The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Velmar disappeared behind them beneath a morning sky washed pale by overnight rain, and for the first hour Kael found himself looking backward more often than he intended.

The city had been his first real glimpse of how large Solmara actually was. Ordan’s Rest had still felt like a settlement built around travelers and Church administration, but Velmar had been unmistakably urban. Tens of thousands of people had lived inside and beyond its walls without needing Orinth, Aurelia, or any Imperial prince to make their lives important. Markets opened, courts heard disputes, nobles managed estates, schools taught children, road officials complained about budgets, and Church institutions existed beside ordinary businesses rather than replacing them. By the time the southern walls vanished behind the hills, Kael understood that he had made a mistake before ever crossing the Arven. He had imagined Solmara as one great religious institution spread across territory. In reality, it was a territory first, filled with people whose government happened to be shaped by the Imperial Church.

The road north from Velmar climbed steadily for most of the morning. Terraced farms spread across the lower hills, vineyards appeared wherever the slopes faced the sun, and stone retaining walls divided patches of cultivated land from older woodland. The road remained broad, but Kael began noticing more side routes marked with signs identifying religious houses, noble estates, schools, and settlements deeper in the interior. Some names were written beneath the seal of Solmara’s road administration. Others bore family crests or the marks of particular religious orders.

What interested him most was how often those signs existed beside one another.

A road leading toward a monastery might share a junction with one serving a noble estate. A village school could sit across from land owned by a healing order. A bridge might have been funded by a religious Chapter while the road approaching it belonged to a civic district. Nothing fit neatly into the simple picture of Church authority Kael had carried with him from Aurelia.

He was still studying one junction when Darius rode closer.

”You are doing it again.”

Kael looked toward him. ”Looking at signs?”

”Trying to govern them.”

”I am not governing anything.”

”Your expression suggests otherwise.”

Kael looked back at the junction as it disappeared behind them. ”I was thinking about how many different authorities probably meet at one road.”

”That is different from governing?”

”Yes.”

Darius considered.

”Marginally.”

Kael frowned. ”You have become less pleasant since we entered Solmara.”

”I have become more accurate.”

”That is what unpleasant people always say.”

Elias laughed several paces behind them.

Kael turned in his saddle. ”You have an oath to worry about.”

”I do. This is still funny.”

Marcus rode beside him with the expression of someone who had accepted that Elias’s nerves would come out as humor until the ceremony was finished. ”He practiced his full name twice before breakfast.”

Elias stared. ”You checked your documents before getting out of bed.”

”That was responsible.”

”You slept with the folder beside you.”

”It contains my consecration papers.”

”You hugged it.”

”I did not hug it.”

Kael looked between them.

”This is going to be a very dignified ceremony.”

Both stopped talking.

Darius continued riding.

Kael smiled.

They stopped shortly before midday at a hilltop road house maintained by a charitable order Kael had not encountered before. The building overlooked a broad valley where farms, villages, and narrow roads spread in every direction. Farther north, the land rose again, and somewhere beyond those hills lay Orinth.

Kael could not see the city yet.

That somehow made it feel closer.

The road house provided water, simple meals, basic medical care, and shelter for travelers caught by bad weather. Payment was expected from those who could afford it. Those who could not were apparently still fed.

Kael discovered that after watching a young mother approach the serving counter with two children and quietly explain something to the woman distributing bowls of lentils and bread. No coins changed hands. Nobody announced charity. The woman behind the counter simply handed over food and pointed toward an open table.

Kael watched longer than he realized.

Malrec sat across from him with a bowl of his own.

”You are staring.”

”I am observing.”

”At a woman eating lunch.”

Kael looked toward him. ”She did not pay.”

”No.”

”How does the road house fund that?”

Malrec took another spoonful before answering. ”Donations. Land income. Travelers who do pay. Grants from the order. Occasional district support during difficult years.”

”So the wealthy subsidize the poor?”

”Sometimes.”

”Required?”

”Not always.”

Kael nodded slowly.

Malrec looked at him.

”Do not turn this into a universal welfare system before dessert.”

Kael stared. ”I was not.”

”You were already calculating.”

”I was thinking about whether it scales.”

”That is calculating.”

Brother Caelen sat nearby sorting correspondence while eating. ”He has been in Solmara three days and has already tried to understand road law, mixed courts, charitable financing, Church landholding, and administrative jurisdiction.”

Kael looked toward him. ”I did not try to understand all Church landholding.”

”Only because I stopped answering.”

”That sounds like failure on your part.”

Caelen returned to his papers.

Malrec almost smiled.

Kael continued eating, then glanced toward the valley again. ”How many of these road houses are there?”

Malrec pointed his spoon at him.

Kael sighed. ”Fine.”

For several minutes, conversation shifted toward the ceremony. Sister Meriel reviewed the schedule once again while Elias listened with the strained focus of a man preparing for battle. They would reach Orinth that afternoon. The following morning would be used for final record verification, preparation, and presentation of House Kael’s sponsorship documents. The consecration itself would occur the day after.

Elias frowned immediately.

”I thought the ceremony was tomorrow.”

Sister Meriel looked at him. ”No.”

”We have been saying tomorrow.”

”You have been saying tomorrow.”

Marcus slowly turned toward Elias.

Kael covered a smile.

Elias stared at Meriel. ”When were you going to correct me?”

”I assumed you would eventually read the schedule you have carried for four days.”

Marcus looked down at the folder beside him.

Elias saw.

”Do not.”

Marcus opened it anyway.

His eyes moved down the first page.

Then he smiled.

Elias looked betrayed. ”You knew?”

”No.”

”But you checked it eight times.”

”I checked the authorization, not the ceremony schedule.”

Kael laughed.

Elias pointed toward him. ”You didn’t know either.”

”I did not claim to.”

”You’ve been talking like the ceremony was tomorrow.”

”I have been listening to you talk like the ceremony was tomorrow.”

”That is worse.”

Malrec continued eating as if none of this concerned him.

Elias looked toward him. ”You knew.”

”Obviously.”

”And said nothing.”

Malrec finally looked up. ”You passed an Imperial Knight Examination. I assumed reading remained within your capabilities.”

Marcus lowered his head to hide his laughter.

Even Darius smiled.

Elias looked around the table.

”I am surrounded by enemies.”

The mistake helped him.

Kael noticed that almost immediately.

For the rest of lunch, Elias complained about having an extra day to be nervous, but the tension he had carried since crossing the Arven loosened. The ceremony had stopped being a single approaching moment and become part of a process again. Records first. Presentation. Preparation. Then the oath.

Kael suspected that was one reason the Church did not rush candidates directly from arrival into ceremony.

He almost asked Malrec.

Then decided some things could remain observations for longer than five minutes.

Darius noticed.

”You decided not to ask.”

Kael looked at him. ”Stop doing that.”

”Doing what?”

”Watching me improve.”

Darius returned to his meal. ”I will try to endure it.”

They left the road house early in the afternoon.

The weather cleared completely as they climbed out of the valley, and for nearly two hours the road wound through increasingly populated country. Villages sat closer together. The estates grew smaller around the main road as homes, workshops, schools, vineyards, and roadside businesses competed for space. More travelers joined from intersecting routes until the Church carriage moved within a steady stream of wagons, riders, pilgrims, and pedestrians.

Then the road reached the top of a long ridge.

Everyone slowed.

Nobody ordered them to.

Orinth filled the land ahead.

Kael had seen Aurelia from a distance many times. Aurelia announced itself vertically. Palace towers, government buildings, noble estates, monuments, and the great Imperial architecture seemed designed to remind anyone approaching that power sat at the center.

Orinth was different.

It spread.

The city occupied a broad basin between low hills, larger than Velmar by enough that Kael stopped trying to estimate its population immediately. Old walls still surrounded the central districts, but the city had long since escaped them. Neighborhoods extended along every major road. Bridges crossed a river cutting through the eastern side. Towers rose above the rooftops, but they belonged to different things. Chapels. Administrative buildings. Schools. Archive complexes. Watchtowers. Hospitals. Bell towers. Noble residences. Structures Kael could not identify.

Farther north, on a raised section of ground overlooking the older city, stood several large Church complexes clustered together without forming a single palace.

That surprised him most.

He had expected one enormous central cathedral dominating everything.

There was a cathedral.

He could see it.

It was impossible not to.

Its central tower rose high enough to catch afternoon light, and two smaller towers flanked the main structure. Yet other buildings around the city were important enough that it did not swallow the skyline.

Malrec’s carriage stopped near the ridge marker.

The Archdeacon stepped out.

Kael dismounted.

For several moments neither spoke.

Then Kael said, ”How many people?”

Malrec sighed.

”I knew that would be first.”

”You expected me to ask whether the cathedral was beautiful?”

”No.”

”How many?”

”Within the main city and outer districts?”

”Yes.”

”Last formal count was a little above one hundred and eighty thousand.”

Kael turned sharply.

”Here?”

Malrec raised an eyebrow. ”No. Blackwood.”

Kael ignored that.

One hundred and eighty thousand.

Blackwood had grown quickly enough that Kael had started thinking of it as increasingly important.

Orinth reminded him what scale actually meant.

He looked toward the sprawling outer districts.

”And the surrounding region?”

”More.”

”That is not a number.”

”It was not meant to be.”

Brother Caelen dismounted nearby. Unlike Kael, he looked almost relaxed.

Home.

Kael noticed.

”You missed it.”

Caelen glanced toward him.

”Orinth?”

”Yes.”

”I missed people.”

”Not the city?”

”Cities do not write letters.”

Kael smiled faintly.

That was more revealing than most things the clerk had said during the entire journey.

Elias and Marcus had dismounted too.

Neither joked now.

Marcus looked toward the northern complexes.

”Which one has the knightly archive?”

Brother Caelen pointed toward the older western portion of the Church quarter.

”You cannot see most of it clearly from here.”

Elias followed the direction.

”Our names go there?”

”If the ceremony is completed and records are accepted, yes.”

Elias nodded.

No joke.

No complaint.

The reality had returned.

Kael looked toward both men.

Then toward the city.

”Ready?”

Elias answered first.

”No.”

Marcus nodded. ”Same.”

Kael smiled.

”Good.”

Elias looked at him. ”Why good?”

”Because if you were completely comfortable, I would be concerned.”

Malrec looked toward Kael.

”That sounded familiar.”

Kael smiled. ”I learn from experienced people.”

”Dangerous habit.”

They descended toward Orinth.

The first outer district appeared almost five miles before the old city walls. Farms gave way to dense clusters of houses, workshops, inns, warehouses, and religious hostels built along the northern road. Traffic multiplied until Solmaran road guards began directing wagon lanes at major intersections.

Kael expected Church symbols everywhere.

There were plenty.

But merchants had louder signs.

A cooper advertised barrels beside a hostel displaying a saint’s seal. A tailor’s bright red banner hung across from a school entrance marked by sober blue stone. Food vendors occupied spaces beneath old religious carvings. A cart seller shouted prices loud enough that Kael doubted prayer had survived within three buildings of him.

The city smelled alive.

Bread.

Horse manure.

Smoke.

River water.

Cooked onions.

Ink.

Leather.

Rain drying from stone.

Too many people.

Kael loved it immediately.

That worried him.

Darius noticed.

”No.”

Kael looked over. ”What?”

”You have the same expression you had when the Guild foundation was laid.”

”I am looking at a city.”

”You are looking at a city as though someone handed it to you.”

”I do not want Orinth.”

”Good.”

”I want to understand it.”

”That is usually the first stage.”

Kael laughed.

The closer they came to the old walls, the more the city’s history became visible. Newer roads had been widened around old structures rather than replacing them. A narrow stone chapel sat awkwardly in the center of one traffic circle because the roads had apparently moved while it had not. Sections of older wall had been incorporated into shops and houses. An ancient gate tower stood without any gate at all, preserved beside a modern road that simply passed around it.

Kael slowed near the tower.

Brother Caelen looked toward him.

”Do not ask me how old it is.”

”I wasn’t.”

”Good.”

”I was going to ask why they left it.”

Caelen sighed.

”I don’t know.”

Kael smiled.

”Records?”

”Probably.”

”You know where they are.”

”Yes.”

”Useful.”

Caelen gave him a suspicious look.

Progress.

They entered the old city through a gate wide enough for several wagons abreast. No inspection stopped them there. The formal entry controls had already occurred at the river and road offices. Orinth itself was not a closed sacred city. People entered and left constantly.

Inside the walls, streets narrowed.

Not everywhere.

Major roads remained broad, but side streets disappeared between rows of stone buildings four and sometimes five stories high. Covered walkways connected certain administrative complexes. Public fountains appeared at larger squares. Notice boards were everywhere.

Kael noticed those too.

Some belonged to civic districts.

Some to Church offices.

Some to guilds.

Some to schools.

One entire wall had been designated for public notices and was so crowded with paper that Kael wanted to stop immediately.

Darius looked toward it.

Then toward him.

”No.”

Kael sighed.

”You are abusing authority.”

”This is not authority.”

”What is it?”

”Experience.”

They continued.

The main road gradually climbed toward the Church quarter.

The difference became noticeable before any marker identified it.

Buildings grew larger.

Not necessarily richer.

Institutional.

Libraries.

Administrative halls.

Schools.

Residences for clergy.

Guest houses.

Legal offices.

A hospital complex with enclosed courtyards large enough that Kael counted three separate entrances before losing track.

People wore more religious clothing here, but even then the streets remained mixed with ordinary citizens, servants, students, guards, merchants delivering supplies, petitioners carrying documents, and visitors who looked as lost as Kael probably did.

Then the road opened into an enormous square.

Kael stopped.

The cathedral stood along the northern side.

Now that he was close enough to see it properly, the structure was less ornate than Aurelia’s palace complexes but no less imposing. Pale stone walls rose around a broad entrance reached by wide steps. Carved figures lined parts of the facade, though Kael recognized almost none. Large doors stood open. People moved constantly in and out.

To the east stood a long administrative building connected to several smaller structures by covered passages.

To the west stood older buildings.

Much older.

Their stone had darkened with age, and newer additions had been constructed around them without entirely hiding the original shapes.

Brother Caelen pointed.

”Knightly archives.”

Elias became completely still.

Marcus did too.

Kael looked toward the western complex.

”That?”

”Yes.”

It was not the grandest building in the square.

That felt appropriate somehow.

The archive did not need to impress people passing through.

It needed to remain.

Malrec stepped from his carriage.

For the first time since leaving Blackwood, his posture changed visibly.

Not dramatically.

But Kael saw it.

This was not merely Malrec returning to territory he knew.

This was an Archdeacon returning to an institution where he belonged.

People recognized him immediately.

A Church official descended the administrative steps.

Another called his name from across the square.

Two younger clerks bowed as they passed.

A gray-haired priest standing near the cathedral entrance noticed Malrec, smiled, and shouted, ”Still alive?”

Malrec looked toward him.

”Unfortunately for you.”

The priest laughed.

Kael stared.

Brother Caelen looked unsurprised.

The gray-haired priest approached, then recognized Kael and immediately corrected his posture.

”Your Highness.”

Kael nodded.

Malrec introduced him.

”Bishop Oren Valis. Deputy Keeper of Ordained Records and a persistent argument against mandatory retirement.”

Oren looked offended. ”I am sixty-eight.”

”You have complained about retiring since fifty-nine.”

”Because people keep suggesting it.”

Oren turned toward Kael.

”Do not listen to him. He becomes unpleasant after traveling.”

Kael smiled.

”I thought that was normal.”

Oren laughed.

Malrec looked betrayed.

Kael liked Orinth more.

Oren’s attention shifted toward Elias and Marcus.

”These are the Blackwood candidates?”

”Yes.”

Elias and Marcus stepped forward.

Oren looked them over with far less severity than Malrec had.

”Swords?”

Both nodded.

”Passed examination?”

”Yes, Bishop,” Marcus said.

”Caused Malrec paperwork?”

Elias hesitated.

Malrec answered. ”Yes.”

Oren smiled.

”Then you are halfway to becoming proper knights.”

Malrec closed his eyes.

Oren waved toward the western buildings.

”Your record packets arrived yesterday. House statement too.”

Kael became interested.

”You’ve read it?”

Oren looked toward him. ”Part of it.”

”What did you think?”

Malrec immediately said, ”No.”

Kael turned.

”What?”

”You arrived less than ten minutes ago.”

”I am having a conversation.”

”You are interrogating a Bishop about administrative documents.”

Oren looked between them.

Then smiled.

”I like him.”

Malrec sighed.

Kael looked toward Oren.

”Thank you.”

”I didn’t say that was good.”

Kael frowned.

Apparently Orinth had developed its own version of Blackwood.

The Bishop directed the Church attendants toward their accommodations while the Black Dragon riders were assigned rooms in a House guest residence maintained near the square. Kael expected some elaborate Imperial residence after officials learned a prince was coming.

Instead, he received two connected rooms in a stone guest house used for visiting nobles, Imperial officers, and senior petitioners.

He approved immediately.

Malrec did not care.

Darius checked security.

Elias and Marcus were placed together again.

Elias complained on principle.

Nobody listened.

Their luggage had barely arrived when another official came.

This one did not smile.

Canon Elian Voss was introduced as Deputy Registrar of Knightly Recognition, and he carried three folders beneath one arm.

He looked younger than Malrec, perhaps in his early fifties, with dark hair graying at the sides and an expression suggesting incorrect paperwork was a moral failing.

Elias became nervous immediately.

Voss bowed toward Kael.

”Your Highness.”

”Canon.”

Then he looked at Elias and Marcus.

”Candidates.”

Both straightened.

”Your final record verification begins tomorrow at the second morning bell.”

Elias nodded.

Marcus asked, ”What exactly is being verified?”

Voss looked almost pleased by the question.

”Identity. Examination authorization. House sponsorship. disciplinary disclosures. legal eligibility. oath form. title registration details. witness assignments. any outstanding objections submitted before consecration.”

Elias blinked.

”Outstanding objections?”

”Yes.”

”People can object?”

”Yes.”

Kael immediately became interested.

Voss noticed.

The Canon continued before he could ask.

”An objection does not automatically prevent consecration.”

Kael leaned against the table.

”What qualifies?”

Voss looked toward Malrec.

Malrec said, ”You may answer. Otherwise he will follow you.”

Voss reconsidered Kael.

”A credible allegation that could materially affect eligibility or require investigation. Fraudulent examination records. undisclosed serious misconduct. unlawful title claim. active criminal proceedings. disqualifying oath conflict. Other matters depending upon circumstance.”

”And anyone can object?”

”Anyone can submit information.”

”That is different.”

”Yes.”

Kael nodded approvingly.

Voss seemed slightly surprised.

”Do candidates receive the accusation?”

”If formal review begins, normally.”

”Anonymous?”

”Possible, but treated cautiously.”

”Political rivals?”

”Common.”

”False objections?”

”Also common.”

”Penalty?”

”Sometimes.”

Malrec looked toward Kael.

”You have reached six questions.”

Kael smiled.

”Nobody gave me a limit.”

Voss looked toward the Archdeacon.

”Is he always like this?”

Darius answered.

”Yes.”

Kael sighed.

Voss returned to Elias and Marcus.

”No formal objections are currently recorded against either candidate.”

Both visibly relaxed.

”Currently?” Elias repeated.

Voss looked at him.

”Your ceremony is not until the day after tomorrow.”

Relaxation vanished.

Kael laughed.

Voss showed no amusement.

”I recommend you spend tomorrow worrying about things you can actually control.”

Elias stared.

Malrec nodded.

”I have told him similar things.”

”He has ignored you?”

”Frequently.”

Voss looked toward Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

”I did not train that part.”

The Canon left.

Elias watched the door close.

”I preferred Malrec.”

Malrec looked offended.

”That is insulting to both of us.”

Marcus sat on the edge of one bed.

”So tomorrow is records.”

”Yes,” Malrec said.

”And after?”

”Final preparation.”

”Then ceremony.”

”Yes.”

Elias looked toward the western windows.

From there, only the upper portions of the knightly archive complex were visible.

”Can we see the book before then?”

Malrec’s expression changed slightly.

”The central register?”

”Yes.”

”No.”

Elias looked disappointed.

”Why?”

”Because your names are not in it.”

”That sounds circular.”

”It is procedural.”

Kael smiled.

”Can I?”

Malrec looked toward him.

Kael immediately regretted the question.

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because if I say yes, you will spend three hours asking about archival preservation and administrative redundancy.”

Darius turned toward the window.

Kael stared.

”I hate how predictable everyone believes I am.”

Malrec smiled faintly.

”Tomorrow afternoon.”

Kael stopped.

”What?”

”You may tour part of the archive after the candidates finish verification.”

That changed everything.

”Really?”

”Yes.”

Kael straightened.

”Which records?”

”Some.”

”How old?”

”Old.”

”Original?”

”Some.”

”Founding period?”

”Possibly.”

Malrec raised one hand.

”Tomorrow.”

Kael forced himself to stop.

Barely.

Elias looked toward Marcus.

”We are becoming secondary to the books.”

Marcus nodded.

”I noticed.”

Kael ignored them.

The rest of the afternoon was deliberately unstructured.

Malrec had arranged no formal meetings for Kael.

That surprised him.

He had expected at least several Church officials to request audiences once his arrival became known.

Apparently they had.

Malrec declined most of them.

When Kael discovered that, he confronted him in the guest house courtyard.

”How many?”

Malrec was reviewing a document.

”How many what?”

”Meeting requests.”

”Seven.”

Kael stared.

”Seven?”

”Yes.”

”From who?”

”Two Church officials. One noble representative. One school rector. One charitable order. Two people whose requests were too vague to be useful.”

”And you declined?”

”I postponed.”

”Why?”

Malrec looked up.

”You came for your knights.”

”They aren’t knights yet.”

”Then perhaps you should remain focused until they are.”

Kael thought about arguing.

Then stopped.

Malrec noticed.

”Good.”

Kael sighed.

”Do you ever worry that saying good this often makes it meaningless?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because you earn it infrequently.”

Kael walked away before committing a Church offense.

He spent the remaining daylight walking through the immediate district with Darius, Jessa, and Elias, who asked to come because sitting in the guest room had become unbearable.

Marcus stayed with Brother Caelen to review his identification records again.

Kael suspected Marcus simply enjoyed making Elias feel less prepared.

The streets around the Church quarter were quieter than the markets they had passed through, but not silent. Bookshops were everywhere. So were scribes, legal clerks, binders, seal-makers, lodging houses, restaurants, and small businesses specializing in copying documents.

Kael stopped outside one shop displaying dozens of standardized blank forms.

Elias grabbed his arm.

”No.”

Kael stared.

”You are not Darius.”

”I have learned.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius seemed almost proud.

”This is mutiny.”

Elias released him.

”You can look through the window.”

Kael did.

Marriage records.

Property transfers.

Petitions.

Travel certifications.

Witness statements.

Contract templates.

Even standardized forms for reporting damaged roads.

Kael smiled.

Elias groaned.

”You like forms now?”

”I like reducing repeated work.”

”That is how it starts.”

Darius continued walking.

Kael followed.

Farther down the street, they passed an old knight standing outside a small tea shop.

Kael knew he was a knight because the man wore the insignia openly on the clasp of his cloak, not because he looked impressive.

He was perhaps seventy.

One leg stiff.

No sword.

He held a walking stick.

Elias noticed him too.

The old man noticed Elias’s examination insignia.

”Candidate?”

Elias slowed.

”Yes, Sir.”

”Tomorrow?”

”Day after.”

The old knight nodded.

”Nervous?”

Elias smiled painfully.

”Yes.”

”Good.”

Kael almost laughed.

Apparently the entire Church had one vocabulary.

The old man continued.

”I wasn’t.”

Elias raised an eyebrow.

”What happened?”

”I embarrassed myself.”

”How?”

”I thought the oath made me important.”

Elias became more serious.

The old knight looked toward the cathedral.

”It doesn’t.”

Elias waited.

”It reminds you why being important is dangerous.”

Kael stopped walking.

The old man looked toward him then.

Recognition came slowly.

”Prince Kael.”

Kael nodded.

”Sir.”

”Sir Alden Marr.”

No House name Kael recognized.

Alden looked back toward Elias.

”What House?”

”House Kael.”

”I gathered.”

Elias smiled.

Alden tapped the walking stick once against the stone.

”Listen during the oath.”

Elias frowned. ”I’m the one saying it.”

”That is why most young men forget to listen.”

Then the old knight entered the tea shop.

Elias watched him go.

Kael said nothing.

For once, Elias did not need anyone to turn the encounter into a lesson.

They returned to the guest house as evening bells began ringing across Orinth.

The sound was unlike anything Kael had heard earlier in Solmara.

Not because every bell rang together.

They did not.

Different districts answered at slightly different times. Some bells marked evening prayer. Others announced the closing of offices. One deep bell from somewhere near the archive quarter apparently marked the end of public record access for the day.

The city changed around the sound.

Shops began closing.

Clerks left administrative buildings.

Students flooded streets.

Restaurants became busier.

People who had spent the day maintaining Solmara’s institutions went home to ordinary lives.

Kael stood in the courtyard listening.

Malrec joined him.

”You expected something more sacred.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”I think I expected sacred to look less ordinary.”

Malrec nodded.

”That mistake keeps appearing.”

Kael looked toward the cathedral.

”Does it bother you?”

”What?”

”That most people here probably spend more time thinking about dinner than religion.”

”No.”

The answer came immediately.

”Why?”

Malrec looked around the courtyard.

”Faith that only survives when people are thinking about it constantly would be fragile.”

Kael considered that.

Malrec continued. ”People pray. They also work. Argue. Raise children. Cheat at cards. Repair roofs. Pay debts. Avoid debts. Fall in love. Become bored during sermons. The Church serves people who remain people.”

Kael smiled.

”You really hate romanticized institutions.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because people excuse failures more easily when they believe an institution is inherently virtuous.”

That answer struck deeper.

Kael looked toward him.

Malrec continued before Kael could respond.

”A Church can do good and still require scrutiny. A Crown can protect people and still abuse authority. A knight can save a village and still become dangerous afterward. A prince can rebuild a territory and still make foolish decisions because success taught him to trust himself too much.”

Kael frowned.

”That last one felt targeted.”

”It was.”

Darius crossed the courtyard behind them.

”Accurate.”

Kael turned.

”You did not even hear the whole conversation.”

”I heard enough.”

Malrec smiled.

Kael looked between them.

”Solmara has made both of you unbearable.”

Darius continued walking.

Malrec followed.

Kael remained in the courtyard.

The evening bells faded gradually.

Beyond the guest house walls, Orinth continued.

One hundred and eighty thousand people.

Perhaps more.

A city older than the Empire in parts, governed through layers of Church authority, civic charters, noble rights, religious orders, offices, courts, schools, hospitals, guilds, and agreements nobody alive had personally created.

Tomorrow Kael would see part of the archive that preserved generations of knights.

Elias and Marcus would complete the records that determined exactly how their names would enter it.

And the day after, if nothing changed, they would finally stand before the Imperial Church and speak the oath publicly.

Kael looked toward the western buildings.

Somewhere inside them were names.

Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands.

Men and women who had carried the title before House Kael existed.

Some famous.

Most probably forgotten outside their own families.

Some worthy of the trust their title gave them.

Some not.

The Church had kept the names anyway.

Not because memory made everyone good.

Because forgetting made accountability impossible.

Kael stood there until the courtyard lanterns were lit.

Then he went inside.

Tomorrow, Orinth would begin opening its records to him.

For once, Kael intended to look before deciding what they meant.
