The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Damien Ravenmoor entered the spear ring without looking toward the Black Dragon section.

Kael noticed because Damien usually looked.

Not for reassurance. Damien had never been the type to search the stands for permission before doing something difficult. But before every previous trial, he had at least acknowledged the people watching him with a glance, a nod, or the smallest shift of expression.

This time he kept his attention entirely on Dame Aris Valenne.

That told Kael more than nerves would have.

Aris was already waiting near the opposite side of the ring.

Her weapon made the first impression.

Calling it a spear was technically correct, but only barely. The shaft was longer than Damien’s by almost a foot, and the blade widened near the base before narrowing into a reinforced point. It sat somewhere between a military spear and a glaive, built for slashing arcs as much as thrusting.

She held it one-handed near the center while the other rested loosely against the shaft.

Relaxed.

Too relaxed.

Victor leaned over the rail.

She looks like she’s waiting for someone to bring her a drink.

Elias sat beside him with his injured ankle extended.

That’s probably intentional.

Victor glanced down.

You say that about everyone.

Because most experienced fighters aren’t accidentally comfortable before a match.

Marcus Wintermere had joined them after finally escaping the healer’s inspection. He folded his arms.

Look at her feet.

Kael did.

Aris stood with neither foot fully committed forward. Her weight remained centered enough that she could move in either direction without first shifting.

Damien, by comparison, used a more conventional spear stance.

Left foot forward.

Rear heel light.

Weapon held at a middle line suitable for thrusting or parrying.

The judge stepped between them and reviewed the rules.

The spear division used the same twelve-minute limit, three-boundary rule, decisive-control standard, and scoring system as the swordsmen, though the larger weapons changed the space considerably.

A clean blade contact counted.

A controlled thrust to protected target areas counted.

Shaft strikes could create position but did not score unless the rules specifically recognized the protected weapon head or blade.

No deliberate attacks to unarmored joints.

No killing thrusts once a fighter lost meaningful defense.

Both competitors acknowledged.

The judge retreated.

Aris rolled her shoulders once.

Damien lowered his spear tip.

The bell rang.

Aris moved immediately.

Not forward.

Sideways.

Her rear foot crossed.

The spear rotated.

One circle.

Then another.

The blade traced a wide line through the air between them.

Victor frowned.

She’s not attacking.

Marcus answered.

She’s measuring.

Damien did not move.

Aris circled left.

Her weapon continued rotating in smooth, controlled arcs. Sometimes the blade passed high enough to threaten Damien’s head. Other times it swept low enough that stepping forward carelessly would put his knee or ankle inside range.

Kael understood the problem almost immediately.

Damien had longer reach than most swordsmen.

Aris had longer reach than Damien.

Worse, she was constantly moving the dangerous part of the weapon.

A thrusting fighter usually gave you a line to avoid.

Aris gave him an area.

Damien advanced half a step.

Aris’s spear swept low.

He stopped.

The blade passed where his front shin would have been.

No score.

No contact.

Aris continued rotating.

Damien stepped right.

She circled opposite.

He moved again.

She changed the direction of the rotation without stopping.

Kael leaned forward.

She’s controlling him already.

Darius stood below with the combat observers.

Yes.

Victor looked toward him.

Damien hasn’t done anything.

Exactly.

Darius’s answer made Victor frown.

Kael understood.

Aris’s weapon was making Damien spend movement without committing anything herself.

She had already made him react three times.

Damien knew it too.

His eyes dropped briefly.

Not to the spear.

To her feet.

Good.

The next rotation came high.

Damien stepped inside.

The crowd reacted immediately.

Aris changed grip.

The high circle collapsed into a straight thrust.

Damien parried with the middle of his shaft.

Wood and steel cracked.

He continued forward.

Aris withdrew two quick steps.

Not enough.

Damien thrust.

Aris turned her body.

The spear tip passed her ribs.

She rotated her weapon from behind her shoulder.

Damien saw the blade returning from his blind side and ducked.

It passed over his head.

He tried thrusting again.

Aris was already moving away.

Reset.

No contact.

No score.

But Damien had crossed her outer range.

Victor nodded.

That’s it.

Elias shook his head.

Not yet.

Victor looked annoyed.

He got inside.

For less than two seconds.

And?

Aris left.

The difference mattered.

Damien had proven he could enter.

He had not proven he could keep her there.

Aris resumed circling.

One minute.

No score.

Then she spoke.

You watch feet.

Damien answered.

They’re harder to lie with.

Aris smiled.

Not impossible.

Her next step looked identical to the previous ones.

Then it wasn’t.

Instead of circling away, she planted hard and drove the butt of the spear into the sand.

The shaft bent slightly under pressure.

Her body pivoted around it.

The blade swept from an angle Damien had not seen before.

He raised his spear.

Too late.

The flat edge scraped across his shoulder armor.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

Aris landed three feet to his right.

The crowd applauded.

Damien reset immediately.

No frustration.

Good.

Kael looked toward Darius.

She used the spear like a pivot.

Yes.

Is that normal?

For her.

Of course.

Aris smiled from across the ring.

Feet can lie if the rest of the body helps.

Damien nodded once.

Useful.

Victor groaned.

Everyone is giving each other lessons now.

Mira Solenne had appeared behind them at some point.

Maybe we’re all becoming better people.

Victor looked back.

You stole my food yesterday.

Better fighters.

Fair.

Aris resumed the rotation.

Damien no longer tried entering immediately.

Instead he changed his spear position.

Higher.

Closer to his body.

Shorter apparent reach.

Kael frowned.

Why give up range?

Marcus answered.

Faster recovery.

Elias nodded.

And less weapon for Aris to catch.

That second part became obvious on the next exchange.

Aris swept her blade toward Damien’s spear rather than his body.

Had he been holding full extension, she might have hooked the shaft and pulled him off line.

Instead Damien withdrew the weapon close to his chest.

The blade missed.

He stepped in behind it.

Thrust.

Aris moved.

Damien did not chase the body.

He attacked the ground beside her lead foot.

Not trying to stab her.

Forcing the step.

Aris shifted left.

Damien immediately moved into the space she abandoned.

Interesting.

He was not attacking where she was.

He was attacking where he wanted her not to remain.

Aris’s eyes sharpened.

Damien thrust again.

Not full commitment.

She moved right.

He followed the center line.

Aris rotated her spear.

Damien blocked the shaft rather than the blade.

That shortened the lever.

Aris could not generate the same force.

Damien stepped inside.

Shoulder to shoulder almost.

His spear was now too long for a clean thrust.

So was hers.

He drove the wooden shaft across her chest armor.

Not a scoring blade contact.

But position.

Aris stumbled one step.

Damien pulled his spear back with one hand and shortened his grip.

The blade came forward from close range.

Aris twisted.

The spear point touched the side of her breastplate.

Scoring bell.

One to one.

Blackwood cheered.

Damien did not pursue.

He stepped away before Aris could punish the short grip.

Good.

Aris looked toward the contact mark.

Then smiled.

You’re not fighting my spear.

Damien answered.

Trying not to.

That earned a laugh.

Two minutes.

Tie.

The next exchange lasted almost forty seconds without a scoring strike.

It was the most important part of the fight so far.

Aris began changing the height of her rotations.

High.

Middle.

Low.

No predictable sequence.

Damien watched her shoulders.

Then hips.

Then feet.

Never the blade for more than a fraction.

When she stepped left, he moved right.

When she threatened low, he did not retreat automatically.

He used small adjustments.

Less wasted movement.

Aris increased speed.

Damien held.

Then she suddenly stopped the weapon dead.

The absence of motion was more dangerous than the motion had been.

Damien’s attention caught for half a beat.

Aris thrust.

Fast.

Straight.

He twisted aside.

The blade scraped his side armor.

Scoring bell.

Two to one Aris.

Kael winced.

She trained him to watch movement and then punished him with stillness.

Elias nodded.

Yes.

Victor stared.

Did all of you become unbearable overnight?

Marcus looked thoughtful.

Possibly.

Aris withdrew.

Damien looked at her.

That was good.

She shrugged.

You were getting comfortable.

Damien smiled faintly.

Not anymore.

Three minutes.

Aris led two-one.

Damien changed.

He stopped trying to read every rotation.

At first Kael thought he was simply becoming reckless.

Then he realized Damien had chosen a narrower set of information.

Feet.

Distance.

Center line.

Everything else became secondary.

Aris rotated high.

Damien stayed.

Low.

Stayed.

Blade passed within two feet of him.

Still.

Aris stepped.

Damien moved only then.

One step.

She changed direction.

He matched.

Another.

He matched.

Her spear continued moving, but Damien no longer allowed each movement to command his body.

Darius’s posture shifted slightly.

Approval?

Maybe.

Aris noticed too.

She accelerated the spear.

Damien ignored.

Then she advanced.

He reacted.

Thrust.

Aris parried.

She rotated over his shaft.

Hooked.

Damien released one hand.

The hook failed to control both arms.

He spun his own spear free.

Aris swept high.

Damien ducked.

Instead of chasing the weapon with his eyes, he stepped toward her planted foot.

Too close.

Aris tried retreating.

Damien thrust low toward the protected thigh.

She turned.

Contact.

Scoring bell.

Two-two.

Blackwood roared.

Damien continued one step.

Then stopped himself.

Good.

No unnecessary pursuit.

Aris reset.

Now she looked less amused.

Not angry.

Interested.

The fight shifted again at four minutes.

Aris stopped circling around Damien.

She made Damien circle around her.

She planted near the center and used the full length of the spear to rotate in broad defensive arcs.

A moving wall.

Damien approached from one side.

Blade swept.

He withdrew.

Other side.

The shaft reversed.

He stopped.

Victor frowned.

That looks awful.

Marcus nodded.

She’s making a circle he has to enter.

Why doesn’t he just rush?

Elias looked at Victor.

Because the blade exists.

Right.

Damien feinted entry.

Aris reacted with a low sweep.

He remained outside.

Again.

High.

He stayed.

Third time.

Aris did not move.

Damien had begun asking questions.

Which movements were automatic?

Which were choices?

He feinted left.

No response.

Right.

Aris adjusted half a step.

There.

Damien moved right again.

She adjusted.

He did not enter.

Again.

Aris shifted.

Damien smiled.

She saw it.

Stop looking at my rear foot.

Damien answered.

Make me.

Aris moved.

Damien attacked the moment her rear foot crossed.

Not after.

During.

Her stance was briefly narrower.

Less stable.

His spear drove straight.

Aris parried.

But the force moved her.

Damien stepped forward.

Second thrust.

She blocked with shaft.

Third.

She retreated.

Damien followed.

This time correctly.

Not chasing the blade.

Chasing the feet.

Aris tried rotating.

Damien struck the shaft near her hands.

Her weapon angle broke.

He moved inside.

Spear butt into her hip.

She stumbled.

Damien shortened grip.

Thrust to chest.

Aris barely knocked it aside.

No score.

He thrust again.

Aris twisted.

Blade scraped shoulder.

Scoring bell.

Three-two Damien.

The Black Dragon section exploded.

Damien backed away.

Breathing harder now.

Aris looked at him.

You found it.

Damien did not pretend ignorance.

Your rightward circle is slower when the rear foot crosses.

Aris nodded.

Temporary flaw.

Still a flaw.

Good.

Victor groaned loudly.

Kael laughed.

Five minutes.

Damien led three-two.

Aris’s expression changed.

Not dramatically.

She simply stopped teaching.

Until now, Kael had the sense that part of her enjoyed seeing whether Damien could solve things.

Now she began fighting to win.

Her Aura appeared.

Low.

Controlled.

Just as her public record suggested.

It did not flood her body.

It concentrated through hands, forearms, and the spear shaft.

The next rotation became faster.

Not merely because of strength.

Because the weapon recovered from each direction change more quickly.

Damien stepped back.

Aris pursued.

First sweep high.

Damien blocked.

The impact twisted his spear.

Second came low.

He jumped back.

Third thrust immediately.

Damien parried.

Aris continued.

Fourth.

Fifth.

Her weapon never became still.

Damien had found the feet.

Now she denied him enough time to look.

He retreated.

Aris pressed.

Boundary still far.

Damien tried entering.

The shaft cracked across his forearm.

Not a blade score.

Pain.

He recoiled.

Aris’s real attack followed.

Thrust to chest.

Contact.

Three-three.

She did not stop.

The judge reset them.

Aris immediately resumed pressure.

Damien blocked one sweep.

Second.

Third.

He used Aura.

Moderate.

More than Aris.

Kael frowned.

Damien had greater raw output.

But Aris’s weapon mechanics meant she did not need as much.

Next exchange.

Damien reinforced the parry.

Aris deliberately let the weapons meet.

Then released her pressure.

Damien’s heavier reinforcement moved his own spear farther than intended.

Aris changed direction.

Blade touched his upper arm.

Four-three Aris.

Marcus muttered.

Same thing Otho did to me.

Darius heard.

Yes.

Marcus looked down.

Apparently everyone came to the tournament with the same book.

Darius answered.

No.

They came with the same understanding that wasting force is useful when the opponent does it.

Marcus nodded.

Fair.

Damien reset.

Aris began rotating again.

Now Damien faced the real test.

Could he keep solving her once tired?

Six minutes.

Halfway.

Aris led four-three.

Damien lowered his Aura.

Good.

Aris advanced.

Sweep.

He moved.

Another.

Blocked normally.

Third.

He ducked.

No reinforcement.

Aris thrust.

Damien parried.

Then he stepped forward.

Aris retreated.

He did not chase immediately.

That surprised her.

Damien watched the rear foot.

She knew he watched it.

So she changed her step.

Instead of crossing, she used short shuffles.

Slower movement.

Better stability.

Damien’s opening disappeared.

Good adaptation.

Damien nodded as if thanking her for the information.

Then attacked anyway.

Straight thrust.

Aris parried.

Second toward hand.

She pulled back.

Third low.

She moved.

Damien continued.

Fourth.

Fifth.

He was making her defend.

Not chasing the spear.

Making her reposition.

Aris rotated.

Damien blocked the shaft.

Advanced.

Aris withdrew.

He kept the pressure.

For ten seconds she could not establish the broad circles she preferred.

Her long weapon needed space.

Damien was taking it.

Aris changed grip and used the butt end.

Short strike toward ribs.

Damien absorbed on armor.

Then she drove her shoulder into him.

Damien stumbled.

Space opened.

Aris immediately expanded the spear again.

Wide sweep.

Damien barely ducked.

She had recovered her preferred distance.

Kael smiled.

That’s good.

Victor looked over.

For who?

Both.

Victor stared at Kael.

You’ve become Darius.

Kael ignored him.

Aris’s response showed exactly why Damien’s close pressure was dangerous.

Damien’s failure to keep it showed what he still lacked.

The match continued.

At seven minutes, Aris found Damien’s hands.

She had been rotating near his forearms repeatedly.

Damien assumed she wanted to threaten the wrist.

Then she hooked the rear half of his spear.

Not the blade end.

The rear.

She pulled sharply.

Damien’s grip stretched.

His back hand slipped.

The spear twisted across his body.

Aris stepped in.

Her blade stopped against the side of his throat guard.

The judge rushed closer.

Decisive control?

Damien froze.

Then dropped his weight.

He released the trapped spear entirely.

Aris’s control had depended on the weapon connecting them.

The instant Damien let go, her pull carried his spear away.

She had blade at his throat.

But Damien was already moving inside.

He knocked the shaft upward with his forearm and collided with her shoulder.

The blade lifted.

Control broken.

Crowd roared.

Aris still had her spear.

Damien had nothing.

Bad.

Victor groaned.

Blackwood and weapons.

I told you.

Elias nodded.

Straps.

Damien moved immediately.

Not toward his spear.

Toward Aris.

That surprised Kael.

Aris tried creating range.

Damien followed barehanded.

If she could extend the weapon, he was finished.

She stepped backward.

Damien caught the shaft near the middle.

Aris twisted.

He let his grip slide rather than fighting.

Closed distance.

She kicked his thigh.

He absorbed.

He reached for her forearm.

Aris turned.

Spear butt struck Damien’s ribs.

He grunted.

Still close.

Aris attempted another thrust.

Impossible at that distance.

Damien trapped the weapon against his own side.

Dangerous.

He drove his shoulder into her.

Aris stepped back.

Damien used the movement to hook his foot behind hers.

Trip.

Aris fell to one knee.

Damien reached for the spear.

She released one hand and punched him across the jaw guard.

His head snapped sideways.

She stood.

He lost the grip.

Both separated.

Damien unarmed.

His spear six yards away.

Aris with weapon.

The crowd roared.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Aris could simply control distance now.

She knew.

Damien knew.

Seven minutes forty.

Score four-three Aris.

No boundary exits.

No decisive control.

Damien had a problem.

Aris lowered her spear point.

He raised empty hands.

Then smiled.

Aris frowned.

Why are you smiling?

Damien answered.

Because now I know what happens if I stop worrying about my spear.

Aris stared.

Then laughed.

All right.

Come find out.

She attacked.

Damien moved sideways.

No weapon meant less reach.

Also less weight.

He was faster.

Aris thrust.

He slipped outside.

Second.

Moved.

Sweep.

Duck.

He kept moving around her.

Not approaching the spear.

Approaching her feet.

The principle had become literal.

Aris rotated.

Damien stayed outside blade range.

Then she stepped.

Rear foot.

Damien rushed.

Aris expected him to go for his weapon.

He did not.

He entered directly.

The spear thrust came.

Damien slapped the shaft aside with both hands.

Aura flashed through his forearms.

Just enough.

He closed.

Aris tried reversing.

Too late.

Damien caught her weapon arm.

Turned.

Aris rotated with him instead of resisting.

Smart.

She used the turn to bring the spear butt toward his stomach.

Damien caught it against his hip.

Pain.

Held.

Now both had hands on the weapon.

Aris stronger through leverage.

Damien stronger physically.

He did not pull.

He shoved.

That changed everything.

Aris had expected contest toward herself.

The push forced her back.

One step.

Two.

She released the rear grip.

Damien’s hands moved with the shaft.

Aris pivoted away.

Damien suddenly owned the middle of her spear for half a second.

Not enough to steal it.

Enough to redirect.

He shoved the weapon aside and stepped past her.

Then ran.

Toward his spear.

Aris turned.

Too late.

Damien reached it.

Rolled.

Recovered the weapon.

The crowd erupted.

Victor stood.

YES.

Elias grabbed his coat.

Sit.

Victor looked down.

You’re injured.

Still capable of this.

Damien rose with spear.

Aris watched him.

Then nodded once.

Good recovery.

Damien breathed hard.

You almost had me.

Almost doesn’t advance.

There it was.

Tournament truth.

Eight minutes thirty.

Aris led four-three.

Damien had recovered his weapon.

Both were breathing harder.

Aris more than before.

That mattered.

Her style depended on constant movement.

Excellent endurance did not mean infinite endurance.

Damien saw it.

The rotations were slightly smaller.

Not slow.

Smaller.

Less unnecessary flourish.

More efficient.

She was conserving.

Damien advanced.

This time he did not wait for an opening.

He made one.

Thrust toward chest.

Aris parried.

Damien stepped forward.

Second thrust.

Blocked.

Third.

She moved.

Damien continued.

Fourth.

Aris tried rotating.

He struck the shaft near her hands.

The circle broke.

Damien advanced.

Fifth thrust.

Aris parried.

He kept pressure.

Victor leaned forward.

He’s doing Leon’s thing.

Marcus shook his head.

Different.

Leon made Cassel’s shield work.

Damien’s making Aris’s feet work.

Exactly.

Every retreat cost her.

Damien’s spear attacks were not all meant to score.

Some simply forced another step.

Aris moved left.

Damien followed.

Right.

Follow.

Back.

Follow.

She tried cutting around him.

Damien blocked.

Advanced again.

For almost twenty seconds Aris did not get to choose her preferred range.

Then Damien feinted thrust.

Aris stepped.

He stopped.

Her rear foot crossed.

There.

Damien struck low.

Not at the leg.

At the ground where she needed to place the next step.

Aris had to widen farther.

Her stance opened.

Damien thrust high.

Blade touched shoulder.

Scoring bell.

Four-four.

Blackwood erupted.

Damien withdrew one step.

Aris looked toward him.

You really are fighting my feet.

Damien smiled.

They’re losing.

She laughed despite herself.

Not yet.

Nine minutes.

Tie.

Three remaining.

The match became quieter.

Not because either slowed completely.

Because neither wanted to give away the next mistake.

Aris held the spear more conventionally now.

Less rotation.

Damien had made the rotations expensive.

Damien stayed middle distance.

Aris had made reckless entry dangerous.

Both had changed.

Good.

Aris thrust.

Damien parried.

No follow-up.

Damien attacked.

Aris moved.

Reset.

Again.

No score.

The crowd murmured.

Victor groaned softly.

Elias looked over.

You know what I’m going to say.

Thinking.

Yes.

I hate all of you.

Aris feinted.

Damien did not react.

Damien feinted.

Aris shifted only her front foot.

No commitment.

Then Aris attacked low.

Damien parried.

She rotated suddenly into a high slash.

He ducked.

Third action thrust.

Damien stepped inside.

Good.

Aris expected.

She shortened grip and drove the butt end toward his stomach.

Damien caught it with forearm.

Pain.

Kept moving.

He attacked with spear shaft toward her upper body.

Aris blocked.

Both weapons tangled.

Close range.

Damien stronger.

Aris better with leverage.

They wrestled.

Aris stepped outside Damien’s lead foot.

Tried turning him.

Damien dropped weight.

No movement.

She changed.

Instead of pulling, she shoved.

Same lesson Damien used earlier.

He stumbled.

Aris freed her weapon.

Blade came toward chest.

Damien parried late.

Spear tips crossed.

Aris twisted around his shaft.

Hook.

Damien anticipated.

Released rear hand.

Turned with the pressure.

Instead of losing the spear, he spun.

The movement brought his blade from the opposite side.

Aris’s eyes widened.

She barely ducked.

Damien completed the turn.

Thrust.

Aris stepped backward.

Heel touched boundary line but did not cross.

Damien pressed.

Another thrust.

She moved sideways.

He cut the angle.

Aris had one open route.

Damien recognized it.

Too clean.

He stopped.

Aris had expected pursuit.

Her counter sweep passed in front of him.

Empty.

Damien waited until the blade passed.

Then entered.

Thrust to chest.

Contact.

Scoring bell.

Five-four Damien.

Blackwood exploded.

Kael stood without realizing.

Two minutes.

Damien led.

Aris reset.

Now she had to chase.

That changed the entire geometry.

Aris attacked immediately.

No more conserving.

The spear began rotating again.

Fast.

Aura reinforced.

She moved forward.

Damien retreated carefully.

Not too far.

Aris swept high.

Block.

Low.

Move.

Thrust.

Parry.

She continued.

Damien gave ground.

One step.

Two.

Boundary still distant.

Aris increased pressure.

Damien blocked.

Her spear wrapped around his.

Hook.

He released one hand.

Recovered.

Another sweep.

He ducked.

Aris stepped forward.

Damien’s heel approached the outer third.

Kael frowned.

Don’t let her put you there.

Darius remained silent.

Aris thrust.

Damien parried.

She rotated.

He stepped sideways.

She followed.

Another.

He blocked.

One minute thirty.

Still five-four Damien.

Aris drove harder.

Damien’s arms were tiring.

The previous unarmed struggle had cost him.

Aris knew.

She targeted the hands again.

Hook.

Pull.

Damien held this time.

Mistake?

Aris yanked.

Damien’s grip stretched.

He used Aura.

Too much?

Maybe.

Kept weapon.

Aris changed direction instantly.

The pull became push.

Damien’s own resistance moved him backward.

One foot crossed boundary.

Horn.

First exit against Damien.

Score unchanged.

Five-four.

The crowd roared.

Damien stepped back in.

Aris smiled.

One.

He nodded.

One.

One minute.

Aris attacked immediately.

She wanted another boundary or score.

Damien moved toward center.

Aris cut him off.

Wide sweep.

He retreated.

Other side.

Blocked.

Forty-five seconds.

Aris feinted low.

Damien stayed.

High slash.

He parried.

She thrust.

He moved.

Thirty-five.

Damien could run the clock.

But Aris’s weapon controlled too much space for pure retreat.

She swept toward his legs.

Damien jumped back.

Bad.

He landed near boundary.

Aris rushed.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Twenty-five.

Aris thrust.

Damien parried.

She stepped inside and used shoulder pressure.

Damien’s heel neared line.

Second exit coming.

He planted.

Aura surged.

Not huge.

Enough to stop.

Aris smiled.

Expected.

She released pressure.

Damien nearly moved forward.

He caught himself.

Good.

Aris rotated blade toward his exposed side.

Damien ducked.

Fifteen.

He stepped inside.

Not away.

Aris tried shortening grip.

Damien trapped her spear under his arm.

Ten.

Both wrestled.

Aris pushed.

Damien turned.

Eight.

She tried stepping around.

Damien watched the feet.

Five.

Her rear foot crossed.

Damien hooked behind it with his own.

Three.

Aris lost balance.

Damien did not chase a strike.

He shoved.

Aris stumbled backward.

One.

Her foot crossed boundary.

Horn.

Final bell.

The arena erupted.

Both froze.

Score five-four Damien.

Boundary exits one each after that final horn?

The officials looked toward timing.

Did Aris cross before the final bell?

Close.

Very close.

Kael groaned.

Victor shouted.

WHY DOES EVERY BLACK DRAGON NEED A MEETING?

Elias laughed.

That was the loudest Kael had heard him since the loss.

The judges conferred.

Aris leaned on her spear, breathing hard.

Damien rested his own against one shoulder.

Neither spoke.

No need.

The scoreboard showed five-four Damien.

If Aris’s final boundary counted, one each overall.

If it did not, Damien alone had one exit.

Either way, contact score favored Damien.

But Aris had controlled more early space.

Damien controlled the later phase.

Decision still likely his.

Formal process mattered.

Grand Herald Ken received the slate.

The Coliseum settled.

Final boundary exit against Dame Aris Valenne is confirmed before the bell.

The crowd reacted.

One boundary each.

Ken continued.

Winner by decision—

Sir Damien Ravenmoor of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Blackwood erupted.

Damien lowered his head once.

Relief.

Then Aris extended her spear horizontally.

Not threatening.

A formal spear-fighter’s acknowledgment.

Damien placed his own weapon against it.

Shaft to shaft.

Aris smiled.

You watched my feet too much.

Damien answered.

They talked too loudly.

You nearly lost your spear because of it.

I did lose it.

Fair.

She looked toward him.

Next time, watch the shoulders too.

Damien smiled.

Next time, stop teaching me.

Aris laughed.

Then win faster.

They separated.

Darius waited in the corridor.

Of course.

Victor reached it before Damien did.

Sir, I already know the question.

Darius looked at him.

Do you?

Why did Damien win?

Darius stared.

Victor smiled proudly.

Darius turned toward Damien.

Why did you win?

Victor looked offended.

Damien took a breath.

I stopped reacting to the weapon and started reacting to the movement that made the weapon useful.

Yes.

I forced her to spend more steps in the second half.

Yes.

I kept pressure when she couldn’t establish rotation.

Yes.

Darius waited.

Damien frowned.

I gave her too much distance early.

Yes.

I let the hook take my spear because I was thinking about the blade instead of the rear half of the weapon.

Yes.

I spent too much Aura once when she tried pulling me toward boundary.

Yes.

Damien looked toward the arena behind him.

The last exchange?

Darius asked.

I used the rear-foot cross again.

You relied on a known habit.

Damien nodded.

Risky.

Why?

She could’ve changed it.

Exactly.

Darius stepped closer.

You won because you made her style expensive.

Damien listened.

Not because rotational fighting is weak.

Not because her Aura was lower.

You forced her to move more than she wanted and denied the space her weapon required.

Then when she changed, you changed again.

Damien nodded.

Darius continued.

But you nearly lost because once you believed you had solved the feet, you started treating the solution like certainty.

Kael felt the line connect instantly to Elias.

Observation.

Certainty.

Pattern.

The same concepts appeared differently for everyone.

Damien nodded slowly.

So I did what Elias did.

Elias, from the bench nearby, raised an eyebrow.

Darius answered.

No.

You made Damien’s mistake.

Elias almost smiled.

Good distinction.

Darius looked toward him.

Do not encourage me.

Then back to Damien.

Every fighter has recurring habits.

That does not mean the habit is obligated to remain when you notice it.

Damien nodded.

Fight the person now.

Yes.

Darius gave one approving nod.

Good fight.

Victor slapped Marcus’s arm.

Four.

Marcus looked over.

Stop counting.

Never.

Damien finally smiled.

Thank you, Sir.

The bracket updated.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor — ADVANCES TO SPEAR QUARTERFINALS

That changed the mood.

Kael stared at the line longer than he expected.

Quarterfinals.

Eight spear fighters remained.

Damien had entered Aurelia as a newly recognized Imperial Knight with a calm command style, solid spear work, and a minor noble surname whose best years belonged to older generations.

Now he stood three victories from the final.

Not three easy victories.

Nothing from here would be easy.

But close enough that the shape of the tournament had changed around him.

A House representative approached before Damien had finished removing his gauntlets.

Not Cassian.

Not Seraphine.

Not even one of the major Houses Kael expected.

The woman wore the white-and-red insignia of Duchess Celene Morcant.

She bowed.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor?

Damien looked toward Kael reflexively.

Kael raised both hands.

Damien sighed.

You’re enjoying that.

Very much.

He turned back.

Yes.

The representative smiled.

Her Grace would like to speak with you during the Imperial Ball regarding frontier command doctrine and House service.

Damien’s expression became unreadable.

House service?

A conversation only.

No contract is being placed before you today.

Good.

Damien nodded.

Then yes. I’ll speak with her.

The representative bowed and left.

Victor stared after her.

Frontier command doctrine?

Damien looked over.

What?

People invite me to drink.

That’s because nobody trusts you with doctrine.

Mira laughed behind them.

Victor pointed.

You are still stealing food.

Mira bit into the pastry.

Prove it.

Kael looked toward the brackets again.

Marcus advanced.

Leon advanced to the Round of Sixteen.

Damien advanced to the spear quarterfinals.

Victor’s next match against Sir Tavric Dorn waited after his rest day.

Mira remained alive in the swordsman bracket.

Edric continued under House Varrow.

Elias and Brennar were out, but neither had disappeared from Aurelia’s attention.

The tournament was doing exactly what Marquis Oren had warned Kael about.

Winning mattered.

Losing mattered.

How someone handled both mattered more than Kael had understood.

Darius stopped beside him.

You’re thinking.

Kael glanced over.

Apparently that’s dangerous too.

Often.

Kael looked toward Damien accepting congratulations from Leon, who had finally returned from the healer.

They’re getting offers faster.

Yes.

And the farther they go—

The more serious the offers become.

Kael nodded.

At some point someone is going to offer something Blackwood can’t match.

Of course.

Kael looked toward Darius.

You say that very calmly.

Because it is true.

Land.

Money.

Command.

Marriage.

Access to better training.

A place near the center of Imperial power.

Blackwood was growing, but it was still Blackwood.

A developing territory.

A young House.

Fifty founding soldiers.

Not one of the great powers.

Kael folded his arms.

And your answer is still let them choose.

Yes.

Even if a quarter of them leave?

Darius looked toward him.

If a quarter of your people receive better futures because Blackwood helped them become visible, that is not automatically failure.

Kael became quiet.

Darius continued.

Your job is not to make them dependent on you.

It is to build something good enough that capable people choose to stay when they have options.

The words landed harder now than they had after Marcus’s fight.

At first, Kael had thought recruitment meant finding talent.

Then training meant improving it.

Now Aurelia was teaching him the final problem.

Talent gained value.

Value created alternatives.

A House that developed people had to survive the possibility that those people would become wanted elsewhere.

Kael looked toward the black-and-silver armbands moving through the corridor.

Then I need Blackwood to become a place people want, not a place they need.

Darius nodded.

Better.

Kael sighed.

There it is again.

Darius walked away.

Kael watched him go.

Aurelia really had ruined all of them.

The afternoon matches continued inside the Coliseum while the brackets narrowed another line at a time. By nightfall, someone else would be eliminated. Someone else would become interesting to a House that had never known their name a week earlier. Someone else would discover that the weakness Darius had been criticizing for months looked considerably less theoretical when an opponent punished it in front of thousands.

And somewhere beyond tomorrow’s matches waited the Imperial Ball.

Kael was beginning to suspect that surviving the tournament might be simpler.
