear final began.

Corren took center immediately.

Not quickly.

Decisively.

Damien moved left.

Corren turned with him.

Damien tested the outer range with one short thrust.

Corren’s spear moved less than Kael expected. He did not fully parry. He angled his shaft just enough to guide Damien’s weapon away.

Damien withdrew.

Corren followed one step.

Then stopped.

Damien circled right.

Corren turned again.

Kael understood why the report described forward-lane control.

Corren did not chase Damien around the arena.

He occupied the spaces Damien would need if he wanted to move forward safely.

Victor frowned. ”He’s barely doing anything.”

Leon shook his head. ”He’s making Damien go around him.”

Mira leaned forward. ”And every route around is longer.”

Damien tested another entry.

Corren moved the spearhead toward his chest.

Not an attack.

A threat.

Damien changed direction before reaching striking distance.

Nothing scored.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then Corren attacked.

One thrust.

Long.

Direct.

Damien stepped outside and tried to counter toward the forearm.

Corren shortened his grip immediately.

The long spear became a shorter weapon in the middle of the exchange.

He knocked Damien’s counter away and stepped forward.

Damien retreated.

Corren followed.

Damien moved again.

Corren stopped.

No score.

But Damien had lost the center.

Darius’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Kael noticed. ”Problem?”

”Information.”

Damien had just learned that Corren’s reach could change faster than expected.

That made entering more dangerous.

The first minute ended without a point.

Corren scored first.

The exchange began near the eastern side of the arena. Damien moved toward Corren’s weapon hand and offered a shallow thrust. Corren parried.

Damien did not disengage.

He rotated the spear and tried to enter inside the longer weapon.

Corren allowed him.

That was the trap.

The moment Damien shortened the distance, Corren moved his rear hand farther up the shaft and turned the weapon across his body.

The butt end struck Damien’s ribs.

Clean.

The judges signaled.

Corren — 1

Damien stepped back.

Victor blinked. ”The other end counts?”

Darius nodded. ”The spear is the entire weapon.”

Corren returned to his original grip.

Damien looked at him differently now.

He had entered expecting the long spear to become awkward at close distance.

Instead, Corren had turned close distance into another lane.

Damien reset.

No frustration.

Good.

The referee restarted them.

Damien circled again.

This time he did not immediately try to solve the long reach.

He made Corren reveal it.

One feint.

No reaction.

Second.

Corren shifted the spearhead.

Damien watched the rear hand.

There.

Corren adjusted slightly before every major shortening movement.

Small.

But visible.

Damien tested again.

Corren shortened.

Damien did not enter.

Instead, he stepped backward.

Corren’s counter found nothing.

Damien smiled faintly.

Corren noticed.

The next exchange would not be the same.

At two minutes, Damien attacked the rear hand.

Not with his spearhead.

With position.

He circled toward the side that forced Corren to rotate the longer shaft across his own body. Corren adjusted.

Damien changed direction.

Corren followed.

Damien stepped in.

Corren shortened the grip.

Damien stepped out again.

Then immediately attacked from the opposite angle before Corren restored the full reach.

Corren parried late.

Damien’s spear touched the upper arm.

The judges signaled.

1–1

The crowd erupted.

Damien retreated before Corren could create a continuation.

Corren nodded once.

Not approval.

Recognition.

Kael looked toward Darius. ”He attacked the transition between grips.”

”Yes.”

Leon smiled faintly. ”Everyone in this tournament attacks transitions.”

Darius looked toward him. ”Because people are vulnerable while changing what they are doing.”

Leon nodded.

That lesson had become personal for him.

Kael noticed he no longer seemed bitter about it.

Corren changed the grip less often after that.

He kept the spear slightly shorter by default.

The adjustment sacrificed some reach but reduced the transition Damien had exploited.

Damien saw it.

So did Kael.

The match became more physical.

Corren used his size and structure to occupy center.

Damien used footwork to approach at angles.

At three minutes, they entered a prolonged weapon bind.

Shaft against shaft.

Pressure.

Damien tried to rotate outward.

Corren followed.

Damien changed direction.

Corren stayed attached.

Victor leaned forward. ”Get out.”

Darius did not say anything.

Damien tried again.

Corren increased pressure.

The mistake from Damien’s semifinal against Torren flashed immediately in Kael’s mind.

The unnecessary bind.

Pride.

Damien must have remembered too.

He stopped trying to win it.

Instead, he released the pressure completely and stepped backward.

Corren’s spear moved farther than intended.

Damien struck toward the hand.

Corren barely withdrew.

No score.

But Damien had escaped.

Darius nodded.

Kael smiled. ”He remembered.”

”Yes.”

Damien had not turned the previous lesson into a rule that binds were always bad.

He had simply recognized when this one was no longer buying anything.

That was better.

At four minutes, Corren forced the first boundary violation.

He did it without striking Damien once.

Damien circled.

Corren shifted center.

Damien tried to change side.

Corren’s spearhead occupied the route.

Damien stepped backward instead.

Corren advanced.

Damien moved laterally.

Corren followed with a smaller angle that cut the escape.

Damien’s boot crossed the line.

The official raised the marker.

Damien — 1 boundary violation

Corren stepped away immediately.

No celebration.

No wasted attack.

Damien returned to center.

Kael frowned. ”He built that slowly.”

Darius nodded. ”He did not force Damien backward. He made each forward option worse until backward became comfortable.”

That was more dangerous.

Damien looked toward the boundary once.

Then back at Corren.

The referee restarted them.

Corren took center again.

Damien did something unexpected.

He gave it to him.

Rather than contesting the middle, Damien moved toward the outer third immediately.

Victor stared. ”He just went back toward the line.”

Mira shook her head. ”Different reason.”

Damien was not being driven.

He had chosen the space.

Corren advanced carefully.

Damien moved parallel to the boundary.

Corren tried to shape the exit.

Damien waited.

When Corren stepped slightly too far toward the outside lane, Damien cut inward.

Fast.

Corren turned.

Damien did not attack.

He passed the spearhead, crossed toward center, and made Corren rotate completely.

Then Damien struck as the larger man turned.

Clean touch to the shoulder.

Damien — 2

The arena roared.

Damien had used the boundary as bait.

Not recklessly.

He chose the risk while he still had room to leave.

Corren stepped away and looked toward the line.

Then at Damien.

”You like dangerous places.”

Damien’s breathing remained steady. ”Only when I choose them.”

Corren smiled.

The referee reset them.

Half the match remained.

Damien led 2–1 but carried one boundary violation.

Corren’s breathing remained almost unchanged.

Damien’s was heavier.

The endurance advantage was beginning to matter.

Corren knew it.

He did not accelerate.

That was the intelligent choice.

He made Damien work.

Long threat.

Small adjustment.

Forward pressure.

Occasional short attack.

Each action forced Damien to move farther than Corren did.

The difference was not dramatic.

Over minutes, it accumulated.

Kael saw Damien’s shoulders rising more with each breath.

Marcus noticed too. ”Corren is spending less.”

Darius nodded. ”Yes.”

Damien attacked.

Corren parried.

Damien disengaged.

Corren took one step.

Damien had to take two to preserve the preferred angle.

Another exchange.

Same cost.

No points.

But the fight was changing.

At six minutes thirty, Corren attacked with the butt end again.

Damien expected it.

He moved outside.

Corren changed.

Instead of completing the close strike, he extended the spear behind him and turned the front end back into the fight.

The motion looked almost impossible until Kael understood the grip.

Corren had never fully committed to the shortened weapon.

Damien was caught between distances.

The spearhead touched his thigh.

2–2

Damien retreated.

This time frustration appeared.

Small.

Enough.

Corren saw it.

He stepped forward.

Damien raised his weapon harder than necessary.

Darius’s expression tightened.

The next exchange came fast.

Corren thrust.

Damien knocked it aside.

Corren recovered.

Damien attacked aggressively.

Corren moved back.

Damien followed.

One step.

Two.

Corren had been waiting.

He turned the spear horizontal and drove the shaft into Damien’s advance.

Damien barely stopped.

Corren’s reverse strike came toward the shoulder.

Damien ducked.

No score.

But his breathing worsened.

Darius called only one word from the rail.

”Cost.”

Damien heard him.

His eyes closed for half a second.

Then reopened.

He stepped away.

Seven minutes thirty.

Score 2–2.

One boundary against Damien.

Corren remained fresher.

The obvious story of the match was beginning to write itself.

Young fighter starts well.

Veteran survives.

Endurance takes over.

Kael felt himself believing it.

Then he stopped.

So did Damien.

The tournament had punished everyone who began fighting stories instead of people.

Damien slowed.

Corren continued applying pressure.

Damien refused to spend large movements.

A long thrust came.

Damien redirected it rather than escaping completely.

Corren stepped closer.

Damien moved only enough to preserve space.

Another attack.

Damien caught it on the shaft.

Corren tried to turn the bind.

Damien released immediately.

Corren advanced.

Damien took one short step.

No more.

The difference was visible.

Damien was conserving.

Corren noticed.

He increased the pressure slightly.

Damien did not answer with equal effort.

That forced Corren to come farther.

At eight minutes, Corren entered deeper than he had all match.

Damien waited.

The spearhead came toward his chest.

He turned sideways.

Corren shortened the grip.

Damien watched the rear hand.

Then attacked the hand itself.

The blunted spearhead touched Corren’s glove.

The judges signaled.

Damien — 3

Corren stepped back.

His expression sharpened.

Damien had turned the veteran’s versatility into a repeated point of information.

Every grip change created possibilities.

It also revealed intent.

Corren stopped changing grips.

Again.

Damien had forced another adjustment.

Kael leaned forward. ”That matters.”

Darius nodded. ”He has removed one of Corren’s tools from comfortable use.”

”Not removed completely.”

”No.”

Kael smiled. ”I was going to say that.”

”Eventually.”

The match resumed.

Corren now relied more heavily on the full spear.

That restored reach.

Damien had fewer close-range surprises to manage.

But getting inside became harder.

Tradeoff.

At nine minutes, Corren used the advantage to score.

He pushed Damien toward the western edge with repeated long threats. Damien avoided the first two. The third forced him into a narrow angle.

He tried to circle out.

Corren did not chase the body.

He placed the spearhead where Damien needed to move.

Damien stopped.

Corren attacked the other side.

Damien turned.

Clean touch to the ribs.

3–3

The crowd grew louder.

Three minutes remained.

Damien looked tired.

Corren looked tired now too.

Just less.

The veteran had not escaped the cost of the match entirely.

That mattered.

Two minutes forty.

Corren took center.

Damien circled.

Neither rushed.

Corren attacked.

Damien parried.

No counter.

Reset.

Two minutes twenty.

Damien feinted toward the hand.

Corren did not change grip.

Damien stepped closer.

Corren used the long weapon to force him back.

No score.

Two minutes.

The announcer called the time.

Kael’s hands tightened around the railing.

Victor was standing.

Mira stood beside him.

Leon remained seated but leaned forward.

Marcus watched without moving.

Darius looked almost unnaturally calm.

The next exchange began slowly.

Corren stepped.

Damien gave ground.

Corren stopped.

Damien stayed.

One minute forty.

Corren attacked low.

Damien avoided it.

Second strike high.

Damien blocked.

Corren continued forward.

Damien retreated.

One minute twenty.

The western boundary approached.

Damien already had one violation.

Corren knew it.

Damien knew he knew it.

Corren took another step.

Damien moved laterally.

Corren angled the spearhead into the lane.

Damien stopped.

One minute.

The crowd began shouting.

Corren advanced.

Damien’s heel reached the line.

Victor whispered, ”Take the boundary.”

Kael did not know whether he agreed.

One violation was survivable.

Two would make any later mistake fatal.

Fifty seconds.

Corren attacked.

Damien blocked.

The impact pushed him closer.

He could step out.

Reset center.

Accept the second warning.

Damien looked at the line.

Then at Corren’s hands.

Corren shortened his grip.

There.

Damien moved forward.

Corren had expected the retreat.

The shortened spear came across for the close strike.

Damien ducked beneath the shaft.

His own spear slid forward along Corren’s side.

The tournament head touched the lower ribs.

The judges signaled.

Damien — 4

The arena erupted.

Damien escaped centerward.

Corren immediately followed.

Thirty-two seconds.

Corren needed a point.

Damien knew it.

That knowledge was dangerous.

Corren attacked with the longest thrust of the match.

Damien moved.

Second attack.

Blocked.

Third.

Damien retreated.

Twenty seconds.

Corren accelerated with Aura.

The first real heavy burst he had used.

His spear struck Damien’s shaft hard enough to drive it aside.

Damien’s chest opened.

Kael stood.

Corren thrust.

Damien could not recover the spear in time.

So he did not try.

He stepped inside the attack.

The spearhead passed beside his ribs.

Corren changed grip.

Damien expected it.

He released his rear hand and used the middle of his spear to jam Corren’s shortening motion.

Ten seconds.

Both men were too close.

Corren drove forward with his shoulder.

Damien resisted.

Bad.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Damien remembered.

He stopped resisting.

Corren’s force carried both men sideways.

Damien pivoted with it.

Five seconds.

They separated.

Corren turned first.

Damien’s spear was low.

Corren attacked.

Three.

Damien lifted.

Steel struck wood.

Two.

Corren recovered.

Damien moved.

One.

Both thrust.

The bell sounded.

The arena exploded.

Kael could not tell what happened.

Damien and Corren stood nearly chest to chest.

Both spearheads had made contact.

Damien’s rested against Corren’s shoulder.

Corren’s touched Damien’s side.

The judges raised no markers.

Not yet.

The referee stepped between them.

Both fighters lowered their weapons.

Score remained displayed at 4–3 Damien.

If the final exchange was simultaneous, Damien won outright.

If Corren landed first, the score tied.

Then the judges would decide.

Kael felt the entire arena waiting.

The officials conferred.

One judge demonstrated the angles with his hands.

Another spoke to the side referee.

The third looked toward the timekeeper.

Damien stood at center.

Corren beside him.

Neither spoke.

Finally, the referee returned.

”Final exchange ruled simultaneous.”

The Blackwood section erupted before he finished.

The referee raised his arm.

”Final score: four to three. Winner of the Imperial Spear Division—Sir Damien Ravenmoor of Blackwood!”

For a moment, Damien did not react.

He simply stared forward.

Then Corren touched his shoulder.

Damien looked over.

The veteran extended his hand.

Damien accepted.

”Well earned,” Corren said.

Damien’s mouth opened, but no answer came immediately.

When it did, his voice was quieter than Kael expected.

”Thank you.”

Corren smiled. ”Now enjoy some of it.”

This time Damien did.

He laughed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

But the tension finally left his face.

The referee raised Damien’s arm again as the arena applauded.

Kael found himself shouting with everyone else.

Darius did not.

But he was smiling.

Actually smiling.

Kael saw it.

So did Victor.

Victor pointed immediately. ”He’s smiling!”

Darius’s expression vanished.

Mira laughed hard enough to bend forward.

Leon shook his head.

Marcus applauded.

And below them, Damien Ravenmoor stood alone at center for several seconds with the Spear Division championship finally belonging to him.

The corridor afterward was chaos.

Tournament officials needed signatures.

A healer wanted Damien’s ribs checked.

A weapons clerk wanted the spear returned.

Three minor nobles somehow managed to appear despite the competitors’ access restrictions.

Victor wanted to lift Damien onto his shoulders.

Damien threatened to stab him with a blunted spear.

Kael considered allowing it.

Darius ended the argument by telling everyone to move.

Eventually they reached the private preparation room.

Damien sat on the bench while Healer Sella Orin examined the bruising along his side. The injury was painful but superficial.

Kael stood across from him.

”You won.”

Damien looked up. ”I noticed.”

Victor leaned against the wall. ”He’s pretending to be calm.”

”I am calm.”

”You nearly cried.”

”I was sweating.”

”From your eyes?”

Damien reached for something to throw.

Leon took the cup away before he could.

The laughter faded gradually.

Then Damien looked toward Darius.

The room became quieter.

Darius stepped forward.

Damien waited.

Kael expected analysis.

The boundary pressure.

The grip transitions.

The moment Damien resisted the shoulder drive before correcting himself.

There were plenty of mistakes.

Darius probably remembered every one.

Instead, he said, ”You earned it.”

Damien stared.

So did everyone else.

Darius continued before the silence became ridiculous. ”Corren had more experience, better endurance, and a reach advantage he knew how to use. You forced him to change his grip strategy twice, stopped contesting strength when it became wasteful, and managed the final boundary sequence without surrendering judgment to the score.”

Damien’s expression tightened slightly.

Not from criticism.

From the fact that Darius had said all of it plainly.

Then Darius added, ”There were mistakes. We will review them tomorrow.”

Victor groaned. ”There he is.”

Everyone laughed.

Damien leaned back against the wall. ”Tomorrow.”

”Yes.”

”Not tonight?”

Darius considered.

”No.”

That might have been the larger gift.

Duchess Celene Morcant did not come immediately.

Her representative delivered a single written note.

Damien opened it.

Kael watched his face as he read.

”What does it say?”

Damien handed it over.

The message was short.

Congratulations. The six-month frontier evaluation remains exactly what it was before you entered the final. No additional terms. No deadline tonight. Celebrate your victory. Decide when you are rested. — Celene Morcant

Kael read it twice.

Then handed it back.

”I like her.”

Damien nodded. ”That almost makes this harder.”

”Why?”

”Because if she were awful, saying no would be easy.”

Kael laughed.

That was fair.

Damien folded the note and placed it inside his coat.

No decision.

Not tonight.

The championship did not belong to Morcant.

It did not belong to Blackwood either.

It belonged first to the man who had won it.

Kael was beginning to understand that distinction.

The official award was simpler than Victor expected.

No giant feast.

No second ball.

No parade through Aurelia.

The Spear Division finalists were called back to the arena after the remaining afternoon matches concluded. Corren Dain received formal recognition as runner-up. Damien received the tournament medallion from one of the examination officials and had his name entered into the Imperial competition register.

That was all.

It was enough.

The metal disk was heavier than it looked.

Damien turned it over in his hand after they left the arena. The Imperial dragon appeared on one side, while the other carried the year and division.

Victor immediately asked to hold it.

Damien refused.

”You don’t trust me?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”You lost your credential in your boot.”

The group laughed.

Victor looked toward Kael. ”That story is going to follow me forever.”

Kael nodded. ”Absolutely.”

For once, even Darius did not disagree.

That evening, the Blackwood group did not attend a noble reception.

They did not need one.

Kael arranged for food to be sent to the rented residence they had been using during the tournament. Nothing extravagant arrived. Roasted meat, bread, vegetables, fruit, and enough wine that Edwin would probably have objected if he had been present.

They gathered around a long table in ordinary clothes.

Damien placed the Spear medallion beside his cup.

Victor immediately reached for it.

Damien slapped his hand away.

Mira laughed. ”You waited almost twenty minutes.”

”I showed restraint.”

Leon looked toward Darius. ”Training is working.”

Darius drank quietly.

Marcus sat near the middle of the table with his Carthain invitation papers folded beside him. Mira had Joren Pellaris’s extended training schedule. Leon had an upcoming conversation with Duke Renald’s officers as well as the unresolved weight of his meeting with Garran Ashford. Victor still had a Swordsman semifinal ahead of him.

Elias and Brennar joined them later.

Neither had competed that day.

Both still belonged at the table.

That mattered to Kael.

He looked around at everyone.

Some had won.

Some had lost.

One now had a championship medal.

Several had offers from other Houses.

None of those results made anyone more or less part of the group tonight.

Victor raised his cup. ”To Damien.”

Everyone followed.

Damien looked uncomfortable.

Mira smiled. ”You’re supposed to say something.”

”No.”

”You won the Spear Division.”

”That does not make me a public speaker.”

Victor nodded seriously. ”A tragic limitation.”

Damien looked around the table.

Then finally raised his cup.

”To everyone who got hit so I could learn from it.”

Marcus laughed first.

Leon followed.

Even Darius looked amused.

They drank.

Kael leaned back in his chair.

This was better than another ball.

No nobles assessing them.

No offers hidden inside compliments.

No politics disguised as conversation.

Just people who had spent weeks training together, hurting together, arguing, losing, improving, and occasionally winning.

For the first time in several days, nobody needed the moment to become anything else.

The Swordsman tournament was not finished.

Victor still had work ahead.

Edric still remained.

Other House decisions waited.

Blackwood still had a bridge problem, a sealed foundation compartment, military structure to refine, and an entire territory that had continued functioning without Kael hovering over it.

Tomorrow could carry all of that.

Tonight, Damien had won.

So they let him win.

And for once, that was enough.
