The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Kael woke to bells he still could not identify.

After four days in Solmara, he had learned enough to know that pretending every bell belonged to prayer was the sort of mistake visitors made. Some announced religious services. Others opened administrative offices, dismissed students, marked market hours, warned of fire, or communicated schedules between institutions whose buildings had been standing long before anyone currently working inside them was born. Orinth possessed enough bells that Kael suspected a person could spend several years learning them and still wake one morning wondering why the western district had suddenly decided to ring three times before breakfast.

He stood beside the window of the guest house while the city moved beneath a gray morning sky. The Church quarter was already awake. Clerks crossed the square carrying leather cases and rolled documents. Two wagons stopped near the administrative hall with boxes marked for an archive office. Students in dark coats moved quickly toward one of the schools farther east, while the cathedral steps were occupied by people entering for morning service and others who seemed to be using the wide stone stairs simply because they provided a convenient place to meet.

The knightly archive complex stood to the west, partially hidden behind older walls and connected buildings. Today Elias and Marcus would complete the record verification that determined exactly what the Church intended to write about them if tomorrow’s consecration went as planned.

Kael found himself thinking about that more than the ceremony.

A public oath lasted minutes.

A record might last centuries.

He dressed and went downstairs.

Elias was already at breakfast.

That alone was suspicious.

Normally Elias arrived after Marcus and complained about whoever had decided morning meals should occur in the morning. Today he sat with his consecration folder open beside his plate, reading one page while eating without apparently noticing what the kitchen had served him.

Marcus sat across from him with his own folder closed.

Kael took the chair between Darius and Brother Caelen.

”You’re calm,” he said to Marcus.

Marcus looked up. ”I am eating.”

”You checked those papers nine times yesterday.”

”Ten.”

Elias lowered his page. ”He checked them again before bed.”

Marcus looked toward him. ”You practiced your legal name in the mirror.”

Kael stopped reaching for bread.

”You practiced your name?”

Elias glared at Marcus.

Marcus continued, ”Twice.”

”Because Sister Meriel said people sometimes stumble during formal identification.”

”Your name is Elias Thorn.”

”There is more than that.”

”How much more?”

Elias looked around the table as though considering whether everyone deserved the information.

Malrec entered before he answered.

The Archdeacon carried a cup of tea and no book for once. Kael noticed immediately.

”No reading?”

Malrec sat. ”I have work.”

Kael looked toward the archive buildings through the window. ”Records?”

”Yes.”

”Elias and Marcus?”

”Partly.”

That word had become dangerous around Malrec.

Kael waited.

The Archdeacon drank his tea.

Kael continued waiting.

Malrec looked toward him. ”You have learned that silence occasionally produces more information.”

Kael smiled. ”Apparently.”

”It will not today.”

Darius almost smiled.

Kael sighed and started breakfast.

Sister Meriel arrived several minutes later carrying a schedule. Elias saw the paper and immediately stopped eating.

Meriel noticed.

”You may finish your food.”

”I am finished.”

”You ate half.”

”I am no longer hungry.”

”That is unfortunate. Record verification does not become shorter because you skip breakfast.”

Elias looked toward Kael.

Kael pointed toward his plate.

”Religious instruction.”

Elias muttered something under his breath but returned to eating.

Meriel reviewed the day. Elias would report to the Office of Knightly Recognition at the second morning bell. Marcus would begin fifteen minutes later at a separate desk. The two processes could take anywhere from one hour to most of the morning depending upon discrepancies.

Elias frowned. ”What kind of discrepancies?”

”Names.”

”My name has not changed.”

”Good.”

”Birth records?”

”Yes.”

”Those are correct.”

”Then that portion should be easy.”

Marcus asked, ”What else?”

”Examination records, identity verification, legal citizenship status, House sponsorship, military service, known disciplinary findings, title eligibility, outstanding criminal or civil restrictions relevant to knighthood, previous oath conflicts, and the exact wording under which each of you will be entered into the central register.”

Elias stopped chewing again.

Kael looked toward Malrec. ”Exact wording?”

The Archdeacon nodded. ”Records are not written as ’Elias became a knight.’”

Kael became interested.

”How detailed?”

Malrec looked at him.

Kael smiled.

”That was one question.”

”More detailed than you need before breakfast.”

Brother Caelen looked toward Elias. ”Most entries include legal identity, presenting House, recognition authority, examination information, consecration date, officiating authority, and later annotations when necessary.”

”What kind of annotations?” Marcus asked.

”Death. Revocation. suspension of ecclesiastical recognition. major changes of sworn service. certain honors. serious findings depending upon historical period and record practice.”

Kael leaned forward.

”So the entry changes.”

”Yes.”

”I thought it was a permanent record of the moment of consecration.”

”The original entry is permanent. The record may continue.”

That was much better.

Kael started asking another question.

Darius placed bread on his plate.

Kael looked at him.

”Eat.”

Kael frowned but obeyed.

The Office of Knightly Recognition occupied the second floor of a long building connected to the western archive complex by an enclosed stone passage. Kael expected towering shelves and ancient books immediately.

Instead, the first room looked like taxation.

Rows of desks.

Counters.

Clerks.

Waiting benches.

Document cabinets.

Ink.

Enough ink to make Brother Caelen visibly comfortable.

Kael stood near the entrance and stared.

”This is where knights begin?”

Canon Elian Voss approached from one of the inner offices.

”This is where records begin.”

The distinction mattered.

Voss wore the same severe expression he had carried the previous afternoon. He acknowledged Kael, Darius, and Malrec before looking toward the two candidates.

”Thorn. Wintermere.”

Both straightened.

”Folders.”

They handed them over.

Voss checked the seals without opening them.

”Today is verification, not examination. If a clerk asks a question, answer the question asked. If you do not know, say you do not know. If a record is wrong, say it is wrong. Do not guess because you believe a correct-sounding answer will make this faster.”

Elias glanced toward Marcus.

Voss noticed.

”That warning exists because people have done it.”

Kael smiled faintly.

Of course they had.

Voss pointed toward two separate counters.

”Begin.”

Elias went left.

Marcus right.

Kael started following.

Voss stepped into his path.

”No.”

Kael stopped.

”I wasn’t—”

”You were.”

”I only wanted to observe.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because identity verification belongs to the candidate.”

”That sounds unnecessarily private.”

”It includes family and legal records.”

Kael considered.

”Fine.”

Voss looked surprised.

Kael frowned. ”I can accept boundaries.”

”Encouraging.”

Kael turned toward Darius.

Darius wisely said nothing.

Malrec gestured toward a side corridor.

”You have your own business.”

Kael became suspicious. ”What business?”

”House sponsorship verification.”

Kael stopped.

”I thought Edwin sent everything.”

”He did.”

”Then what am I verifying?”

”That House Kael still stands behind what it submitted.”

Kael looked toward Elias and Marcus disappearing into different sections of the office.

Then followed Malrec.

The sponsorship room was smaller and far more comfortable than the public office. A long table occupied the center. Three Church officials waited with copies of House Kael’s records arranged before them.

Kael recognized House Kael’s seal.

His own signature.

Edwin’s administrative certification.

Darius’s military statements.

The written answer to Malrec’s question about what a knight owed those who could not command him.

That document sat on top.

Kael took the empty chair.

Darius sat beside him.

Malrec remained standing.

One of the officials introduced herself as Registrar Maelin Corva, senior reviewer for noble and institutional sponsorship. She appeared to be in her late forties and carried none of Voss’s obvious severity. That lasted until she spoke.

”Prince Kael, are Elias Thorn and Marcus Wintermere members of House Kael’s military service?”

”Yes.”

”Did House Kael present both men for the Imperial Knight Examination?”

”Yes.”

”Were the records supplied to the examination authority accurate to the best of your knowledge at the time they were submitted?”

”Yes.”

”Have you since learned of information that would have materially changed those submissions?”

”No.”

”Did House Kael knowingly omit disciplinary records concerning either candidate?”

”No.”

”Do you understand that consecration does not place either knight beyond future military, Imperial, civil, or ecclesiastical review?”

”Yes.”

”Do you understand that House Kael may not use sponsorship to obstruct lawful investigation into serious knightly misconduct?”

”Yes.”

”Do you understand that House Kael does not own the title?”

Kael paused.

Not because he disagreed.

Because of the wording.

Corva noticed.

”Explain the hesitation.”

Kael looked toward the documents. ”I am deciding what you mean by own.”

”Good.”

That sounded disturbingly like Malrec.

Corva continued. ”A noble House may sponsor a knight. Employ him. Command him within lawful structure. Reward him. Dismiss him from House service. A House does not possess the right to redefine Imperial knighthood around its own interests.”

Kael nodded. ”Then yes. I understand.”

”If Elias Thorn leaves House Kael ten years from now, does he cease being a knight?”

”No.”

”If Marcus Wintermere refuses a directly unlawful order from you, may you declare that refusal proof he is unworthy of the title?”

”No.”

”If one commits serious misconduct while serving you, may House Kael handle the matter privately and require silence?”

”No.”

Corva watched him.

”Why?”

Kael thought of the miller’s notice in Velmar.

The petition waiting for witnesses.

Borrowed trust.

”Because the title carries trust beyond the House.”

Corva nodded once.

”Good.”

Kael looked toward Malrec.

”There it is again.”

Malrec remained expressionless.

Corva raised an eyebrow.

Kael shook his head. ”Nothing.”

The questions continued.

Some were legal.

Others were almost philosophical.

Would Kael distinguish between loyalty to House Kael and loyalty to the Empire if the two ever conflicted?

He said yes.

Would he accept that a knight could remain honorable while disagreeing with him?

Yes.

Would he accept that a knight could be wrong while acting honestly?

Yes.

Would honest intent excuse every consequence?

No.

Would unlawful conduct become lawful because it benefited Blackwood?

No.

Would a knight serving House Kael be expected to prioritize Blackwood civilians over other Imperial civilians purely because they belonged to Kael’s territory?

That one took longer.

”Under ordinary House duty, their assigned responsibilities may prioritize Blackwood.”

Corva waited.

Kael continued. ”But if you mean whether someone outside Blackwood becomes less worthy of consideration because they are not ours, no.”

”What if resources are limited?”

”Then duty, authority, circumstance, and capability decide. Not simply affection.”

Darius glanced toward him.

Kael noticed.

That answer had Darius in it.

And Iris.

And Jessa.

And Marcus’s bridge.

Corva looked at the House statement.

”You involved civilians in drafting this.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because they are the people most likely to experience a knight’s title without having authority over him.”

Corva nodded.

”Did they decide House doctrine?”

”No.”

”Why not?”

”Because listening does not transfer responsibility for the final decision.”

This time Malrec smiled faintly.

Kael caught it.

He decided not to comment.

The sponsorship verification lasted nearly an hour. When it ended, Registrar Corva signed the bottom of a document and pressed a small seal beside her name.

”House sponsorship verified.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”That was it?”

Corva gathered the remaining records.

”What were you expecting?”

”I don’t know.”

”Trumpets?”

Malrec coughed.

Kael looked toward him.

The Archdeacon looked entirely too innocent.

”I expected something slightly more ceremonial.”

”The ceremony is tomorrow.”

Fair.

Corva looked toward Darius.

”Sir Darius, remain.”

Kael stopped.

”For what?”

”Command verification.”

Kael stood.

”Can I observe?”

”No.”

He sighed.

Darius sat.

That betrayal was worse because he looked comfortable.

Kael left with Malrec.

Outside, he found himself back in the public registration office.

Marcus sat at a counter speaking to an elderly clerk.

Elias was nowhere visible.

Kael resisted approaching.

Malrec noticed.

”You may look.”

”I know.”

”You are trying not to interfere so hard that you now look guilty.”

Kael relaxed slightly.

Marcus handed over a small document.

The clerk read.

Then said something Kael could not hear.

Marcus frowned.

A second clerk joined them.

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Malrec remained calm.

”What happened?”

”I don’t know.”

”Should someone—”

”No.”

Kael waited.

Marcus pointed at the page.

The clerks compared two records.

Then one disappeared into a back room.

Kael felt himself leaning forward.

Malrec looked toward him.

”Breathe.”

”I am breathing.”

”Poorly.”

The clerk returned carrying a larger ledger.

He opened it.

Marcus looked.

Then laughed.

Whatever the problem was, it was not serious.

Five minutes later he left the counter and saw Kael.

Kael waited until Marcus approached.

”What happened?”

Marcus smiled.

”My mother’s birthplace is wrong on one copy.”

Kael blinked.

”That was it?”

”The examination record says Wintermere Ford. The birth record says Dellen Ford.”

”Which is right?”

”Dellen.”

”And?”

”They corrected the copy.”

Kael stared toward the counters.

He had imagined hidden legal trouble.

Disqualification.

An objection.

Something important.

Instead, a clerk had written the wrong village.

Marcus looked amused.

”You were worried.”

”No.”

Malrec made a small sound.

Kael ignored him.

”Where is Elias?”

”Still doing family verification.”

”Problem?”

”I don’t know.”

Kael decided not to ask again.

Progress.

Marcus sat beside him on one of the waiting benches.

For several minutes they watched clerks work.

Candidates came and went.

Not many.

An older woman wearing examination insignia stood at another counter with what looked like a provincial military record. A young nobleman sat with two clerks and an enormous stack of family documents. Near the far end of the room, a man in travel-stained clothing was arguing quietly about the spelling of his surname.

Kael looked toward Marcus.

”Do you know any of them?”

”No.”

”Other examination regions?”

”Probably.”

Kael nodded.

The ceremony tomorrow was not being held specifically for House Kael.

That mattered.

Elias and Marcus were important to Blackwood.

Here they were two candidates among others moving through an institution that had existed before either of them was born.

Kael liked that.

It gave the title scale without making them small.

Elias appeared twenty minutes later.

His expression was strange.

Not worried.

Annoyed.

Kael stood.

”What happened?”

Elias handed him a copy of a record.

Kael read.

Elias Thorn, lawful son of Bren Thorn and Alys Thorn, born within Blackwood territory—

Kael stopped.

”What?”

Elias pointed lower.

The record continued.

Agricultural household.

Kael looked toward him.

”They wrote farmer.”

”No.”

”They wrote agricultural household.”

”Exactly.”

Kael waited.

Elias folded his arms. ”My father was a cooper.”

Marcus laughed.

Elias glared.

”He farmed too.”

”He owned three fields.”

”And made barrels.”

Kael smiled.

”That is the problem?”

”They wanted to list household occupation.”

”What did they put now?”

”Mixed agricultural and craft household.”

Marcus laughed harder.

Elias looked toward Malrec.

”This is why records become stupid.”

Malrec raised an eyebrow.

Elias continued before caution returned.

”Someone chooses one word because it fits a box, and then fifty years later somebody reads it and thinks my family were only farmers.”

Kael stopped smiling.

That was actually interesting.

Malrec noticed the change.

Elias looked at Kael.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”No. You have the face.”

Kael sighed.

”I was thinking about categories.”

Marcus groaned.

”Cassian again?”

”Yes.”

Malrec looked between them.

Kael explained briefly.

His brother’s warning that people could become components if Kael only saw their useful role.

Malrec listened.

Then looked toward Elias’s corrected record.

”Administrative categories are necessary.”

Kael nodded.

”And dangerous.”

”Sometimes.”

”Because they flatten people.”

”Always.”

Kael looked surprised.

Malrec continued. ”That does not make them useless. It means people should remember that a category is a tool for finding information, not a complete description of the person.”

Elias pointed toward the page.

”That is what I said.”

”You called the records stupid.”

”The principle was inside it.”

Malrec gave him a long look.

Elias smiled.

Kael laughed.

By midday, both candidate files were verified.

No formal objections had been submitted.

No unresolved legal conflicts existed.

No missing documents remained.

Elias and Marcus signed their final pre-consecration confirmations beneath the supervision of Canon Voss.

Then Voss stamped both folders.

”Eligible for consecration.”

Elias looked at the stamp.

Marcus did too.

The words seemed to settle something.

Not title.

Not yet.

But the Church had finished asking whether some hidden administrative reason should stop them from reaching the oath.

Voss gathered the folders.

”These go to the ceremony office.”

Elias watched them leave his hands.

”What happens after tomorrow?”

”If you complete the oath and the consecration is certified, the permanent entries are prepared.”

”Immediately?”

”Usually within the day.”

”And the central book?”

Voss looked at him.

”The central register is not a single magical book where one priest writes every new knight personally.”

Elias looked slightly disappointed.

Kael did too.

Voss noticed both.

”Did you think it was?”

Kael answered first.

”Possibly.”

Malrec closed his eyes.

Voss sighed.

”The Church maintains a central series of registers.”

”Series?” Kael asked.

”Yes.”

”How many?”

Malrec raised one hand.

”Archive tour.”

Kael stopped.

Right.

This afternoon.

Voss looked toward Malrec.

”You are taking him inside?”

”Part of it.”

”My condolences.”

Kael frowned.

”Why does everyone assume I will cause problems?”

Canon Voss looked toward Darius, who had just returned from command verification.

Darius answered.

”Evidence.”

Traitors.

They ate a late lunch in the administrative quarter before the archive visit.

Elias and Marcus were finally relaxed enough to eat properly.

That lasted until Sister Meriel handed them the final ceremony order.

Tomorrow morning.

Cathedral assembly at the second bell.

House presentation shortly afterward.

Public oath before the midday bell.

Final blessing and recognition.

Archive certification after the ceremony.

Elias read the schedule twice.

Then looked toward Marcus.

”Tomorrow.”

Marcus nodded.

”Actually tomorrow.”

”Yes.”

”No more surprise extra day.”

Brother Caelen looked offended.

”There was no surprise day.”

”You people communicate time maliciously.”

Caelen ignored him.

Kael looked toward the last line.

”Archive certification after the ceremony.”

Malrec nodded.

”So we see the entry tomorrow?”

”Not necessarily.”

Kael frowned.

”Why?”

”Because records take time.”

”How much?”

”Depends.”

Kael leaned back.

”Of course.”

Malrec continued. ”The legal recognition occurs upon completion and certification of the consecration. The archival entry records that event. Do not confuse the physical act of writing with the moment the title becomes valid.”

Elias nodded slowly.

”So if the clerk is late with ink, I’m still a knight.”

”Yes.”

Marcus smiled. ”Important.”

Kael looked toward Malrec.

”When do they actually get to use ’Sir’?”

”Once the consecration is completed and certified.”

”Tomorrow?”

”If nothing prevents it.”

Elias sighed.

Malrec smiled faintly.

”Almost.”

The archive tour began after lunch.

Kael had expected shelves.

He had not expected stone.

The older portion of the knightly archive sat partly below ground, built into the western side of the Church quarter where generations of construction had grown around the original complex. The entrance was narrower than the grand administrative buildings nearby, guarded by two Church wardens who checked Malrec’s authorization even though both clearly knew him.

Kael noticed that.

The wardens noticed him noticing.

One asked, ”Problem, Your Highness?”

”No.”

The man waited.

Kael smiled faintly.

”I like that you checked.”

The warden looked surprised.

”Everyone gets checked.”

Malrec stepped through.

”Do not encourage him.”

Kael followed.

Inside, the air changed.

Cooler.

Dry.

The first chamber contained no ancient records.

It contained coats.

Bags.

Writing materials.

A table where visitors signed entry documents.

Kael looked toward Brother Caelen.

”This is less dramatic than expected.”

”Good archives usually are.”

Kael surrendered his travel cloak and signed the visitor ledger.

Darius signed after him.

Elias and Marcus were not allowed beyond the public record hall because they were active candidates whose files were currently moving through the recognition process.

Elias objected.

Malrec said no.

That ended it.

Sister Meriel took both men away for final oath preparation while Kael, Darius, Malrec, and Brother Caelen continued deeper into the archive.

They passed through two heavy doors.

Then Kael finally saw the records.

The first hall was enormous.

Shelves rose from floor to ceiling along both sides, divided by stone supports and narrow walkways. Books varied in size and age. Some were thick leather-bound volumes. Others were newer standardized registers. Numbered boxes occupied entire sections. Clerks moved between tables beneath large windows designed to provide daylight without direct sun falling across the older documents.

No one whispered because the place was sacred.

They whispered because people were working.

Kael stood still.

”How many?”

Malrec sighed.

”You always begin with numbers.”

”They matter.”

Brother Caelen answered. ”Across all knightly archive holdings?”

”Yes.”

”I don’t know.”

Kael looked at him.

Caelen raised one hand.

”Before you insult me, the answer depends upon whether you mean individual records, register volumes, supplementary case files, copies, regional transfers, disciplinary records, death notices, or related correspondence.”

Kael smiled.

”That was a good answer.”

”I regret giving it.”

Malrec pointed toward a row of newer volumes.

”Current central recognition registers.”

Kael approached.

He did not touch.

That seemed obvious.

Each spine displayed a year range and sequence numbers.

”Tomorrow’s entries go into one of these?”

”Eventually, yes.”

”Names arranged by date?”

”Primarily.”

”Not House?”

”No.”

”Territory?”

”No.”

”Then how do you find someone?”

Brother Caelen pointed toward a separate desk.

”Indexes.”

Kael turned.

Several enormous reference volumes rested there alongside newer card systems.

Kael smiled.

”Redundancy.”

Malrec looked pained.

”I told you he would say it.”

Darius nodded.

Kael ignored them.

Brother Caelen explained that the modern system maintained multiple ways to locate a knight’s record: consecration date, legal name, House affiliation at recognition, regional examination authority, and later service references when recorded. Older periods were less consistent.

”How much less?”

Caelen looked toward Malrec.

The Archdeacon smiled faintly.

”Show him.”

They moved into an older hall.

The books changed immediately.

Less standardized.

Different sizes.

Different bindings.

Some repaired repeatedly.

Dates carved into shelf markers went backward by centuries.

Kael slowed.

A section predated Augustus.

Then another predated Augustus’s father.

Then the modern Imperial dynasty entirely.

He stopped.

”These were kept before the Asterion Empire?”

”Yes,” Malrec said.

”By the same Church?”

”Predecessor institutions that eventually became part of it.”

Kael looked toward the shelves.

”So the archive is older than the Empire.”

”Parts of the collection are.”

That mattered more than Kael expected.

Aurelia taught history forward from the Empire.

Solmara had shelves proving that people had been recording oaths, military service, religious recognition, land agreements, and disputes when the Asterion name meant nothing to most of the continent.

Malrec selected no book himself. An archivist had joined them, a thin elderly woman named Keeper Aveline Tor, who looked at Kael with the suspicion of someone who had spent fifty years protecting paper from enthusiastic people.

She wore gloves.

Kael immediately kept his hands behind his back.

Aveline noticed.

”Good.”

Kael smiled.

”I am learning.”

”So I was warned.”

Malrec looked innocent.

Aveline removed one volume from a shelf and carried it to a reading table.

She placed it carefully on a padded support.

”Early Imperial period.”

Kael stepped closer.

The cover was old enough that most decoration had worn away.

Aveline opened it.

Handwriting filled the page.

Not printed forms.

Not clean modern columns.

Names.

Dates.

Notes squeezed into margins.

Symbols Kael could not understand.

Different inks from different years.

”This is terrible,” he said softly.

Aveline’s head turned.

Kael quickly continued. ”For finding things.”

”Correct.”

He relaxed.

The Keeper pointed toward one page.

”Records from the first decades after the Empire consolidated this region. Several local knightly traditions still existed. Recognition practices were inconsistent. Some entries record oath witnesses. Some omit them. Some identify a lord. Others identify only a settlement.”

Kael read one.

Jaren Avel, sworn before Bishop Merron, recognized in service of the Eastern Host.

No House.

No exact territory.

Another:

Selia Var, daughter of Hen Var, accepted beneath the River Oath following the defense of Calren Ford.

Kael looked toward Malrec.

”Different oath?”

”Yes.”

”When did the current one appear?”

”Gradually.”

Kael smiled.

”Tradition changed.”

Malrec stared.

”Yes, Kael.”

”I am just confirming.”

Aveline turned another page.

One entry had been crossed through.

Not erased.

A later note filled the margin.

Kael leaned closer.

”What happened?”

”Title recognition disputed after false lineage claim.”

His attention sharpened.

”False lineage?”

”The man presented himself as belonging to a noble branch he did not belong to.”

Kael read the old surname.

It meant nothing to him.

”What did he gain?”

Aveline shrugged slightly. ”At the time? Sponsorship. Social standing. Easier recognition. Perhaps inheritance implications.”

”Same bloodline?”

”No evidence.”

Kael nodded.

The future argument that immediately tried forming in his mind remained unspoken.

Main families.

Branch families.

Names.

Legitimacy.

He left it there.

Not every old fraud needed to become a lesson about the Empire’s future.

Aveline turned several pages.

”This is what interests most visiting nobles.”

She pointed toward a section where family names appeared more consistently.

Kael read.

Some Houses still existed.

Others did not.

Several names resembled great Houses he knew but differed in their endings or prefixes. Cadet branches. Marriage lines. Extinct families. Houses absorbed into others.

Kael looked toward Darius.

”Do titles record bloodline branches?”

”Where relevant to legal identity.”

Aveline answered before Darius could continue. ”Not because the Church determines noble succession. Because people must be identified accurately.”

Kael nodded.

Same principle again.

Record what the person is.

Do not pretend that means the record owns everything the person means.

They moved farther back.

Aveline showed him a damaged register recovered after a fire.

Half the pages had darkened edges.

Several names were unreadable.

Another volume had water stains from a flood more than two centuries earlier. Later clerks had copied surviving entries into a replacement, preserving notes about uncertain wording rather than pretending damaged sections were known.

Kael stopped over one such entry.

Surname partially lost. Service under House Merath probable, not confirmed.

He smiled faintly.

”Unknown.”

Aveline looked toward him.

”What?”

”Nothing. Blackwood has been using information categories.”

”Confirmed. Reported. Suspected. Unknown?”

Kael stared.

”How do you know?”

”Brother Caelen talks.”

Caelen looked betrayed.

Aveline continued. ”Archivists have been distinguishing certainty longer than Blackwood has existed.”

Kael laughed.

”Fair.”

She pointed toward the damaged record.

”The worst thing an archive can do is replace a gap with confidence.”

Kael became still.

That sentence went deeper than records.

Hadran.

Toll.

Ashmaws.

Rumors at Rellin Cross.

Reports reaching command.

A missing fact was dangerous.

A false certainty placed inside the gap could be worse.

Darius looked toward him.

Kael nodded once.

”I heard it.”

Aveline looked between them.

”Does he always do that?”

”Yes,” Kael said.

Darius answered at the same time.

”He needs it.”

Aveline smiled faintly.

The tour continued for nearly two hours.

Malrec had promised one.

Nobody mentioned it.

Kael did not either because he feared reminding him.

They saw a room where damaged documents were repaired.

Not magically.

At least not primarily.

Specialists cleaned pages, reinforced bindings, copied text when necessary, and stored fragile material under controlled conditions. Minor preservation magic existed, but Aveline explained that relying entirely on magic created its own vulnerabilities. Enchantments failed. Mages died. Materials reacted differently. Old paper sometimes suffered from poorly applied preservation spells used by enthusiastic priests who believed magic could solve everything.

Kael looked toward Malrec.

The Archdeacon looked away.

”Historical?”

”Very.”

Kael smiled.

They saw duplicate records being prepared for regional archives.

Death notices waiting to be matched with central entries.

Formal title revocations stored beside the original record rather than replacing it.

Kael stopped at that.

”You don’t remove the name?”

”No,” Aveline said.

”Even if the knight disgraced the title?”

”Especially then.”

Kael frowned.

”Why?”

”Because if we erase the record, future generations may believe he was never recognized.”

She closed the file before him.

”Institutions protect themselves by remembering mistakes too.”

Kael looked toward Malrec.

The Archdeacon said nothing.

Aveline continued. ”The record should say he became a knight. The record should also say why he ceased to hold that standing, if that occurred.”

”Not rewrite the past.”

”Correct.”

Kael thought about House records.

Military records.

Future Guild records.

A bad result did not mean pretending the earlier decision had never happened.

Otherwise nobody could examine why it had seemed correct at the time.

They reached the modern reading hall again near late afternoon.

Kael had asked fewer questions during the final half hour.

Not because he had fewer.

Because the place rewarded thinking before speaking.

At the exit, Aveline returned his signed visitor document.

Kael looked toward her.

”Thank you.”

”You behaved better than expected.”

Kael frowned.

”That is a terrible compliment.”

”It is the one you earned.”

Darius smiled.

Kael looked toward Malrec.

”You told everyone I was dangerous.”

”No.”

Aveline answered.

”Brother Caelen did.”

Kael turned.

The clerk had already walked away.

”Coward.”

Outside, the afternoon light felt almost too bright after the archive halls.

The Church square was crowded.

Students crossed between buildings. Petitioners waited outside an administrative office. A group of pilgrims gathered near the cathedral steps. Wagons delivered food to one of the residential complexes.

The archive behind Kael contained centuries.

The square in front of him did not care.

People needed dinner.

Records did not stop ordinary life.

Kael liked that.

Darius stood beside him.

”What did you learn?”

Kael looked toward the archive.

”That records lie.”

Darius raised an eyebrow.

”Not intentionally.”

Kael continued. ”They simplify. Categories simplify. Missing information survives. Context disappears. Copies introduce errors. People later read things differently than the person writing them expected.”

”Yes.”

”But not keeping records would be worse.”

”Yes.”

Kael looked toward him.

”So the answer is not perfect information.”

”No.”

”It is preserving what you know while showing what you don’t.”

Darius nodded.

Kael smiled faintly.

”That applies to command.”

”Yes.”

”Governance.”

”Yes.”

”The Guild.”

”Yes.”

”History.”

”Yes.”

”People.”

Darius looked toward him.

”That one requires more caution.”

Kael nodded.

A person could not be preserved in a file.

Elias was not agricultural household.

Marcus was not soldier who abandoned post eleven minutes.

Milo was not mage support.

Sera was not archer.

Kael himself was not simply Tenth Prince.

Records needed categories.

Leaders needed to remember where categories ended.

They found Elias and Marcus in a preparation hall beside the cathedral.

Both wore partial ceremonial clothing for fitting.

Elias looked miserable.

Marcus looked almost respectable.

Kael stopped.

Elias pointed at him.

”Do not.”

Kael smiled.

”I said nothing.”

”The collar is too high.”

A Church tailor standing nearby replied, ”It is exactly the required height.”

”That does not make it comfortable.”

”It is not designed for sleeping.”

”I am not sleeping in it.”

”Then we agree.”

Marcus looked toward Kael.

”They’ve been arguing for twelve minutes.”

The tailor corrected him.

”Fourteen.”

Kael laughed.

The ceremonial clothing was not armor.

Both candidates would wear dark formal coats carrying House Kael’s insignia in restrained embroidery near one shoulder, while the opposite side remained intentionally plain until recognition was completed. Their swords would be carried but peace-bound during the first portion of the ceremony. After the oath and blessing, the bindings would be removed before they departed.

Kael noticed the symbolism immediately.

”Before the oath, armed but restrained.”

Sister Meriel nodded.

”After?”

”Recognized knights may bear their arms according to law.”

Kael looked toward Elias.

Elias smiled faintly.

”I like that part.”

”Of course.”

Marcus adjusted one sleeve.

”What about the title insignia?”

”Presented after consecration,” Meriel said.

”By Malrec?”

”No.”

Both looked surprised.

Meriel continued. ”Archdeacon Malrec conducted your regional review. The consecration will be witnessed by senior clergy assigned to tomorrow’s session.”

Elias frowned.

”So Malrec does all the difficult work and someone else gets the ceremony.”

Malrec had entered behind them.

”That is administration.”

Elias turned.

”You’re fine with that?”

”Yes.”

”No desire to stand at the center?”

”No.”

Kael looked at him.

Malrec noticed.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You expected ambition.”

”Maybe.”

Malrec walked closer.

”Ambition does not always mean wanting to be visible.”

That answer stayed with Kael.

Cassian.

Adrian.

Elena.

Augustus.

Even Edwin.

People could want influence without applause.

Victor was learning the same thing at Greywatch.

Kael wondered how he was doing.

He had been gone long enough that a message might reach Blackwood before Kael returned, but not enough for Kael to expect one here.

Tomorrow belonged to Elias and Marcus.

Victor could wait.

The final rehearsal began before sunset.

This time Kael was included.

He stood where House Kael would stand tomorrow, several steps behind the candidates and to their right. Darius would stand with him as principal military witness. Malrec would occupy the Church side rather than House Kael’s.

The cathedral felt entirely different when mostly empty.

Rows of benches stretched beneath high stone arches. Afternoon light entered through tall windows without filling the interior with colored glass or overwhelming decoration. The altar area was broad enough to accommodate multiple candidates. Tomorrow several others would take the oath alongside Elias and Marcus, though each sponsorship would be called separately.

Kael liked that too.

Blackwood was not the center of the institution.

House Kael would receive its moment.

Then another House.

Another candidate.

Another family.

The Empire was larger than their story.

Sister Meriel walked Kael through his part.

”When House Kael is called, stand.”

”I understand.”

”Wait until your name is spoken.”

”Yes.”

”Approach the marked position.”

”Yes.”

”Do not approach the candidates.”

Kael looked toward her.

”I wasn’t planning to.”

”Several presenting lords do.”

”Why?”

”To adjust clothing, whisper advice, or behave as if the candidate will forget how to stand.”

Elias smiled.

Kael looked toward him.

”I would never.”

Everyone looked at Kael.

He frowned.

”Fine. I understand why the rule exists.”

Meriel continued.

The officiating bishop would ask whether House Kael presented Elias Thorn and Marcus Wintermere freely and in good faith, whether relevant information had been disclosed, and whether the House accepted that the title carried obligations beyond private service.

Kael would answer.

Then Elias and Marcus stepped forward without him.

That part mattered.

Kael sponsored them.

He did not take the oath for them.

They had reached the final point where House authority had to stop.

Sister Meriel positioned Marcus.

Then Elias.

Elias looked toward the empty benches.

”How many people tomorrow?”

”Public gallery capacity is approximately seven hundred in this section.”

Elias’s face changed.

Marcus looked toward him.

”Seven hundred.”

”I heard.”

Kael almost laughed.

Elias turned toward Sister Meriel.

”Will it be full?”

”No.”

He relaxed.

”Probably four to five hundred.”

Relaxation died.

Kael looked toward Malrec.

”Is this necessary?”

”No.”

Elias looked hopeful.

Malrec continued. ”Neither is knighthood.”

Elias stared.

The Archdeacon walked toward one side of the cathedral.

Kael smiled.

”He has you.”

”I hate this territory.”

”No, you don’t.”

Elias sighed.

”No.”

They rehearsed the formal identification.

Elias got his name right.

Marcus got his grandfather right.

Neither stumbled.

Then Sister Meriel made them start again because Elias stepped before being called.

The second attempt went better.

The third almost looked natural.

During the fourth, Elias began speaking too quickly.

Meriel stopped him.

”You are not escaping the oath by reaching the end faster.”

”I know.”

”Then let the words exist long enough for people to hear them.”

The old knight outside the tea shop returned to Kael’s mind.

Listen during the oath.

Perhaps that was what he meant.

Not merely hearing words.

Allowing yourself to understand that you were saying them publicly and could later be judged against them.

Marcus slowed too.

The next attempt felt different.

Less rehearsed.

More deliberate.

By the time they finished, even Elias had stopped complaining.

The cathedral remained quiet.

Sister Meriel closed her folder.

”Enough.”

Elias blinked.

”That is it?”

”Yes.”

”No fifth?”

”No.”

Marcus looked toward him.

”You sound disappointed.”

”I am suspicious.”

Meriel looked toward Kael.

”Keep them out of trouble tonight.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”Why is that my responsibility?”

”They serve House Kael.”

Malrec spoke from several steps away.

”Tomorrow they become knights, assuming they survive dinner.”

Kael smiled.

”I can manage one evening.”

Darius looked toward him.

Kael frowned.

”I can.”

They ate privately that night.

Not because of rank.

Because Malrec had apparently concluded Elias did not need four hundred people watching him chew before four hundred watched him take an oath.

The meal was simple and much quieter than their earlier nights on the road.

Elias ate normally.

Marcus too.

No one spent the entire meal discussing tomorrow.

Kael deliberately asked Jessa about Blackwood instead.

”What do you think is happening without us?”

Jessa thought.

”Training.”

”Obviously.”

”Galahad arguing with builders.”

”Likely.”

”Lily preventing Milo from stealing food.”

”Definitely.”

”Damien pretending his departure isn’t getting close.”

That quieted Kael slightly.

Damien’s frontier evaluation.

Less than a few weeks now.

Another person leaving.

Temporarily.

Still leaving.

Marcus noticed.

”He’ll be fine.”

”I know.”

Elias looked toward Kael.

”You say that about everyone.”

”Because most of you are competent.”

”Most?”

Kael smiled.

Merric, seated farther down the table, raised his head.

”Should we ask?”

”No,” Jessa said.

Good answer.

They finished dinner without ceremony.

Afterward, Elias disappeared toward the guest house chapel.

Marcus went walking with Darius.

Kael considered following one of them.

Then did not.

Tomorrow belonged to them.

Not every moment before it required Kael.

Instead he returned to the square alone.

Almost.

A Black Dragon guard remained far enough away to pretend Kael was alone while still satisfying every security instruction Darius had ever written.

Kael walked toward the archive buildings.

They were closed.

The public entrance stood dark beneath evening lamps.

Tomorrow, somewhere inside, clerks would prepare new entries.

Two names from Blackwood.

Elias Thorn.

Marcus Wintermere.

The thought felt larger now that Kael had seen the shelves.

He understood what entry into the record meant differently.

The Church was not promising their names would be remembered by everyone.

Most names weren’t.

It was promising not to intentionally forget that the title had been granted.

Not to erase the decision if one of them later failed.

Not to rewrite the beginning based on the ending.

A record of trust given.

Then, if necessary, a record of what had been done with it.

Malrec’s voice came from behind him.

”You are staring at a closed building.”

Kael looked over.

The Archdeacon approached carrying no book.

”Apparently I do that.”

Malrec stopped beside him.

For several moments they looked at the archive.

Kael asked, ”How many knights in those records turned out badly?”

”Many.”

”How many became great?”

”Many.”

”How many were ordinary?”

”Most.”

That answer made Kael smile.

”People don’t think about ordinary knights.”

”No.”

”They think legendary knight or corrupt knight.”

”Stories prefer extremes.”

”What does the Church prefer?”

Malrec considered.

”Reliable.”

Kael laughed softly.

”That is not very inspiring.”

”It is when your village needs someone to arrive.”

Kael looked toward him.

Malrec continued. ”Most people will never need a knight to defeat a legendary monster or save the Empire. They may need one to escort refugees during a flood. Stop soldiers from abusing prisoners. Hold a road while civilians escape. Carry information when a commander is dead. Stand before a noble and say an order is unlawful.”

Kael thought about Tomas Pell.

The farmer could not tell a duke no without risking everything.

A knight might.

Malrec looked toward the archive.

”History remembers extraordinary moments. Institutions survive because enough people perform ordinary duties correctly.”

Kael remained quiet.

That applied to more than knights.

The road worker at Larkwell.

The marshal clearing the broken wagons.

Brother Caelen sorting petitions.

Liora treating work injuries.

Edwin maintaining Blackwood when nobody important cared about it.

No songs.

No monuments.

Still necessary.

Kael looked toward the cathedral.

”Tomorrow changes Elias and Marcus.”

”Yes.”

”Legally.”

”Yes.”

”Socially.”

”Yes.”

”But they wake up the same people.”

Malrec nodded.

”That is the danger.”

Kael frowned.

”How?”

”They may believe the title proves they became better overnight.”

Kael understood.

Victor’s championship.

Winning could become identity.

A knightly title could too.

Malrec continued. ”Tomorrow people who do not know Elias may trust him more because he is called Sir. People may move aside. Believe him. Ask him to settle disputes he does not understand. Offer him gifts. Assume he knows law he has never studied.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”Borrowed trust.”

”Yes.”

”And Marcus.”

”The same.”

”They have to grow into what strangers already assume.”

Malrec looked toward him.

”Every title works that way.”

Kael became still.

Prince.

His title had existed before he understood what government was.

People bowed before he had earned anything.

Servants obeyed.

Guards protected him.

Teachers prepared him for authority he had not yet deserved.

Perhaps Elias and Marcus were simply experiencing in one day what Kael had lived inside his entire life.

The thought was uncomfortable.

Useful too.

Malrec started away.

Kael called after him.

”Tomorrow morning?”

”Second bell.”

”You’ll be there?”

”Yes.”

”Even though you’re not officiating?”

”I reviewed them.”

That was enough.

Malrec took another step.

”Kael.”

”Yes?”

”Do not give them a speech tonight.”

Kael stared.

”I wasn’t going to.”

Malrec looked back.

”You considered it.”

Kael sighed.

”Briefly.”

”Don’t.”

”Why?”

”Because tomorrow they need to hear their own promises, not remember yours.”

Then the Archdeacon walked away.

Kael remained beneath the archive lamps.

He had wanted to say something.

Of course he had.

Something about Blackwood.

Responsibility.

Trust.

What it meant for two members of the original fifty to stand in Orinth carrying House Kael’s name.

Malrec was right.

That speech could wait.

Perhaps there would be a day when Darius needed words strong enough to keep an army standing after the plan collapsed.

Perhaps one day Kael himself would have to speak to thousands and give people a reason to remain together when fear, blood, and politics were pulling them apart.

Tomorrow was smaller.

That did not make it less important.

Elias and Marcus did not need legendary words.

They needed to understand ordinary ones.

Kael looked one last time toward the archive.

Their names were not there yet.

Tomorrow they would stand before hundreds of strangers, speak promises older than House Kael, and accept a title that would change how people saw them before it changed anything inside them.

Then the Church would open a register.

A clerk would prepare ink.

And somewhere among centuries of names, Blackwood would leave two more behind.
