The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Kael learned before sunrise that Varenford had two different definitions of morning.

The first belonged to ordinary people.

That morning began when light appeared.

The second belonged to anyone whose livelihood depended upon roads.

That morning began whenever somebody decided a wagon needed to leave.

Kael discovered the distinction when he stepped into the courtyard of the Church travelers’ house and found the place already crowded.

Stable workers moved between horses carrying feed and tack. A merchant was arguing over a cracked wheel by lantern light. Two wagons waited at the outer gate. Someone in the kitchen had been baking long enough that fresh bread already filled the lower corridor with warmth.

The eastern sky was barely gray.

Kael stopped beside the stairs.

”You people are insane.”

Brother Caelen walked past carrying a document case.

”You are awake too.”

”Under protest.”

”You are a prince. Protest officially.”

Kael stared after him.

Solmara had produced entirely too many difficult people.

Darius emerged from the stable already wearing his sword.

Of course.

Kael looked at him.

”You slept?”

”Yes.”

”When?”

”During the night.”

”That sounds suspicious.”

Darius ignored him.

Across the courtyard, Elias was fastening a travel bag behind his saddle while Marcus checked the straps on both sides.

Malrec appeared several minutes later carrying the same book he had been reading the previous day.

Kael pointed at it.

”You brought that outside?”

”I intend to read in the carriage.”

”The road is going to shake.”

”Yes.”

”That doesn’t bother you?”

”No.”

Kael frowned.

Malrec studied him.

”Do roads prevent you from thinking?”

”No.”

”Then why should they prevent me from reading?”

”That is different.”

”How?”

Kael had no answer.

Malrec entered the carriage.

Darius mounted.

Kael decided the day had started badly.

They left Varenford beneath a sky the color of wet stone.

The northern road followed the river for several miles before gradually pulling away through farmland. Morning mist sat low over harvested fields, hiding the lower portions of stone fences and turning distant barns into dark shapes without foundations.

Traffic was lighter than the previous afternoon.

For approximately an hour.

Then the sun rose.

The road filled.

Kael saw wagons carrying grain south.

Timber moving east.

Three carriages traveling toward Aurelia.

A group of pilgrims walking north.

Two mounted messengers overtook everyone at different points, each wearing the small brass insignia of the Imperial courier service.

A livestock herd forced the Church carriage almost to a stop near a narrow bridge.

Kael expected Darius to become irritated.

He did not.

The cows had no respect for the Empire.

Kael appreciated that.

Elias rode beside him while they waited for the herd to clear.

”Do you think they know where they’re going?”

”The cows?”

”Yes.”

”No.”

”They look confident.”

”That means nothing.”

One cow stopped directly in front of Malrec’s carriage.

It stared through the open window.

Malrec looked back.

Neither moved.

Elias smiled.

”Who wins?”

”The cow.”

”How do you know?”

”It has less to lose.”

The cow eventually continued.

Malrec returned to his book.

Kael looked toward Elias.

”Definitely the cow.”

By midmorning the farmland began changing.

Fields grew larger.

The number of small family holdings decreased.

Kael started seeing long boundary walls surrounding estates too large to understand from the road.

Some belonged to nobles.

Others displayed Imperial lease markers.

One enormous property bore the symbol of a religious order Kael did not recognize.

He looked toward Brother Caelen, who rode beside the carriage today rather than sitting inside.

”That belongs to the Church?”

Caelen followed his gaze.

”The Order of Saint Veran.”

”In the Imperial Province?”

”Yes.”

”How large?”

”I don’t know.”

Kael looked genuinely surprised.

Brother Caelen frowned.

”What?”

”I thought Church clerks knew everything.”

”We know where the documents are.”

”That is less impressive.”

”It is more useful.”

Kael looked toward the distant estate.

”Farms?”

”Mostly grain. Some sheep. There is also a small hospice farther north on the property.”

”Who works the land?”

”Tenants, hired laborers, members of the order, depending upon the section.”

”Taxes?”

Brother Caelen sighed.

”Ask the provincial revenue office.”

Kael smiled.

”I might.”

”You are not going there.”

”I said might.”

”You said it in the tone that means you intend to remember it.”

Darius spoke from Kael’s other side.

”He does.”

Kael frowned.

”This entire journey is becoming hostile.”

Brother Caelen slowed his horse until he rode beside the Church guards instead.

Kael watched him go.

”Coward.”

Darius said, ”Efficient.”

The road continued northeast.

Shortly before midday, traffic stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

The Church carriage halted first.

Kael’s horse nearly continued past it before he pulled the reins.

Ahead, wagons filled both sides of the road.

Drivers had dismounted.

People stood looking toward a junction perhaps half a mile away where several mounted officials moved between the halted lines.

Kael immediately straightened.

Darius saw it.

”No.”

”We don’t even know what happened.”

”Exactly.”

”That is why we should find out.”

”Find out. Do not take command.”

Kael looked offended.

”I know the difference.”

Darius said nothing.

”That silence was insulting.”

Malrec opened the carriage door.

”What happened?”

Kael looked toward him.

”I don’t know.”

”Good.”

Kael stared.

”How is ignorance good?”

”You haven’t had time to interfere.”

Darius looked away.

Kael decided both men were enjoying themselves.

Jessa rode forward to investigate.

That was her actual job.

Kael waited.

This was becoming an exercise.

Five minutes.

Then seven.

Kael looked at Darius.

Darius continued watching the road.

Ten minutes.

Kael sighed.

”You could have sent someone faster.”

”We sent someone competent.”

”That wasn’t the same statement.”

”No.”

Jessa returned before Kael could complain further.

”Wagon accident at the junction.”

”Anyone injured?”

”No serious injuries.”

Kael relaxed.

”What happened?”

”Freight wagon broke its front axle while turning onto the northern road. Another wagon tried to go around it and lost a wheel in the drainage ditch.”

Elias frowned.

”So two wagons are blocking three roads.”

”Yes.”

”Efficient.”

Jessa almost smiled.

”Local road marshal has crews clearing it.”

Kael looked ahead.

”How long?”

”Twenty to thirty minutes.”

”Can we bypass?”

”Yes.”

That interested him.

”Then why isn’t everyone?”

”Because the bypass goes through private estate roads and requires authorization.”

Kael’s expression changed.

”Who authorizes it?”

”The road marshal has authority during major obstruction.”

”So?”

”He’s opening it for light traffic first.”

Kael looked toward Malrec.

The Archdeacon had already returned to his carriage.

Darius said, ”Sit.”

”I am on a horse.”

”Then remain.”

Kael sighed.

He remained.

The road marshal did exactly what Jessa had described.

Within several minutes, mounted travelers and small carriages began moving away from the main road toward a narrower side route between two large estates.

Heavy freight stayed.

The Church delegation was waved forward.

Kael rode past the accident slowly.

The broken wagon leaned at an angle near the center of the junction.

Grain sacks had spilled across the road.

Laborers dragged them away while another crew raised the damaged axle using blocks and long wooden levers.

The second wagon looked worse.

One side sat nearly inside the ditch.

Its driver stood beside an official holding a wax tablet and complaining loudly.

Kael caught part of it.

”I was told north was clear!”

”It was clear before he broke an axle!”

”That isn’t my problem!”

”It became your problem when you drove around him!”

Kael smiled.

The road marshal noticed him.

His expression changed immediately.

Kael saw the moment recognition happened.

The man straightened.

”Your Highness.”

Kael nodded.

”Marshal.”

”Apologies for the delay.”

”No apology needed.”

That seemed to surprise him.

Kael looked toward the side road.

”You can authorize estate roads for emergency traffic?”

”Under obstruction authority, yes.”

”Do the estates get compensated?”

The marshal blinked.

Darius looked at Kael.

Kael ignored him.

”Sometimes.”

”Who pays?”

”Depends upon damage.”

There it was.

Kael smiled.

The marshal became increasingly uncertain.

”If we’re only sending horses and light carriages through, probably nobody. If heavy wagons damage private roads or fields, claims go through district administration.”

Kael nodded.

”What happens if an estate refuses access?”

”During emergency road authority?”

”Yes.”

The marshal hesitated.

”They can complain afterward.”

Kael liked that answer.

Not because it was powerful.

Because the system had apparently decided temporary movement mattered enough that certain property disputes happened after the road was reopened.

He looked toward the broken wagon.

”How often does this happen?”

”Accidents?”

”At the junction.”

”Too often.”

”Why?”

The marshal looked at the turn.

”Northbound freight comes from the western road too fast. Turn is tighter than it looks.”

Kael followed his gaze.

There was indeed a shallow downhill slope before the junction.

Heavy wagons would carry momentum directly into the turn.

”Then why not change it?”

The marshal smiled without humor.

”You want the short answer or the Imperial answer?”

Kael immediately liked him.

”Imperial.”

”The land on the western corner belongs to House Velor. The drainage channel on the eastern side is part of an older provincial water agreement. Widening north means moving a road marker protected under a district boundary order. We requested redesign three years ago.”

Kael stared.

”And?”

”Approved last year.”

”That is good.”

”Funding was moved to a bridge repair after spring flooding.”

Kael stopped.

The marshal shrugged.

”Bridge mattered more.”

Kael looked toward the broken wagons.

Probably true.

Not satisfying.

True.

”When does this get funded again?”

”Next road cycle, unless something else breaks first.”

Kael almost laughed.

Darius finally spoke.

”Kael.”

”Yes.”

”We are blocking the bypass.”

Kael looked behind him.

Several riders waited.

Right.

He nodded to the marshal.

”Thank you.”

”Your Highness.”

Kael moved on.

Once they reached the side road, Elias rode beside him.

”You wanted to fix it.”

”Yes.”

”What would you have done?”

Kael looked back toward the junction.

”At first?”

”Yes.”

”Widened the turn.”

”And now?”

”Checked land authority, drainage agreement, boundary order, accident records, cost, freight volume, alternative engineering options, bridge priorities—”

Elias laughed.

Kael frowned.

”What?”

”That is considerably less satisfying.”

”Yes.”

Marcus rode up on the other side.

”Welcome to administration.”

Kael stared at him.

”You are not even a knight yet.”

”Tomorrow’s problem.”

The estate road was narrower but well maintained.

Ornamental trees lined one section.

Then fields returned.

Kael noticed that the road marshal had stationed workers at both ends to prevent heavy wagons from attempting the bypass.

Temporary authority.

Temporary route.

Temporary rules.

And, somewhere later, probably complaints.

By the time the party rejoined the northern Imperial road, Kael understood why administrators became tired.

They stopped for lunch beside a roadside station rather than entering another town.

The station consisted of a well, covered tables, a stable shelter, a courier box, and a small office maintained by the Imperial road authority.

No inn.

Travelers brought their own food.

Milo would have hated it.

Kael smiled at the thought.

Elias noticed.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You’ve been alone with yourself too long.”

”That was unnecessarily personal.”

Marcus sat on the grass beside them and unwrapped bread and dried meat.

Malrec remained closer to the carriage.

For once, his book was closed.

Kael looked toward Elias.

”Tomorrow we reach the river.”

Elias stopped chewing.

Marcus smiled.

”Thank you for reminding him.”

”I know.”

Elias looked north.

”I was doing well.”

Kael leaned back against one elbow.

”Nervous about Solmara or the ceremony?”

”Yes.”

”That was not the question.”

”That was the answer.”

Fair.

Marcus looked toward the northern road.

”I’m more curious now.”

”About?”

”The book.”

Elias glanced at him.

”You’re thinking about the book?”

”The record.”

”Yes.”

Marcus shrugged.

”I know what the oath means now. At least more than before.”

”That confidence is dangerous.”

”I didn’t say I understand everything.”

”Good.”

Marcus continued. ”But I keep thinking about the names already there.”

Kael understood.

Generations.

Knights who served emperors long dead.

Knights who defended villages nobody remembered.

Good men.

Bad men.

Famous names.

Forgotten names.

All preserved because some institution had decided the record mattered.

Elias said, ”What if nobody ever reads ours again?”

Marcus looked at him.

”Then why write it?”

Kael answered before thinking.

”Because whether someone reads it later isn’t the only reason to record something now.”

Both men looked toward him.

Kael continued.

”The record tells the institution that the title was granted deliberately.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

Elias looked less convinced.

Kael shrugged.

”Also, maybe in two hundred years some annoying prince researches why your bridge incident was allowed into the registry.”

Marcus laughed.

Elias pointed at Kael.

”Assuming they can find it under all the paperwork you create.”

Malrec’s voice carried from behind them.

”The central knightly records are organized.”

Kael turned.

The Archdeacon stood several paces away.

”How organized?”

Malrec immediately looked suspicious.

”I regret speaking.”

Kael smiled.

”By year?”

”Partly.”

”House?”

”Partly.”

”Territory?”

”Partly.”

”Type of service?”

”No.”

”Why?”

Malrec stared at him.

Kael realized what he had done.

”Sorry.”

Elias laughed.

Malrec sat on the opposite side of the table.

Kael took advantage before the Archdeacon could leave.

”Why does the Church keep the central record?”

”That is a larger question than you think.”

”Good.”

Malrec sighed.

”The short answer is continuity.”

”Between what?”

”Crown recognition, ecclesiastical consecration, oath, identity, misconduct, death, and sometimes revocation.”

Kael listened.

”The Church does not create Imperial knighthood by itself.”

”I know.”

”But once a knight has been recognized and consecrated, there should be an enduring record that does not belong only to his House, commander, province, or family.”

Kael became more attentive.

”So if House records disappear—”

”The Church record remains.”

”If the Church record disappears?”

”Other records remain.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”Redundancy.”

Malrec frowned.

”That is an ugly word.”

”It is a useful word.”

”It is both.”

Marcus asked, ”Have records ever been lost?”

”Yes.”

Elias looked surprised.

”Whole books?”

”Yes.”

”Wars?”

”Wars. Fires. Floods. Theft. Neglect.”

Kael looked at Malrec.

”Then why centralize?”

”Because central records are useful.”

”But centralization creates a single point of failure.”

Malrec’s expression changed.

”Which is why the Church maintains regional copies of certain records and Houses maintain their own recognition documents.”

Kael smiled.

Malrec pointed at him.

”Do not.”

”I said nothing.”

”You became happy.”

Darius sat down beside them.

”That usually means infrastructure or redundancy.”

Kael stared.

”I have other interests.”

Nobody answered.

Kael took personal offense.

They resumed travel shortly afterward.

The afternoon road changed as Rellin Cross drew nearer.

Traffic no longer moved primarily north or south.

More wagons joined from smaller roads.

Then from a broad southeastern route carrying goods from deeper within the Imperial Province.

Roadside warehouses appeared before the town itself.

Temporary livestock pens stood beside several fields.

Large boards displayed market prices for grain, wool, timber, salt, iron fittings, and preserved foods.

Kael slowed near one.

Darius sighed.

”I am reading while moving.”

”That is worse.”

”It is possible.”

”You are on a horse.”

Kael continued anyway.

The posted prices were dated.

Some showed previous weeks beside current values.

Kael became interested.

Information.

Not merely buying and selling.

Farmers approaching Rellin Cross could see whether grain prices had risen before entering the market.

Merchants could compare prices across periods.

Whether those numbers were accurate was another question.

Kael looked toward the next board.

A notice had been nailed across one corner.

Northern wool shipments delayed. Revised arrival estimates available at Hall Three.

Another:

Bridge repair east of Merrow Road. Heavy freight redirected until further notice.

Another:

False coin reports under investigation. Merchants advised to inspect silver marks.

The town was communicating before Kael even entered it.

Then he saw something else.

A handwritten notice pasted crookedly below the official postings.

BLACKWOOD PRINCE SUMMONED NORTH BY CHURCH

Kael stopped his horse.

Darius continued three steps before realizing.

He turned.

Kael pointed.

Darius read.

His face did not change.

Elias rode up.

”What?”

Kael pointed again.

Elias read.

Then looked toward Malrec’s carriage.

”Summoned?”

Marcus joined them.

Kael dismounted.

Darius immediately said, ”Why?”

”To read it.”

”You can read from the horse.”

”I want the rest.”

There was indeed more.

Smaller writing beneath the headline read:

Reports from southern roads claim Prince Kael of Blackwood travels under escort toward Solmara following Church concern over the rapid expansion of his military household and disputed knightly recognitions. Two Blackwood fighters are believed to be involved.

Kael stared.

Elias stepped closer.

”Disputed?”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

Kael kept reading.

Unconfirmed accounts suggest the Church may require direct review before granting full recognition. Other travelers report the Prince travels voluntarily to attend a ceremony.

At least the final sentence approached reality.

Barely.

Elias looked toward Kael.

”Who wrote this?”

There was no signature.

Only the mark of a small traveling news-sheet seller from Rellin Cross.

Darius looked toward the town ahead.

”Probably someone who heard pieces.”

Kael frowned.

”Pieces of what?”

”You are traveling north.”

”Yes.”

”With Malrec.”

”Yes.”

”Two candidates.”

”Yes.”

”The Guild and Black Dragon are growing.”

”Yes.”

”The Church required central consecration.”

Kael stared at the notice.

Put together badly, the facts produced something completely different.

Marcus said quietly, ”They think we were rejected.”

”Somebody thinks you were disputed,” Elias corrected.

”That is not better.”

Kael’s first instinct was immediate.

Find the seller.

Correct the notice.

Have an official statement posted.

Then another thought arrived.

How many people had already read it?

How many had repeated it differently?

How many had carried it south?

West?

East?

Kael looked toward Darius.

”What do we do?”

Darius seemed slightly surprised by the question.

Kael noticed.

”What?”

”You asked before acting.”

”I do that.”

”Sometimes.”

Kael frowned.

Darius dismounted and read the notice again.

”Is it causing harm?”

”It is false.”

”That was not my question.”

Kael looked at him.

Elias answered.

”It makes it sound like we’re under Church investigation.”

”You are under Church review.”

”That isn’t the same thing.”

”No.”

Marcus looked toward the road traffic.

”It could become political.”

Kael nodded.

That was the real danger.

A prince building a growing military household.

The Imperial Church supposedly concerned.

Two questionable knights.

That could become something uglier by the time it reached Aurelia.

Or Seraphine.

Or any noble already inclined to distrust Blackwood.

Malrec’s carriage stopped behind them.

The Archdeacon stepped out.

He saw the paper.

Read it.

Then said, ”Mild.”

Kael stared.

”Mild?”

”I have read worse about myself.”

”That does not make this good.”

”No.”

”Should we correct it?”

Malrec looked toward him.

”Which part?”

”All of it.”

”The first statement is false.”

”Yes.”

”The second paragraph mixes fact and assumption.”

”Yes.”

”The third includes the accurate possibility.”

Kael frowned.

”So?”

”So correction should be specific.”

Kael looked at him.

Malrec continued. ”If the Church posts a declaration denying every rumor surrounding every journey, we will spend more time answering gossip than governing.”

Darius nodded.

Kael understood the principle.

He did not like it.

Elias looked at the notice.

”But people will think we did something wrong.”

Malrec turned toward him.

”Some will.”

”And we just accept that?”

”No.”

”Then?”

”You decide whether the falsehood is important enough to answer formally.”

Elias looked toward Kael.

Kael hated how quickly the decision had become his.

He reread the notice.

The dangerous claim was not that the Church was reviewing Elias and Marcus.

That was true.

The dangerous claim was that Kael had been summoned north because the Church was concerned about Blackwood’s military expansion and disputed recognitions.

That created a conflict that did not exist.

At least not yet.

Kael looked toward Brother Caelen.

”What notice did Solmara receive?”

The clerk answered from horseback.

”Official travel notice stating you accompany House Kael candidates for consecration.”

”So Church officials know.”

”Yes.”

”Does the Imperial Province?”

”The relevant travel office received notice.”

Kael nodded.

Then the rumor did not need a grand response.

Not yet.

”Find whoever maintains this board.”

Darius looked toward him.

”To remove it?”

”No.”

That surprised everyone slightly.

Kael pointed to the notice.

”Add a correction beneath it.”

Malrec raised an eyebrow.

Kael continued.

”Short.”

He looked at Brother Caelen.

”Something like: Prince Kael travels voluntarily with the Imperial Church delegation to attend the scheduled consecration of Elias Thorn and Marcus Wintermere following completion of required review. No Church summons concerning Blackwood military expansion has been issued.”

Caelen considered.

”That is accurate.”

”Would the Church sign it?”

Malrec answered.

”Yes.”

Elias looked relieved.

Kael added, ”Do not accuse the news-sheet of lying.”

Darius nodded.

”Good.”

Marcus looked toward him.

”Why?”

”Because we don’t know whether they lied.”

Kael looked at the notice.

”They may have reported what someone told them.”

Malrec studied him.

Kael noticed.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”That usually means something.”

”You are learning to distinguish correction from retaliation.”

Kael frowned.

”That sounded like praise.”

”It was an observation.”

Darius smiled faintly.

Kael saw it.

”I hate both of you.”

They entered Rellin Cross shortly afterward.

The town deserved its name.

Three major roads met near its center.

One ran south toward Aurelia.

One turned west toward Varenford and the western Imperial districts.

The northern road continued toward the Arven River and Solmara.

The roads were broad enough near the center that multiple wagon lines moved simultaneously beneath the direction of traffic wardens.

Markets filled the spaces between them.

Not one market.

Several.

Grain.

Animals.

Tools.

Textiles.

Imported goods.

Travel supplies.

Wagon repairs.

Courier offices.

Money changers.

Kael saw three different inns within the first block.

Then four more.

Rellin Cross did not simply exist beside the roads.

The roads were the reason it existed.

And information moved through it with the goods.

That became clear almost immediately.

A stable worker recognized Kael.

Then glanced toward Malrec.

Then toward Elias and Marcus.

The man’s expression changed.

Kael could almost see the rumor connecting itself.

By the time they reached the Church lodging house, two people near the gate were whispering.

Elias heard.

His jaw tightened.

Kael said quietly, ”Leave it.”

Elias looked toward him.

”They’re saying we were summoned.”

”I know.”

”You’re fine with that?”

”No.”

Kael dismounted.

”But chasing two strangers through a market will not improve it.”

Elias exhaled.

”Right.”

Malrec heard.

He said nothing.

That somehow felt more approving than ”good.”

Their lodging in Rellin Cross was larger than Varenford’s travelers’ house.

It needed to be.

Pilgrims heading north shared the building with merchants, Church officials, students traveling toward Solmaran schools, and ordinary families using the road.

Kael had barely entered the courtyard when a local Church administrator approached Malrec.

”Archdeacon.”

”Prior Hest.”

The man bowed.

Then looked toward Kael.

”Your Highness.”

Kael nodded.

Prior Hest’s eyes moved briefly toward Elias and Marcus.

There it was again.

Kael wondered what version he had heard.

Malrec apparently wondered too.

”Before we begin,” the Archdeacon said, ”Prince Kael was not summoned to Solmara.”

Prior Hest blinked.

Kael almost laughed.

Malrec continued.

”He accompanies two approved candidates for scheduled consecration.”

The Prior’s face changed.

”I had heard—”

”I know.”

Malrec handed Brother Caelen the news notice Kael had removed from the road board after arranging the correction.

”Post the clarification.”

Caelen nodded.

Prior Hest looked embarrassed.

”Of course.”

Kael became interested.

”What did you hear?”

Darius looked toward him.

Kael raised one hand.

”Useful question.”

Prior Hest hesitated.

”That the Church requested your presence following concern regarding the Black Dragon.”

Elias muttered something.

Kael ignored him.

”From who?”

”A merchant arriving from the south.”

”And where did he hear it?”

”I did not ask.”

There.

Again.

Transferred information.

Transferred certainty.

A merchant heard something.

A Prior heard a merchant.

Someone else would hear a Prior.

By the time the story reached Orinth, perhaps Kael would be marching ten thousand soldiers north to threaten the Church.

Kael looked toward Malrec.

”How quickly does official information move?”

”Depends upon urgency.”

”There it is.”

Prior Hest looked confused.

Malrec ignored Kael.

”Routine Church courier from here to Orinth can arrive tomorrow night if dispatched this evening.”

Kael nodded.

”And rumor?”

Darius answered.

”Whichever direction people travel.”

Faster in some directions.

Slower in others.

Impossible to control.

Kael looked back toward the three roads outside.

Rellin Cross did not only move grain.

It moved stories.

That evening, the correction appeared on the public board.

People read it.

Some shrugged.

Some seemed disappointed.

One man asked whether the original rumor had therefore been entirely invented.

Brother Caelen said no.

Another asked whether the Church had investigated House Kael at all.

Brother Caelen replied that the standard review concerned knightly candidates.

A third somehow concluded that this meant the Church was refusing to discuss a secret investigation.

Kael was standing close enough to hear.

He stared.

Brother Caelen looked toward him.

”Do not.”

”I said nothing.”

”You were going to.”

”Yes.”

”You cannot win against everyone committed to misunderstanding.”

Kael looked toward the man walking away.

”He turned the correction into evidence.”

”Yes.”

”That is infuriating.”

”Yes.”

”What do you do about it?”

”Nothing.”

Kael stared.

Brother Caelen adjusted the papers beneath his arm.

”Unless it becomes important.”

Then he left.

Kael stood beside the notice board for several seconds.

A woman approached.

Read both notices.

Then looked at Kael.

”You’re the prince?”

”Yes.”

”Were you summoned?”

”No.”

She nodded.

”Good.”

Then walked away.

Kael watched her disappear into the market.

That was it.

No grand argument.

No dramatic declaration.

She asked.

He answered.

She continued with her life.

Perhaps most people were less invested in Imperial rumors than Imperial families imagined.

That thought was strangely comforting.

Dinner that night happened in a private room.

Not because Kael requested one.

Because the local Church administration had already reserved it for Malrec’s party.

Malrec complained.

Prior Hest apologized.

Nobody changed the arrangement.

Kael found that amusing.

Elias sat beside Marcus, still bothered by the rumor.

”It will follow us.”

”Probably,” Marcus said.

”That doesn’t bother you?”

”Yes.”

”You don’t look bothered.”

”What should I do?”

”Something.”

Marcus took another bite.

”I am eating.”

Elias stared.

Kael smiled.

Darius sat across from them.

”Marcus is correct.”

Elias looked toward him.

”About eating?”

”About the rumor.”

”That is not helpful.”

Darius placed his cup down.

”You are about to become a knight.”

”Hopefully.”

”Then understand now that people will say things about you that are wrong.”

Elias quieted.

”You will correct what matters.”

”Yes.”

”You will defend yourself when necessary.”

”Yes.”

”You will also learn that your reputation cannot be managed one conversation at a time.”

Kael listened too.

Darius continued.

”If you spend your life chasing every person who misunderstands you, eventually they control where you go.”

That was worth remembering.

Malrec nodded once.

Elias looked toward Kael.

”Does that apply to princes?”

”Unfortunately.”

Kael thought of Aurelia.

The Ball.

Nobles watching.

Stories about Blackwood.

People calling him ambitious as though ambition itself were criminal.

People probably calling him weak somewhere else.

Kael had spent too much time imagining that correct information naturally defeated incorrect information.

It did not.

Sometimes the more interesting story won.

Marcus looked toward the windows.

”Tomorrow we’re in Solmara.”

The room changed.

Elias forgot the rumor for a moment.

Malrec nodded.

”Assuming no road problems.”

Kael looked toward him.

”Saint Ordan Bridge.”

”Yes.”

”How long after the crossing?”

”We stop on the Solmaran side.”

”Town?”

”Settlement.”

”Large?”

”No.”

”Church-controlled?”

”Yes.”

”Directly?”

Malrec looked at him.

”Eat.”

Kael sighed.

After dinner, Kael climbed to the upper gallery overlooking Rellin Cross.

The town remained bright.

Lanterns marked three roads stretching away into darkness.

South toward Aurelia.

West toward Varenford.

North toward the Arven.

Wagons still moved.

So did people.

Kael thought of Adrian’s question from Augustus.

Where does information change before it reaches command?

Rellin Cross was not Adrian’s assignment.

But Kael understood the question better here.

Information changed wherever people touched it.

A road worker reported an accident.

A merchant repeated what he heard.

A clerk shortened a message.

A broker changed uncertainty into confidence.

A commander summarized.

A priest interpreted.

A traveler embellished.

By the time information reached someone important, it might still contain every original fact and somehow tell a completely different story.

Darius joined him.

Kael did not turn.

”Do you ever get tired of appearing behind me?”

”No.”

Kael looked toward the northern road.

”They heard about us before we arrived.”

”Yes.”

”Wrongly.”

”Yes.”

”How do you command an army like that?”

Darius leaned against the railing.

”Carefully.”

Kael waited.

Darius continued.

”Orders change as they move too.”

Kael looked toward him.

”A commander says hold until sunset.”

”Yes.”

”A messenger loses part?”

”Sometimes.”

”Officer interprets?”

”Always.”

Kael frowned.

”Always?”

”Every order requires interpretation when reality reaches it.”

That sounded familiar.

Marcus.

The bridge.

Orders written before reality changed.

Darius looked toward the roads.

”That is why good commanders care about intent.”

Kael listened.

”A soldier who knows only the words of an order becomes useless when circumstances make the words impossible. A soldier who understands what the order was meant to accomplish can adapt.”

Kael thought of Cassian’s Sir Maelin Ors.

The man who asked what an order was trying to accomplish before deciding how to execute it.

”Cassian said something similar.”

”He should.”

”He learned from you?”

”No.”

”Father?”

”Possibly.”

Kael smiled faintly.

Darius continued.

”War makes information worse.”

There was something different in his voice.

Kael noticed.

”How much worse?”

Darius did not answer immediately.

”Enough that men die because someone was wrong three hours ago.”

The humor left Kael.

Darius looked north.

”Enough that scouts report five hundred and commanders prepare for five thousand. Enough that five thousand become fifty thousand by the time frightened civilians repeat it. Enough that retreat looks like collapse and a planned withdrawal becomes panic because one unit never received the message.”

Kael imagined it.

Not a tournament.

Not clean.

Thousands of people making decisions based on incomplete reports.

Darius continued.

”That is why speeches matter less than people think.”

Kael glanced at him.

That surprised him.

Darius looked toward him.

”A speech does not win a war.”

”I know.”

”But sometimes soldiers need one.”

There it was.

Something Kael rarely saw from him.

Not Darius the instructor.

Not Darius the commander reviewing logistics.

Something older.

Kael said nothing.

Darius continued quietly.

”When men know the plan, they follow the plan.”

His eyes remained on the northern road.

”When the plan is gone, when communication has failed, when they are frightened and cannot see what command sees, sometimes all you can give them is a reason not to break.”

Kael felt the weight behind the words.

He wanted to ask when Darius had done that.

What battlefield.

How many soldiers.

How many survived.

He did not.

Not yet.

Darius looked toward him.

”One day you may have to speak to people when you do not know whether what you ask of them will work.”

Kael remained still.

”That sounds like a terrible speech.”

”It is.”

Darius pushed away from the railing.

”That is why you should not waste memorable words when nothing important is at stake.”

Then he walked inside.

Kael stayed.

Below him, someone laughed near an inn.

A wagon entered from the southern road.

Two riders departed west.

The false notice about Kael had probably already left town in somebody’s memory.

He could not chase it.

Tomorrow they would cross the Arven River.

The Imperial Province of Aurelia would end behind them.

Solmara would begin.

And for the first time since leaving Blackwood, Kael thought less about what the new territory might teach him than about what stories might already be waiting there when he arrived.
