The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Elias Thorn and Edric Vale did not speak to each other for most of the afternoon.

That was unusual.

Not because they were friends.

They were not.

Not exactly.

But weeks of training in Blackwood had created a strange familiarity between everyone who had survived Sir Darius Valen’s lessons, Sir Maelin Ors’s traps, Registrar Elric Dane’s paperwork, and enough humiliating exercises to make ordinary conversation easier.

Elias and Edric had sparred before.

Shared meals.

Argued about orders.

Watched Victor Ravenshade make poor decisions and somehow survive them.

They knew each other’s habits.

Which made the evening match worse.

Kael understood that as soon as he entered the preparation corridor.

Elias sat on one bench.

Edric on another.

Ten feet between them.

Neither looked angry.

That would have been simpler.

Darius stood near the center with his arms folded.

Hugo Stone had already inspected both weapons.

Edric’s longsword rested across his knees.

Polished.

Blue-wrapped grip.

Silver fox of House Varrow engraved near the guard.

Elias’s sword was simpler.

Dark leather grip.

No ornament.

Balanced for defense and quick redirection.

Kael stopped near the doorway.

How long have they been like this?

Victor answered quietly from behind him.

Since lunch.

Kael looked back.

Victor wore fresh bandages and absolutely no understanding of personal space.

Marcus Wintermere stood beside him.

Leon Ashford leaned against the opposite wall.

Damien Ravenmoor had arrived after finally escaping the first wave of noble invitations.

Victor continued.

I tried talking to them.

Marcus nodded.

That made it worse.

Victor looked offended.

I was helping.

Leon answered.

You asked which one wanted the better funeral.

Kael stared at Victor.

He shrugged.

Tournament humor.

Darius’s eyes moved toward him.

Victor immediately became silent.

Kael stepped farther inside.

Edric looked up first.

My lord.

Elias followed.

Lord Kael.

Kael looked between them.

You’re allowed to speak to each other.

Edric’s mouth moved slightly.

We know.

Elias nodded.

We’re trying not to learn anything new.

Kael frowned.

Why?

Elias answered.

Because anything either of us says now could become part of the fight.

Victor whispered.

That is the most Elias answer possible.

Kael almost smiled.

Edric looked toward Elias.

He’s right.

Elias finally looked at him.

You agree with Victor?

No.

With the part about the fight.

Better.

Some tension broke.

Not much.

Enough.

Darius stepped forward.

This is not a Blackwood spar.

Both men straightened.

He looked toward Elias first.

You know Edric’s habits.

Yes, Sir.

Not all of them.

Elias nodded.

Then Edric.

You know Elias watches patterns.

Yes, Sir.

That does not mean every pattern he believes he sees is real.

Edric’s eyes sharpened.

Darius continued.

Familiarity creates two traps.

First, assuming nothing has changed.

Second, changing so much to surprise the other person that you stop fighting like yourself.

Kael liked that.

Victor whispered.

That was almost inspirational.

Darius looked over.

Ravenshade.

Victor raised both hands.

Silent.

Darius turned back.

Edric.

What is Elias’s greatest strength?

Edric answered without hesitation.

He sees repetition quickly.

Good.

Weakness?

He waits for certainty too long.

Elias’s expression did not change.

Darius looked toward him.

Elias.

Edric’s greatest strength?

Technically clean.

Especially first three movements of an exchange.

Edric’s eyebrow rose.

Interesting.

Weakness?

Elias thought.

He commits harder when he believes the objective is clear.

Edric looked at him properly.

That sounded familiar.

His old failure.

Abandoning a wounded retainer to pursue an opponent.

Then the requisition test.

House loyalty.

Objective focus.

Edric’s jaw tightened slightly.

Darius noticed.

Good.

Now both of you have information.

He looked between them.

Forget the story attached to it.

Elias frowned.

Sir?

Darius pointed toward Edric.

He is not the man who failed seven years ago.

Then toward Elias.

He is not the man who waited too long during the Blackwood preliminary.

The person standing across from you tonight exists now.

Fight him.

Not his record.

Silence.

Then Darius stepped aside.

Weapons.

Hugo handed them over.

Elias rose.

Edric stood.

For the first time that afternoon, they faced one another directly.

Edric extended his forearm.

No holding back.

Elias accepted.

No excuses afterward.

Victor whispered.

That was colder than I expected.

Marcus answered.

Good.

The evening crowd was larger than Kael expected.

Word had spread.

Not because Elias Thorn or Edric Vale were famous.

Not yet.

Because the bracket told a story people understood.

Two men who had traveled together.

Prepared under the same training camp.

One under House Kael.

One under House Varrow.

Both newly recognized Imperial Knights.

First round.

One advances.

One leaves.

Aurelia liked clean tension.

The setting sun turned the upper Coliseum arches orange-red.

Torches had already been lit along the interior walls.

House Varrow’s silver fox banner occupied one section.

Lord Varrow sat at the front this time.

Kael had learned his name from Edric earlier that afternoon.

Lord Garrick Varrow.

The similarity to Garrick Ironhand annoyed Kael immediately.

He had considered asking whether the man had another name.

He did not.

Too late.

Lord Garrick Varrow looked nothing like Blackwood’s blacksmith anyway.

Late fifties.

Lean.

Long blond-gray hair.

Cold blue eyes.

Formal dark-blue coat.

Silver fox clasp.

A man who appeared composed enough to make other people nervous.

He sat with four retainers and one woman Kael assumed was family.

Perhaps Edric’s connection to House Varrow would deepen later.

Not tonight.

Tonight only the match mattered.

Across the arena, the Black Dragon section had become louder than its size justified.

Victor was responsible for half of that.

Kael sat near Lily and Edwin.

Darius took his Shield position below.

Sir Maelin and Sir Corren were among the combat observers.

The Imperial balcony had fewer heirs than earlier.

Cassian remained.

So did Elena.

Marcus Asterion.

Seraphine.

Elara.

A few others had left for political meetings or dinner.

Emperor Augustus was absent.

Opening round.

Expected.

Kael watched Seraphine’s section.

She looked bored before the fight even began.

That irritated him.

Good.

Maybe the match would fix that.

Grand Herald Ken’s voice carried across the arena.

Swordsman and Knight Division.

Round of Sixty-Four.

Sir Elias Thorn of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Elias entered.

No dramatic stride.

No raised sword.

No reaction to the crowd.

He wore dark Black Dragon armor lighter than Marcus’s and less ornate than Edric’s.

His Imperial knight insignia shone at the chest.

Silver.

Not gold.

The crowd applauded politely.

Some recognized him from the execution-order trial.

That created whispers.

The knight who refused.

Kael heard it.

Elias probably did too.

He gave nothing.

Then the opposite gate opened.

Sir Edric Vale of House Varrow.

Edric entered beneath blue and silver.

His House section stood.

Lord Varrow did not.

He simply watched.

Edric looked exactly like someone who belonged in a noble tournament.

Polished armor.

Measured stride.

Formal sword.

Nothing accidental.

Victor leaned toward Kael.

He looks expensive.

Kael answered.

You look injured.

Victor frowned.

Unrelated.

The two fighters met at center.

The judge explained conditions.

Same as Victor and Leon.

Submission.

Decisive control.

Incapacitation.

Three boundary exits.

Judge stoppage.

Twelve-minute limit.

No lethal attacks after defenselessness.

Both nodded.

The judge stepped away.

Edric raised his sword into a clean high-middle guard.

Elias held his lower.

More relaxed.

More defensive.

The bell rang.

Neither attacked.

Victor groaned.

Not again.

Leon smiled.

You really hate patience.

Yes.

Edric moved first.

One straight step.

Then another.

No feint.

Elias shifted backward half a pace.

Edric’s sword came from high right.

Clean diagonal cut.

Elias parried.

Edric immediately followed with a thrust.

Elias redirected.

Third movement—

Low horizontal cut.

Elias stepped out.

Kael remembered Elias’s answer.

Technically clean, especially the first three movements of an exchange.

There.

Exactly three.

Edric reset.

No fourth.

Elias watched.

Edric’s eyes narrowed slightly.

He knew Elias had noticed.

Second exchange.

Different opener.

Low feint.

High thrust.

Elias parried.

Edric rotated into shoulder cut.

Again.

Three movements.

Reset.

Victor leaned forward.

He’s really doing it.

Kael nodded.

Darius said nothing.

Elias did not attack.

That became its own problem.

Edric could control center without risk.

He advanced again.

Elias gave ground.

Another three-part sequence.

Block.

Parry.

Retreat.

No contact.

No mistake.

But no pressure.

Kael frowned.

He’s waiting too much.

Darius heard.

Yes.

Exactly the weakness.

Elias wanted more data.

Edric knew that.

Which meant every exchange he survived without being countered gave him free space.

The third exchange ended.

Edric had pushed Elias nearly halfway toward the western boundary.

No scoring contacts.

Still.

But ring control?

Edric.

Clear.

Sir Corren marked something.

Kael saw it.

Elias needed to change.

Edric attacked again.

First strike high.

Elias parried.

Second thrust.

Elias shifted.

Third—

Edric stopped.

Nothing.

Elias had expected the third.

His body prepared for it.

Edric did not give it.

Instead he took one step back.

Elias froze.

Tiny.

Enough.

Edric smiled.

You counted.

Elias’s eyes narrowed.

Then Edric attacked with the real third action.

Delayed thrust.

Elias barely knocked it aside.

Too late.

The sword tip scraped his breastplate.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

House Varrow cheered.

Victor cursed softly.

Sir Maelin’s head turned.

Victor whispered.

Respectfully.

Kael ignored him.

Edric stepped away.

Now Elias had learned something worse.

Edric knew Elias knew the three-action pattern.

So the pattern could become bait.

Good.

This was exactly what Darius had meant.

Fight the person now.

Not the record.

Elias reset.

One contact down.

He changed guard.

Higher.

Edric advanced.

This time Elias attacked first.

The crowd reacted.

His strike was not fast enough to surprise Edric completely.

But the change itself did.

Straight thrust.

Edric parried outward.

Elias did not continue.

He withdrew.

Edric frowned.

Elias attacked again.

One strike.

Leave.

Again.

Two movements.

Leave.

He was refusing to give Edric enough sequence to read his own pattern.

Interesting.

Edric stepped forward.

Elias attacked the hand.

Not full force.

Blade flick toward glove.

Edric pulled back.

Elias immediately cut low.

Edric blocked.

Then Elias retreated.

No third action.

Victor smiled.

He’s doing the same thing back.

Not exactly.

Leon answered.

He’s making Edric wonder when the sequence ends.

Kael looked at Leon.

You should commentate professionally.

Victor pointed.

No.

That’s my job.

Marcus stared at him.

You nearly lost your first fight twice.

Exactly. Experience.

Edric’s expression became more serious.

He advanced.

Elias retreated.

But only one step.

Edric attacked.

High cut.

Elias parried.

Thrust.

Elias moved.

Then Edric delayed again.

Elias did not react.

Good.

The previous trick no longer worked automatically.

Edric waited.

Elias waited.

The crowd murmured.

Then Elias suddenly struck.

Edric’s delayed third move had left his sword slightly lower than neutral.

Elias aimed at shoulder.

Edric blocked late.

The impact pushed his blade inward.

Elias stepped to the outside.

His second cut came toward Edric’s ribs.

Edric twisted.

Blade scraped armor.

Scoring bell.

One to one.

Blackwood roared.

Elias retreated immediately.

No pursuit.

Edric looked down at the mark.

Then smiled faintly.

You waited for me to wait.

Elias nodded.

Victor looked disgusted.

They sound like philosophers with swords.

Kael laughed.

Three minutes.

One to one.

No ring-outs.

No injuries.

Edric still controlled more center.

Elias had begun disrupting rhythm.

Then Edric changed his entire approach.

He stopped using formal sequences.

Darius’s eyes sharpened.

There.

The next attack was ugly.

A low false step.

Shoulder pressure.

Short cut toward wrist.

No elegant opening.

Elias hesitated.

Exactly.

He had been reading formal structure.

Edric removed it.

Second attack.

Half-thrust.

Immediate retreat.

Third.

Sword hilt toward forearm.

Elias blocked.

But late.

Edric kicked his shin.

Not enough to score.

Enough to disrupt.

Then a real cut struck Elias’s upper arm armor.

Second contact for Edric.

House Varrow cheered.

Elias retreated.

Edric followed harder.

No three-part pattern.

No obvious school sequence.

He had changed.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Edric’s fighting worse?

Different.

Darius answered.

Less polished.

More difficult for Elias.

Good trade.

Edric had sacrificed beauty for unpredictability.

The crowd might not understand why.

Readers would.

Elias took another cut to his side guard.

Third contact.

Not clean enough to injure.

Clean enough to score.

Three to one.

Victor’s face tightened.

Edric pressed.

Elias retreated.

One step.

Two.

Boundary approaching.

Then Elias stopped.

No warning.

Edric had expected continued retreat.

He stepped forward into resistance.

Elias’s sword snapped upward.

Edric blocked.

Elias shoulder-checked him.

Not strong.

Edric barely moved.

Bad matchup.

Edric was physically stronger.

He returned the pressure.

Elias stepped backward.

Boundary horn almost sounded.

Heel inches away.

Edric smiled.

Now.

He attacked hard.

Elias ducked.

Rolled under the blade.

Not backward.

Past Edric.

The crowd erupted.

They switched positions.

Edric turned.

Elias immediately attacked.

One cut toward his exposed flank.

Edric barely blocked.

Second toward shoulder.

Blocked.

Third—

Elias stopped.

Edric had expected continuation.

His guard shifted too far.

Elias thrust straight through the opening.

Chest plate.

Scoring bell.

Three to two.

Blackwood erupted.

Victor slapped the rail.

Elias had used Edric’s own delayed-sequence trick against him.

Not copying exactly.

Understanding principle.

Good.

Edric backed away.

First time all match.

Only two steps.

But Elias noticed.

Then made a mistake.

He followed.

Too quickly.

Kael saw it.

Edric saw it first.

His retreat had been bait.

Elias stepped into range.

Edric’s sword came from low left.

Elias parried.

Edric used the contact to rotate.

His shoulder struck Elias’s chest.

Elias lost balance.

Edric swept his ankle.

Elias fell.

The Coliseum erupted.

Edric’s blade dropped toward throat.

Elias rolled.

The tip struck sand.

Edric followed.

Elias pushed up.

Edric kicked his sword arm.

Elias’s grip weakened.

Second kick.

The sword came free.

It skidded away.

Victor groaned.

Again?

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Blackwood had apparently developed a tradition of being disarmed.

Elias rolled to one knee.

Edric stood between him and his sword.

Classic.

He raised his own blade.

No rush.

Good.

Elias’s eyes moved.

Sword.

Edric.

Boundary.

Nothing.

Then Edric spoke.

You already know what I expect.

Elias looked at him.

Rush the sword.

Yes.

Elias stood slowly.

Then didn’t.

He raised empty hands.

Edric frowned.

Victor whispered.

What is he doing?

Darius answered from below.

Observing.

Victor almost groaned.

Of course.

Edric advanced.

He had weapon.

Elias did not.

He did not need to hurry.

Elias shifted sideways.

Edric matched.

Another step.

Elias moved.

Edric blocked the path to the sword.

Exactly.

Then Elias looked toward the boundary.

Edric saw.

Moved slightly to deny that too.

Good.

Elias had created two things Edric wanted to control.

Sword.

Ring.

One man could not cover both perfectly.

Elias moved toward boundary.

Edric followed.

Then Elias stopped and changed toward sword.

Edric adjusted.

Too fast.

No opening.

Again.

Boundary.

Sword.

Boundary.

Edric started reading.

Dangerous.

Elias knew.

Then he did something stupid-looking.

He stepped outside the ring.

Boundary horn.

First ring-out.

Victor shouted.

Not this again!

Kael stared.

Did Victor infect them?

Darius’s expression tightened.

No.

Different reason.

Elias stepped back inside.

Now Edric was farther from Elias’s sword because he had followed the boundary pressure.

Not enough.

Still between.

But angle changed.

Elias rushed—

not at sword.

At Edric.

Edric expected the sword route.

He shifted half a step wrong.

Elias entered inside blade length.

Caught Edric’s sword wrist with both hands.

Edric immediately drove knee toward ribs.

Elias turned.

Took it on thigh.

Pain.

Held wrist.

Edric tried pulling away.

Stronger.

Elias could not overpower.

So he stepped outside the sword side and rotated his whole body.

Edric’s wrist twisted.

Blade turned.

Not enough to disarm.

But enough to point away.

Elias headbutted Edric’s shoulder guard.

Not face.

Then shoved.

Edric stumbled.

Elias released and ran.

Sword.

Three yards.

Two.

Edric recovered.

Thrust from behind.

Elias dove.

Hand closed around hilt.

Edric’s blade struck Elias’s boot armor.

Scoring bell.

Fourth contact for Edric.

Elias rolled and came up armed.

Pain in ankle.

But weapon recovered.

Four to two.

Not good.

Still alive.

Kael looked toward Darius.

That ring-out?

Calculated.

Yes.

Good?

Darius paused.

Useful.

Not good.

Kael smiled faintly.

Same lesson as Victor.

Risk.

If Edric had forced another immediate boundary exit?

Worse.

If Elias had mistimed the entry?

Potential loss.

Kael nodded.

The tournament was becoming a collection of decisions that worked and still deserved criticism.

Good.

That felt real.

Five minutes.

Edric led four to two.

Elias had one ring-out penalty.

His right ankle hurt.

Edric knew.

Immediately.

Next exchange, he attacked low.

Elias shifted.

Pain.

Tiny flinch.

Edric saw.

Again.

Low feint.

Elias reacted early.

Then Edric attacked high.

Blade struck shoulder armor.

Fifth contact.

Kael cursed.

Victor whispered.

He found the ankle.

Of course.

Elias knew too.

He started changing weight.

More on left leg.

That made his movement slower to the right.

Edric tested.

Low.

High.

Circle.

Every time Elias adjusted, Edric collected information.

Now the observer was being observed.

Kael leaned forward.

This is bad.

Darius nodded.

Very.

Edric’s formal training plus experience had become more dangerous once he stopped trying to look perfect.

He pressed Elias toward one side.

Not boundary.

Toward his injured ankle’s weak direction.

Smart.

Elias parried.

Retreated.

Parried.

Shifted left.

Edric followed.

Then Edric attacked hard at the leg.

Elias lifted foot.

Expected.

Edric changed high.

Elias blocked late.

Impact drove his sword backward into his own shoulder.

No scoring contact.

Still painful.

Edric pressed.

Another.

Elias blocked.

Another.

Now Elias was reacting.

Again.

His weakness.

Too much observation under pressure became delayed action.

Darius leaned forward.

Speak.

Kael frowned.

To Elias?

Not literally.

Darius’s eyes remained on the arena.

Elias needs to make the fight answer him.

Not keep answering Edric.

Elias suddenly attacked.

Bad angle.

Unexpected.

Edric blocked.

Elias attacked again.

Too wide.

Edric stepped aside and countered.

Elias barely parried.

Third attack.

Elias intentionally struck Edric’s guard hard.

Not elegant.

Edric’s eyebrows rose.

Elias continued.

Fourth.

Fifth.

He was not trying to score.

He was forcing Edric to stop choosing.

Victor smiled.

There.

Elias pressed.

Edric gave ground.

One step.

Two.

Then Edric changed direction.

Elias followed.

Pain in ankle.

But continued.

Edric prepared counter.

Elias stopped before it came.

Edric’s sword moved anyway.

Premature.

Elias saw.

He thrust.

Edric twisted.

Blade scraped lower ribs.

Third contact for Elias.

Five to three.

Good.

Elias had finally created false pressure.

Made Edric expect continuation.

Then stopped.

Exactly how Edric had manipulated him earlier.

The fight had become two men stealing lessons from each other in real time.

Excellent.

Six minutes.

Edric still led.

Both breathing harder.

No significant injury beyond Elias’s ankle.

Then the match changed emotionally.

Lord Varrow stood.

Not dramatic.

Just rose and moved closer to the noble rail.

Edric saw him.

One glance.

That was enough.

Kael saw Edric’s shoulders tighten.

House.

Sponsor.

Expectations.

The same weakness from the judgment trial.

He cared what House Varrow thought.

Too much?

Maybe.

Elias saw the glance.

Of course he did.

Edric immediately attacked.

Harder.

Faster.

Trying to prove something.

There.

Kael looked toward Darius.

He saw.

Darius nodded.

Elias did too.

The first cut came high.

Elias blocked.

Second low.

Blocked.

Third shoulder.

Elias retreated.

Edric pursued.

No reset.

Fourth.

Fifth.

His technique remained good.

But the clean discipline was slipping toward urgency.

Elias let him.

Not too much.

Just enough.

Edric pushed.

Crowd cheered.

House Varrow louder.

Edric heard.

Worse.

His Aura strengthened.

Moderate-high.

More than Elias.

Sword impact drove Elias backward.

Again.

Boundary approaching.

Victor frowned.

Elias is getting crushed.

Kael watched Elias’s eyes.

No.

He’s waiting.

Victor groaned.

Of course.

Darius’s voice rose.

Too long.

That changed Kael’s answer.

Yes.

Elias was waiting too long again.

The boundary horn came.

Second ring-out?

No.

His heel crossed once.

That was second boundary exit overall because of earlier voluntary step.

One more meant elimination.

The crowd erupted.

Edric smiled.

Elias stepped back in.

Now he had no room for another mistake.

Victor whispered.

This looks familiar.

Kael nodded.

But Elias had not done it intentionally this time.

Important.

Edric attacked immediately after reset.

He wanted the third ring-out.

Smart.

Elias retreated sideways.

Ankle hurt.

Slow.

Edric cut off angle.

Another step.

Boundary nearing again.

The crowd rose.

Kael gripped rail.

Elias looked toward Lord Varrow.

Not Edric.

Interesting.

Then back.

Edric saw the glance.

Thought Elias was distracted.

Attacked.

Elias had wanted exactly that.

He did not parry the sword.

He stepped inside.

Dangerous.

Edric’s blade scraped across Elias’s back plate.

Sixth contact.

But Elias was now chest to chest.

He trapped Edric’s sword arm under his own left elbow.

Edric tried pulling free.

Elias did not fight the arm directly.

He turned his entire body and used Edric’s forward step.

Edric stumbled.

Elias kicked behind the knee.

Edric dropped.

Elias’s sword came across.

Flat against throat guard.

Clear control?

The judge moved.

Edric reacted instantly.

His free hand grabbed Elias’s sword wrist.

Twisted.

Elias lost angle.

Edric rolled.

Both hit sand.

Crowd erupted.

No stoppage.

They grappled.

Edric stronger.

Elias more positional.

Edric punched Elias’s ribs.

Elias shifted.

Edric tried mounting.

Elias hooked leg.

They rolled.

Elias’s injured ankle screamed.

His face changed.

Edric saw.

Pressed there with his knee.

Not illegal.

Cruel.

Effective.

Elias grunted.

Grip loosened.

Edric trapped his sword arm.

Now clear control coming.

Victor shouted.

Move!

Elias tried.

Edric heavier.

Better leverage.

The judge leaned closer.

Three seconds.

Maybe less.

Elias stopped fighting the pin.

Kael’s eyes widened.

Not surrender.

He released the sword.

Edric’s control had been built around the armed wrist.

The weapon dropped.

Elias’s empty hand slipped free.

He turned under Edric’s arm.

Edric adjusted.

Too late.

Elias came behind him.

No weapon.

But back control.

He wrapped one arm across Edric’s upper chest and trapped the sword arm.

Edric stood explosively.

Elias clung.

Edric slammed backward.

Elias hit sand beneath him.

Pain.

Released.

Edric turned.

Elias rolled.

Both separated.

Weapons on ground.

One near each.

Seven minutes thirty.

Now ugly.

Good.

Both moved for swords.

Edric reached his first.

Elias reached his own half a second later.

Back to standing.

The crowd roared approval.

Kael exhaled.

Victor looked exhausted from watching.

I hate this.

Marcus nodded.

Good fight.

Victor glared.

Both can be true.

Elias’s ankle had worsened.

That changed everything.

Edric knew.

Now he slowed deliberately.

No need to rush.

Six contacts to three.

Two ring-outs on Elias.

One more boundary exit ends it.

Edric could force movement.

Elias had to create something without mobility.

Kael looked toward Darius.

How?

Darius answered.

He needs Edric to come to him.

Why would Edric?

Exactly.

Elias needed to make patience dangerous.

Hard when behind.

The clock passed eight minutes.

Four remaining.

Edric circled.

No attack.

Elias remained center.

Interesting reversal.

The crowd started booing Edric lightly.

House Varrow did not.

They understood.

Lead.

Position.

Opponent injured.

Why take unnecessary risk?

Elias raised his sword.

Then lowered it.

Edric stayed away.

Elias took one step.

Pain.

Edric noticed.

Still nothing.

Two steps.

Edric moved.

Maintained distance.

Elias could not chase effectively.

He needed another tool.

Then he spoke.

First words in several minutes.

Your lord is watching.

Edric stopped.

Kael’s eyebrows rose.

Victor whispered.

Oh.

Elias continued.

You looked at him before you changed your pace.

Edric’s expression hardened.

Do not.

Elias nodded.

There it is.

Edric took one step forward.

Then stopped himself.

Good control.

Elias continued.

Are you fighting me or proving something to him?

House Varrow’s section went silent.

Kael looked toward Lord Varrow.

No visible anger.

Interesting.

Edric replied.

You’re trying to provoke me.

Yes.

Honest.

That irritated Edric more.

He smiled thinly.

Then you’ll wait.

Elias nodded.

Maybe.

Silence.

The crowd murmured.

Elias continued.

But if you win because I cannot walk, what does he learn?

Victor whispered.

That’s mean.

Marcus answered.

Effective.

Edric’s jaw tightened.

He knew the logic was false.

Winning was winning.

No shame exploiting injury within rules.

But pride did not care about logic.

House expectation.

Old flaw.

Objective clarity.

Prove himself.

Lord Varrow remained standing.

Watching.

Edric finally moved.

Not wild.

But forward.

Elias had succeeded.

He had made patience feel like cowardice.

Dangerous.

Maybe dishonorable manipulation?

No.

Tournament psychology.

Valid.

Darius watched closely.

Edric attacked.

Controlled.

Elias blocked.

Second.

Elias parried.

Third.

Elias did not retreat.

Could not.

He rotated around his healthy left leg.

Edric changed angle.

Fourth.

Elias blocked.

Edric pressed.

No boundary movement.

Elias was anchored.

That helped defense.

Hurt escape.

Edric attacked high.

Elias parried.

Low.

Elias barely shifted ankle.

Pain.

Edric saw.

Next low feint.

Elias reacted.

High strike.

Edric’s blade hit shoulder.

Seventh contact.

Seven to three.

Kael grimaced.

The provocation had brought Edric in.

But now Elias had to do something with it.

Edric continued.

Elias blocked.

Another.

Blocked.

Then Edric overcommitted slightly.

Not much.

Elias saw.

His sword turned.

Instead of attacking Edric’s body, he struck Edric’s blade near the guard.

Hard.

Edric’s grip held.

Second strike same spot.

Edric frowned.

Third.

He pulled sword back.

Elias followed with thrust.

Edric parried.

Then Elias kicked.

With injured foot?

No.

Healthy left.

Straight into Edric’s forward knee.

Edric stumbled.

Elias stepped in despite pain.

Pommel to jaw guard.

Scoring bell?

No blade.

Still impact.

Edric’s head snapped back.

Elias grabbed his sword wrist.

Same close control attempt.

Edric expected.

He rotated.

But Elias let go early.

That surprised him.

Elias stepped behind.

Sword flat hit Edric’s back plate.

Fourth contact.

Seven to four.

Crowd roared.

Edric spun.

Elias was already retreating one small step.

Not enough to reach boundary.

Good.

Nine minutes.

Seven to four.

Three contacts behind.

Elias needed more.

Could possibly still win by decisive submission or disarm control.

Score not everything.

He knew.

Edric knew.

The psychology changed.

Edric returned to patience again.

Elias had shown he could punish overcommitment.

Good.

Then the arena clock became part of the fight.

Three minutes.

Elias’s biggest enemy.

Not Edric.

Time.

He advanced carefully.

Edric moved.

Elias could not pursue quickly.

He feinted.

Edric ignored.

Again.

Nothing.

Elias raised Aura.

Moderate.

Focused through legs.

Kael leaned forward.

Bad ankle.

Aura reinforcement could support.

Also worsen if overused.

Darius watched.

Elias took faster step.

Pain hidden.

Edric adjusted.

Elias attacked.

First.

Second.

Third.

For once, a clean sequence.

Edric parried all.

Then Elias continued fourth.

Edric had expected reset after three based on earlier pattern games.

The fourth slipped through.

Blade touched upper arm.

Fifth contact for Elias.

Seven to five.

Good.

Elias had reintroduced the original pattern after abandoning it.

Edric frowned.

Now old information returned as new.

Excellent.

Elias attacked again.

One.

Two.

Stopped.

Edric waited.

Elias did nothing.

Then attacked after delay.

Edric blocked.

Elias was making sequences unreadable now.

Too late perhaps.

But useful.

Edric tried countering.

Elias parried.

Another exchange.

No contact.

Ten minutes.

Two left.

Victor was silent now.

Everyone.

The fight had become a question.

Could Elias create a decisive finish before his ankle and clock ended him?

Edric had other plans.

He shifted toward the side with open arena.

Forced Elias to turn.

Elias rotated on left leg.

Pain less.

Edric circled farther.

Elias followed.

Then Edric suddenly rushed.

Unexpected.

He had been patient for almost a minute.

Sword high.

Elias raised guard.

Edric did not strike.

He body-checked.

Elias stumbled.

Toward boundary.

No.

Two ring-outs already.

Elias’s heel neared line.

Edric pressed shoulder.

One more step.

Tournament over.

Elias dropped his sword.

Victor shouted.

Again?!

Elias used both hands on Edric’s shoulders.

Instead of resisting backward, he turned sideways.

Edric’s pressure carried across.

Elias pivoted around left leg.

His injured right foot barely touched.

Edric passed.

Now Edric was closer to boundary.

Elias shoved.

Edric stepped out.

Boundary horn.

First ring-out against Edric.

The Coliseum erupted.

Elias retrieved his sword immediately.

Smart.

No celebrating.

Edric returned.

One minute twenty.

Score seven-five.

Boundary two against Elias, one against Edric.

No automatic result yet.

Edric’s expression had changed.

Now irritation.

He had almost ended it.

Elias escaped.

The clock hurt Elias.

But frustration hurt Edric.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Kael knew.

This was where fights turned.

Not through power.

Through emotion.

Edric attacked.

Too fast.

Not wild.

Faster than necessary.

Elias blocked.

Second.

Blocked.

Third.

Elias expected delay?

No.

Edric continued fourth.

Elias barely parried.

Fifth.

Aura strengthened.

Elias’s sword knocked outward.

Edric thrust.

Elias twisted.

Blade grazed side.

Eighth contact.

Eight to five.

Forty-five seconds.

Victor’s shoulders fell.

Three down.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Still possible.

Always.

Decisive control.

Submission.

Disarm.

Anything.

But Elias needed it now.

Edric knew.

He backed away.

Smart.

Very smart.

No pride.

The previous provocation no longer worked.

He had learned.

Elias advanced.

Pain.

Thirty seconds.

Edric circled.

Elias attacked.

Missed.

Edric retreated.

Twenty-five.

Crowd counting began.

Elias stopped.

Interesting.

He could not chase.

So he raised his sword.

Then threw it.

The entire Coliseum gasped.

Not at Edric’s body.

At his sword.

The spinning blade struck Edric’s blade near the middle.

Metal crashed.

Edric’s weapon knocked sideways.

Not disarmed.

But his attention followed impact.

Elias rushed unarmed.

Twenty.

Edric recovered.

Sword came up.

Elias entered inside.

Caught wrist.

Edric twisted.

Elias grabbed elbow.

Fifteen.

Edric stronger.

He pushed Elias away.

Elias clung.

Dropped weight.

His injured ankle collapsed intentionally.

Both fell.

Ten.

Edric tried pulling sword free.

Elias trapped arm between legs.

Ground lock.

Not perfect.

But dangerous.

Eight.

Edric punched.

Elias absorbed.

Six.

He twisted wrist.

Edric’s sword loosened.

Five.

Victor shouted.

Come on!

Four.

Edric shifted hips.

Elias lost angle.

Three.

Edric yanked arm free.

Two.

Elias reached again.

One.

Final bell.

Both froze.

Edric still held sword.

No submission.

No decisive control.

Time.

The arena went silent.

Elias lay on the sand.

Edric knelt beside him.

Both breathing hard.

The result seemed obvious.

Score eight to five.

Two ring-outs against Elias, one against Edric.

Edric had controlled more center.

Elias had shown adaptation.

But not enough.

Kael knew.

Victor knew.

Everyone did.

The judges still conferred.

Formal process.

Elias sat up slowly.

His face revealed nothing.

Edric stood.

Looked down.

Offered hand.

Elias took it.

Rose carefully on the injured ankle.

No anger.

No excuse.

Just result.

Grand Herald Ken received the slate.

Winner by decision—

Kael already knew.

Sir Edric Vale of House Varrow.

House Varrow erupted.

Lord Garrick Varrow finally applauded.

Standing.

Proud.

Blackwood applauded too.

Not loudly at first.

Then Kael stood.

Victor followed.

Leon.

Marcus.

Damien.

Lily.

Edwin.

The Black Dragon section rose for Elias.

He had lost.

But he was still their knight.

Still Black Dragon.

Still Elias.

The applause grew.

Elias looked toward them.

For once, his face showed everything.

Disappointment.

Pain.

And something quieter.

Acceptance.

He bowed his head.

Then turned toward Edric.

Edric extended his forearm.

Elias accepted.

You saw too much.

Edric said.

Elias answered.

Not fast enough.

Edric smiled faintly.

Next time.

Elias nodded.

Next time.

The bracket board changed.

Sir Edric Vale — ADVANCES

The line moved.

Elias Thorn’s tournament ended.

Just like that.

No death.

No disgrace.

No secret rescue.

He lost.

The bracket did not bend because he was Black Dragon.

Kael liked that even though it hurt.

It had to.

Otherwise the tournament meant nothing.

Darius met Elias in the exit corridor.

Kael arrived seconds later.

Elias’s ankle was already swelling.

Sir.

Darius looked at him.

Why did you lose?

No comfort first.

Of course.

Elias answered.

I let Edric control too much space early.

Yes.

Waited too long for patterns.

Yes.

He changed when I thought I understood him.

Yes.

I let the ankle become information he could use.

You could not prevent that entirely.

Elias nodded.

I also provoked him into attacking and didn’t capitalize enough.

Good.

Then he looked down.

I ran out of time.

Darius stared.

No.

Elias looked up.

Sir?

Time did not surprise you.

You knew the limit.

You ran out of decisions.

That hit.

Kael felt it.

Darius continued.

You spent too many early minutes collecting information you never fully needed.

By the time you became proactive, Edric had the lead, your ankle was damaged, and the clock belonged to him.

Elias nodded slowly.

Observation became inaction.

Again.

Yes.

Silence.

Then Darius stepped closer.

But you spoke earlier than you would have months ago.

You changed his rhythm.

You recovered from disarm.

You identified House pressure and used it without losing yourself.

You nearly created a finish with twenty seconds left.

Elias looked at him.

Darius continued.

You lost a good fight.

Do not make it smaller because you wanted the other result.

Elias’s expression changed.

Thank you, Sir.

Darius nodded.

Then:

Healer.

Elias almost smiled.

Yes, Sir.

Kael walked beside Elias toward the healer chambers.

For several steps, neither spoke.

Then Elias said:

I wanted to win.

Kael looked over.

Good.

Elias frowned slightly.

Good?

Yes.

You don’t have to pretend losing feels noble.

Elias stared ahead.

It doesn’t.

Kael smiled faintly.

There you go.

They walked.

Elias continued.

I thought passing knighthood would make losing easier.

Did it?

No.

Kael laughed once.

Good.

Elias looked toward him.

Why do you keep saying good?

Because now you know.

Know what?

That the title wasn’t the goal.

Elias became quiet.

Kael continued.

You got Sir.

You passed.

You still wanted more.

That’s useful information.

Elias nodded slowly.

I want another tournament someday.

Then enter one.

I want to beat Edric.

Kael smiled.

Better.

Elias almost laughed.

Then he looked toward the Black Dragon insignia on his chest.

I’m still deciding about House oath.

Kael’s expression stayed neutral.

Good.

Elias looked surprised.

Kael continued.

Decide at the ball.

After you hear whatever offers come.

Even after losing?

Kael looked at him.

Marquis Oren told me to watch who nobles speak to after a loss.

Elias frowned.

Why?

Because winning tells people one thing.

How you lose tells them another.

As they reached the healer corridor, they discovered Kael was right.

Two representatives waited.

One wore Marchioness Sabine Greymark’s stag-and-river clasp.

The other wore Elena Asterion’s pale blue household colors.

Elias stopped.

Kael smiled faintly.

Looks like losing didn’t make you invisible.

The representative from Elena’s household stepped forward.

Sir Elias Thorn?

Elias looked at Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

Your choice.

Elias turned back.

Yes.

The woman bowed slightly.

Lady Elena would like to speak with you during the Imperial Ball.

Not a formal service offer.

A conversation.

Elias’s expression changed.

Why?

The representative answered.

She watched your execution trial.

And your match tonight.

She believes people who think carefully are useful.

Then added:

She also believes people who think too long sometimes need the right work.

Kael almost laughed.

Elena had apparently understood Elias perfectly.

Elias accepted the invitation.

Thank you.

The Greymark representative stepped forward next.

Marchioness Sabine requests a similar conversation.

Elias blinked.

Two.

After losing.

Kael remembered Marquis Oren.

Exactly.

Edric’s post-fight corridor was even busier.

House Varrow congratulated him.

Lord Garrick Varrow approached personally.

Kael stayed farther away.

This was not his moment.

Edric bowed.

My lord.

Varrow looked at the blood on his armor.

The exhaustion.

Then the bracket board beyond.

You advanced.

Yes, my lord.

Good.

Only that.

Edric’s face shifted slightly.

Perhaps he expected more.

Then Lord Varrow added:

Your first three exchanges were too predictable.

Edric stared.

Victor, listening from too close, whispered.

Oh no.

Kael covered his mouth to hide a smile.

Edric answered.

Yes, my lord.

You allowed Thorn to bait your pride twice.

Yes.

You corrected the second time.

Yes.

Lord Varrow nodded.

Good.

There.

That was the relationship.

Not cold exactly.

Demanding.

Very House Varrow.

Then the lord looked toward Kael.

Prince Kael.

Kael inclined his head.

Lord Varrow.

Your man fought well.

Kael answered.

So did yours.

Varrow’s gaze moved toward the healer corridor Elias had entered.

He has no household oath yet.

Not yet.

Varrow looked back.

May I speak with him at the ball?

Kael smiled faintly.

You can ask him.

Varrow’s eyebrow rose.

Good answer.

Apparently everyone in Aurelia had a version of that phrase.

Kael hated it.

The evening continued.

Other matches played out.

Kael stayed.

Not every one needed equal narrative space, but some mattered for bracket texture.

Sir Davren Ko, the independent saber fighter who had upset House Velmire earlier, won his Round of 32 match through stamina again.

His name became more dangerous.

Duke Carthain’s swordsman Otho Keld—Marcus’s opponent tomorrow—watched from the candidate seats and took notes.

Kael noticed.

Good.

Marcus would not be the only one studying.

Mira Solenne fought Sir Callen Mor of House Avenor near the end of the night.

Her fight lasted only six minutes.

Not because it was easy.

Because Mira forced chaos.

Callen used formal sword-and-buckler discipline.

Mira’s two narrow swords created angles he hated.

She deliberately gave up one blade halfway through, threw it into the sand near his rear side—not at him—and forced him to reposition because he believed she planned to retrieve it.

She never did.

Instead she used the empty hand to trap his buckler.

Won by disarm and throat control.

Dame Mira Solenne advanced.

Victor looked at Kael afterward.

I told you she fights weird.

Kael nodded.

Useful weird.

Mira walked past them smiling.

I heard that.

Good.

Brennar Holt lost.

That one surprised people.

Sir Roderic Seln of House Carthain—the same man who had commanded Leon’s river scenario—fought with disciplined defensive swordsmanship and better tournament experience.

Brennar had strength.

Practical guard combat.

Excellent judgment.

But his attacks became predictable after the sixth minute.

Roderic wore him down.

Won by decision.

Brennar accepted it.

No excuse.

He had passed knighthood at thirty-eight.

The tournament ended.

He smiled afterward.

My daughter will care more about the title.

Victor asked.

And you?

Brennar looked toward the bracket.

I’ll complain for a week.

Everyone laughed.

Good.

Another loss that mattered without destroying a character.

By the time the Coliseum began emptying, Blackwood’s tournament status had changed.

Victor advanced.

Leon advanced.

Damien advanced.

Elias eliminated.

Mira advanced.

Brennar eliminated.

Edric advanced under House Varrow.

Marcus had not fought yet.

His match waited tomorrow morning.

Kael stood before the updated Swordsman bracket.

Lines now filled.

Some expected.

Some not.

Victor’s Round of 32 opponent had been decided.

Sir Tavric Dorn — House Greymark.

Victor studied the name.

Marchioness Sabine’s House.

Darius answered before he asked.

Shieldless longsword.

Strong left-side defense.

Fast opening tempo.

Victor sighed.

Tomorrow?

No.

One rest day before your next round.

Victor smiled.

Finally.

Darius added.

Training at dawn.

Victor’s smile died.

Kael laughed.

Leon found his next opponent.

Sir Cassel Roen — House Cassian

That changed the air.

Cassian-sponsored knight.

Former military officer candidate.

Leon looked interested.

Not intimidated.

Good.

Damien’s Spear Round of 16 opponent had also been decided.

Dame Aris Valenne — Independent / Northern Road Guard

Kael stared at the surname.

Valenne.

Not Valen.

Darius noticed his suspicion.

Different family.

Kael nodded.

Good.

He had become paranoid.

Aris’s public record showed a glaive-like spear variant, rapid rotational defense, excellent endurance, low raw Aura.

Different matchup from Torren.

Good.

No repeats.

Then Marcus found Otho Keld’s name.

Tomorrow.

First morning match among Blackwood.

Sir Otho Keld of House Carthain.

Thirty-three.

Household swordsman.

Heavy longsword.

Strong body.

Higher formal combat experience.

Marcus stood before the bracket for several seconds.

Victor walked beside him.

Nervous?

Marcus smiled.

Yes.

Victor blinked.

You admitted that fast.

Marcus looked toward him.

You did too.

True.

Then Marcus’s eyes moved toward Darius’s old Hall of Champions corridor.

Raw Aura had always been his identity.

Now he would fight a man who had survived long enough to make raw power less impressive.

Kael could already see the question.

Would Marcus blast harder?

Or had the candle finally taught him enough restraint to fight intelligently under pressure?

Darius approached.

Wintermere.

Marcus turned.

Sir.

No candle tonight.

Marcus stared.

Victor gasped.

Miracle.

Darius continued.

You’ve learned what it teaches.

Tomorrow you prove whether you can use it when someone is hitting you.

Marcus nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Darius looked toward Otho Keld’s name.

He is older.

More experienced.

His sword work is less explosive than yours.

His defense is better.

Marcus listened.

He will try to make you waste Aura.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Exactly his weakness.

Darius continued.

If you fight the man you imagine—

you lose.

Marcus glanced toward Darius.

The old lesson.

Fight the person now.

Yes.

Then Darius walked away.

Marcus stared at the bracket again.

Kael stood beside him.

You ready?

Marcus answered honestly.

I’ll know tomorrow.

Kael smiled faintly.

Good answer.

Marcus looked at him.

Now you’re saying it too?

Kael frowned.

Damn.

Victor laughed.

Aurelia has ruined all of us.

Outside, the Coliseum lights burned against the night.

Elias Thorn sat in a healer room with two ball invitations despite losing.

Brennar Holt had already written his daughter.

Mira Solenne had moved forward.

Edric Vale had survived the man who understood him best.

Victor had discovered aggression did not need to disappear.

Leon had learned reliability could still adapt.

Damien had survived a veteran who owned the first half of their fight.

And tomorrow Marcus Wintermere would step onto the sand.

The tournament was narrowing.

So were the excuses.

At the beginning, everyone had weaknesses hidden beneath potential.

Now the bracket was forcing those weaknesses into the open where thousands could see them.

For some, that exposure would become humiliation.

For others—

growth.

And somewhere deeper inside the Coliseum, the Golden Laurel waited for people who were still several victories away from deserving to think about it.
