Victor Ravenshade woke before Sir Darius could wake him.

That alone made Kael suspicious.

The sky beyond the House Kael residence was still dark when Victor entered the dining room already dressed in his tournament clothes.

Black Dragon colors.

Light armor.

Sword belt.

Hair tied back.

No apple.

No joke.

No complaint.

Kael sat at the far end of the table with a cup of tea.

Victor stopped.

You’re awake.

Kael looked at him.

So are you.

Victor glanced toward the window.

Couldn’t sleep.

Kael smiled faintly.

Yesterday you lied about sleeping.

Today I’m improving.

Good.

Victor sat.

Breakfast waited in front of him.

Eggs.

Bread.

Fruit.

He stared at it.

Kael watched.

Eat.

I’m trying.

Your opponent isn’t hiding in the bread.

Victor looked down.

Might be easier if he was.

Kael laughed quietly.

For three days, the Imperial Knight Examination had tested Victor’s judgment.

Today nothing complicated stood between him and the result.

No civilian.

No conflicting order.

No hidden law.

No simulated wounded teammate.

One opponent.

One arena.

Win and advance.

Lose and his Coliseum Championship ended immediately.

Victor looked toward Kael.

My lord.

Yes?

Did you ever fight in a tournament?

Not like this.

Would you be nervous?

Yes.

Victor seemed surprised.

Really?

Kael looked at him.

Four Imperial Shields, my entire family, half the Empire’s nobility, thousands of people, and a bracket that permanently records the result?

Victor nodded.

When you say it like that, I feel much better.

Glad I could help.

Victor finally took a bite.

Darius entered several minutes later.

He looked at Victor.

Then at the empty half of Victor’s plate.

Eat more.

Victor sighed.

Kael smiled.

Darius sat.

No speech.

No dramatic encouragement.

Victor waited anyway.

Darius poured water.

Victor finally asked.

That’s it?

Darius looked at him.

What?

You’re not going to tell me anything?

We spoke last night.

Yes.

About Halden Pryce.

Correct.

Victor leaned forward.

This morning is different.

How?

I’m fighting today.

Darius stared.

You were fighting yesterday too.

Not like this.

Darius put down the cup.

Fine.

Victor straightened.

Darius said:

Do not lose.

Victor stared.

Kael nearly choked on his tea.

That’s your advice?

Victor asked.

Yes.

Terrible.

You requested advice.

Victor looked toward Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

This is your teacher.

Unfortunately.

Darius’s face remained unchanged.

Then his tone shifted.

You want something useful?

Victor nodded.

Stop trying to imagine the entire fight.

Victor became quiet.

Darius continued.

You know Halden uses a shorter sword and buckler.

You know he prefers to counter.

You know his Aura control is cleaner than yours.

You know he has fought under House Serrane for six years.

Everything else happens after the bell.

Victor nodded.

Darius pointed at him.

Your weakness today will not be recklessness.

Victor blinked.

What?

Kael leaned forward.

Darius continued.

You’ve spent weeks being told not to chase.

Not to rush.

Not to seek glory.

Now you are at risk of becoming too cautious because you are afraid of becoming the old Victor again.

That landed.

Victor looked toward the table.

Darius continued.

Growth is not replacing one bad habit with its opposite.

Your aggression is useful.

Your creativity is useful.

Your speed is useful.

Control them.

Do not bury them.

Victor slowly nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Darius stood.

And eat.

Victor looked at the food.

Of course.

The streets around the Imperial Coliseum were louder than any previous morning.

The examination had become a tournament.

Aurelia understood the difference immediately.

Vendors sold bracket sheets.

Children wore cheap wooden versions of the Golden Laurel.

House colors filled the avenue.

Arguments about matchups had begun before sunrise.

Kael heard one man insist Victor Ravenshade would lose in under three minutes.

Victor heard him too.

He stopped.

Kael grabbed the back of his cloak.

Keep walking.

But—

Darius spoke without looking back.

Bookmakers profit from fools.

Victor resumed walking.

The man in the crowd shouted again.

Pryce in three!

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Kael leaned closer.

Now you understand why Darius banned betting odds.

Victor nodded.

I still want to hit him.

The spectator?

Yes.

That would probably fail some other examination.

Fair.

They continued.

The Swordsman and Knight Division occupied the main Coliseum floor that morning.

Sixty-four names remained on the bracket.

Thirty-two opening-round fights.

Eight would be fought before noon.

Eight more through afternoon.

The rest spread into the following morning.

Not every bout would receive the same ceremonial attention.

But every result would enter the Imperial bracket.

Victor was Match Three.

Kael entered the sponsor section with Lily and Edwin.

Darius went below toward the Shield platform.

Sir Corren and Sir Maelin occupied examiner seating.

The Imperial family had begun arriving.

Cassian.

Elena.

Marcus Asterion.

Elara.

Seraphine.

Other heirs.

Emperor Augustus had not yet appeared.

Kael noticed.

Lily asked quietly.

Does he attend every opening-round fight?

No idea.

Edwin answered.

Not usually.

Kael looked at him.

You know?

The Emperor’s schedule is rarely spent watching thirty-two first-round matches unless a candidate of particular interest is involved.

Kael’s eyes shifted toward the bracket.

Interesting.

The first fight lasted six minutes.

A House Velmire swordsman against an independent former mercenary.

Kael had intended to watch casually.

That ended quickly.

The independent fighter, Sir Davren Ko, used a long saber and almost no visible Aura.

The Velmire candidate, Sir Pell Orsin, had a conventional longsword and much stronger reinforcement.

On paper, Pell should have dominated.

For the first minute, he did.

Heavy strikes.

Center control.

Clean footwork.

Davren gave ground repeatedly.

The crowd began assuming the result.

Kael almost did too.

Then Davren changed his stance.

Lower.

Blade angled behind his hip.

Darius, seated below, leaned forward slightly.

Kael noticed.

Pell attacked again.

Davren did not block.

He slipped outside.

Saber cut lightly across Pell’s shoulder guard.

First scored contact.

Not enough to end the bout.

But enough to change it.

Pell became more aggressive.

Davren wanted that.

He made Pell turn.

Again.

Forced his armored feet through wider circles.

By the fourth minute, Pell’s breathing had changed.

Kael understood.

Armor.

Weight.

Aura reinforcement.

Davren had been spending less.

Then Pell committed to a downward strike.

Davren stepped inward.

Too close for the longsword’s preferred arc.

His saber hand reversed.

Pommel struck Pell’s jaw guard.

Leg swept.

Pell hit the sand.

Davren’s blade stopped at his throat.

Match.

The Coliseum erupted.

Independent victory.

Kael leaned toward Lily.

Marquis Oren was right.

About?

Watch who nobles speak to after a loss.

Kael looked toward Davren.

Then Pell.

House Velmire attendants immediately approached Pell.

But across the noble section, three different aides had already started writing Davren’s name.

Scouting.

Even in the first fight.

This tournament changed lives quickly.

Match Two ended faster.

Two-and-a-half minutes.

A young knight under House Avenor overwhelmed an older provincial candidate with superior speed and reach.

No trick.

No dramatic reversal.

One fighter was simply better prepared for that matchup.

Darius had said the stronger attribute did not always win.

He had not said it never did.

Good.

The bracket advanced.

Two names moved.

Then Grand Herald Ken called:

Match Three.

Sir Victor Ravenshade of House Kael, Black Dragon.

The Blackwood section stood.

Victor entered through the western gate.

Kael saw him emerge beneath the sunlight.

Black and silver.

Longsword.

No shield.

His new Imperial knight insignia fixed at his chest.

Not gold.

Silver.

For now.

The Coliseum reaction was mixed.

Some cheers.

Some curious murmurs.

House Kael remained new enough that not everyone recognized the banner.

But Sir Darius’s association had already made people interested.

Victor walked toward the center.

His face looked calm.

Kael knew better.

Across the arena, the eastern gate opened.

Sir Halden Pryce entered beneath House Serrane’s silver crescent.

Twenty-eight.

Dark hair cut close.

Lean build.

Not especially tall.

Left arm carried a round buckler only slightly wider than his forearm.

Right hand held a short arming sword.

Light mail beneath dark blue leather.

No wasted ornament.

Countess Aveline Serrane watched from the noble tier.

She did not cheer.

She observed.

Halden reached center.

Victor stopped opposite him.

The difference in weapons was obvious.

Victor had reach.

Halden had compact defense.

Darius’s profile had described him accurately.

Counterfighter.

Kael looked down.

How would Victor attack?

That was the entire problem.

The arena judge stepped between them.

Victory conditions:

Submission.

Disarm followed by clear control.

Incapacitation.

Judge stoppage.

Leaving the marked boundary three times.

No lethal attacks after an opponent is defenseless.

No deliberate strikes to the back of the skull.

No uncontrolled killing technique.

Aura permitted within registered limits.

The judge looked at both.

Understood?

Victor nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Halden answered.

Yes.

The judge stepped away.

The bell rang.

Victor moved first.

Of course.

But not recklessly.

Two measured steps.

Sword high.

Halden remained near center.

Buckler forward.

Blade low.

Victor feinted a shoulder cut.

Halden did nothing.

Victor changed to the thigh.

Buckler dropped.

Metal struck metal.

Victor recovered.

Halden countered instantly.

Short sword thrust toward ribs.

Victor twisted.

Missed by inches.

There.

The entire exchange took less than two seconds.

Kael leaned forward.

Fast.

Sir Corren, seated below the sponsor tier, glanced back.

Pryce waits for commitment.

Exactly as expected.

Victor circled.

Halden did not chase.

Kael could see the trap.

Victor had longer reach.

But every attack opened a window for the shorter sword to enter.

Victor tested with another cut.

This time Halden’s buckler did not merely block.

It punched Victor’s blade outward.

The short sword followed toward Victor’s exposed wrist.

Victor jerked back.

Too slow.

Blade edge scraped his gauntlet.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

House Serrane’s section cheered.

Victor looked at his wrist.

No injury.

But message received.

Halden smiled faintly.

Come on.

Victor’s expression changed.

Kael knew that face.

Old Victor wanted to answer.

Darius did not move.

Victor took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Good.

Thirty seconds passed.

No attack.

Crowd began murmuring.

Victor circled.

Halden stayed center.

One minute.

Nothing.

Then Halden spoke.

Afraid?

Victor smiled.

A little.

The crowd laughed.

Halden’s eyebrow rose.

Victor continued circling.

That wasn’t expected.

Halden wanted irritation.

Victor gave honesty.

Interesting.

Then Victor suddenly accelerated.

Not a strike.

A footwork burst.

He closed two steps, forced Halden’s buckler up with a high feint, then kicked sand toward his front foot.

Not face.

Foot.

Halden shifted instinctively.

Victor’s real cut came low from the opposite angle.

Halden caught it.

Barely.

Buckler edge struck Victor’s blade.

But his stance had moved.

Victor continued pressure.

Second cut.

Third.

Halden retreated one step.

First time.

Kael smiled.

Victor had changed the question.

Not can I beat the buckler?

Can I make the buckler move where I want?

Halden countered.

Short sword flashed inside.

Victor pulled his elbow back.

Blade missed his ribs.

But Halden’s buckler slammed into Victor’s chest.

Victor stumbled.

Crowd roared.

Halden advanced for the first time.

There.

Counterfighter became aggressor.

Victor had wanted movement.

Now he had too much.

Halden’s sword came fast.

Short horizontal cut.

Victor blocked.

Second thrust.

Victor parried.

Third.

Buckler struck Victor’s blade and pinned it briefly against his own chest line.

Halden thrust toward shoulder.

Victor twisted.

Blade scraped armor.

Second scoring contact.

Victor retreated.

Halden stopped.

Did not chase farther.

Smart.

Back to center.

Kael frowned.

He’s controlling the entire fight.

Darius’s voice came from below without looking up.

So far.

Kael smiled faintly.

Victor breathed.

He looked less nervous now.

Strangely.

The first exchanges had hurt him.

But they had also made the fight real.

No more imagining.

One man.

One problem.

He raised his sword.

Then changed grip slightly.

Darius noticed.

Halden did too.

Victor began attacking with smaller movements.

No broad cuts.

Short jabs.

Half-cuts.

Touches designed to occupy the buckler.

Halden blocked the first.

Second.

Third.

Victor withdrew before the counter.

Again.

Halden blocked.

Victor withdrew.

Again.

The crowd began booing lightly.

Not everyone.

People wanted violence.

Victor did not care.

That mattered.

Halden’s expression changed.

He could not counter if Victor refused to stay committed.

Kael saw it.

Victor was learning his rhythm.

Then Halden changed.

Instead of waiting for Victor to retreat, he stepped forward during the third half-cut.

Buckler trapped Victor’s blade.

Short sword lunged.

Victor released one hand from his longsword.

Caught Halden’s sword wrist.

Dangerous.

Close range.

Halden slammed buckler into Victor’s forearm.

Victor lost grip.

Halden’s blade cut across Victor’s side armor.

This time harder.

Victor hissed.

Blood?

Kael stood.

No.

Armor split.

Skin maybe cut underneath.

Victor shoved away.

Judge watched.

No stoppage.

Halden reset.

Victor touched his side.

Fingers came back red.

Small.

Enough.

The Coliseum reacted louder.

First actual blood of the match.

Victor looked at it.

Then smiled.

Halden frowned.

Kael knew immediately that smile was dangerous.

Darius called from the Shield platform.

Ravenshade!

Victor’s head turned slightly.

Not toward Darius.

Enough to hear.

Darius said:

Think.

One word.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Good.

The next two minutes became slower.

Much slower.

Victor stopped trying to win exchanges.

He started studying Halden’s feet.

Kael noticed after the third circle.

Every time Halden blocked high with the buckler, his left foot planted hard.

Every time he countered low, his right shoulder dipped first.

Every time Victor retreated two steps, Halden reset center rather than follow.

Patterns.

Victor was not Elias.

But anyone could learn.

Victor feinted high.

Halden planted left foot.

Victor withdrew.

Again.

Same.

Third time.

Victor attacked high harder.

Halden planted.

Buckler rose.

Victor did not strike the shield.

He changed direction midway.

Sword tip dropped.

Not toward leg.

Toward buckler rim.

The longsword caught the outer edge and shoved outward.

Because Halden’s left foot was planted, his upper body twisted farther than his base wanted.

Victor stepped inside.

Pommel toward jaw.

Halden reacted fast.

Short sword crossguard blocked.

But now they were chest to chest.

Victor’s longer sword was disadvantaged.

Halden smiled.

His preferred range.

He drove forward.

Victor let him.

Kael frowned.

Then Victor stepped backward deliberately.

Halden followed.

One step.

Victor gave another.

Halden’s instincts shifted.

Pressure.

Victor looked vulnerable.

Third step.

Halden committed.

Short sword thrust.

Victor had been waiting.

His rear foot planted against the arena boundary ridge.

Not trapped.

Anchored.

He pivoted.

Halden’s thrust passed beside him.

Victor’s left hand caught Halden’s buckler wrist.

Not sword wrist.

Buckler.

He yanked forward while turning.

Halden’s own momentum carried him past.

Victor kicked behind his knee.

Halden dropped.

The crowd erupted.

Victor brought longsword down.

Halden rolled.

Blade struck sand.

Halden scrambled.

Victor attacked.

For the first time, Halden had no center.

No stable defense.

Victor pressed.

One cut.

Buckler block.

Second.

Halden retreated.

Third.

Sword block.

Fourth.

Victor feinted high, cut low.

Blade struck Halden’s thigh armor.

Scoring bell.

Victor finally landed.

Blackwood erupted.

Victor heard.

Kael knew he did.

But he did not look.

Good.

Halden’s face hardened.

The smile vanished.

Now both had learned something.

Victor could adapt.

Halden could bleed points too.

The fight entered its fifth minute.

Longer than many opening matches.

The crowd became invested.

Even people with no House connection had started choosing sides.

Victor’s movement looked looser now.

Halden’s tighter.

Darius watched without expression.

Kael leaned over.

Who is winning?

Sir Corren answered from below.

On scored contacts?

Pryce.

Two meaningful touches to one.

But this isn’t point victory unless judges stop for safety or time expires.

How much time?

Opening-round maximum twelve minutes.

Then?

If no decisive result, judges award based on control, effective strikes, ring command, and combat quality.

Kael looked at the arena clock.

Five minutes twenty seconds.

Plenty.

Or not.

Halden changed tactics completely.

He advanced.

Not wild.

Methodical.

Buckler high.

Short sword close.

Victor tried maintaining range.

Halden cut the angle.

Victor moved left.

Halden matched.

Right.

Matched.

He was herding Victor toward the boundary.

Kael saw it.

Victor did too.

But stopping it meant engaging.

Halden wanted that.

Victor’s heel touched the outer line.

First warning horn.

Not out yet.

One step more.

Victor attacked hard.

Halden buckler-blocked.

Victor tried pivoting.

Halden’s shoulder crashed into him.

Victor stepped outside.

Boundary horn.

One ring-out.

Crowd roared.

Victor immediately returned.

Two more ring-outs and loss?

Kael asked.

Yes.

Darius answered.

Halden had found another path.

He did not need to disarm Victor.

Just remove his space.

Victor reset.

Breathing heavier.

Side wound starting to stain the inner cloth.

Not serious.

Annoying.

Halden advanced again.

Victor tried feinting.

Halden ignored.

Buckler pressure.

Step.

Victor circled.

Halden cut him off.

This time Victor attacked the legs.

Halden lowered buckler.

Sword counter flashed.

Victor withdrew.

Still being pushed.

Darius’s face changed slightly.

Kael noticed.

What?

Nothing.

That’s not nothing.

Darius answered quietly.

Victor is reacting to pressure instead of creating it.

Kael looked.

Exactly.

Victor had become too cautious.

The warning from breakfast.

Growth turning into the opposite flaw.

Halden drove him toward the line again.

Victor looked behind himself once.

Bad.

Halden saw.

Charged.

Victor had nowhere.

Then—

Victor stepped outside voluntarily.

Boundary horn.

Second ring-out.

The Coliseum exploded.

Kael stood.

What is he doing?

Darius’s eyes sharpened.

Victor stepped back into the ring.

Two ring-outs.

One more meant elimination.

Halden smiled.

Now you have nowhere left.

Victor looked at him.

Exactly.

Kael froze.

Darius’s expression shifted.

There.

Victor had removed the choice.

He could no longer keep retreating.

Not because Darius told him.

Because Victor had forced himself to stop.

Risky.

Maybe stupid.

Maybe brilliant.

Halden believed he had trapped him mentally.

Victor had trapped himself intentionally.

Now aggression became necessary.

Bell resumed.

Victor attacked before Halden settled.

Not reckless.

Fast.

Real.

Longsword cut from right.

Halden blocked.

Victor recovered instantly.

Left.

Blocked.

Thrust.

Buckler diverted.

Victor did not retreat.

Halden countered.

Victor took the strike on his shoulder guard.

Pain.

But stayed inside.

His longsword hilt smashed against Halden’s buckler.

Again.

Not blade.

Hilt.

He was attacking the shield itself.

Halden frowned.

Victor drove him backward.

For the first time all match, Halden lost two consecutive steps.

Then three.

House Serrane’s section went quiet.

Victor’s Aura appeared.

Moderate.

Uneven.

But controlled enough.

Not through the entire body.

Legs and forearms.

Darius noticed.

Victor accelerated.

Halden’s buckler rose.

Victor changed.

Instead of striking, he grabbed the buckler rim with his left hand.

Halden stabbed.

Victor twisted sideways.

Blade grazed his ribs.

Victor grunted.

Kept hold.

Then used the longsword’s crossguard like a hook behind Halden’s sword wrist.

Two weapons tangled.

Ugly.

Close.

Not textbook.

Victor’s kind of fight.

Halden tried kneeing him.

Victor took it on thigh.

Pain.

Then Victor drove his forehead into Halden’s brow guard.

Not prohibited.

Metal cracked against metal.

Both staggered.

Crowd roared.

Darius sighed.

Kael smiled.

There he is.

Halden recovered faster.

Short sword slashed.

Victor barely blocked.

Halden buckler-punched.

Victor’s nose split.

Blood.

Victor smiled again.

This time Darius did not shout.

Because Victor’s eyes remained focused.

He was enjoying the fight.

Not losing himself to it.

Important difference.

Halden thrust.

Victor parried outward.

Then intentionally let his longsword slide down Halden’s blade.

Metal screamed.

Halden prepared buckler counter.

Victor’s left hand dropped.

Grabbed the bottom of Halden’s buckler.

Pulled downward.

Halden resisted.

Exactly what Victor wanted.

Both arms occupied.

Victor stepped on Halden’s forward boot.

Pinned it for one heartbeat.

Then twisted his whole body.

Halden’s planted foot could not adjust.

Balance broke.

Victor released buckler.

Shoulder drove into Halden’s chest.

Halden fell backward.

His short sword remained in hand.

Victor followed.

Halden rolled.

Victor did not swing.

He kicked the sword wrist.

Once.

Halden retained.

Second kick.

Sword loosened.

Halden punched with buckler.

Caught Victor’s knee.

Victor stumbled.

Halden tried standing.

Victor’s longsword came down vertically.

Halden lifted buckler.

The impact rang through the Coliseum.

Victor used the rebound.

Instead of resetting, he rotated the blade sideways and slammed the flat against Halden’s sword hand.

Short sword dropped.

The crowd erupted.

Disarm.

Not enough alone.

Halden still had buckler.

He lunged for the weapon.

Victor remembered.

Do not chase the target.

Control the situation.

He did not rush for Halden.

He stepped on the short sword.

Covered it.

Halden stopped.

One weapon gone.

Victor between him and retrieval.

Halden raised buckler.

Could still fight.

The judge did not stop.

Good.

Halden attacked unarmed.

Buckler jab.

Victor retreated one step.

Not outside.

Never again.

Second jab.

Victor parried with blade flat.

Third.

Victor sidestepped.

Halden tried closing.

Victor now had every advantage.

Reach.

Weapon.

Space.

But Halden remained dangerous.

Kael saw the temptation.

Finish dramatically.

Victor saw it too.

Instead he did something disappointingly smart.

He maintained distance.

Touched Halden’s shoulder with blade tip.

Halden swatted.

Victor moved.

Touched thigh.

Moved.

Halden charged.

Victor stepped aside and cut lightly across the back of Halden’s armor.

The judge shouted warning for positional control.

Halden turned.

Breathing hard.

Victor waited.

No rush.

No glory.

Just advantage.

Darius’s eyes narrowed approvingly.

Kael smiled.

The fight was almost over.

Then Halden did something desperate.

He threw the buckler.

Not at Victor.

At the longsword.

Victor instinctively blocked.

Metal struck blade.

Halden rushed underneath.

Tackled Victor.

Both hit sand.

The Coliseum exploded.

Now sword advantage vanished again.

Victor’s longsword skidded away.

Both unarmed.

Halden mounted partially.

Punch.

Victor blocked.

Second.

Hit cheek.

Victor bridged hips.

Halden shifted.

Good grappling.

Victor tried rolling.

Halden followed.

Buckler gone.

Sword gone.

Pure body.

Halden’s experience showed.

He trapped Victor’s right arm.

Kael frowned.

Victor’s losing.

Darius said nothing.

Halden moved toward choke control.

Victor’s left hand searched sand.

Nothing.

No weapon.

No trick.

He stopped searching.

Good.

He used his legs.

Hooked Halden’s ankle.

Shifted hips.

Created space.

Halden tightened.

Victor could not overpower him directly.

So he stopped trying.

He remembered something else from training.

Movement.

Not force.

He allowed Halden to pull the trapped arm across.

Then rolled with the direction instead of resisting.

Halden’s balance moved too far.

Victor turned beneath him.

Both reversed.

Victor came up sideways.

Not dominant.

Enough.

He grabbed Halden’s forearm.

Halden punched.

Victor took it.

Again.

Then trapped wrist against chest.

Halden tried standing.

Victor let him.

Both rose tangled.

Halden thought separation meant freedom.

Victor hooked his leg behind Halden’s knee.

Same mistake Darius had punished Kael with repeatedly.

Sweep.

Halden hit sand.

Victor dropped knee beside the shoulder.

Twisted arm.

Not enough to break.

Enough to control.

Halden still fought.

Victor tightened.

Judge watched.

Halden’s free hand slapped sand once.

Submission.

Bell.

For half a second, Victor did not understand.

Then the Coliseum detonated.

Sir Victor Ravenshade had won.

Kael stood.

Lily stood beside him.

Edwin applauded.

House Kael’s small section sounded much larger than it was.

Victor released Halden immediately.

That mattered.

Then offered his hand.

Halden stared at it.

For one second, Kael wondered whether pride would win.

Halden took it.

Victor pulled him up.

Both bloodied.

Both breathing hard.

Halden looked at Victor.

You stepped out on purpose.

Victor smiled.

Second time.

Why?

Victor looked toward Darius.

Then back.

Because I was becoming afraid to attack.

Halden stared.

Then laughed.

That is stupid.

Probably.

It worked.

Barely.

They clasped forearms.

Respect.

Countess Aveline Serrane stood in her section.

No anger.

She applauded once.

Then again.

Her candidate had lost.

But not disgracefully.

Important.

The bracket board changed.

Sir Victor Ravenshade — ADVANCES

The line moved.

His name entered the Round of 32.

The Black Dragon insignia moved with it.

Victor looked up at the board.

Kael saw it on his face.

The realization.

One win.

Not championship.

Not Golden Laurel.

One line.

One step.

Darius entered the arena after the judge released them.

Victor turned.

Sir.

Darius looked at his face.

Nose bleeding.

Side cut.

Bruised thigh.

You look terrible.

Victor smiled.

I won.

Yes.

Silence.

Victor waited.

Darius stared.

Then:

Good.

Victor froze.

Kael laughed from the stands.

Actual praise.

Marcus, waiting in the candidate section for the next day’s fight, shouted:

Write it down!

Leon laughed.

Even Elias smiled.

Darius ignored everyone.

Then looked at Victor.

You also deliberately stepped outside the ring for your second penalty.

Victor’s smile weakened.

Yes.

Dangerous.

Yes.

Potentially stupid.

Yes.

Why did you do it?

Victor answered.

Because I was fighting scared.

Darius nodded.

Correct diagnosis.

Bad medicine.

Victor sighed.

Of course.

Darius continued.

A better fighter would have recognized what you were doing and forced the third ring-out before you reset.

Victor nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Your close-range entry in minute three was sloppy.

Yes.

You let him cut your side because you grabbed the sword wrist too early.

Yes.

Your final ground reversal was acceptable.

Victor’s eyebrows rose.

Acceptable?

Do not ruin it.

Victor smiled.

Then Darius stepped closer.

But you did something important.

Victor became quiet.

You used your aggression without letting it decide everything for you.

Victor’s expression changed.

Darius continued.

That is why you won.

Not because you stopped being reckless.

Because you finally learned when recklessness becomes pressure and when it becomes stupidity.

Victor nodded slowly.

Yes, Sir.

Darius looked toward the healer station.

Go.

Victor started walking.

Then turned.

Sir.

What?

Who do I fight next?

Darius stared.

Victor grinned.

Had to ask.

Healer.

Now.

Victor left.

Kael met Victor outside the healer chamber forty minutes later.

Julian was not there to terrorize him.

Aurelia’s Coliseum healers were.

One had cleaned the side cut.

Another reset Victor’s nose.

He looked worse.

Kael leaned against the wall.

Congratulations.

Victor smiled.

Thank you, my lord.

How’s it feel?

Like Halden hit me with a building.

Kael laughed.

Victor looked toward the bracket corridor.

I advanced.

Yes.

One line.

Yes.

Victor’s smile became smaller.

I thought it would feel bigger.

Kael understood.

Maybe after six.

Victor looked at him.

Six?

Wins.

You need six to take the division.

Victor’s expression flattened.

Why would you remind me?

Because Darius isn’t here.

Cruel.

Kael smiled.

Victor looked down at his new knight insignia.

Then touched the bandage at his side.

I almost lost.

Yes.

More than once.

Yes.

Victor stared.

You are terrible at encouragement too.

I’ve been learning from Darius.

That explains it.

Then footsteps approached.

Sir Halden Pryce.

Fresh bandage across his brow.

No sword.

He stopped.

Victor straightened.

Halden looked toward Kael.

Lord Kael.

Sir Halden.

Then toward Victor.

Countess Serrane wants to speak with you later.

Victor blinked.

Me?

Halden smiled faintly.

You beat one of her household knights in the Imperial Coliseum.

She prefers knowing why.

Victor looked toward Kael.

Kael remembered Marquis Oren.

Watch who nobles speak to after a loss.

Interesting.

Halden continued.

Not recruitment.

Probably.

Victor frowned.

That word is doing a lot of work.

Kael smiled.

Welcome to Aurelia.

Halden extended his hand.

Victor took it.

Then Halden left.

Victor stared after him.

I won one fight and now a Countess wants to talk to me.

Kael nodded.

Darius warned you.

Winning makes life complicated.

Victor looked toward the Hall of Brackets.

Then smiled.

I’ll survive.

Kael looked at the bloodied bandage.

You barely survived Halden.

Victor laughed.

Fair.

The Coliseum continued without them.

Leon Ashford’s fight was approaching.

His opponent:

Sir Joren Pellaris.

Independent.

Former caravan guard.

Twenty-nine.

Second attempt at knighthood.

Failed three years ago for weapon fundamentals.

Returned.

Passed.

Now standing in the Round of 64.

Kael returned to the sponsor tier as Leon entered the candidate preparation corridor.

Darius already had Joren’s public record spread across a table.

Leon stood across from him.

Calm.

Too calm.

Kael entered.

Victor win?

Leon asked.

Yes.

Leon smiled.

Good.

Darius looked up.

Forget Victor.

Leon nodded.

One man.

One fight.

Darius pointed to the record.

Joren Pellaris.

Longsword.

No House training.

Caravan combat.

Bandit defense.

Monster escort.

Low-to-moderate Aura.

Strong endurance.

Unusual weapon history.

Leon frowned.

Unusual how?

Darius looked toward Sir Corren.

Corren answered.

Three years ago his fundamentals were poor because he learned almost entirely through survival.

No formal school.

What changed?

He disappeared from Registry competition for three years.

Trained under multiple instructors.

Returned.

Darius looked at Leon.

Do not assume independent means untrained.

Leon nodded.

Weakness?

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

He fights like someone who has had to survive multiple attackers.

Leon thought.

Wide awareness.

Yes.

But?

Leon continued.

Maybe commits attention outside the immediate opponent.

Darius gave nothing away.

Maybe.

Kael smiled.

Leon sighed.

You enjoy saying that.

Darius ignored him.

Joren’s record shows something else.

What?

He rarely retreats straight.

Why?

Caravan roads.

Ditches.

Wagons.

Multiple attackers.

He learned to angle constantly.

Leon nodded.

So chasing his centerline is useless.

Good.

Then Darius looked at him.

What is your advantage?

Leon thought.

Cleaner fundamentals.

Probably.

Better Aura.

Yes.

House training?

Darius shook his head.

That is not an advantage by itself.

Leon corrected.

Familiarity with structured dueling.

Darius nodded.

Good.

Kael looked toward the arena gate.

The bell for the previous match sounded.

Someone had won.

Another bracket line moved.

Then Grand Herald Ken’s voice echoed through the corridor.

Match Five.

Sir Leon Ashford of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Leon stood.

Adjusted his sword belt.

No dramatic expression.

No visible fear.

Reliable.

Kael remembered his answer.

People remember champions.

Generals.

Heroes.

But most days someone needs a person who arrives when promised and does not disappear when things become ugly.

Darius stepped aside.

Leon walked toward the gate.

Then stopped.

Looked back.

Sir.

Darius raised an eyebrow.

If I lose?

Darius answered immediately.

Learn why.

Leon nodded.

And if I win?

Darius’s expression remained flat.

Same answer.

Leon smiled.

Then entered the sunlight.

Across the arena, Sir Joren Pellaris walked through the opposite gate beneath no noble banner at all.

Only his name.

Only his sword.

Only the experience that had brought him back after failing once already.

Kael moved toward the sponsor rail.

Victor had advanced.

The first Black Dragon name had moved on the bracket.

Now Leon Ashford stood beneath the eyes of the Empire.

And unlike Victor’s chaotic aggression against a compact counterfighter, this bout promised something entirely different.

Two patient swordsmen.

One formally trained.

One forged on roads where rules mattered less than coming home alive.

The bell rang.

Leon raised his blade.

Joren lowered his.

And neither man moved.

Not yet.
