The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Damien Ravenmoor hated being given command in front of people who knew he was being tested.

Kael could tell.

Not because Damien looked nervous.

That would have been easier.

Instead, he became too still.

The third morning of the Imperial Knight Examination found two hundred seventy-nine candidates gathered on the Coliseum floor beneath a gray Aurelia sky. Overnight rain had darkened the upper stones, but the arena itself had been covered before dawn.

The central sand was dry.

The temporary village from yesterday had been dismantled.

In its place stood something much larger.

Kael leaned over the sponsor balcony.

That is not a training course.

Sir Darius Valen stood beside him.

No.

Below them, wooden fortifications divided the Coliseum into four large battlefields.

Not simple walls.

Each section contained different terrain.

One had a fortified hill with a narrow road climbing toward it.

Another contained a shallow artificial river, two bridges, and a cluster of damaged buildings.

The third looked like farmland surrounding a small walled supply depot.

The fourth—

Kael frowned.

Is that a fort?

Half of one.

The structure occupied nearly a quarter of the Coliseum floor.

Wooden towers.

Outer barricades.

An open gate.

A central command yard.

Two side approaches.

A raised position near the rear.

Colored banners identified objectives.

Red.

Blue.

Yellow.

White.

Kael looked toward Darius.

How many people are they putting into this?

Enough to create mistakes.

Of course.

Lily sat behind them with Edwin Ashcombe and several House Kael records.

She had become increasingly comfortable in Aurelia’s noble sections.

Not relaxed.

Comfortable.

There was a difference.

She leaned forward.

Which one is Damien’s?

Darius pointed toward the half-fort.

Kael looked.

That one?

Yes.

How many under him?

Darius gave him a look.

Kael frowned.

What?

You already assume he is commanding.

Kael paused.

Fair.

Darius returned his attention to the arena.

Today candidates will be assigned command positions, subordinate positions, and specialist roles by draw.

Some will command.

Some will have to follow people they dislike.

Some will receive authority halfway through a scenario.

Some will lose it.

Kael nodded.

Better.

Why?

Because real armies do not ask whether everyone likes the officer before arrows begin falling.

Darius looked toward him.

And because command is not the only thing being tested.

Following well matters too.

Kael thought of Edric.

House Varrow.

Competing loyalties.

Damien’s natural leadership.

Victor’s independence.

Marcus’s pride.

Leon quietly supporting people around him.

Elias watching everything.

Today could hurt all of them differently.

Good.

That meant the test had a purpose.

Grand Herald Ken entered the central platform.

The crowd quieted more quickly than the first two days.

By now Aurelia understood the rhythm.

The Imperial Knight Examination was not simply entertainment.

Not yet.

The tournament would satisfy that hunger later.

For now, candidates were still being stripped down to whatever remained after strength, reputation, and sponsorship were taken away.

The Herald raised his staff.

Today is the Command and Conduct Review.

A large board lit behind him.

Four rules appeared.

COMPLETE THE ASSIGNED OBJECTIVE.

PRESERVE YOUR FORCE WHEN REASONABLE.

PROTECT NONCOMBATANTS WHERE PRESENT.

OBEY LAWFUL COMMAND — CHALLENGE UNLAWFUL OR IMPOSSIBLE COMMAND THROUGH PROPER MEANS.

Kael looked at the last one.

That one is going to cause problems.

Darius nodded.

Good.

The Herald continued.

A candidate assigned command may pass while losing the scenario.

A candidate assigned subordinate duty may fail while their team wins.

Victor Ravenshade’s voice carried from the candidate formation below.

Of course.

Several nearby candidates laughed.

Sir Maelin Ors turned her head.

Victor immediately looked forward.

Kael smiled.

The Herald continued.

Command is not measured by how loudly others obey you.

Conduct is not measured only when you are in charge.

Today, some of you will discover whether people follow you because they must—

—or because your judgment gives them reason to.

The crowd reacted differently to that.

Less cheering.

More attention.

Kael looked down toward Damien.

This one mattered.

The first assignments appeared on the public board.

Names shifted beneath battlefield headings.

Squad designations.

Roles.

Command hierarchy.

Kael scanned quickly.

Leon Ashford appeared under River District, Second Squad.

Subordinate swordsman.

Victor Ravenshade under Fort District, Third Squad.

Scout-response fighter.

Marcus Wintermere under Supply District, First Squad.

Reserve heavy swordsman.

Elias Thorn under Hill District, Second Squad.

Second-in-command.

Then—

Damien Ravenmoor.

Kael found it.

FORT DISTRICT — FIRST COMPANY

ACTING COMPANY COMMANDER

Kael exhaled.

There.

Darius said nothing.

Kael looked at him.

You’re not even going to pretend you aren’t interested?

I am interested.

That was almost enthusiasm by Darius standards.

Damien’s company contained thirty candidates.

Not Black Dragon soldiers.

Candidates.

Temporary ranks beneath him included three squad leaders.

One was unfamiliar.

One wore Duke Carthain’s white lion.

And the third—

Kael recognized the blue armor.

Edric Vale.

Kael smiled faintly.

Interesting.

Darius’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Very.

Victor belonged to Damien’s company too.

Third squad.

Not command.

Mira Solenne was there.

Scout-response section.

Brennar Holt served as second squad leader beneath Edric?

Kael checked.

No.

Brennar commanded Second Squad.

Edric commanded First.

Another candidate named Helena Dorran, sponsored by Marchioness Sabine Greymark, commanded Third.

Three squad leaders.

Damien above all of them.

Kael leaned back.

This is going to be ugly.

Darius nodded.

Probably.

The Fort District scenario began with a map.

Damien received it.

Thirty candidates gathered around a wooden planning table inside the simulated fort.

No weapons beyond blunted examination gear.

Damien carried a spear.

Edric had a sword.

Brennar a sword.

Helena Dorran carried a long-handled axe.

Victor stood farther back with Mira and four other candidates assigned mobile response.

The examiner read the scenario.

The fort protected an evacuation road.

Two hundred simulated civilians would pass behind it over the next forty-five minutes.

Enemy forces approached from the south and east.

The fort could not be abandoned until the third bell.

Supplies inside:

Four barrels of water.

Limited arrows.

Two healer stations.

One reserve gate beam.

Three signal horns.

Thirty defenders.

Damien studied the map.

The examiner continued.

Enemy strength unknown.

Possible mounted element.

Possible infiltrators.

Reinforcement unlikely before the third bell.

Then the examiner handed Damien a sealed command order.

Damien opened it.

Kael could not read from the balcony.

The viewing crystal enlarged it for the audience.

HOLD THE FORT UNTIL THE THIRD BELL. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW THE SOUTH GATE TO FALL.

Kael immediately frowned.

Too specific.

Darius nodded.

Damien read it twice.

Then looked at the map.

Edric asked.

Orders?

Damien pointed.

Brennar, Second Squad on east wall.

Helena, Third Squad holds interior reserve and healer yard.

Edric, First Squad south gate.

Victor, Mira, mobile response between south and east.

Victor looked relieved to have movement.

Damien continued.

Nobody pursues beyond the outer barricades.

If either wall becomes impossible to hold, fall inward by squad.

Edric frowned.

The order says south gate cannot fall.

Damien looked at him.

I know.

Then why prepare retreat?

Because if it falls anyway, I prefer knowing what happens next.

Edric said nothing.

Brennar smiled faintly.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Good?

Darius replied.

Basic.

Kael sighed.

Of course.

The first attack came from the east.

Not south.

Thirty actors in padded enemy colors rushed the lower barricades beneath simulated arrow fire.

Brennar immediately shifted his squad into two ranks.

Front line shields and swords.

Second line longer weapons.

Good spacing.

No crowding.

Damien watched from the central command platform.

Did not interfere.

Kael noticed.

Darius did too.

Brennar’s people held.

The attackers tested the wall.

Withdrew.

Second attack.

Stronger.

Still east.

Edric looked toward Damien.

They’re drawing us.

Damien nodded.

Probably.

Do we reinforce?

Not yet.

Edric frowned.

Brennar has it.

Damien’s eyes remained on the south road.

Victor stood nearby.

I hate waiting.

Damien answered.

Good.

Why good?

Because if you hate it, you might notice when impatience starts making decisions.

Victor stared.

You have been spending too much time with Sir Darius.

Kael laughed.

Darius did not.

The first bell rang.

Fifteen minutes.

Civilians continued moving along the rear road.

Actors carrying bundles.

Children.

Elderly.

Wagons.

It would be easy to forget them.

The audience could see both.

Fort in front.

Evacuation behind.

Then a signal flag rose from the south.

Enemy movement.

Edric straightened.

Here.

A larger force appeared.

Forty actors.

Some carrying shields.

Two pushing a wooden ram.

A mounted element remained farther behind.

Damien looked toward the east wall.

Brennar still engaged.

Then south.

Edric asked.

Reserve?

Damien shook his head.

First Squad holds gate.

Mobile response behind you.

Helena remains center.

Edric’s jaw tightened.

That’s a lot for ten people.

Damien looked at him.

Then make them believe it’s more.

Edric paused.

Then smiled slightly.

He understood.

He sent two people to the upper gate platform.

Ordered them to change positions after every simulated arrow release.

From below, it looked like four archers instead of two.

He moved shields across the gate interior to create noise.

Victor watched.

That’s clever.

Damien answered.

Then remember it.

The south attack hit.

Hard.

The ram struck the gate.

Once.

The wood shook.

Edric’s people braced.

Second strike.

A defender stumbled.

Third.

The reserve beam cracked slightly.

Edric shouted.

Reset!

His squad changed positions.

Two at the beam.

Three guarding the opening points.

Others above.

Victor paced behind them.

Damien kept him back.

Not yet.

The ram struck again.

Then arrows came from the east side of the south force.

One simulated hit marked an upper defender wounded.

The examiner tied a red sash around the candidate’s arm.

Injured.

Edric looked toward Damien.

Now?

Damien shook his head.

Not Victor.

He pointed toward Helena.

Send two.

Helena immediately detached two reserve candidates.

They moved.

Kael leaned forward.

Why not Victor?

Darius answered.

Mobile response is too valuable to spend on a problem still contained.

Kael nodded.

Every person committed somewhere became unavailable somewhere else.

He understood.

Then the east wall broke.

Not the wall itself.

The actors found a gap beneath one barricade and forced three people through.

Brennar’s formation turned.

Too slowly.

One attacker reached the inner lane.

Victor moved before Damien spoke.

Damien shouted.

Victor!

Victor stopped.

Actually stopped.

Halfway.

Damien pointed east.

Take Mira and two.

Contain breach.

Do not cross outer wall.

Victor nodded.

Moved.

That mattered.

Old Victor might already have been there without permission.

Now he waited half a heartbeat for command.

Enough.

He and Mira reached the east lane.

One attacker swung a padded mace.

Victor ducked.

Mira struck the man’s leg.

Another candidate blocked the second.

Victor intercepted the third before he reached the healer yard.

He did not chase after the actor withdrew toward the wall.

Good.

Brennar closed the gap.

East held again.

Damien looked toward Victor.

Return center.

Victor obeyed.

Mira followed.

Kael smiled faintly.

Small growth.

But visible.

Second bell.

Thirty minutes.

Half the civilian column had cleared.

Then everything became worse.

A Registry official approached Damien.

Messenger.

The actor handed him a sealed slip.

Damien opened it.

The viewing crystal enlarged the message.

IMPERIAL OFFICER APPROACHING NORTH ROAD WITH THIRTY SOLDIERS. OPEN REAR GATE FOR REINFORCEMENT.

Kael frowned.

There had been no north threat.

Darius’s attention sharpened.

Damien looked toward the rear road.

Civilians still moving.

A moment later, an actor in Imperial colors appeared with a column.

Thirty.

He shouted from outside the north gate.

By order of the Imperial Third Legion, open!

Damien did not move.

Edric called from the south.

Reinforcements!

Damien shouted back.

Hold your gate.

Then turned to Helena.

Verification?

She looked at the message.

Seal looks right.

Looks?

Damien asked.

She frowned.

I don’t know Third Legion seals.

One candidate did.

A young man from a provincial military household.

He stepped forward.

I do.

Damien handed him the message.

The candidate examined it.

Then looked up.

Wrong wax.

Kael smiled.

There.

The seal shape was correct.

Color wrong?

The candidate nodded.

Third Legion uses black-red field wax for active deployment, not plain Imperial red.

Damien looked toward the north gate.

Do not open.

The supposed Imperial officer shouted again.

Damien walked to the wall.

Identify commanding officer.

Captain Serrik Mal.

Unit?

Third Legion, Ninth Cohort.

The military candidate beside Damien whispered.

No Ninth Cohort.

Damien called back.

There is no Ninth Cohort.

The actor smiled.

Then drew his sword.

The thirty supposed reinforcements rushed the rear barricade.

The Coliseum erupted.

Infiltration force.

Behind the civilians.

Worst possible position.

Damien turned.

Helena!

Already moving.

Her reserve squad formed.

Mira.

Victor.

North.

Damien looked toward the civilian column.

Stop evacuation?

Helena asked.

No.

Keep them moving.

North attackers hit.

Now Damien had three fronts.

East.

South.

North.

Thirty defenders originally.

Already several simulated wounded.

No reinforcements.

Kael felt the pressure even from the balcony.

Darius said quietly.

Now we see him.

Damien climbed onto the central platform.

Not to fight.

To see.

South gate shaking under ram.

East wall holding but strained.

North rear barricade under attack.

Civilians in the middle.

He could not be everywhere.

That was the test.

Kael understood.

Leadership S did not mean Damien personally solved each problem.

It meant choosing who did.

Damien shouted.

Brennar!

The guard captain looked from the east wall.

Status?

Holding!

Can you give me two?

Brennar looked at the attackers.

Then his people.

One!

Damien nodded.

Send one.

He did not demand two.

Good.

Then:

Edric!

No answer.

Gate ram struck again.

Damien shouted louder.

Edric!

Holding!

Can you shorten line?

No!

Immediate.

Honest.

Damien accepted it.

Helena!

North stable for maybe two minutes!

Damien looked at the civilian road.

Then toward the inner gate.

He made the choice.

Abandon east outer barricade.

Brennar froze.

What?

Fall to inner lane.

Damien pointed.

Give ground.

Narrow your front.

Brennar understood.

He hated it.

But understood.

Second Squad withdrew from the east wall.

Enemy actors surged through.

The crowd reacted.

From above, it looked like defeat.

But the inner lane was narrower.

Five defenders could hold where eight had been needed outside.

Three candidates became free.

Damien sent two north.

One to south wounded relief.

Darius’s expression changed slightly.

Kael saw it.

There.

A command decision.

Lose space.

Gain people.

Then the south gate cracked.

Not open.

Cracked.

Edric shouted.

Beam failing!

Damien moved toward him.

He stopped halfway.

No.

If he went personally, central command vanished.

Instead he called Victor.

Ravenshade!

Victor turned from the north lane.

Yes!

South gate.

Take two.

Victor’s face changed.

He wanted it.

Damien pointed at him.

Do not chase.

Victor shouted back.

I know!

Mira laughed while fighting.

He knows!

Victor ran south.

Kael looked at Darius.

You saw that.

Yes.

You can smile.

No.

The south gate failed.

The ram punched through the central planks.

Actors rushed the opening.

Edric’s squad met them.

Victor arrived from the side.

Not front.

Good angle.

He struck one attacker across the shoulder.

Ducked another.

A third moved past him.

Victor turned—

Then stopped himself from pursuing because the gate opening mattered more.

He returned.

Held line.

Edric saw.

Their old similarities.

Both once chased objectives too far.

Now both remained.

The first attackers were pushed back.

But the gate could no longer close.

Edric shouted toward Damien.

Gate is lost!

The written order:

Under no circumstances allow the south gate to fall.

Kael felt it.

Here.

The contradiction.

What did Damien do?

Damien looked at the broken gate.

Then at the third bell tower.

Still several minutes.

He could throw every remaining reserve south.

Maybe hold the physical gate.

But north infiltration threatened civilians.

East remained engaged.

He looked toward the order.

Then shouted.

Edric! Fall to second barricade!

Edric stared.

The order says—

I know what it says!

The crowd quieted around them.

Damien continued.

Gate is already broken. I’m not spending the company pretending wood isn’t broken.

Edric hesitated.

Then nodded.

First Squad withdrew.

Not running.

Fighting retreat.

Victor covered.

Mira moved from north to help at the center split.

The south gate fell completely.

A red flag rose above it.

OBJECTIVE CONDITION FAILED

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Would that fail Damien?

Darius did not move.

Of course not.

Not yet.

The enemy poured through.

But now they entered a narrow inner courtyard.

Damien had already repositioned Helena’s remaining reserve along the side.

Brennar held the east lane.

Edric formed south line.

Victor and Mira became the connector between them.

Three smaller defensive fronts instead of one stretched outer perimeter.

Better.

The actors had numbers.

Damien had structure.

Kael saw it.

The fort had been designed to tempt candidates into defending everything.

Damien had finally stopped.

He defended what mattered.

The evacuation road.

Civilians continued behind them.

Third bell approached.

Then another complication.

A candidate on east line fell.

Red sash across chest.

Simulated severe wound.

Brennar shouted for healer.

Both healer actors were at north.

Damien looked.

Distance.

If he pulled one—

North line might collapse.

He shouted to Elias—

Then remembered Elias wasn’t in this battlefield.

Kael almost smiled at his own instinct.

Blackwood habits.

Damien looked at the wounded candidate.

Then at another defender.

Can you move him?

Under attack.

No.

Damien made the decision.

Leave him until lane clears.

Kael felt that one.

Hard.

The wounded candidate lay exposed.

Not being struck because examination actors followed safety rules.

But in scenario terms—

Danger.

Darius watched Damien’s face.

No easy answer.

Brennar shouted.

We can get him!

Damien answered.

Not while three of you are holding six!

The candidate on the ground heard.

That mattered too.

Damien had chosen the line.

Not the individual.

Different from yesterday when he chased a missing husband.

Growth?

Or overcorrection?

Kael did not know.

Good.

The examiner would decide later.

Third bell.

The entire battlefield froze.

Actors lowered weapons.

Candidates stopped.

The Coliseum erupted.

Damien stood in the central yard.

Sweating.

Breathing hard despite barely fighting.

Command had exhausted him without sword or spear exchanges.

Kael understood something.

Fighting spent the body.

Command spent everything else.

The results appeared.

CIVILIANS EVACUATED: 194 / 200

SIMULATED DEFENDERS LOST: 7

SOUTH GATE: FALLEN

EAST OUTER POSITION: ABANDONED

NORTH INFILTRATION: CONTAINED

EVACUATION ROAD: HELD UNTIL THIRD BELL

PRIMARY ORDER: PARTIAL FAILURE

STRATEGIC PURPOSE: ACHIEVED

Damien stared at the board.

Edric removed his helmet.

Victor dropped onto the ground.

I hated that.

Mira sat beside him.

You say that every day.

Because every day gets worse.

Brennar looked toward Damien.

You left Jace in the east lane.

The wounded candidate.

Damien’s expression tightened.

I know.

Brennar did not accuse.

Just stated.

Damien nodded.

I know.

That would come back.

The judgment panel assembled.

This time all Four Imperial Shields sat together.

The Coliseum reacted immediately.

Darius took the left seat.

Seris beside him.

Garran.

Calista.

Registry officials sat below.

Damien stood first.

Kael leaned forward.

Sir Garran spoke.

Company Commander Ravenmoor.

Why did you abandon the south gate?

Damien answered.

Because it had already ceased functioning as a gate.

Garran’s eyebrow rose.

The command order said under no circumstances allow it to fall.

Yes, Sir.

You disobeyed.

Yes.

The audience murmured.

Damien continued.

If I had committed the reserve there after the breach, the north line would have opened into the evacuation road.

Calista asked.

So you chose civilians over the written objective?

Damien paused.

No, Lady.

Interesting.

Calista’s eyes sharpened.

Explain.

I chose the reason the fort existed over the piece of the fort named in the order.

Silence.

Darius looked directly at Damien.

Kael felt the words.

The reason the fort existed.

Evacuation.

Not wood.

Calista continued.

Convenient reasoning after failure.

Damien nodded.

It could be.

That answer surprised her.

He continued.

If the south gate had remained defensible, I would have held it.

It wasn’t.

So I changed the defense.

Seris spoke.

Why abandon the east outer barricade?

Too many people holding too much ground.

Did you consider the morale effect of visibly yielding a wall?

Yes.

And?

I decided losing morale was better than losing bodies.

Sir Garran leaned back.

Seven simulated defenders lost anyway.

Damien’s jaw tightened.

Yes.

Then Brennar’s concern.

Darius finally spoke.

Candidate Jace Orlan.

The wounded man left in east lane.

Damien’s face changed.

Yes, Sir.

Why did you leave him?

Because retrieving him required two defenders during active pressure.

Could you have saved him?

Possibly.

Would that have collapsed the lane?

Possibly.

Darius stared.

You dislike that answer.

Yes.

Why?

Because I don’t know whether I made the right choice.

Good.

Damien looked up.

Darius continued.

A dangerous commander remembers every decision as correct because he survived it.

Damien absorbed that.

Then Darius asked.

What would you do differently?

Damien thought for several seconds.

Assign casualty extraction before the attack begins.

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Damien continued.

I planned walls.

Reserves.

Signals.

I did not assign who pulls wounded from each section.

So when Jace fell, rescue became an improvisation.

Darius nodded.

There.

Not the individual choice.

The planning failure before it.

Damien saw it too.

His expression tightened.

Yes, Sir.

Sir Garran looked toward the Registry slate.

Acting Company Commander Damien Ravenmoor.

Primary order partially failed.

Strategic objective achieved.

Command adaptation strong.

Resource distribution strong.

Casualty preparation weak.

Verification discipline strong.

He paused.

Pass.

Kael exhaled.

Damien did too.

Then Garran added.

High command recommendation for continued assessment.

The Coliseum reacted.

Kael looked toward Darius.

High command recommendation?

Darius answered quietly.

Means the judges want to see him lead again someday.

Not necessarily today.

Kael smiled.

Damien heard the crowd.

Did not smile.

Good.

Edric Vale came next.

Calista questioned him.

When ordered to withdraw from the south gate, why did you hesitate?

Edric answered honestly.

Because the written order said the gate could not fall.

And?

I thought Commander Ravenmoor was violating it.

Did you believe he was wrong?

For perhaps five seconds.

Why obey?

Edric looked toward Damien.

Because he still had the entire battlefield.

I had one gate.

Calista’s eyebrow rose.

Good answer.

Edric continued.

And because once I saw the inner positions, I understood the reason.

Would you have obeyed if you still disagreed?

Edric paused.

If the order was lawful and not obviously catastrophic, yes.

Then challenge afterward.

Darius looked at him.

Better.

Edric nodded.

Pass.

No warning this time.

That mattered.

Victor stood before Darius.

Of course.

Kael almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Darius asked.

Why did you move toward the east breach before receiving command?

Victor grimaced.

Instinct.

Was it wrong?

Victor thought.

Yes.

Then stopped.

Not automatically.

Darius waited.

Victor continued.

Someone had broken through.

But I wasn’t the only reserve.

I moved because I wanted to do something.

There.

Darius nodded.

What stopped you?

You shouted.

The crowd laughed.

Darius did not.

Victor corrected.

And because I remembered I didn’t know what Damien needed me for.

Better.

Darius asked.

At the south gate, an enemy actor passed you. Why didn’t you pursue?

Victor smiled faintly.

Because I finally learn eventually.

Darius stared.

Victor became serious.

Because keeping the breach contained mattered more than me catching one person.

Pass.

Victor blinked.

That’s it?

Darius looked at him.

Would you like additional criticism?

No, Sir.

Pass is excellent.

He left quickly.

Kael laughed.

Mira passed.

Brennar passed with a note that he challenged Damien appropriately without undermining command.

Helena Dorran received one of the highest reserve-management scores in the group.

Kael wrote down her name.

Marchioness Sabine Greymark had brought someone worth watching.

Sabine saw Kael writing.

Across the noble stands, her eyes met his.

No smile.

No nod.

But she knew.

Politics again.

Leon Ashford’s command trial happened after midday.

He was not company commander.

He was assigned Second Squad leader beneath a noble candidate from House Carthain named Roderic Seln, a veteran retainer in his mid-thirties.

Their battlefield was the River District.

Objective:

Move three supply wagons across one of two bridges before the second bell.

Protect at least two wagons.

Enemy presence possible.

Civilians present in nearby houses.

Kael looked at the map.

One stone bridge.

One wooden bridge.

Which is trapped?

Darius looked at him.

Why must one be trapped?

Because this examination hates happiness.

Sir Corren laughed.

Darius did not answer.

The horn sounded.

Roderic immediately chose the stone bridge.

Strongest.

Obvious.

Leon inspected the wagon wheels.

Then the bridge.

No argument.

First wagon crossed.

Fine.

Second.

Halfway.

A signal horn blared.

The stone bridge was declared compromised.

Simulated explosive runes beneath the central span.

Candidates had two minutes before destruction.

Roderic shouted.

Push!

Leon looked at the wagon.

Second almost across.

Third still west.

Civilians appeared from the nearby houses.

Actors running toward the bridge.

There it was.

Chaos.

Roderic ordered everyone to move the third wagon onto the stone bridge before it failed.

Leon looked at the wooden bridge.

Narrower.

Longer route.

But intact.

He shouted.

Third wagon to wood!

Roderic turned.

I ordered stone!

Second wagon isn’t clear!

We’ll make it!

Leon looked at the civilians reaching the road.

No.

Roderic’s expression hardened.

You are subordinate.

Yes.

Leon pointed toward the bridge.

And there are people on it now.

The first civilians had entered the stone crossing.

Roderic cursed.

Then changed.

Fine. Third wagon wood. Leon, take it.

No ego.

Good.

Leon moved.

His squad redirected the third wagon toward the wooden bridge.

Then attackers appeared.

Mounted actors on the western road.

The drivers panicked.

Leon put two candidates rear.

Two beside wagon.

One forward checking bridge planks.

Steady.

No dramatic brilliance.

Exactly Leon.

Then one wheel stuck between boards.

Attackers approaching.

A candidate shouted.

Leave it!

Leon looked at the cargo.

Medicine markings.

Grain.

Essential supply.

Then enemy distance.

He ordered:

Unload two crates.

Lighten rear.

Two people lift wheel.

One guard.

They did.

Wheel came free.

Lost thirty seconds.

Attackers reached them.

Leon fought only when needed.

One block.

One counter.

Then returned to wagon movement.

The whole time.

Objective.

Not duel.

The third wagon crossed.

Two of three secured.

Stone bridge collapsed in simulation with the second wagon barely across.

Roderic had saved it too.

All three supplies survived.

Four civilians remained west but protected in buildings.

Strong result.

Leon passed easily.

More importantly, Kael noticed Roderic Seln approached Leon afterward.

Not examiner.

Candidate.

He offered his forearm.

Leon accepted.

Respect.

Marquis Oren’s advice returned.

Watch who people speak to.

Kael remembered.

Marcus received no command.

That bothered him.

Which was probably why the examiners did it.

He served as ordinary swordsman beneath a young Baroness-sponsored captain who was physically weaker than him and several years younger.

Talia Morn, twenty-two.

Kael did not know her sponsor.

Lily checked the registry.

Baroness Nerys Halden.

Small eastern wine territory.

Kael nodded.

Talia was small.

Fast voice.

Clear orders.

Marcus followed.

At first.

The scenario required defending three grain wagons through farmland while simulated raiders attacked in waves.

Talia ordered Marcus to stay at the rear wagon.

Nothing happened there for ten minutes.

Marcus watched fighting at the front.

He hated it.

Kael could see.

Then a front candidate fell.

Marcus stepped forward.

Talia shouted.

Stay rear!

Marcus stopped.

His face showed everything.

The rear wagon looked safe.

The front needed strength.

Another attack.

He moved one step.

Then stopped again.

Kael looked at Darius.

This is torture for him.

Yes.

Then the rear ditch exploded with actors.

Ambush.

Six raiders rose from hay cover.

Marcus’s eyes widened.

Talia had been right.

Or lucky.

Maybe both.

Marcus had no time to think.

He met them.

First actor rushed.

Marcus used controlled Aura.

One strike to shield.

Not full force.

Second came side.

Marcus pivoted.

Third attacked wagon driver.

Marcus stepped between.

He could not chase anyone.

Had to anchor.

Exactly what he hated.

And he did it.

When the raiders withdrew, Talia looked at him.

Still think front needed you more?

Marcus breathed hard.

No.

She smiled.

Good.

Marcus almost laughed.

Later, the panel passed him with improved conduct marks and no additional Aura warning.

He looked more satisfied by that than his Foundation score.

Growth again.

Elias Thorn’s command trial was different.

He received second-in-command under a noble-born candidate named Lysa Corran, sponsored by Duchess Celene Morcant.

Their objective involved escorting a messenger through a narrow hill road while identifying which of three guides was secretly feeding information to enemies.

No immediate combat.

Observation.

Kael smiled.

This suited Elias.

Which meant the exam would probably twist it.

Three guides.

One talked too much.

One barely spoke.

One appeared perfectly competent.

Lysa suspected the quiet man.

Elias watched feet.

Hands.

Responses.

At the first fork, all three guides pointed left.

Elias frowned.

Why?

Lysa asked.

He looked at the competent guide.

Your boots.

The man looked down.

Mud on outer edge.

What about it?

You said you came from the left road this morning.

That road climbs north.

Mud would collect inner edge from the slope.

The guide’s expression changed.

Kael leaned forward.

There.

Elias continued.

You came from right.

The guide ran.

The quiet man tackled him.

Combat erupted from the ridge anyway.

The spy had already signaled.

Lysa responded fast.

Good commander.

Elias identified the problem but too late to prevent contact.

They protected the messenger.

Passed.

The panel praised Elias’s observation but warned he waited too long to voice suspicion.

Again.

Observation becoming inaction.

Exactly Sir Maelin’s earlier warning.

Elias accepted it.

No excuses.

By late afternoon, the Command and Conduct Review had reduced the field again.

Some failures were spectacular.

One candidate refused a subordinate’s correct warning because the subordinate was common-born.

His unit lost the simulated objective.

Fail.

Another noble candidate surrendered command voluntarily after realizing a veteran subordinate understood river crossings better.

Pass with high judgment.

A woman sponsored by Duchess Celene Morcant lost every supply wagon but evacuated all civilians after discovering the scenario’s bridge was intentionally unsafe.

Pass.

A provincial swordsman won his battle and failed because he ordered simulated prisoners executed after the scenario ended.

Immediate elimination.

Seraphine left the stands during that judgment.

Kael noticed.

Elena stayed.

So did Cassian.

Then came the moment that changed the day.

A candidate bearing Prince Cassian’s colors stood before the Four Shields.

Arden Kessler.

Twenty-seven.

Sword candidate.

Excellent physical scores.

High Aura.

Strong command performance.

His squad had won efficiently.

Very efficiently.

Too efficiently.

Sir Garran questioned him.

You ordered the eastern house burned.

Yes, Sir.

Why?

Enemy archers inside.

Civilians?

Three.

Could not evacuate safely.

So you burned it.

Yes.

What alternatives did you consider?

Arden answered.

Assault would cost soldiers.

Waiting would risk mission time.

Sir Garran’s expression hardened.

And the three civilians?

Necessary loss.

The Coliseum quieted.

Cassian sat forward.

Kael watched him.

No visible expression.

Seris Vaelor spoke.

Did you attempt negotiation?

No.

Why?

Unnecessary.

Darius looked at Arden.

Did you confirm all three civilians were unable to leave through the rear?

No.

Why not?

Arden hesitated.

Time.

Darius’s voice became colder.

How much time remained?

Arden knew the number.

Eight minutes.

Could a scout have checked the rear in less than eight?

Possibly.

Did you send one?

No.

Darius nodded.

You did not sacrifice civilians because there was no other option.

You sacrificed them because checking for another option was slower than fire.

Arden’s face tightened.

The objective was completed.

Sir Garran answered.

Yes.

Very well.

The candidate relaxed slightly.

Then Garran said:

Failed.

The entire Coliseum erupted.

Not cheers.

Shock.

Arden stared.

Sir—

Failed.

I completed every military objective.

Darius leaned forward.

You are applying to become a knight.

Not a siege engine.

Silence.

Kael felt that sentence strike the entire arena.

Arden looked toward Cassian’s balcony.

Instinctively.

Everyone followed.

Cassian stood.

Seris looked toward him.

Arden’s face changed.

Hope?

Fear?

Cassian spoke from the Imperial balcony.

The Shields rendered judgment.

His voice carried through the arena.

Return your candidate insignia.

Nothing else.

No rescue.

No favor.

No House protection.

Arden went pale.

Then bowed.

Yes, Your Highness.

He removed Cassian’s candidate ribbon first.

Then the Registry insignia.

And walked out.

Kael watched Cassian sit again.

Interesting.

Very.

Seraphine had returned in time to see it.

She did not look pleased.

Marcus Asterion, Fifth-ranked heir, looked thoughtful.

Elara wrote something.

Elena simply watched Arden leave.

Different heirs.

Different lessons.

At sunset, the board rose.

Two hundred seventy-nine candidates had entered the day.

Two hundred and eleven remained.

Sixty-eight eliminated.

Blackwood searched immediately.

Damien.

Pass.

Leon.

Pass.

Victor.

Pass.

Marcus.

Pass.

Elias.

Pass.

Mira.

Pass.

Brennar.

Pass.

Edric.

Pass.

All eight.

Victor stared.

We’re still here.

Mira looked at him.

Disappointed?

Terrified.

Good.

Marcus looked toward the next day’s heading.

FINAL IMPERIAL KNIGHT DETERMINATION — PHASE ONE

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Sir Corren approached.

What does phase one mean?

Kael asked.

Corren answered.

Records review.

Cumulative scoring.

Formal law and oath questioning.

Healer clearance.

Registry conduct review.

Candidates with clear passes may be provisionally approved.

Others may receive final field review.

Victor frowned.

No combat?

Not tomorrow morning.

Marcus sighed.

Darius looked at him.

Wintermere.

Marcus straightened.

I said nothing.

Your face did.

Kael laughed.

Marcus looked betrayed.

It spreads.

Then Registrar Elric Dane arrived carrying another document.

He looked happier than usual.

That worried Kael.

What?

Elric adjusted his spectacles.

The preliminary Coliseum Championship brackets have been seeded.

Every candidate nearby turned.

Darius’s expression hardened.

Preliminary.

Elric emphasized.

Only those who ultimately qualify for tournament entry will remain.

But classification numbers are sufficient for provisional placement.

Victor moved closer.

Where?

Public bracket hall in one hour.

Darius raised one hand.

No.

Five Black Dragon candidates stared.

Victor looked wounded.

Sir—

No.

Marcus tried.

But knowing potential—

No.

Leon wisely remained silent.

Elias almost smiled.

Damien looked at Darius.

Reason?

Darius answered.

Because tomorrow determines whether you earn knighthood.

Tonight you need sleep.

Not imaginary opponents three rounds away.

Victor looked toward Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

He’s right.

Traitor.

Kael smiled.

After tomorrow.

Darius looked toward him.

If they qualify.

If they qualify.

Good.

The candidates returned to their lodging.

But Kael stayed.

He had learned enough to know the Coliseum after sunset was when politics started moving.

The nobles did not leave immediately.

Marchioness Sabine Greymark descended to speak with Helena Dorran.

Countess Aveline Serrane approached her Guardian candidate.

Viscountess Mariel Avenor stopped the swordsman from Damien’s bridge trial—the one who had rescued the old man from the burning tower.

Exactly as Kael had predicted.

Or rather, as Marquis Oren had taught him to notice.

Then Duke Renald Carthain approached Kael.

The Duke carried no entourage this time.

Only his white military coat.

Good day for Blackwood.

Kael nodded.

All five survived.

And the other three who traveled with you.

Yes.

Renald looked toward the arena.

Ravenmoor is interesting.

Kael’s expression changed slightly.

There.

Recruitment had begun before anyone even became a knight.

Kael answered carefully.

He is.

Duke Renald looked at him.

Do not glare.

I’m not.

Your face is readable.

Kael closed his eyes briefly.

This city is terrible.

The Duke laughed.

He continued.

I am not making an offer.

Yet.

Kael looked at him.

That yet was doing a lot of work.

Renald nodded.

As it should.

Then his attention moved toward the empty command battlefield.

He gave up the south gate.

Yes.

Correct decision.

Kael looked over.

You think so?

The gate’s purpose was to protect the evacuation.

Once defending the gate endangered the evacuation, the gate had become secondary.

Kael smiled faintly.

Darius said similar things.

That is why Darius won wars.

Then the Duke looked at Kael directly.

But understand something.

If Ravenmoor becomes a recognized knight, he will receive offers.

Not only because of today’s command.

His records are already moving through the noble sections.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

What records?

Public examination results.

Prior military service.

Registry sponsor.

Preliminary recommendations.

Nothing secret.

Kael relaxed slightly.

Renald continued.

A common-born or minor-born knight with leadership talent is more valuable to some Houses than a noble swordsman with a famous grandfather.

Kael nodded.

Because you can give the first one opportunity.

Exactly.

And the second believes opportunity is inheritance.

Kael liked the Duke a little more.

Still watched him carefully.

Renald continued.

If you want Ravenmoor, do not assume loyalty means he should receive less because he already likes Blackwood.

That hit.

Kael said nothing.

The Duke smiled faintly.

Good.

You understood.

He walked away.

Kael remained.

Darius appeared several moments later.

You heard?

Yes.

Is he right?

Yes.

Kael sighed.

Of course.

Darius looked toward him.

A lord who rewards strangers more generously than loyal people teaches loyalty to leave.

Kael nodded.

Blackwood did not have Duke Carthain’s land.

Cassian’s military influence.

Seraphine’s wealth.

Aurelia’s prestige.

But House Kael could not use poverty as an excuse to take people for granted.

That mattered beyond the exam.

Beyond Damien.

Kael would remember it.

The Imperial family descended later.

Not all.

Cassian came through the sponsor corridor with Seris beside him.

Kael remained near the rail.

Cassian stopped.

Your spear candidate.

Damien.

Yes.

Good judgment.

Needs better casualty planning.

Kael smiled.

Darius already told him.

Cassian looked toward Darius.

Of course he did.

Then Cassian looked at Kael.

If Ravenmoor passes, what position do you intend for him?

Kael paused.

There was the question.

Not necessarily recruitment.

Evaluation.

Maybe both.

Black Dragon.

Cassian waited.

Kael continued.

Eventually command.

How much?

Not decided.

Cassian nodded.

Good.

Kael frowned.

Good?

Do not give a man an army because an examination says leadership talent.

Kael smiled faintly.

You and Darius would get along terribly well.

Seris answered.

They do.

Darius looked away.

Cassian’s mouth moved.

Then his tone changed.

I may speak to Ravenmoor at the ball if he passes.

Kael stared.

There it was.

You want him?

Cassian shook his head.

I want to know him.

Different.

Kael remembered Darius.

Names are the beginning.

Not the end.

Cassian continued.

If a future Imperial officer emerges from Blackwood, I should know what kind of man he is.

Kael nodded slowly.

Fair.

Then Cassian added.

And if you leave him underused, someone else will notice.

Kael looked toward the corridor where Duke Carthain had disappeared.

Apparently everyone had decided to warn him today.

Maybe you should listen.

Kael looked at Seris.

Your face isn’t readable at all.

She raised one eyebrow.

Practice.

Kael disliked her again.

Seraphine passed farther down the corridor with Calista Veyne.

She did not stop.

But Calista did.

Only briefly.

Lord Kael.

Lady Calista.

Your Ravenmoor made a dangerous decision.

Kael crossed his arms.

Which one?

Ignoring the gate order.

Kael waited.

Calista looked toward Darius.

I would have failed him twenty years ago.

Darius answered.

Would you now?

She was quiet.

No.

Interesting.

Kael looked between them.

Calista continued.

A spear fighter who understands when ground stops mattering may become difficult.

Kael smiled faintly.

That sounds like praise.

It is analysis.

Of course.

She started away.

Then stopped.

Your Victor Ravenshade.

Kael braced himself.

What about him?

He followed command when every instinct wanted movement.

Yes.

Calista looked toward Darius.

That may be the more impressive change.

Darius nodded once.

Calista left.

Kael looked at him.

You are proud.

Darius sighed.

Go home.

Kael smiled.

Back at the House Kael residence, nobody was sleeping.

Of course.

Victor had found a way to obtain the provisional bracket list without physically visiting the public hall.

Kael walked into the dining room.

Everyone froze.

Victor held a parchment.

Kael stared.

Where did you get that?

Victor looked toward Mira.

Mira looked toward Brennar.

Brennar looked toward Edric.

Edric looked offended.

Do not involve me.

Hugo Stone sat in the corner eating bread.

Kael looked at him.

Hugo sighed.

A weapons inspector had a copy.

Kael pointed.

You were supposed to help them avoid this.

I am a blacksmith.

Not a priest.

Darius entered behind Kael.

The room died.

Victor slowly lowered the parchment.

Sir Darius.

Darius held out one hand.

Victor surrendered it.

Darius did not tear it.

He unfolded it.

Looked.

Everyone watched his face.

Nothing.

Victor could not help himself.

Am I matched against Marcus?

Darius looked at him.

No.

Victor relaxed.

Marcus frowned.

Why does that sound insulting?

Darius continued.

None of this matters unless tomorrow’s determination clears you.

He placed the bracket face-down on the table.

Then looked at all five Black Dragon candidates.

Today you learned something about command.

Tomorrow the Empire decides whether you have earned knighthood.

Not whether you are strongest.

Not whether you are popular.

Not whether Blackwood wants you.

Whether your conduct, skill, judgment, and service meet the Imperial standard.

He looked at Victor.

If you pass, you may look at the bracket.

Then Marcus.

If you pass, you may think about the Golden Laurel.

Then Damien.

If you pass, Houses will begin approaching you seriously.

Damien’s expression tightened.

Leon.

If you pass, Sir will follow your name for the rest of your life unless you disgrace it.

Leon nodded.

Elias.

If you pass, the oath becomes a choice.

Not an idea.

Elias looked toward Kael.

Then Darius addressed all of them.

So tonight, do not dream about winning six fights.

Decide whether you are ready to live with one title.

Silence.

Kael felt that.

The bracket could wait.

The Golden Laurel could wait.

The ball could wait.

Tomorrow was the line.

Candidate on one side.

Knight on the other.

Darius picked up the provisional bracket.

Victor watched it leave.

Painfully.

Darius stopped at the door.

Sleep.

Victor raised his hand slightly.

Sir?

Darius looked back.

If we pass—

He hesitated.

Darius waited.

Victor smiled.

Can we visit the bracket hall?

Darius stared for several seconds.

Then:

Yes.

The room erupted.

Not loudly.

But enough.

Marcus slapped the table.

Leon laughed.

Mira smiled.

Even Elias looked pleased.

Darius left before they could ruin the moment.

Kael watched him go.

Then looked at the candidates.

Tomorrow, some might earn the title.

After that, the Coliseum would become something else.

A tournament.

A bracket.

Victory or elimination.

Detailed fights before the Empire.

Champions.

Golden Laurels.

Names carved beside old legends like Darius Valen.

But before anyone could dream of being the strongest Knight of their division—

they first had to prove they deserved to become Knights at all.
