Sir Torren Hask’s second attack came faster than the first.

Not because the man suddenly became quicker.

Because Damien Ravenmoor was still thinking about the first exchange.

That half-second was enough.

Torren stepped.

Rear hand drove forward.

The long spear snapped toward Damien’s chest.

Damien twisted his torso and knocked the shaft aside with his own weapon.

Too late.

The steel head changed direction.

Not fully.

Just enough.

It scraped across Damien’s upper arm.

The scoring bell rang again.

Second contact.

The western side of the Coliseum erupted.

Damien retreated three steps.

Torren did not celebrate.

He followed.

That made him more dangerous.

Kael stood at the sponsor rail, fingers curled around the stone edge.

Two already.

Sir Corren Valehart sat several rows below.

Two clean contacts.

Neither serious.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Damien hadn’t touched Torren once.

Darius’s eyes remained on the arena.

Correct.

Kael frowned.

That was all?

Darius finally added.

Watch Damien’s feet.

Kael did.

Damien’s stance looked normal.

Spear forward.

Body slightly angled.

Weight distributed between both legs.

Then Torren attacked again.

Damien parried.

Stepped backward.

Torren followed.

Another thrust.

Damien redirected it.

Backward again.

Then Kael saw it.

Every defense ended with retreat.

Never lateral movement.

Never forward entry.

Damien was fighting Torren’s reach by giving him more room to use it.

He’s helping him.

Darius nodded.

Exactly.

Torren knew it too.

The western legion veteran’s pressure became almost cruelly simple.

No unnecessary spins.

No dramatic sweeping techniques.

Thrust.

Recover.

Step.

Thrust.

Recover.

Step.

He fought like a man who had repeated the same movement thousands of times until the motion had been stripped of everything useless.

His longer spear remained between Damien and his body.

Damien could see Torren.

Could read him.

Could probably predict many of the attacks.

None of that mattered if he couldn’t cross the distance.

Torren’s spearhead flashed toward Damien’s thigh.

Damien lowered his weapon.

Steel struck steel.

Torren immediately rotated the shaft.

The butt end came around toward Damien’s jaw.

Damien leaned away.

Missed.

Then the spearhead reversed again.

Damien jumped back.

Another step surrendered.

Victor Ravenshade stood near Kael wearing his bandages from the morning.

He looked miserable watching.

Why doesn’t Damien just rush him?

Marcus Wintermere stood beside him.

Because then he gets stabbed.

Victor looked at him.

Very insightful, Sir Marcus.

Marcus ignored him.

Leon Ashford had joined them after his own victory.

He watched more carefully.

Torren is waiting for exactly that.

Kael glanced over.

Leon continued.

Every time Damien shifts weight forward, Torren lowers the spearhead slightly.

Ready to thrust straight into the entry.

Darius heard.

Good.

Leon went quiet immediately.

Victor looked toward him.

You’re allowed to be happy when he says good.

Leon smiled faintly.

I’m learning not to become you.

Victor looked offended.

Torren attacked again.

Damien’s spear knocked the point outward.

This time Damien did not step back.

His rear foot moved sideways.

Only six inches.

Torren’s next thrust came.

Damien angled again.

Sideways.

Kael leaned forward.

There.

Darius said nothing.

Damien had recognized the same problem.

Torren’s eyebrows moved slightly.

He noticed too.

Next thrust.

Damien deflected and shifted right.

Torren adjusted.

Another attack.

Damien stepped left.

No retreat.

The pressure had not disappeared.

But Damien was no longer walking directly toward the boundary.

The crowd sensed the change before anyone landed a strike.

Torren smiled.

Better.

Damien answered.

Took me long enough.

Torren’s spear moved.

Low.

Damien parried.

High.

Damien ducked.

Then Torren stepped forward harder than before.

Damien moved sideways.

Torren changed direction with him.

Fast.

Much faster than his build suggested.

The long spear swept horizontally toward Damien’s ribs.

Damien blocked with the middle of his shaft.

Impact cracked through the arena.

His hands shook.

Torren used the contact.

He slid his spear along Damien’s.

Spearhead disappeared past the outside line.

The butt end drove forward.

Damien barely twisted.

Wood struck chest armor.

Scoring bell.

Third contact.

The western crowd roared.

Victor cursed.

Sir Maelin Ors turned her head toward him.

Victor immediately corrected himself.

Apologies, Sir.

Maelin looked back to the fight.

Kael did not.

Three.

Darius nodded.

Damien is losing.

Victor stared at him.

You could lie to us once in a while.

No.

Of course.

Damien stepped away and rolled one shoulder.

The butt strike had not injured him badly.

But it had done something else.

It showed Torren did not depend on the spearhead.

The entire weapon was dangerous.

Damien looked at the shaft in his hands.

Then at Torren’s.

The veteran waited.

Not out of mercy.

Confidence.

Kael watched Damien’s face.

Thinking.

Too much?

Maybe.

Darius finally spoke.

Damien’s greatest strength is becoming a weakness.

Kael looked over.

His judgment?

He likes understanding the whole problem before committing.

Torren does not give him time to understand everything.

Victor frowned.

Then what is Damien supposed to do?

Darius looked toward the arena.

Choose with incomplete information.

Victor nodded slowly.

Command lesson again.

No.

Darius corrected.

Duel lesson.

Different.

Kael understood.

Damien couldn’t order more scouts.

Couldn’t delegate.

Couldn’t wait for another report.

There was only Torren.

A spear.

Distance.

And whatever Damien could learn before the next strike reached him.

The bell showed three minutes.

Torren led three clean contacts to none.

Damien had not been ringed out.

Not disarmed.

Not seriously injured.

But if the fight eventually went to decision—

He was losing badly.

Torren lowered the spear.

Come on, Blackwood.

Damien did not answer.

Torren stepped forward.

Thrust.

Damien parried.

No retreat.

Second thrust.

Damien shifted.

Third.

He caught the shaft closer to the spearhead this time.

Dangerous.

Torren’s reach meant the weapon moved slower near the center than at the tip.

Damien stepped in half a pace.

Torren immediately withdrew.

Damien saw it.

So did Darius.

Kael leaned forward.

He made Torren retreat.

Half a step.

That was enough.

Damien reset.

Torren’s eyes narrowed.

Now both men knew the real fight had begun.

Torren attacked again.

Damien waited.

Spearhead toward shoulder.

Instead of meeting it near the tip, Damien moved inside the line and struck the middle of Torren’s shaft.

Different leverage.

Torren’s point was knocked wider than expected.

Damien stepped forward.

Torren’s rear hand pulled back instantly.

His spear shortened.

A long weapon became a shorter one.

The butt end came toward Damien’s stomach.

Damien expected it.

He turned.

The strike missed.

For the first time, Damien reached the space inside Torren’s preferred range.

The crowd rose.

Damien thrust.

Torren twisted.

Damien’s spearhead scraped Torren’s side armor.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

Blackwood erupted.

Victor shouted.

There!

Darius remained seated.

But Kael saw the slight shift of his shoulders.

Damien withdrew before Torren could trap him.

Good.

He did not stay just because he had finally reached the inside.

Torren touched the mark on his armor.

Then looked at Damien.

Now you understand.

Damien nodded.

A little.

Torren smiled.

That is more dangerous than pretending you understand everything.

Then he attacked.

The next exchange became the fastest of the fight.

Torren thrust.

Damien deflected closer to the shaft center.

Forward step.

Torren shortened grip.

Butt strike.

Damien blocked.

Damien’s spear moved toward ribs.

Torren parried.

Both rotated.

Wood cracked.

Steel flashed.

Damien attacked low.

Torren shifted his leg.

Counterthrust.

Damien leaned away.

Barely.

Torren tried extending the spear again.

Damien struck the shaft before he could create distance.

Good.

He was no longer fighting only Torren’s body.

He was fighting the weapon’s geometry.

Every spear had zones.

Tip.

Outer length.

Middle leverage.

Inner shaft.

Butt.

Different strengths at different distances.

Torren had spent years controlling those transitions.

Damien had to learn them during the fight.

Kael watched, fascinated.

Darius had always taught swordsmanship through distance.

But spear fighting made distance visible.

A foot changed everything.

Sometimes six inches.

Torren pushed.

Damien redirected.

Torren tried stepping back to regain full reach.

Damien followed.

Too aggressively.

There.

Torren’s eyes sharpened.

He had been waiting.

His rear foot planted.

Instead of retreating again, he stopped suddenly.

Damien stepped into what he thought was available space.

Torren’s spear reversed beneath Damien’s own shaft.

The butt end hooked behind Damien’s knee.

Pull.

Damien’s leg disappeared.

He hit the sand.

The Coliseum exploded.

Torren extended the spear instantly.

Steel point stopped inches from Damien’s chest.

Judge moved.

Kael stopped breathing.

Clear control?

Damien slapped the spearhead sideways with the lower half of his own shaft.

Rolled.

Torren thrust again.

Sand sprayed.

Damien kept rolling.

Second thrust missed.

Third—

Damien kicked Torren’s forward ankle.

Not hard.

Enough to disturb.

Then rose to one knee.

Torren swept.

Damien blocked.

Still kneeling.

The force nearly tore the spear from his hands.

Torren stepped closer.

Bad for Damien.

Good for Torren?

Not necessarily.

Damien suddenly released his spear with one hand.

Grabbed Torren’s shaft.

Torren pulled.

Damien held.

For one heartbeat, both controlled the same weapon.

Damien rose.

Torren shoved his own spear forward.

Damien used the motion.

Stepped around.

His own spear came horizontally across Torren’s chest.

Not blade.

Shaft.

He drove.

Torren stumbled.

One step.

Two.

Damien pushed.

Torren released his rear grip to recover balance.

Damien let go of Torren’s spear.

Then thrust with his own.

Torren barely turned.

Steel struck shoulder armor.

Scoring bell.

Second contact.

The crowd erupted again.

Three to two.

Damien was back in the fight.

Torren did not smile this time.

Good.

Kael liked that.

Respect had replaced amusement.

The veteran rolled his wrists once.

Reset grip.

Damien did the same.

Both breathing harder.

The four-minute bell sounded.

Victor leaned over the rail.

This is better than my fight.

Kael looked at him.

You said your fight was the greatest thing that ever happened.

That was before I watched this one.

Marcus frowned.

You’re changing loyalties quickly.

I am loyal to entertainment.

Darius’s voice rose from below.

Ravenshade.

Victor straightened.

Sir.

Watch the feet.

Victor looked down again.

Kael smiled.

Darius was training them during someone else’s tournament bout.

Of course he was.

Torren changed stance.

His front foot moved farther back.

Spearhead lowered.

Damien noticed.

Kael did not understand.

Then Torren attacked differently.

No long sequence.

One explosive thrust.

Damien deflected.

Torren withdrew completely.

Reset.

Again.

One thrust.

Retreat.

Again.

He stopped allowing Damien to remain inside.

He had learned.

Damien tried following.

Torren gave ground willingly now.

That seemed wrong.

Kael frowned.

He’s baiting him.

Darius nodded.

Damien stepped forward after another retreat.

Torren moved back.

Again.

Damien followed.

Then Torren’s rear heel approached the boundary.

Victor smiled.

Damien’s pushing him out.

Darius said:

No.

Again.

Victor sighed.

Torren waited until his heel nearly touched the line.

Then exploded forward.

Damien had expected retreat.

His weight was forward.

Torren’s thrust came like a released spring.

Damien twisted.

Too slow.

Spearhead struck his breastplate squarely.

The impact drove him backward.

Scoring bell.

Fourth contact.

Damien stumbled two steps.

Torren followed.

Second attack.

Damien blocked.

Third.

Too much force.

Damien’s hands separated slightly on his shaft.

Torren saw.

Swept low.

Damien jumped.

The spear reversed high.

Damien blocked again.

His grip weakened further.

Torren struck Damien’s spear near the forward hand.

Once.

Twice.

Third impact.

Damien’s spear tore free.

It spun across the sand.

Victor shouted.

No!

Torren advanced immediately.

Damien unarmed.

His spear seven yards away.

The judge watched.

No automatic loss.

But Torren had full weapon control.

Damien backed.

Not straight.

Sideways.

Good.

Torren thrust.

Damien dodged.

Second.

Dodged.

Third.

A shallow line cut across Damien’s outer shoulder armor.

Fifth contact.

The crowd roared.

Damien moved toward his spear.

Torren blocked the path.

Exactly.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

This was worse than Leon’s disarm.

Leon had been facing a sword with a shorter threat range.

Damien had to cross seven yards against a spear.

Darius leaned forward slightly.

First time.

Kael noticed.

What?

Darius did not answer.

Damien’s eyes moved.

Torren.

Spear.

His own weapon.

Boundary.

Nothing else.

No basket to throw.

No dropped shield.

No second weapon.

Just sand.

Damien suddenly rushed left.

Away from his spear.

Torren turned.

Thrust.

Damien stopped short.

Changed right.

Torren recovered.

Damien rushed again.

Torren swept.

Damien ducked.

Kael realized.

He’s making Torren move the spear.

Yes.

Darius answered.

Damien did not need to reach his weapon immediately.

He needed to make Torren commit the long weapon far enough away from the route.

Damien feinted left again.

Torren did not bite this time.

Veteran.

Good.

He remained between Damien and the spear.

Damien stopped.

Breathing.

Thinking.

Then he did something Kael didn’t expect.

He ran directly at Torren.

Victor’s mouth opened.

Marcus cursed under his breath.

Torren thrust.

Exactly as expected.

Damien did not dodge outward.

He moved inward along the spear.

One hand struck the shaft aside.

The steel tip scraped past his ribs.

Damien’s second hand caught the wood.

Torren tried pulling.

Damien stepped closer.

Inside.

Torren lifted one knee.

Damien turned his hip.

Knee glanced off thigh.

Then Damien drove his forehead into Torren’s face guard.

Metal cracked.

Torren staggered.

Damien grabbed the spear with both hands.

Torren held.

Now wrestling over one weapon.

Torren stronger.

Probably.

Damien did not try taking it.

He rotated the shaft downward.

Torren resisted upward.

Damien released.

Torren’s own resistance lifted the spear.

Damien ducked beneath.

Ran.

His own weapon.

Seven yards became five.

Four.

Torren turned.

Spear thrust from behind.

Damien heard the crowd react.

He threw himself forward.

Torren’s spearhead scraped his back plate.

Damien hit the sand.

Rolled.

Hand closed around his spear shaft.

He came up on one knee.

Torren attacked.

Damien raised his weapon.

Impact.

Both spears bent slightly under force.

Damien had his weapon back.

The Coliseum erupted.

Kael exhaled.

Victor slapped Marcus’s shoulder.

Marcus shoved him off.

That was insane.

Victor said.

Marcus nodded.

Yes.

Then smiled.

It was good.

Five minutes thirty.

Torren led five contacts to two.

Damien had survived disarm.

Still behind.

Now Torren’s face showed blood at the lower lip from the head strike.

Damien’s side armor was scratched.

Shoulder bruised.

Back plate marked.

No serious injury.

But stamina.

That mattered.

Torren had spent less during the disarm sequence.

Damien had sprinted, grappled, rolled.

Kael could see his breathing.

Darius could too.

Damien needed efficiency.

Fast.

Torren attacked again.

Damien did not meet him.

He retreated once.

Torren’s eyes sharpened.

Another retreat?

Maybe.

Torren advanced.

Damien moved backward again.

Kael frowned.

Didn’t we already learn—

Darius raised one hand slightly.

Wait.

Damien gave another step.

Torren pressed.

The pattern from the opening.

But different.

Damien’s feet were lighter now.

Not panicked.

Measured.

Torren thrust.

Damien barely parried.

Backward.

Again.

Torren followed.

Then Damien stumbled.

Only slightly.

His rear foot dragged.

Victor groaned.

He’s tired.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Kael looked closer.

Damien’s breathing looked heavy.

Shoulders rising.

Torren saw it.

He accelerated.

There.

Damien was showing weakness.

Real?

Kael didn’t know.

Torren attacked harder.

One thrust.

Damien barely escaped.

Second.

Block.

Third.

Damien’s spear almost dropped.

Torren committed.

Long forward step.

Maximum reach.

The same kind of pressure that had dominated the opening.

Damien suddenly stopped breathing heavily.

Kael saw it.

Too late for Torren.

Fake.

Not all of it.

Damien was tired.

But he had exaggerated.

Torren’s weight was fully forward.

Spear extended.

Damien slapped the point outside.

Then instead of stepping into Torren—

he stepped to the side.

Torren’s momentum carried past.

Damien’s spear shaft hooked behind Torren’s forward arm.

Pull.

Torren turned.

Damien rotated his hips.

The shorter spear became leverage.

Torren’s long weapon was trapped across his own body.

Damien kicked the inside of Torren’s rear knee.

Torren dropped.

Damien reversed grip.

Spearhead stopped at Torren’s neck.

The Coliseum exploded.

Judge moved closer.

Clear control?

Torren immediately rolled.

Damien’s point missed.

Torren swept his spear from the ground.

Damien jumped.

Torren rose.

But slower.

Damien attacked.

First thrust.

Torren blocked awkwardly.

Second.

Torren retreated.

Third.

Damien shifted angle.

Steel struck Torren’s ribs.

Third scoring contact.

Torren continued backward.

Damien pressed.

Now the veteran was retreating.

The crowd rose.

Damien’s fourth thrust went high.

Torren parried.

Fifth low.

Torren barely blocked.

Then Damien stopped.

Kael frowned.

Why stop now?

Darius answered.

Because Torren wants him to repeat the same mistake.

Boundary behind Torren.

Just like before.

The veteran smiled despite breathing hard.

Damien did not follow.

Good.

Both reset.

Six minutes thirty.

Five to three.

Still Torren.

But the fight no longer belonged to him.

Sir Calista Veyne sat forward.

Kael noticed.

She had not done so before.

The spear Shield’s eyes moved between hands and feet.

Not weapons.

Hands.

Kael followed.

Torren’s forward hand had begun sliding slightly farther down the shaft during recovery.

Fatigue?

Darius said nothing.

Damien noticed too.

Next exchange.

Torren thrust.

Damien deflected.

Torren recovered.

His forward hand slid.

There.

Again.

Damien attacked that side.

Torren blocked.

Recovered.

Hand slid.

Damien attacked again.

Torren frowned.

He knew Damien had seen something.

So he changed grip.

But changes under fatigue created new problems.

His reach shortened slightly.

Damien smiled for the first time.

Torren answered.

Don’t.

Damien’s smile vanished.

Then he attacked.

Damien’s style had changed completely from the opening.

No longer reacting.

He was forcing Torren to choose.

High thrust.

Torren parried.

Damien withdrew half-step.

Torren followed.

Damien attacked low.

Torren shifted.

Damien struck the shaft.

Then shoulder.

Torren blocked.

No clean contact.

But pressure.

Damien moved left.

Torren adjusted.

Right.

Torren followed.

Damien made him turn.

Again.

The longer spear was most efficient in lanes.

Damien kept changing the lane.

Torren’s feet worked harder.

His reach remained dangerous.

But his body had to rotate repeatedly.

Darius had taught Marcus something similar from his old championship fight.

Make the stronger opponent reset.

Damien had heard the story too.

Now he was using the idea differently.

Not copying.

Adapting.

Torren lunged.

Damien stepped outside.

His spearhead touched Torren’s outer arm.

Fourth contact.

Five to four.

The Coliseum roared.

Torren’s expression hardened.

Next attack came immediately.

Too immediately.

Emotion.

First time.

Damien saw.

Torren thrust high.

Damien parried.

Torren swept low.

Damien jumped.

But Torren had expected it.

Butt end came upward toward Damien’s ribs.

Impact.

Scoring bell.

Sixth contact for Torren.

Kael cursed softly.

Victor groaned.

Torren smiled.

Still here.

Damien landed awkwardly.

One knee dipped.

Then he nodded.

So am I.

Seven minutes forty.

Six to four.

Damien’s left side hurt.

His breathing heavier again.

Torren’s lower lip bleeding.

Forward hand fatigued.

Both knew.

The crowd had split beyond Houses now.

Some shouting Torren.

Others Damien.

Veteran versus rising Black Dragon knight.

Pressure versus control.

Reach versus adaptation.

Kael realized he had forgotten about the Golden Laurel.

Good.

That meant the fight itself mattered.

Torren changed again.

He shortened the spear grip.

Almost staff-like.

Damien immediately recognized.

Inside defense.

Torren no longer trusted full extension as much.

Damien had forced him out of his ideal style.

But the veteran gained something else.

Faster recovery.

He attacked with short thrust.

Damien blocked.

Butt strike.

Damien leaned.

Shaft sweep.

Damien parried.

Torren stepped close.

Much closer.

Damien had expected the long spear fighter to avoid inside range.

Wrong.

Torren had border experience.

He could fight there too.

His shoulder slammed Damien.

Damien staggered.

Torren’s knee struck thigh.

Not scoring weapon contact.

Still painful.

Damien tried bringing spear around.

No room.

Torren trapped shaft against his forearm.

Headbutt.

Damien’s brow struck helmet edge.

He stumbled.

Torren swept his ankle.

Damien fell.

Torren dropped the spearpoint toward chest.

Damien rolled.

Point hit sand.

Damien kicked upward.

Caught Torren’s wrist.

Torren’s grip loosened.

Damien grabbed his own spear near the middle and swung the butt end.

Torren blocked.

Both rose almost together.

Now their spears were no longer spears.

They were staffs with blades attached.

Close.

Ugly.

Fast.

Victor shouted approval.

Darius looked toward him.

Victor lowered his voice.

Respectfully.

Kael laughed.

Torren struck Damien’s shoulder with the shaft.

Not scoring blade contact.

Damien answered with butt strike to Torren’s chest armor.

Torren pushed.

Damien shifted.

Elbow.

Shoulder.

Wood.

Feet.

Neither could create full thrusting distance.

Then Damien did something risky.

He released his spear completely.

Torren’s eyes widened.

Damien stepped inside.

Both hands caught Torren’s shaft.

Not trying to take it.

He shoved it across Torren’s own chest.

Torren resisted.

Damien’s free leg stepped behind Torren’s.

Hip turn.

Throw.

Torren hit the sand hard.

Damien’s spear lay behind him.

Torren still held his.

Damien dropped a knee onto the shaft before Torren could raise it.

Torren punched him.

Jaw.

Damien rocked.

Second punch.

Damien caught wrist.

Torren twisted.

Both grappled.

The spear trapped beneath them.

The judge watched.

No clear control.

Damien could not stay.

Torren was heavier.

Damien knew.

He released.

Rolled backward.

Reached his own spear.

Torren stood.

Too slowly.

Damien thrust.

Torren barely brought weapon up.

The spearhead slipped past guard.

Stopped against chest armor.

Scoring bell.

Five to six.

One contact difference.

The Coliseum erupted.

Torren stumbled back.

Damien did not overpress.

Good.

Eight minutes forty.

One point behind.

Plenty of time.

Not much stamina.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Who wins if time ends like this?

Torren.

On effective contacts.

Likely.

Damien knows.

Yes.

He needs more.

Yes.

Victor looked at Kael.

You two sound like old men at a market.

Kael ignored him.

Torren looked toward the arena clock.

Damien saw.

There.

The veteran had begun thinking about protecting the lead.

Subtle.

He circled farther now.

No rush.

Damien advanced.

Torren gave space.

Not enough for ring-out risk.

Just enough.

Damien feinted.

Torren did not commit.

Another.

Nothing.

Damien thrust.

Torren parried.

Retreated.

Again.

Kael understood.

Now Torren was doing what Victor had almost done.

Fighting not to lose.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Damien stepped forward.

Torren moved back.

Another exchange.

No contact.

Clock passed nine thirty.

Damien needed action.

Torren knew.

He could make Damien desperate.

Damien’s face remained calm.

But his pace increased.

One attack.

Blocked.

Second.

Missed.

Torren retreated.

Third.

Torren deflected.

Damien’s breath hitched.

Fatigue.

Real.

Torren smiled.

Then the veteran made the mistake.

Small.

Human.

He believed Damien had to attack.

So when Damien suddenly stopped and lowered his spear slightly—

Torren stayed outside.

Waiting.

Damien did nothing.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Crowd murmured.

Clock moving.

Kael frowned.

He’s behind.

Darius looked interested.

Torren called.

You need me.

Damien answered.

Do I?

Torren glanced toward the clock.

You do.

Damien nodded.

Then why are you standing so far away?

Torren’s expression changed.

Damien continued.

You’re protecting one contact.

Torren’s jaw tightened.

Damien smiled faintly.

Veteran.

Border Legion.

Seven years.

And now you’re waiting for a clock.

The crowd reacted.

Provocation.

Not insult.

Pressure.

Torren knew.

He did not move.

Good.

Damien raised his spear.

Then turned slightly away.

Almost dismissive.

Victor whispered.

Oh, he’s mean.

Darius’s eyes remained fixed.

Torren finally moved.

Not because the words alone worked.

Because passivity would hurt ring control and judges if the contact lead became disputed.

He needed to show command too.

Damien had changed the decision.

Torren attacked.

Exactly what Damien needed.

Thrust.

Damien parried.

Torren recovered.

Damien stepped closer.

Torren shortened grip.

Expected.

But Damien had been studying the transition all fight.

When Torren’s front hand slid down the shaft, Damien struck directly at that hand.

Not lethal.

Controlled.

Torren pulled fingers away.

Grip broke.

Only rear hand remained.

Damien rotated his spear.

Shaft slammed Torren’s weapon sideways.

Torren tried recovering.

Too slow.

Damien stepped inside.

Spear butt struck Torren’s stomach armor.

Not scored blade contact.

But folded him slightly.

Damien hooked Torren’s spear with his own shaft.

Twisted.

Torren held.

Damien stepped across his line.

Changed leverage.

The long spear flew free.

Disarm.

The Coliseum detonated.

Torren moved immediately toward the weapon.

Damien did not chase Torren.

He kicked the spear.

It slid farther away.

Good.

Then he put himself between Torren and retrieval.

Torren stopped.

Now roles reversed.

Ten minutes forty.

Damien still technically behind six contacts to five.

But weapon control had changed.

Torren raised hands.

He was not surrendering.

Of course.

Damien kept distance.

Spear point forward.

Torren circled.

He knew what Halden had attempted earlier.

Unarmed rush.

Damien had watched Victor’s fight.

Torren feinted left.

Damien moved point.

Right.

Damien followed.

Torren suddenly charged.

Damien did not thrust into the chest.

Too dangerous.

He lowered the spearhead.

Torren jumped over the low thrust.

Exactly what Damien wanted.

The shaft rose.

Caught Torren across the waist.

Damien rotated.

Torren’s airborne momentum shifted.

He landed badly.

One knee hit sand.

Damien reversed the spear.

Steel point stopped against Torren’s shoulder.

Scoring bell.

Six to six.

The Coliseum erupted.

Tie.

Torren slapped the spear aside.

Damien withdrew.

Still no decisive control.

Torren rushed again.

Damien moved backward.

Not scared.

Measured.

Torren grabbed the shaft.

Damien released one hand.

Torren pulled.

Damien stepped forward with the pull.

Elbow strike.

Torren blocked.

Damien turned.

Spear shaft slid beneath Torren’s arm.

Lever.

Torren’s shoulder locked.

Damien could have forced it harder.

Didn’t.

Torren twisted free.

Then dove toward his spear.

Damien saw.

Could stab.

Did not.

Instead he raced.

Both reached it.

Torren’s hand touched shaft.

Damien stepped on the far end.

Torren pulled.

Damien’s boot pinned.

Torren looked up.

Damien thrust his own spear.

Torren rolled.

The point struck sand beside him.

Torren yanked again.

Spear slipped from beneath Damien’s boot.

Recovered.

The crowd exploded again.

Both armed.

Eleven minutes fifteen.

Forty-five seconds.

Six to six.

Now everything mattered.

Kael’s hands tightened on the rail.

Victor was silent.

Marcus too.

Leon.

Elias had arrived sometime during the fight and stood slightly behind them.

No one spoke.

Darius did not blink.

Torren and Damien stood across from one another.

Both exhausted.

Both bruised.

Both weapons marked.

No room for another long lesson.

One exchange might decide it.

Torren lowered his spear.

Damien raised his.

Thirty seconds.

Torren attacked.

Damien met him.

Steel.

Wood.

Turn.

Torren thrust.

Damien parried.

Damien countered.

Torren blocked.

Twenty.

Torren stepped sideways for the first time in several minutes.

Damien followed.

Torren feinted high.

Damien did not bite.

Low thrust.

Damien moved.

Ten.

The crowd began counting.

Nine.

Torren surged.

Long spear fully extended.

Maximum reach.

The opening attack from the beginning.

The technique that had controlled Damien.

Eight.

Damien parried.

Not outward.

Down.

Torren’s spearhead struck sand.

Seven.

Damien stepped onto the shaft.

Torren pulled.

Damien’s boot held for one heartbeat.

Six.

Damien rushed along the weapon.

Torren released front hand.

Butt strike preparing.

Five.

Damien expected.

He raised his own spear shaft.

Blocked the butt.

Four.

Their weapons locked.

Torren stronger.

Damien’s arms shook.

Three.

Damien stopped pushing.

Like Darius had explained from his championship final.

Do not fight the strength you want to beat.

Torren’s force carried forward.

Damien turned.

Two.

Torren stumbled past.

Damien’s spear reversed.

One.

The butt end struck behind Torren’s forward knee.

Torren dropped.

Final bell began.

But Damien’s movement had started before it.

He rotated.

Spearhead came around.

Stopped against Torren’s breastplate as the bell finished ringing.

Scoring crystal flashed.

The entire Coliseum froze.

Had it counted?

The judge looked toward the timekeeper.

Kael stopped breathing.

Victor whispered.

Come on.

The timekeeper raised one flag.

White.

Valid exchange initiated before bell.

Then the scoring bell rang.

Seventh contact.

Damien led.

Seven to six.

The Coliseum erupted.

Torren remained on one knee.

Damien’s spear pointed toward his chest.

He did not move.

Could the judge call decisive control?

The final bell had already ended the match.

No need.

The score mattered.

The panel confirmed.

Grand Herald Ken’s voice thundered across the arena.

Winner—

Sir Damien Ravenmoor of House Kael, Black Dragon!

Blackwood exploded.

Kael shouted before realizing he had.

Victor grabbed Leon.

Leon shoved him away while laughing.

Marcus punched one fist into the air.

Elias smiled.

Lily was standing.

Even Edwin applauded hard enough to abandon dignity.

Damien lowered his spear immediately.

Then offered Torren his hand.

The veteran stared at him.

Breathing hard.

Then took it.

Damien pulled him up.

Torren stood close.

You baited me with the clock.

Damien smiled faintly.

You baited me with the boundary.

Fair.

Torren looked toward the bracket board.

Then back.

You learn too much during a fight.

Damien answered.

Not enough before it.

Torren laughed.

Good answer.

They clasped forearms.

The western legion section applauded both.

No humiliation.

No villain.

Just one fighter advancing.

One eliminated.

That was enough.

The bracket changed.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor — ADVANCES

His name moved into the Spear Division Round of 16.

One line.

One victory.

Kael looked toward Darius.

He won.

Yes.

You knew he would?

No.

Kael smiled.

Good.

Darius looked toward him.

Why good?

Because I would’ve hated you if you said yes.

Reasonable.

Then Kael’s smile faded.

How close?

Darius looked back at the arena.

Very.

Torren controlled the first half.

If he had remained patient after the tie—

Damien might have lost.

Yes.

If Damien hadn’t recovered from the disarm—

Lost.

If Torren had hidden the hand fatigue—

Harder.

If Damien had chased the boundary—

Potential trap.

Kael nodded.

Good.

Real fight.

Real weakness.

Real win.

Damien reached the exit tunnel.

Darius met him there.

Damien bowed his head slightly.

Sir.

Darius looked at him.

What did you do wrong?

Damien laughed once.

Kael heard it from several steps away.

Not even congratulations?

Darius stared.

Damien straightened.

Retreated in straight lines early.

Yes.

Tried reading too much before committing.

Yes.

Got disarmed because I followed after the boundary retreat.

Yes.

Overused grappling twice.

Yes.

Exaggerated fatigue.

Darius paused.

That worked.

Damien nodded.

Still risky.

Yes.

Darius continued.

What won the fight?

Damien thought.

Adaptation.

Partly.

Weapon control at the end?

Partly.

Clock pressure?

Partly.

Damien frowned.

Then Darius looked toward Torren walking away through the opposite tunnel.

You stopped trying to make the fight behave.

Damien’s expression changed.

There.

Darius continued.

At the beginning you wanted enough information to choose correctly.

Torren attacked faster than your process.

Later, you accepted that every choice would contain uncertainty.

You made one.

Then adjusted.

Damien nodded slowly.

Darius added.

You also made him change his style three times.

Long pressure.

Short-recovery thrusts.

Close grip.

Damien looked toward the arena.

He adapted too.

Exactly.

Darius looked at him.

That is why this fight mattered.

Not because you solved him.

Because he kept changing after you did.

Damien smiled faintly.

Then Darius said:

Good fight.

Damien froze.

Victor shouted from behind them.

Two compliments in one day!

Darius closed his eyes.

Kael laughed.

Damien turned.

Victor stood with Marcus and Leon.

Victor pointed at Darius.

We heard it.

Darius looked at Kael.

Control your House.

Kael smiled.

Impossible.

A healer examined Damien’s shoulder.

Bruising.

No fracture.

Back scrape beneath armor.

Minor.

Left thigh impact.

Rest.

Hydration.

No additional heavy training that night.

Damien accepted all instructions.

Mostly because Darius stood there.

Kael sat opposite while the healer wrapped a compression band around Damien’s upper arm.

You moved on.

Damien nodded.

Round of sixteen.

Kael looked at him.

Do you know who is next?

Damien glanced toward Darius.

Darius had the bracket sheet folded beneath one arm.

Not yet.

Darius answered.

And not until the healer finishes.

Victor whispered.

He enjoys this.

Kael nodded.

Definitely.

Outside the healer chamber, nobles had already begun waiting.

Not a mob.

Worse.

Representatives.

One from Duke Carthain’s household.

One from Prince Marcus Asterion’s military staff.

A clerk wearing Marquis Oren Velmire’s silver tower.

And an officer in Cassian’s colors.

Kael stopped.

There.

Darius had warned them.

Damien had won one fight.

Not a championship.

One.

And already people wanted his name.

The Cassian officer approached first.

Lord Kael.

Kael inclined his head.

Commander?

Major Rellan Vorr.

First Prince’s household military liaison.

New name.

Kael filed it carefully.

Rellan was perhaps forty, narrow-faced, dark-skinned, short beard, formal black-and-red military coat.

No attempt at friendliness.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor available?

He is being treated.

Nothing serious?

Kael looked at him.

That’s a medical question.

Rellan paused.

Then nodded.

Fair.

What do you want?

To congratulate him.

And?

Rellan almost smiled.

You have spent enough time in Aurelia to know there is always an and.

Kael folded his arms.

Good.

Rellan continued.

Prince Cassian does not intend to make a formal service offer before the Imperial Ball.

But he would like Sir Damien invited to the First Prince’s military reception table during the ball.

Victor, listening from several feet away, mouthed something at Marcus.

Kael ignored him.

A reception table?

Rellan nodded.

Short conversation.

Officers.

Several newly recognized knights.

No oath.

No obligation.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius gave him nothing.

Of course.

Kael answered.

Give the invitation to Damien when he comes out.

Rellan nodded.

Correct answer.

Kael’s eyebrow rose.

Was there an incorrect one?

Refusing on his behalf.

Kael smiled thinly.

You don’t know me very well.

Rellan’s expression remained professional.

That is why the Prince wants to know the people around you.

Interesting.

Then he stepped aside.

The House Carthain representative came next.

Kael sighed.

Aurelia truly did not allow anyone to enjoy a victory for long.

Damien emerged.

Saw the people waiting.

Stopped.

Victor grinned.

Congratulations.

You won politics.

Damien looked at Kael.

What happened?

Kael pointed.

Ask them.

Damien’s eyes shifted toward the invitations.

Then Darius spoke behind him.

You are free to hear them.

Damien nodded.

I know.

Good.

The House Carthain representative approached.

The first real alternatives were beginning.

Not theoretical.

Not House Varrow letters.

Actual Imperial Houses.

Actual heirs.

Actual offers waiting behind compliments.

Kael remembered Duke Renald’s warning.

Do not reward loyal people less because you assume they will remain.

He watched Damien accept the invitation parchments.

Not commitments.

Options.

Good.

Kael wanted his choice eventually.

But it had to be a choice.

Otherwise the oath meant nothing.

The Coliseum bells rang again.

Another match would begin soon.

Kael looked toward the main arena.

Elias Thorn versus Edric Vale waited for the evening.

A Blackwood-trained candidate against the House Varrow swordsman who had spent weeks training beside them.

One would advance.

One would leave the bracket.

No villain.

No simple rivalry.

And both had reasons to prove something.

Victor walked beside Kael toward the arena.

You’re going to watch?

Of course.

Victor looked toward the bracket board.

Elias and Edric.

Kael nodded.

Victor became quieter.

That’s going to feel strange.

Yes.

We trained together.

Yes.

One loses.

Yes.

Victor frowned.

You really love that word today.

Kael smiled.

Darius taught me.

Behind them, Damien Ravenmoor stood with four invitations in his hands and a fresh bandage beneath his armor.

One hour earlier, he had been trapped at spearpoint by a veteran who controlled every inch of their battlefield.

Now his name had moved forward.

The bracket did not care how close defeat had come.

Only one line mattered.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor — ADVANCES

But Kael cared about everything that had happened between the lines.

The retreats.

The disarm.

The mistakes.

The false fatigue.

The hand position.

The clock.

The final turn.

That was where the fighter lived.

Not in the word victory.

And before the night ended, Elias Thorn and Edric Vale would have to create a story of their own.

Only one of them would get to write the next line.
