The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Morning came with considerably less celebration than Damien expected.

That was probably Darius’s fault.

The previous night, Damien Ravenmoor had become the Imperial Spear Division champion after defeating Sir Corren Dain four points to three. Blackwood had celebrated with a simple dinner instead of a noble banquet, which suited Damien perfectly. There had been food, arguments about the final exchange, Elias Thorn exaggerating one of Damien’s mistakes for entertainment, and Brennar insisting that the simultaneous strike at the bell would be debated for years even though nobody outside their table cared nearly that much.

Damien had gone to sleep exhausted and victorious.

Then Darius woke him before sunrise.

”You said tomorrow,” Damien muttered as he followed the Imperial Shield across the training yard behind the lodging compound.

”It is tomorrow.”

”I thought you meant later tomorrow.”

”I did not.”

Kael stood nearby with his arms folded, watching Damien stretch stiffness from his shoulders.

”You could have warned him.”

Darius looked toward Kael. ”I did. Yesterday.”

”That was not a warning. That was a threat with a calendar.”

Damien laughed once, then immediately regretted it when his ribs reminded him how often Corren Dain’s spear shaft had found them.

Darius ignored both of them.

”Your final is over. The mistakes remain.”

Damien exhaled.

There it was.

Victory had apparently purchased him less than ten hours of peace.

Elias Thorn leaned against the fence nearby. Brennar stood beside him, still holding a cup of something hot.

Elias grinned. ”Champion.”

Damien looked toward him.

”Don’t.”

”Imperial Spear Champion Damien Ravenmoor.”

”I will throw this practice spear at you.”

”You’d miss. Your shoulder is stiff.”

Damien turned toward Darius. ”Can I throw it at him?”

”No.”

”See?” Elias said. ”Protected by Imperial authority.”

Kael shook his head.

The mood around Blackwood’s group had changed since the final, but not as much as Damien feared.

That mattered.

No one suddenly treated him like a different man.

No one bowed.

No one called him the future of anything.

He had won a tournament.

A significant tournament.

That was enough.

Darius handed him a practice spear.

”Show me your second exchange against Corren.”

Damien stared.

”The one where he hit me?”

”The one where you chose the wrong retreat.”

”That narrows nothing down.”

Kael almost smiled.

Darius pointed toward the marked section of the yard.

Damien sighed and moved into position.

The review began.

By the time the Imperial Coliseum opened its gates, Damien understood exactly how little his championship protected him from criticism.

His grip transitions had been too predictable early.

His first attempts at the boundary had been reactive rather than deliberate.

He had given Corren Dain the center too easily and then spent unnecessary energy recovering it.

The exchange that made the crowd roar—the one where Damien baited Corren toward the edge and reversed beneath his spear—had only worked because two earlier mistakes accidentally taught Corren what to expect.

Darius had called that useful adaptation.

Then he had spent another ten minutes explaining why useful adaptation did not excuse causing the problem in the first place.

Kael walked beside Damien through one of the Coliseum’s interior corridors.

”You look miserable.”

”I won yesterday.”

”I remember.”

”Darius somehow made it feel like I owe the championship an apology.”

”You made mistakes.”

Damien looked toward him.

”So did Corren.”

”Yes.”

”He did not have Darius waiting for him at sunrise.”

Kael considered.

”That’s true.”

Damien waited.

Kael smiled.

”I still wouldn’t trade.”

”Neither would I.”

That answer came immediately.

They entered the Blackwood seating section.

Today belonged to the Swordsman Division.

The semifinal bracket was displayed on the great board opposite the Imperial box.

Four names remained.

Prince Victor Aurelius Asterion

Sir Roderic Seln

Sir Edric Vale — House Varrow

Sir Joren Pellaris

Victor would face Sir Roderic Seln first.

Edric and Joren would follow.

The winners would meet in the final.

Damien sat near Elias.

”You betting?”

Elias looked offended.

”On an Imperial tournament?”

”Yes.”

”Absolutely not.”

Brennar leaned over from the next seat.

”He already owes Marcus Wintermere three silver from the quarterfinals.”

Elias frowned.

”That was an analytical disagreement.”

”You wagered money.”

”On my analysis.”

Damien laughed.

Elias looked toward him.

”You are becoming arrogant after one championship.”

”One championship more than you.”

”That was unnecessary.”

Kael sat one row ahead with Darius.

Victor had not yet entered the arena.

Kael had watched his brother carefully throughout the tournament.

Victor was aggressive.

Fast.

Confident.

At his worst, he became impatient when an opponent denied him the kind of fight he wanted.

At his best, he could turn that aggression into something much more dangerous.

His quarterfinal had shown the difference.

Sir Calden Marris had scored first.

Victor’s early instinct had been to race him—to force exchanges faster and faster until superior speed decided the match.

It had not worked.

Calden did not panic.

He used Victor’s urgency against him.

Victor adjusted.

Not by becoming passive.

By becoming selective.

He stopped treating every opening as an invitation.

He changed rhythm.

He made Calden commit first.

That adaptation had carried him to a five-to-four victory.

Kael wondered whether it would survive today.

Darius spoke without looking toward him.

”You’re staring.”

”I’m watching.”

”Different word.”

”Same thing.”

Darius finally glanced over.

”What are you expecting?”

”Victor to try to prove yesterday wasn’t an accident.”

”That is a poor reason to fight.”

”I know.”

”Does he?”

Kael looked toward the entrance tunnel.

”We’re about to find out.”

Sir Roderic Seln entered first.

He was not physically imposing.

That immediately made the crowd underestimate him.

Kael could hear it in the scattered conversations nearby.

Roderic was lean, perhaps slightly shorter than Victor, with narrow shoulders and an uncomplicated longsword carried in one hand. His armor was lighter than most semifinalists wore.

No decorated House colors.

No dramatic entrance.

He walked into the arena like a man arriving for work.

That interested Darius.

Kael noticed.

”You know him?”

”By reputation.”

”What reputation?”

”He doesn’t waste movement.”

”That sounds like something you would like.”

”I do.”

Roderic reached his mark and waited.

Victor entered to considerably more noise.

The difference was immediate.

Imperial blood carried attention.

Victor acknowledged the crowd with a brief lift of his sword, then crossed toward the center.

His expression was confident.

Not playful.

Good.

The referee explained the rules.

Standard point system.

Clean controlled scoring strikes determined by the officiating panel.

First to the match threshold or highest score at the end of regulation.

Excessive force penalized.

Boundary rules enforced.

Both men acknowledged.

Kael leaned forward slightly.

The signal sounded.

Victor moved first.

Of course he did.

But not recklessly.

That was the first good sign.

He advanced with a shallow step, sword held high enough to threaten the head while preserving his line toward Roderic’s weapon arm.

Roderic did not retreat.

He shifted less than half a step.

Victor tested with a short cut.

Roderic turned it aside.

No score.

Victor reset.

Kael felt Darius’s attention sharpen.

The second approach came faster.

Victor changed levels, threatened the shoulder, then drove toward the torso.

Roderic’s blade met his with a compact parry.

Victor disengaged before the counter.

Again, no score.

The crowd was already impatient.

Kael was not.

”He learned,” Kael said.

Darius replied, ”For two exchanges.”

”Generous.”

”Accurate.”

Victor circled.

Roderic barely followed.

That looked dangerous.

An opponent who refused to move could be slow.

Or could be controlling exactly the ground he wanted.

Victor attacked again.

This time Roderic waited until the final step.

Then his sword snapped forward.

Not hard.

Not dramatic.

A clean touch against Victor’s upper arm as Victor withdrew.

The referee raised a hand.

”Point. Sir Roderic Seln.”

One to zero.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Kael saw it from across the arena.

Darius did too.

”There.”

”What?”

”The moment.”

Kael knew what he meant.

Victor’s danger was not being behind.

It was what being behind made him want to do.

The next exchange would reveal whether he had actually changed.

Victor returned to his mark.

The signal sounded.

He accelerated.

Kael almost cursed.

Then Victor stopped.

Not completely.

One sudden half-step short of commitment.

Roderic responded.

His blade shifted toward the expected interception.

Victor had wanted that.

He changed direction instantly, cut beneath the line, and touched Roderic’s ribs.

The referee raised his hand.

”Point. Prince Victor.”

One to one.

Kael smiled.

Darius did not.

”That was better.”

Kael looked at him.

”You could sound pleased.”

”I am.”

”No one would know.”

”They don’t need to.”

The match settled into something more technical than the crowd expected.

Victor was faster.

That was obvious.

Roderic was cleaner.

That became obvious more slowly.

He did not chase Victor’s blade.

He placed his own sword where Victor wanted to pass.

Every parry seemed smaller than necessary.

Every retreat preserved balance.

Every counter arrived without visible preparation.

Victor scored the second point with a sharp attack to the wrist after forcing Roderic’s guard high.

Roderic answered less than a minute later by intercepting Victor’s step.

Two to two.

Then Roderic took the lead again.

Three to two.

Victor had tried to create pressure with repeated attacks along the same side.

The first forced movement.

The second nearly scored.

The third was anticipated.

Roderic redirected and touched Victor’s shoulder before Victor could recover.

The Coliseum erupted.

Not because the exchange was spectacular.

Because an Imperial prince was behind in a semifinal.

Victor stepped away.

Kael watched his face.

No anger.

That surprised him.

Instead, Victor looked toward Roderic’s feet.

Then his shoulders.

Then the distance between them.

He was thinking.

Darius leaned slightly forward.

”He finally noticed.”

Kael asked, ”The stance?”

”The recovery.”

Kael studied Roderic.

Then saw it.

Roderic’s defense was exceptionally economical, but not neutral.

After defending toward his right, his weight consistently settled a fraction deeper over his back leg before he reset.

Tiny.

Probably meaningless against most opponents.

Victor tested it.

He attacked left.

Roderic parried.

Victor withdrew.

Again.

Same recovery.

Victor attacked left a third time.

Roderic defended.

Victor did not disengage.

He rotated around the contact and stepped outside Roderic’s recovering foot.

Roderic tried to adjust.

Too late.

Victor’s sword touched his back shoulder.

Three to three.

The crowd roared.

Victor did not celebrate.

That was the second good sign.

The fourth point became ugly.

Not undisciplined.

Just physical.

Roderic recognized that Victor had found the recovery pattern and changed his stance.

Victor responded by increasing pressure.

Their swords struck hard enough for the sound to carry through the arena.

Roderic used a bind.

Victor tried to break it.

Roderic turned the blade.

Victor rotated his wrist.

For several seconds, neither man gained clean advantage.

Then Victor disengaged sharply.

Roderic followed.

That was unusual.

The first time he had pursued.

Victor saw it.

Kael saw Victor see it.

He yielded one step.

Then another.

Roderic pressed.

The crowd grew louder.

Victor was approaching the boundary.

Damien leaned forward.

”He’s baiting him.”

Elias nodded.

”Maybe.”

Roderic attacked.

Victor pivoted.

Roderic anticipated it.

He changed direction before Victor completed the turn.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Roderic had read the bait.

His blade came across toward Victor’s chest.

Victor barely caught it.

The impact drove him sideways.

One foot touched near the boundary line.

Roderic advanced.

Victor had almost no room.

Then he did something Kael had not expected.

He attacked directly into the pressure.

Not around it.

Not away.

Victor stepped inside Roderic’s sword.

The distance became too short for a clean cut.

Victor used his guard and shoulder to control the line, then touched Roderic’s side with the lower portion of his blade before the referee separated them.

The judges consulted.

A tense pause followed.

Then:

”Point. Prince Victor.”

Four to three.

The Imperial section erupted.

Victor exhaled slowly.

Roderic simply nodded.

Darius said, ”Risky.”

Kael looked toward him.

”Successful.”

”Those words are not interchangeable.”

”I know.”

”Good.”

Kael smiled.

Roderic tied it again.

Of course he did.

Victor became too confident after the boundary exchange and tried to recreate close pressure.

Roderic recognized the intention immediately.

He gave Victor entry.

Then turned it against him.

A clean touch to the torso.

Four to four.

The match entered its final minutes tied.

Now the Coliseum truly changed.

People stood.

Nobles who had been whispering through half the tournament stopped speaking.

Even the Imperial box had become still.

Victor rolled his shoulder.

Roderic adjusted his grip.

Kael felt something tighten in his chest.

He cared more than he wanted to admit.

Not because Victor was an Asterion.

Because Victor had changed during the tournament.

Kael wanted to know whether that change would survive pressure.

The referee called them forward.

The signal sounded.

Neither attacked.

That drew surprised noise from the crowd.

Victor waited.

Roderic waited.

Ten seconds.

Fifteen.

Victor gave a small blade movement.

Roderic did not react.

Victor stepped left.

Roderic adjusted.

Then Victor attacked.

Fast.

Not fully committed.

Roderic parried.

Victor immediately attacked again.

Different angle.

Roderic turned it aside.

Victor’s third attack came even faster.

Roderic retreated this time.

Victor followed.

Kael frowned.

Too much.

Victor was accelerating again.

The old habit.

Roderic gave ground.

Victor pressed.

Then Roderic stopped.

His counter came exactly where Kael expected.

Victor’s open side.

The blade moved.

Victor twisted away.

Barely.

Roderic missed.

Victor did not counter.

That was the important part.

Old Victor would have attacked immediately because the opening felt available.

Instead, he reset.

Darius gave the smallest nod.

Victor had recognized the trap.

Roderic had expected the counter.

When it did not come, he had to recover farther than planned.

That was Victor’s real opening.

Victor stepped in.

One cut.

Controlled.

Precise.

To Roderic’s sword arm.

The referee’s hand rose.

”Point. Prince Victor.”

Five to four.

The bell sounded almost immediately afterward.

For half a second, the arena seemed to hesitate.

Then the crowd exploded.

Victor lowered his sword.

He had won.

The applause followed him from the arena.

Kael remained seated.

He had expected to feel relief.

Instead, he found himself replaying the final exchange.

Victor had won because he did not take the first opening.

That was not the Victor Kael remembered from the early rounds.

Darius stood.

”Come.”

”Where?”

”To speak with him.”

Kael followed.

Damien called from behind them.

”Tell him champions are available for advice.”

Elias laughed.

Kael looked back.

”You won a different division.”

”Victory is universal.”

Darius kept walking.

Damien sighed.

”No one respects me.”

Victor was in the preparation corridor when they found him.

A healer had just finished checking the bruising along his arm.

Victor looked toward Kael.

”Well?”

Kael smiled.

”You won.”

Victor frowned.

”I noticed.”

Darius stepped closer.

”You almost lost.”

Victor looked at him.

”I noticed that too.”

”Why?”

Victor exhaled.

”Because Roderic made me work for every exchange.”

”That is description.”

Victor’s expression shifted.

He knew what Darius wanted.

”I started chasing the match after I went down three to two.”

”Yes.”

”I stopped.”

”Eventually.”

Victor looked irritated.

Kael almost laughed.

Darius continued. ”What won the final point?”

Victor answered more carefully.

”Not attacking when he expected me to.”

Darius nodded.

”Good.”

Victor caught the word.

He smiled.

Kael saw Darius realize it too late.

Victor’s smile widened.

Darius’s expression hardened.

”Do not.”

Kael laughed.

Victor looked toward him.

”You heard it.”

”I did.”

”Witness.”

”Absolutely.”

Darius ignored both princes.

”Your final opponent will punish worse mistakes than Roderic did.”

Victor’s amusement faded.

He looked toward the arena.

”Edric or Joren.”

”Yes.”

Kael leaned against the wall.

”Preference?”

Victor thought.

”Neither.”

”That is probably the correct answer.”

Victor looked toward Kael.

”I’d rather know.”

”You will soon.”

A horn sounded from the arena.

The second semifinal was approaching.

Sir Edric Vale against Sir Joren Pellaris.

Victor picked up his coat.

”Then let’s find out.”

The Coliseum had not calmed when they returned.

Edric Vale entered first.

Kael remembered him well.

Edric had eliminated Elias Thorn in the earlier rounds after one of the closest tactical fights of the tournament. Elias had lost by decision, eight to five, after adapting repeatedly but eventually, as Darius put it, running out of decisions rather than time.

Edric was patient.

Technically controlled.

He did not overwhelm opponents with one exceptional trait.

He simply kept finding the next correct answer.

Joren Pellaris was different.

He carried his sword with the loose confidence of someone who trusted his own reactions.

His previous matches had been more aggressive than Edric’s.

More improvisational.

He was not as explosive as Victor, but he changed tempo without warning and attacked from positions most swordsmen preferred to reset from.

Kael looked toward Victor.

His brother had become very still.

Darius sat beside them.

”Watch both.”

Victor nodded.

No jokes now.

No rivalry between siblings.

No concern about who the crowd preferred.

The next man to win would stand between Victor and the Swordsman Division championship.

Edric and Joren took their positions.

The referee raised his hand.

Kael leaned forward.

The signal sounded.

Joren moved first.

Edric waited.

Their blades met once.

Then again.

The second semifinal had begun.

And for Victor, the final had already started.
