The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The letter from the Imperial Church created three separate problems before breakfast.

The first was practical.

Solmara was farther from Blackwood than anyone in the household had expected Elias and Marcus to travel for their consecration.

The second was political.

Kael could not simply assemble a large Black Dragon escort and ride into territory governed by the Imperial Church as though he were entering another part of his own domain.

The third was sitting across from him at breakfast with his arms folded.

”I still think this is unnecessary,” Elias said.

Marcus looked toward him. ”Which part?”

”The interview.”

”The Archdeacon?”

”Yes.”

”The examination?”

”No.”

”The oath?”

”No.”

”The investigation into the time you broke a nobleman’s son’s nose?”

Elias stared at him.

Marcus smiled faintly.

Kael looked down at his breakfast to hide his own.

Elias pointed toward Marcus. ”You abandoned a military post.”

”For eleven minutes.”

”You still abandoned it.”

”To save two children.”

”You see how easy this is?”

”Yes.”

”That is my point.”

Kael finally looked up. ”Your point appears to be that both of you have exactly the kind of disciplinary history an examiner would want to ask about.”

Elias frowned.

Lily entered carrying a stack of folded linens and paused long enough to say, ”You broke his nose?”

Elias closed his eyes.

Marcus laughed.

”That was three years ago.”

”Why?”

”He was beating a stable boy.”

Lily’s expression changed.

”Oh.”

Elias opened one eye.

Marcus leaned back. ”That reaction is why the Church is interviewing him.”

Lily looked toward Marcus. ”And you?”

”No.”

Kael smiled.

Lily immediately became suspicious.

”What did he do?”

Marcus sighed.

”He left a bridge post during flooding.”

Lily waited.

”To save two children.”

Her expression changed again.

Marcus pointed toward her. ”Exactly.”

Kael laughed.

Lily looked between them. ”Then what is the Church trying to decide?”

Darius answered from the far end of the table.

”Whether the decisions reveal conduct appropriate to a knight.”

Lily frowned. ”Saving children?”

”Leaving a post.”

”Stopping someone from beating a child?”

”Assaulting the son of a local lord.”

Lily considered both examples.

”That sounds inconvenient.”

”Law often is,” Darius said.

Kael looked toward him.

”So is morality.”

Darius met his eyes.

”Yes.”

That answer came too easily.

Kael suspected another lesson was approaching.

He decided not to invite it before finishing breakfast.

Edwin arrived several minutes later with a rolled map beneath one arm.

Kael noticed immediately.

”Solmara?”

”The route.”

That ended the conversation about Elias’s fist.

For now.

Edwin cleared one side of the table and unrolled the map.

Kael had seen Imperial maps countless times in Aurelia, but he had rarely looked at them from the perspective of actually crossing the land rather than memorizing names for tutors.

Blackwood sat west of the Imperial Province of Aurelia.

Aurelia itself occupied the central portion of the province, surrounded by roads that spread outward like veins from the Imperial Seat.

North of the province began Solmara.

The border was not a wall.

No great mountain range separated the two territories.

The change was administrative before it was geographic.

Kael placed one finger over Blackwood.

”Our fastest route?”

Edwin traced east.

”From Blackwood to the western Imperial road. From there northeast through the outer districts of the Imperial Province of Aurelia, then north.”

His finger crossed a thin line marking a river.

”The southern boundary of Solmara begins beyond the Arven River.”

Kael looked at the map.

”How long?”

”Five days with a modest party and good weather.”

Marcus frowned. ”The Church letter says the session is in eleven.”

”Yes.”

”So Malrec arrives in three days.”

”Yes.”

”Interviews us.”

”Yes.”

”Then if he approves?”

”We would need to leave shortly afterward.”

Elias stared at the map.

”So we are basically waiting for a priest to decide whether we pack.”

Kael looked toward him.

”Archdeacon.”

”Still a priest.”

Darius spoke without looking up.

”You should practice saying that with slightly more respect before he arrives.”

Marcus laughed.

Elias frowned at everyone.

Kael returned to the map.

The route entered Solmara from the southwest before continuing north toward its administrative and religious center.

He saw smaller settlements marked along the road.

Some names meant nothing to him.

Others he vaguely remembered from history lessons.

Pilgrimage towns.

Old monasteries.

A battlefield where Imperial troops and Church healers had established one of the first permanent military hospitals centuries earlier.

A market settlement built around caravans serving religious estates.

Kael looked toward Edwin.

”Who maintains the roads once we cross into Solmara?”

”The Church administration maintains the major routes directly or through local agreements.”

”No Imperial road office?”

”Not in the same manner as the Imperial Province.”

Kael leaned closer.

”And military patrols?”

”Imperial soldiers may move through Solmara under established agreements. The Church maintains its own guards for estates, roads, archives, religious sites, and certain civic responsibilities.”

That interested Kael more.

”So Augustus does not station a Legion there?”

”Not permanently without agreement.”

Elias looked toward Edwin. ”Could the Emperor order one in?”

The room quieted slightly.

Edwin considered the wording before answering.

”The Emperor possesses authority throughout the Empire.”

”That wasn’t the question,” Kael said.

Edwin looked toward him.

Kael smiled faintly.

”You taught me that.”

”Yes.”

Edwin rested one hand against the map.

”In practical terms, deploying an Imperial Legion into Solmara without coordination with the Church would be an extraordinary political act.”

”Legal?”

”Possibly.”

”Wise?”

”No.”

Darius answered that one.

Kael looked toward him.

”Because?”

”Because authority and legitimacy are different resources.”

There it was.

The lesson had arrived anyway.

Darius continued. ”An Emperor may possess the legal power to do something and still damage the institutions that make his rule easier to obey.”

Kael thought about Edwin’s answer from two days earlier.

Borrowed trust.

A knight carried it.

Apparently emperors did too.

Marcus looked toward the map.

”What if the Church refused an Imperial order?”

”That depends entirely on the order,” Darius said.

Elias frowned. ”That sounds like every answer anyone gives about the Church.”

”Because the relationship has existed longer than anyone in this room.”

Kael glanced toward Edwin.

”Except possibly you.”

Edwin looked offended.

”Your Highness.”

Kael smiled.

The map remained open long after breakfast ended.

The more Kael studied it, the more Solmara stopped looking like a single religious complex and started looking like what it actually was.

A territory.

People lived there.

Farmers.

Craftsmen.

Merchants.

Families.

Not everyone in Solmara wore robes or spent the day copying holy texts.

The Church governed land because land contained ordinary problems.

Roads still washed out.

Bridges still needed repair.

Crops still failed.

Crimes still happened.

Children still needed schools.

Kael found himself wondering how the Church administered taxes.

Then property.

Then water rights.

Then disputes between lay villages and Church estates.

Then whether knights consecrated in Solmara were expected to understand any of that.

Darius noticed him staring at the map.

”Stop.”

Kael looked up.

”I said nothing.”

”You are trying to redesign Solmara.”

”I am trying to understand it.”

”You have been looking at the drainage markings for three minutes.”

Kael looked down.

He had.

Marcus smiled.

Elias shook his head.

Kael rolled the map halfway closed.

”Fine.”

Edwin quietly stopped him.

”You may need that later.”

Kael narrowed his eyes.

Edwin’s expression did not change.

Traitor.

The morning belonged to preparation for Malrec’s visit.

The Archdeacon had requested five sets of records.

The Knight Examination reports for Elias and Marcus.

Their military service records.

Any disciplinary actions.

Statements from commanders.

And relevant House records concerning conduct that might affect recognition.

Kael disliked the phrasing of the last category.

”What counts as relevant?”

Edwin looked at the request.

”Apparently whatever the House believes might affect recognition.”

”That is dangerously subjective.”

”Yes.”

”So if we leave something out because we consider it irrelevant, and Malrec considers it relevant?”

”He may ask why.”

Kael sighed.

Galahad, who had joined them in the study while waiting for a construction invoice, looked amused.

”You dislike being examined.”

”I am not being examined.”

”House Kael is.”

Kael looked at him.

Galahad smiled.

”That is worse, isn’t it?”

”Yes.”

Darius brought Elias’s service record first.

It was remarkably clean except for one incident.

Kael read the disciplinary notation.

Unauthorized violence against a civilian member of a noble household.

The phrasing made the event sound worse.

He read the witness statements.

That made Elias look better.

A stable boy named Rian had been struck repeatedly by the local lord’s eighteen-year-old son after dropping a saddle.

Elias had intervened verbally.

The lord’s son ordered him away.

Elias refused.

The lord’s son shoved him.

Elias broke his nose.

Kael looked up.

”You left out the shove.”

Elias sat across from him.

”He shoved badly.”

”That is not what I mean.”

”I know.”

Kael looked back at the document.

”You could have restrained him.”

”Yes.”

”You could have blocked the next strike.”

”Yes.”

”You broke his nose.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Elias thought.

”Because I was angry.”

The honesty stopped Kael.

Darius stood near the bookcase.

No one interrupted.

Elias continued. ”I can make it sound better if you want.”

”I don’t.”

”He was hurting a child. He thought nobody there could stop him because his father owned the stable and half the village depended on the estate.”

Kael listened.

”I told him to stop. He laughed. Then he shoved me.”

Elias looked down at his hands.

”I hit him harder than I needed to.”

Marcus’s amusement disappeared.

Kael asked, ”Do you regret stopping him?”

”No.”

”Breaking his nose?”

Elias hesitated.

”Yes.”

That surprised Kael.

Elias noticed.

”I don’t regret that he got hurt.”

”That sounds contradictory.”

”It probably is.”

He leaned back.

”I regret that I hit him because I wanted to hurt him.”

The room became quiet.

”That is different from hitting him because it was necessary.”

Kael glanced toward Darius.

The commander said nothing.

Good.

Kael wanted Elias’s answer.

”What would you do now?”

”Stop him.”

”How?”

”Depends.”

Kael almost laughed.

Apparently Blackwood’s favorite answer.

Elias continued. ”If I could restrain him, I would. If he kept fighting, I’d use enough force to stop him.”

”And if you became angry?”

”I probably would.”

”Then?”

”Do the job anyway.”

Darius finally spoke.

”Better.”

Elias looked toward him.

”Was that praise?”

”No.”

Kael smiled.

The family resemblance was becoming contagious.

Marcus’s record came next.

The bridge incident was longer.

A provincial supply column had been evacuating ahead of a flood. Marcus, then serving under a military engineer, had been assigned with four others to guard a temporary supply bridge and prevent civilians from interfering with the retreat.

Water rose faster than predicted.

A section of riverside housing collapsed.

Two children became trapped against a tree downstream.

The sergeant commanding the post was struck by debris and lost consciousness.

Marcus left his assigned position.

For eleven minutes.

He pulled both children from the water.

During his absence, no supplies were lost.

No civilians crossed the bridge.

No enemy was present.

He returned and resumed his post.

His commanding officer still punished him.

Two weeks confined duty.

Loss of pay.

Formal notation.

Kael looked toward Marcus.

”You still think the punishment was fair.”

Marcus nodded.

Elias turned.

”You saved two children.”

”I left a post.”

”The sergeant was unconscious.”

”That made the post more important, not less.”

Elias frowned.

Marcus continued. ”Someone should have been in command.”

”You were.”

”I decided I was.”

Kael became interested.

Marcus looked toward him.

”That is the problem.”

”Explain.”

”I was not the senior man.”

”Who was?”

”Corporal Hessel.”

”What did he do?”

”Held the bridge.”

”So you left because he was there.”

Marcus nodded.

”That matters.”

”Yes.”

Kael read the report again.

”Did your commanding officer know that?”

”Yes.”

”And still punished you.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Marcus looked toward Darius.

Darius answered.

”Because the decision happened to end well.”

Kael understood immediately.

If Marcus had left.

If civilians had rushed the bridge.

If wagons overturned.

If supplies were lost.

If someone died because the position had been weakened.

The same decision would suddenly look less heroic.

Darius continued. ”Military discipline cannot depend entirely on whether chance rewards disobedience.”

Elias folded his arms.

”So Marcus should have watched the children drown?”

”No.”

Darius’s answer came immediately.

”Then what should he have done?”

”Make the best decision available and accept that responsibility does not disappear merely because every option is bad.”

Elias frowned.

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the only honest answer.”

Kael looked between them.

There was something here that connected to the Church’s question.

A knight owed people consideration.

Aid when duty and judgment permitted.

But sometimes duty and aid collided.

No doctrine could erase the collision.

Marcus looked toward Kael.

”I would leave again.”

The room quieted.

”Same circumstances?”

”Yes.”

”Even knowing the punishment?”

”Yes.”

Darius watched him.

Marcus did not look away.

”I would make sure Hessel knew he held command. I did not do that clearly enough the first time.”

That changed something.

Not the decision.

The execution.

Kael nodded slowly.

”So your answer isn’t that the punishment was wrong.”

”No.”

”Or that leaving was right.”

Marcus considered.

”I think saving them was right.”

”And leaving?”

”I think leaving was necessary to do it.”

He paused.

”That does not make the abandoned duty disappear.”

Kael smiled faintly.

Malrec was going to enjoy Marcus.

Or hate him.

Possibly both.

By midday, Kael had stopped thinking of the upcoming interviews as a Church formality.

Malrec was not coming to verify that Elias and Marcus could fight.

The Knight Examination had already done that.

He was coming to decide what their mistakes meant.

That was more difficult.

Numbers would have been easier.

The Guild headquarters provided a welcome interruption.

Kael walked there with Galahad after lunch to inspect the nearly completed interior.

Most of the main hall had been finished.

The registration counters were fitted.

The stair rails were in place.

The map room upstairs had shelves.

The training yard outside still needed one section of drainage corrected where rainwater collected near the southern wall.

Kael stopped there.

Galahad saw him looking.

”No.”

Kael turned.

”I didn’t say anything.”

”I know.”

”You can’t keep doing that.”

”We already have someone fixing it.”

Kael stared at the shallow pool.

”Who?”

”Mason crew. Tomorrow.”

Kael forced himself to walk away.

Galahad smiled.

Inside, carpenters were installing the final partition near the contract records.

A familiar voice came from above them.

”This is unnecessary.”

Kael looked up.

Milo Renwick stood on the second-floor gallery staring down at two workers trying to lift a heavy cabinet up the stairs.

Galahad sighed.

”Milo.”

”What?”

”You volunteered.”

”I volunteered to help.”

”Yes.”

”This is helping.”

”You have done nothing.”

Milo looked toward the cabinet.

Then toward the stairs.

Then lifted one hand.

The air changed.

Not dramatically.

Kael felt pressure shift against his skin.

The cabinet rose six inches.

One carpenter swore.

The other nearly dropped his end before realizing he no longer carried most of the weight.

Milo moved two fingers.

The cabinet drifted upward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The men guided it around the stair turn while Milo remained leaning against the railing.

Kael watched.

The spell did not look powerful.

That made it more impressive.

There was no violent gust.

No dramatic flash.

No obvious strain.

Only controlled pressure applied exactly where necessary.

The cabinet settled onto the second floor.

Milo lowered his hand.

”There.”

Galahad looked toward the stairs.

”You could have done that ten minutes ago.”

”I was hoping they would solve it themselves.”

One carpenter shouted from above, ”We were solving it!”

Milo called back, ”Slowly!”

Kael laughed.

Milo looked down.

”Your Highness.”

Kael nodded.

”Milo.”

Galahad looked between them.

”You’ve spoken now?”

”Yes.”

Milo pointed toward Kael. ”He was almost normal.”

”Thank you.”

”That wasn’t entirely praise.”

Kael sighed.

Another Black Dragon soldier stood farther down the gallery near an open window.

Kael had noticed her before only because she was restringing a longbow almost as tall as she was.

Dark hair was tied back tightly behind her head. Her uniform lacked unnecessary decoration, and a leather guard covered most of her left forearm. A quiver rested against the wall beside her.

She inspected the bowstring.

Then drew.

No arrow.

Just testing tension.

The wood bent deeply.

Kael stopped walking.

Galahad followed his gaze.

”Do not.”

Kael looked at him.

”What?”

”You’re doing it again.”

”I don’t even know her name.”

”That is different.”

Kael turned toward Darius.

Darius was not there.

Kael smiled.

”Good.”

Galahad sighed.

The woman released the string carefully and looked toward them.

Her eyes moved from Galahad to Kael.

”Your Highness.”

Kael nodded.

”You’re one of the original fifty.”

”Yes.”

He waited.

She waited.

Kael realized she was not going to rescue him.

”What is your name?”

”Sera Venn.”

Simple.

No famous House attached.

No elaborate title.

Kael nodded toward the bow.

”You’re an archer.”

Her expression changed slightly.

Milo called from the other end of the gallery.

”He did it!”

Kael closed his eyes.

Galahad laughed.

Sera looked toward Milo.

”Did what?”

”Turned you into a job.”

Kael pointed upward.

”I dislike you.”

Milo smiled.

Sera looked back toward Kael.

”I am an archer.”

Kael opened his eyes.

That did not help.

She added, ”Among other things.”

Better.

Kael leaned against the lower railing.

”What other things?”

”Depends what needs doing.”

Milo called again.

”She can also glare accurately from very far away.”

Sera picked up one of the blunt practice arrows beside her without looking.

Milo immediately ducked behind the railing.

Kael laughed.

Galahad shook his head.

Sera set the arrow back down.

”Coward.”

Milo’s voice came from behind the wood.

”Survivor.”

Kael liked both of them already.

That probably meant Darius would tell him not to interfere.

He decided to leave before proving him right.

The interruption did what Kael needed.

For almost an hour, he thought about the Guild instead of the Church.

Then Edwin found him.

Again.

Kael saw the old steward approaching across the Guild floor.

”Please tell me nobody else sent a letter.”

”No.”

Kael relaxed.

”Archdeacon Malrec’s advance party arrived.”

Kael’s relief disappeared.

”Today?”

”Two attendants and a Church clerk. Malrec himself remains due in two days.”

Galahad looked toward Edwin.

”Why send them early?”

”To inspect accommodations, confirm records, and prepare his schedule.”

Kael frowned.

”We have guest rooms.”

”They are aware.”

”Then why inspect?”

Edwin gave him the look normally reserved for questions Kael should have answered himself.

”Because they are the Imperial Church.”

Milo leaned over the gallery.

”That explains everything.”

Sera threw the blunt arrow.

Milo disappeared.

The arrow struck the railing exactly where his hand had been.

Kael looked up.

Then at Sera.

She calmly returned to her bow.

Galahad followed Kael’s gaze.

”No.”

Kael smiled.

”I said nothing.”

By late afternoon, the Church clerk had transformed one of Blackwood’s administrative rooms into something resembling a temporary archive.

His name was Brother Caelen Orst.

He was not a priest.

Kael had asked.

The man had corrected him politely enough that Kael suspected he corrected princes regularly.

”I am a sworn clerk in service to the western ecclesiastical circuit, Your Highness.”

Kael looked at the three large document cases he had brought.

”And you need all of those for two candidates?”

”One contains your records.”

Kael stopped.

”My records?”

”House Kael’s.”

”That is not the same thing.”

”Legally, no.”

Kael disliked how quickly the man answered.

Brother Caelen was perhaps thirty-five, narrow-faced, clean-shaven, and wore dark gray rather than ceremonial white. He arranged documents with the precision of someone who believed paper had moral character.

Marcus and Elias sat nearby.

Neither looked comfortable.

Kael decided that helped.

Brother Caelen opened a ledger.

”Archdeacon Malrec will conduct separate interviews.”

Elias frowned.

”Separate?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”To hear separate answers.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

Elias looked toward him.

”Stop enjoying this.”

”I am not the one who punched nobility.”

”You left a bridge.”

Brother Caelen looked up.

Kael covered his face.

The clerk’s expression remained perfectly neutral.

”I have read both records.”

That silenced them.

Kael looked toward him.

”What exactly happens after the interviews?”

”If the Archdeacon finds no cause to delay recognition, he signs the ecclesiastical recommendation.”

”Then Solmara?”

”Yes.”

Brother Caelen’s tone changed slightly when he said the name.

Not reverence exactly.

Familiarity.

Kael noticed.

”Have you lived there?”

”Eleven years.”

”Where?”

”Orinth.”

Kael recognized the city from the map.

”The Church’s central seat.”

”One of its principal seats.”

Kael stopped.

”One?”

Brother Caelen looked at him.

”You thought Solmara had one important city?”

Kael felt Edwin somewhere behind him enjoying this.

”I thought Orinth was the center.”

”It is.”

”That sounded contradictory.”

”It is the center of central ecclesiastical administration.”

Kael waited.

Brother Caelen continued. ”That does not mean every important Church institution is located there.”

Of course it did not.

Kael leaned back.

”What else?”

Brother Caelen glanced toward the documents.

Then apparently decided this was still relevant.

”The great knightly archives are maintained within Orinth’s old ecclesiastical quarter. Several major seminaries lie farther north. The western healing colleges are concentrated near the river districts. The principal pilgrimage roads divide before reaching the city. Some monastic orders maintain their own estates and schools elsewhere in Solmara.”

Kael listened.

”Who governs the towns?”

”Depends upon the town.”

There it was again.

Brother Caelen continued. ”Some are administered directly by ecclesiastical officials. Some retain civic councils under old charters. Some estates are managed by religious orders. Certain communities possess lay magistrates appointed under Church authority.”

Kael smiled.

Brother Caelen stopped.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You are smiling.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius had entered without him noticing.

The commander said, ”He discovered complexity.”

Brother Caelen looked confused.

Marcus laughed.

Kael ignored all of them.

Solmara was already becoming more interesting.

Not because it was strange.

Because it was not simple.

The Church governed a territory containing institutions older than House Kael, overlapping authorities, civic traditions, religious orders, knightly archives, farms, roads, and people who probably complained about taxes just as much as Walter did.

Kael wanted to see it.

That realization came with enough force that he immediately distrusted it.

He had work in Blackwood.

The Guild was nearly complete.

Housing pressure continued.

Hadran’s legal review remained unfinished.

Victor was somewhere on the eastern road toward Greywatch.

Damien would leave soon enough.

Traveling north for a ceremony could not become an excuse to abandon his own territory because something new interested him.

Brother Caelen closed the ledger.

”One more matter.”

Kael focused.

”The Archdeacon has requested that neither candidate be coached before interview.”

Elias looked offended.

”I am not a child.”

”No one said you were.”

Marcus smiled.

Brother Caelen continued. ”He wants your answers, not Darius Valen’s.”

Darius’s expression did not change.

Kael’s did.

Brother Caelen looked toward him.

”Or yours, Your Highness.”

Kael leaned back.

”I wasn’t planning to coach them.”

Elias looked at him.

Marcus looked at him.

Darius looked at him.

Kael frowned.

”I wasn’t.”

Brother Caelen calmly made a note.

Kael stared.

”What did you write?”

”Nothing relevant.”

”That means it was relevant.”

”It means I am a clerk.”

Kael decided he disliked Church clerks.

By evening, the advance party had settled into the manor’s eastern guest rooms.

Elias and Marcus had been ordered by everyone except Kael to stop discussing possible interview questions.

Kael found them outside anyway.

The two men stood along the upper wall overlooking Blackwood as evening settled over the territory.

Kael joined them.

Marcus looked toward him.

”If you’re here to prepare us—”

”Apparently I am forbidden.”

Elias smiled.

”Good.”

Kael leaned against the stone.

For several moments, none spoke.

Below them, lights appeared around the Guild headquarters.

The building looked nearly finished from this distance.

Beyond it, the settlement stretched farther than it had when Kael first returned.

More roofs.

More lamps.

More smoke from evening fires.

More people.

Kael wondered how many of them knew two men from Blackwood might soon have their names written among Imperial knights in Solmara.

Probably most.

Blackwood was terrible at secrets.

Elias looked toward the northern horizon.

”Have you ever been there?”

”No.”

”Marcus?”

”No.”

Kael looked toward Elias.

”Nervous?”

”Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

Marcus nodded.

”Me too.”

Kael had expected at least one of them to pretend otherwise.

Neither did.

”What part?”

Elias thought.

”The examination was easier.”

Kael laughed softly.

”You lost.”

”I still knew what I was supposed to do.”

That made sense.

”Fight well. Follow instructions. Show control. Make decisions.”

He looked toward the darkening north.

”With Malrec, I don’t know what answer he wants.”

Kael almost told him that was the point.

He stopped.

No coaching.

Marcus noticed the pause.

”You had something.”

”Yes.”

”Can’t say it?”

”Apparently.”

Elias smiled.

”That may be the first useful Church rule.”

Kael ignored him.

Marcus looked toward Blackwood.

”I don’t think I’m worried about the answer.”

”What then?”

”What happens if he says no.”

That was different.

Kael turned toward him.

Marcus continued. ”People already know we passed.”

”Yes.”

”Blackwood expects this.”

”Yes.”

”If Malrec decides one of us is not ready, everyone will know.”

Elias became quieter.

Kael understood now.

The ceremony had become public before either man possessed the title.

Pride had arrived early.

So had expectation.

”You’ll still have passed the examination,” Kael said.

Marcus nodded.

”That is not the same.”

”No.”

Kael thought about Victor.

Winning.

Identity.

What happens when nobody is impressed by you?

Maybe Marcus and Elias had their own version.

What happens when people are impressed before the institution finishes judging you?

Kael looked toward both men.

”I can’t tell you what to say to Malrec.”

Elias nodded.

”But I can tell you something that has nothing to do with the interview.”

They waited.

”If he delays you, Blackwood does not collapse.”

Marcus frowned slightly.

”You think that’s what I’m worried about?”

”Partly.”

Kael continued. ”You both already matter here.”

Neither spoke.

”The title will change how strangers see you. It will change legal standing. It will carry trust. We spent an entire day discussing why that matters.”

Elias looked down.

”But if the Church tells you that you need another year before your names go into that book, you do not become less useful to Blackwood tomorrow morning.”

Marcus looked toward him.

”That sounds like something you should tell Victor.”

”I did something similar.”

”How did he take it?”

”He complained.”

Elias smiled.

Kael continued. ”I want you both recognized.”

That mattered to say plainly.

”You earned the chance.”

He looked toward Marcus.

”But do not go into that interview trying to protect the version of yourselves everyone has already started celebrating.”

The words surprised even him.

Elias looked toward him.

Kael shrugged.

”Apparently I’m allowed to say that because it isn’t coaching.”

Marcus laughed quietly.

”I’ll ask the clerk.”

”Don’t.”

They stood together until the last light disappeared.

The Archdeacon would arrive in two days.

After that came interviews.

Judgment.

Possibly Solmara.

Possibly delay.

Kael could not control all of it.

That realization no longer felt as unbearable as it once would have.

Below them, Blackwood continued working.

Behind them, the manor held Church records waiting to be examined.

Far north, beyond the Imperial Province of Aurelia and across the Arven River, Solmara waited whether House Kael reached it in eleven days or eleven months.

Kael looked once toward the dark horizon.

For the first time, the Empire’s map felt less like a collection of names.

It felt like places.

And soon, perhaps, he would finally begin seeing how different those places could be.
