The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Marcus Wintermere arrived at the Coliseum before sunrise.

That alone told Kael how seriously he was taking the match.

Marcus had never been late to training, but he also had never been the kind of man who arrived early enough to stare at an empty arena as though the sand might reveal answers if he watched long enough. Most mornings he came carrying armor over one shoulder, ate while walking, and treated Darius’s first insult of the day as a formal greeting.

Today he stood alone near the lower practice ring.

Sword in hand.

Aura absent.

That was the important part.

Kael watched from the corridor entrance for several seconds before Marcus noticed him.

Couldn’t sleep?

Marcus glanced over.

Slept.

Badly.

Kael approached.

Nervous?

Marcus gave him a flat look.

We established this yesterday.

I wanted to see if you’d changed your answer.

No.

Good.

Marcus groaned.

You’re still doing it.

Kael smiled and leaned against the stone railing overlooking the practice ring. The Coliseum remained mostly quiet at this hour. Workers were sweeping the spectator passages, attendants were checking boundary markers, and somewhere farther below someone was arguing about whether one of the morning bells had been hung incorrectly.

No crowd yet.

No banners.

No pressure from thousands of people trying to decide what a fighter’s future meant.

Just Marcus.

Kael looked toward his sword.

No Aura.

Marcus nodded.

Darius told me not to use any before breakfast.

That sounds cruel.

He said if I can’t warm up without flooding my muscles with Aura, then I’ve learned nothing.

That also sounds like Darius.

Marcus rolled one shoulder.

I hate that man.

No, you don’t.

Marcus looked toward the far corridor.

Not today.

Footsteps answered him.

Sir Darius Valen entered carrying two wooden practice swords.

Marcus sighed.

See?

Darius ignored that and tossed one weapon toward him.

Marcus caught it.

Kael looked at the second.

For me?

No.

Good.

Darius handed it to someone behind him.

Sir Otho Keld.

Kael straightened.

Marcus did too.

The older swordsman entered wearing no tournament armor, only a plain dark training coat and boots. At thirty-three, Otho was not old, but the difference between him and Marcus showed immediately. Marcus carried power like something waiting for permission.

Otho carried stillness.

House Carthain’s knight looked toward Marcus.

Morning.

Marcus’s expression tightened.

You’re training together?

Darius answered.

No.

Then why is he here?

Because he requested the practice ring before you.

Otho shrugged.

Apparently we both dislike sleeping before important fights.

Marcus stared at him.

Otho smiled faintly.

Relax. I’m not going to ask what Darius taught you.

Darius looked between them.

You could.

Marcus frowned.

Sir?

Darius continued.

He should not answer.

Otho nodded.

Exactly.

Kael smiled.

The tournament had apparently reached the point where opponents could share a room without pretending neither existed.

Otho rested the wooden sword against one shoulder.

You use too much Aura.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

That direct?

You’ve used too much Aura in every public trial I’ve watched.

Marcus glanced toward Darius.

You invited him to insult me?

No.

He volunteered.

Otho continued.

You’re stronger than me.

Marcus said nothing.

That answer surprised him.

Otho smiled.

Physically.

Aura output.

Explosiveness.

Probably recovery too.

Then why are you confident?

Because none of those things require me to stand where you want me.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

There.

The match had started without a bell.

Darius took the wooden sword from Otho.

Enough.

Otho released it.

He looked toward Marcus.

See you on the sand.

Marcus nodded.

See you there.

Otho left.

Kael waited until his footsteps disappeared.

He’s annoying.

Marcus glanced toward him.

I like him less now.

Darius answered.

Good.

Kael covered his face.

Darius looked toward him.

What?

Nothing.

Marcus lifted the wooden sword.

So what do I do?

Darius folded his arms.

Tell me what Otho wants.

Marcus answered immediately.

To make me waste Aura.

Too broad.

Marcus frowned.

Make me attack into defense.

Better.

Then?

Counter after I overextend.

Then?

Move me.

Where?

Marcus looked toward the practice ring.

Open space.

Boundary if he can.

Darius nodded.

And what do you want?

To break his defense.

Wrong.

Marcus looked up.

Darius continued.

That is what you usually want.

What do you need?

Marcus thought longer.

Make him commit.

Yes.

How?

Marcus did not answer.

Darius nodded toward the wooden sword.

Find out.

For the next forty minutes Marcus trained without using Aura.

That was not impressive to watch.

Which made it useful.

Darius forced him to stop after every exchange and explain why he had moved. When Marcus could not answer, Darius made him repeat the movement more slowly. When Marcus rushed the imaginary opponent, Darius tapped his forehead with the practice sword. When Marcus became frustrated, Kael counted the taps.

Seven.

Marcus noticed.

Stop.

Eight.

Kael smiled.

By the time the first spectator bells sounded across the Coliseum, Marcus was sweating harder than he had during several Aura drills.

Darius finally stepped back.

Enough.

Marcus lowered the sword.

That’s it?

No.

That’s all you get before the match.

Marcus breathed slowly.

Then Darius looked directly at him.

Power is not your mistake.

Marcus straightened.

Wasting it is.

Silence settled between them.

Darius continued.

Do not enter the arena trying to prove you’ve changed.

Marcus looked toward him.

Then what am I proving?

Nothing.

Fight Otho.

Not yourself.

Marcus nodded.

That was the answer.

The crowd arrived quickly after that.

By the time Kael returned from breakfast with Lily, Edwin, Leon, Victor, Elias, Damien, Hugo, and several others from Blackwood, the morning seats were nearly full.

Marcus’s match was not the first of the day.

It was simply the first one Blackwood cared about.

That distinction mattered.

Kael watched two preliminary bouts before Marcus’s name appeared on the board. One ended by submission. The other ended when a young noble fighter suffered his third boundary exit after refusing to adjust to a shorter opponent’s footwork.

Victor spent both matches offering commentary nobody requested.

Elias sat with his injured ankle supported on a low stool.

Kael looked toward him.

How bad?

Healer says two days before I can walk normally.

Victor leaned over.

So you’re basically retired.

Elias looked at him.

I can still reach you with a chair.

Victor sat back.

Recovery looks promising.

Damien laughed quietly.

Then Grand Herald Ken’s voice rolled across the arena.

Swordsman and Knight Division.

Round of Sixty-Four.

Sir Marcus Wintermere of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Blackwood stood.

Marcus entered from the western gate.

No dramatic Aura.

No blast of pressure.

That alone caused whispers.

People had seen Marcus during earlier trials.

They expected force.

He gave them calm.

Kael liked it.

Marcus wore dark Black Dragon armor reinforced across the shoulders and chest, his longsword resting at his side. His Imperial knight insignia caught the morning light as he walked toward the center.

Then the opposite gate opened.

Sir Otho Keld of House Carthain.

Otho entered beneath crimson and gray.

House Carthain’s section greeted him with disciplined applause rather than noise. Duke Renald Carthain sat near the front with several household officers. Sir Roderic Seln, who had eliminated Brennar Holt the previous night, watched from the candidate section.

Otho carried a heavier longsword than Marcus.

Not larger by much.

But enough to change leverage.

Victor leaned toward Kael.

He’s going to turtle.

Elias answered.

Not exactly.

Victor looked over.

You lost yesterday.

Elias’s expression remained calm.

I can still identify defense.

Kael laughed.

The judge reviewed rules.

Both fighters acknowledged.

They moved apart.

Marcus raised his sword into middle guard.

Otho held his slightly lower.

The bell rang.

Marcus did not attack.

That produced an immediate reaction from the Black Dragon section.

Victor blinked.

Who is that?

Kael smiled.

Marcus.

No.

I’ve met Marcus.

Across the arena, Otho looked mildly surprised too.

He stepped forward.

Marcus stayed.

Another step.

Still nothing.

Otho’s sword moved first.

Short thrust toward chest.

Marcus redirected.

No Aura.

Otho rotated into a cut toward Marcus’s lead arm.

Marcus stepped away.

Good.

Reset.

No contact.

Otho circled.

Marcus followed carefully.

Then Otho attacked again.

High.

Low.

Shoulder.

Three movements.

Marcus defended all three.

Kael looked toward Elias.

Familiar?

Elias smiled faintly.

Everyone has patterns.

The difference is whether they matter.

Otho reset.

Marcus did not chase.

That mattered.

Darius remained below with the combat observers.

No expression.

Second exchange.

Otho used more pressure.

A heavy diagonal cut.

Marcus blocked.

The impact moved Marcus’s blade several inches.

Otho immediately stepped inside.

Marcus almost used Aura.

Kael saw it.

The faintest shimmer under the skin of his forearm.

Then it disappeared.

Marcus chose footwork instead.

He pivoted.

Otho’s shoulder passed.

Marcus cut toward back armor.

Otho twisted.

Barely avoided.

The crowd reacted.

No score.

But close.

Otho looked at Marcus differently now.

He had expected Marcus to meet strength with strength.

Marcus had moved.

Good.

They reset.

One minute.

No score.

Then Otho smiled.

You’ve been training.

Marcus answered.

Unfortunately.

The crowd laughed.

Darius did not.

Otho advanced.

This time he feinted high.

Marcus ignored.

Low cut.

Marcus blocked.

Then Otho stepped away.

Marcus did not follow.

Again.

Otho feinted.

Marcus stayed.

Third time.

Otho attacked for real.

Marcus parried.

Then Otho retreated deliberately.

A test.

Marcus watched him.

Did not chase.

Victor whispered.

He’s fighting like Elias.

Elias shook his head.

No.

He’s refusing to fight like Marcus.

That was better.

Otho’s expression became more serious.

He had a plan.

Marcus was making him work for it.

Then Marcus attacked.

One step.

Straight cut.

Otho blocked easily.

Marcus withdrew.

Otho frowned.

Second attack.

Thrust.

Blocked.

Withdraw.

Third.

Marcus moved forward as if to strike, then stopped completely.

Otho’s guard shifted.

Tiny.

Marcus smiled.

He had made Otho answer something.

Then he attacked low.

Otho blocked.

Marcus used the contact to step left.

Not through.

Around.

Otho turned.

Marcus struck toward shoulder.

Otho parried late.

Blade scraped armor.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

Blackwood exploded.

Victor stood.

YES.

Elias grabbed his coat and pulled him back down.

Sit.

Marcus stepped away immediately.

No celebration.

Otho looked toward the mark on his shoulder.

Then toward Marcus.

Good.

Kael groaned.

Not him too.

Lily looked over.

What?

Nothing.

Two minutes.

Marcus led one to zero.

Otho adjusted.

The next exchange changed immediately.

He stopped trying to draw Marcus forward.

Instead he began taking space.

Slowly.

One step at a time.

Marcus gave some.

Not all.

Otho attacked at the edge of range.

Marcus blocked.

Otho did not continue.

Advanced.

Again.

Marcus shifted.

Again.

He was being moved.

Not through force.

Through position.

Kael leaned forward.

There.

Otho was taking away Marcus’s freedom without giving him something obvious to strike.

Marcus realized.

He planted his feet.

Otho attacked high.

Marcus blocked.

Second strike heavier.

Marcus blocked again.

Third.

Aura.

Otho used it first.

Moderate.

Concentrated through shoulders and blade.

Impact rang across the Coliseum.

Marcus’s sword dropped.

Otho thrust.

Marcus twisted.

Blade scraped ribs.

Scoring bell.

One to one.

House Carthain applauded.

Marcus stepped away.

He had been waiting for Aura.

Now he knew the level.

Otho pressed.

Marcus raised his own Aura.

The crowd felt it immediately.

Not explosive.

Controlled.

A thin reinforcement through arms and legs.

Victor whispered.

That’s weird.

Kael looked over.

What?

It’s Marcus.

Quiet.

Elias nodded.

That’s the point.

Otho attacked.

Marcus blocked.

This time the swords met with a harder crack.

Neither moved much.

Otho’s eyebrows rose.

Marcus could overpower him.

Everyone knew.

Marcus knew.

He did not.

Instead he turned the blade and redirected.

Otho’s sword slid wide.

Marcus stepped forward.

One thrust.

Otho parried.

Marcus stopped.

No follow-up.

Otho waited for the explosion.

It never came.

That hesitation created space.

Marcus took it.

Center.

Kael smiled.

He’s making Otho wait for the bad version of him.

Darius finally looked toward Kael.

Yes.

Victor leaned forward.

That is evil.

Elias answered.

Useful.

Kael laughed.

Otho circled.

Marcus held center.

Three minutes.

One to one.

Then Otho changed.

He attacked Marcus’s Aura instead of Marcus.

Heavy strike.

Marcus reinforced.

Blocked.

Second.

Marcus reinforced again.

Third.

Again.

Otho retreated.

Marcus’s brow tightened.

Kael saw it.

Otho had made him spend Aura three times without trying to score.

Darius had warned him.

Waste.

Otho attacked again.

Marcus reinforced harder.

Impact.

Reset.

Again.

Marcus blocked.

Aura.

Victor frowned.

He’s doing it.

Kael nodded.

Otho’s plan.

Not dramatic.

Just expensive.

Marcus’s reserves were larger than Otho’s.

But if Marcus answered every strike with more power, that advantage could become waste.

Next exchange.

Otho attacked.

Marcus began reinforcement—

then stopped.

Used normal blade structure.

The impact drove him half a step backward.

But he absorbed.

Otho followed immediately.

Second strike.

Marcus blocked.

Third.

Marcus moved instead.

No Aura.

Otho overextended slightly.

Marcus saw.

Counter.

Sword toward side.

Otho turned.

Contact.

Second score for Marcus.

Two to one.

The crowd reacted.

Otho retreated.

Marcus breathed.

Not heavily yet.

Good.

He had spent less to earn more.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Better?

Darius answered.

Learning.

Of course.

Four minutes.

Marcus led two-one.

Then Otho showed why he was thirty-three and still dangerous.

He stopped attacking the sword.

He attacked Marcus’s decisions.

Feint.

Marcus did not reinforce.

Real strike.

Marcus blocked late.

Contact on forearm armor.

Two to two.

Next exchange.

Real-looking cut.

Marcus reinforced.

Otho stopped.

No impact.

Aura wasted.

Then immediate thrust.

Marcus barely redirected.

No score.

Otho smiled.

Marcus frowned.

The arena became quiet.

This was not a fight about who hit harder.

It was a fight about who could make the other spend the wrong thing.

Movement.

Aura.

Attention.

Time.

Otho feinted again.

Marcus waited.

Real?

No.

Again.

Marcus held.

Then Otho rushed suddenly.

Marcus had waited too long.

Heavy shoulder contact.

Otho drove him backward.

Marcus planted.

Aura surged.

Too much.

Kael felt it.

Victor whispered.

There he is.

Marcus shoved.

Otho flew backward two steps.

The crowd roared.

Impressive.

Bad.

Otho smiled.

Exactly.

Marcus had spent enough Aura for three exchanges to win one position.

He realized immediately.

His face tightened.

Otho pointed his sword.

That’s what I wanted.

Marcus answered.

I know.

Then stop giving it to me.

Marcus smiled.

Good advice.

Kael stared.

They’re helping each other now?

Elias answered.

No.

They’re bragging.

Fair.

Five minutes.

Two-two.

Marcus lowered his Aura again.

Otho attacked.

Marcus moved.

Better.

Another.

Move.

Third.

Marcus blocked with structure.

No reinforcement.

The exchanges became slower.

Less spectacular.

Several spectators grew restless.

Kael did not.

He could see Marcus thinking.

That was the fight.

Then Marcus did something Otho did not expect.

He gave ground voluntarily.

One step.

Otho followed.

Another.

Otho followed again.

Victor frowned.

Boundary?

Not yet.

Marcus kept retreating.

Otho’s eyes narrowed.

He understood.

Marcus was inviting him to believe the old problem had returned.

Otho stopped.

Marcus stopped too.

Distance.

Silence.

Then Marcus took one step forward.

Otho shifted back.

Marcus smiled.

Now who was reacting?

He advanced again.

Otho moved sideways.

Marcus did not attack.

Another step.

Otho adjusted.

Marcus was controlling space without swinging.

Kael looked toward Leon.

That’s new.

Leon nodded.

Very.

Otho realized and attacked.

Marcus had wanted it.

He parried.

Stepped outside.

Thrust.

Otho blocked.

Marcus continued second.

Third.

Then stopped.

Otho expected more.

His guard stayed high.

Marcus kicked low at the outer thigh.

Not a scoring strike.

Enough to break stance.

Otho stumbled.

Marcus cut toward chest.

Scoring bell.

Three to two.

Blackwood roared again.

Marcus withdrew.

No overcommitment.

Otho’s expression became serious.

Very serious.

Six minutes.

Halfway.

Marcus led.

Then Otho increased Aura.

Not huge.

Efficient.

His movement sharpened.

First exchange.

Marcus blocked.

Otho’s blade slid.

Second came from opposite side.

Marcus parried.

Third thrust.

Marcus stepped away.

Otho continued fourth.

Unexpected.

Marcus blocked late.

Fifth.

Marcus reinforced.

Hard.

Otho immediately disengaged.

Waste again.

Marcus cursed softly.

Otho heard.

Good.

Kael sighed.

Apparently this word had infected the entire tournament.

Otho attacked again.

Marcus refused reinforcement.

Otho increased power mid-strike.

Impact broke Marcus’s guard open.

Blade touched chest.

Three to three.

Excellent adjustment.

Marcus nodded once.

He understood.

Otho could now vary Aura inside exchanges.

Harder to read.

Seven minutes.

Tie.

Otho began controlling tempo.

Fast.

Slow.

Fast.

Nothing.

Marcus’s large reserves helped less when he could not predict when to use them.

He took another contact on upper arm.

Four-three Otho.

Then another near the hip.

Five-three.

Blackwood quieted.

Victor looked toward Darius.

Do something.

Darius did not look at him.

Such as?

Victor opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Exactly.

Marcus had to solve it.

Kael watched him.

His breathing had changed.

Not exhaustion.

Frustration.

Dangerous.

Otho saw that too.

He attacked.

Marcus blocked.

Otho disengaged.

Another.

Marcus parried.

Otho stepped away.

Marcus followed.

Too fast.

There.

Otho pivoted.

Heavy strike toward ribs.

Marcus barely blocked.

Aura surged.

Too much again.

Otho let the blades connect, then immediately released pressure.

Marcus had braced for force that disappeared.

His body moved forward.

Otho stepped aside.

Pommel strike to shoulder.

Not scoring.

Then blade across back.

Scoring bell.

Six-three.

House Carthain erupted.

Marcus turned.

Angry.

Kael stood slightly.

Darius’s voice carried from below.

Wintermere.

Not loud.

Marcus heard.

That was all.

He breathed.

One breath.

Two.

His Aura dropped.

The crowd noticed.

Otho did too.

Marcus reset.

Eight minutes.

Four left.

Down three contacts.

No boundary exits.

No serious injury.

Still plenty of fight.

Otho smiled.

Better.

Marcus looked at him.

Stop saying that.

The crowd laughed.

Good.

Even Marcus smiled.

Tension broke.

That helped.

Otho advanced.

Marcus did not wait.

He attacked first.

But not with force.

Straight thrust.

Otho parried.

Marcus cut low.

Blocked.

Third high.

Otho expected surge.

Marcus gave none.

Fourth.

Still none.

Fifth.

Otho’s defense remained clean.

Marcus continued.

Sixth.

Now Otho was being forced to defend repeatedly.

Not because the strikes were powerful.

Because they kept coming.

Otho tried disengaging.

Marcus followed.

Seventh.

Eighth.

Otho’s guard shifted slightly slower.

Marcus had made him spend movement instead of Aura.

Then Marcus stopped.

Otho prepared for ninth.

Nothing.

His weight stayed backward.

Marcus stepped in and shoulder-checked.

Otho stumbled.

Marcus thrust.

Contact chest.

Six-four.

Blackwood roared.

Marcus continued.

No reset?

Dangerous.

Otho parried second.

Marcus attacked third.

Otho countered.

Marcus moved.

Fourth.

Otho blocked.

Marcus finally used Aura.

Small.

Precise.

Only through wrist and blade.

The strike snapped Otho’s sword outward.

Opening.

Marcus thrust.

Scoring bell.

Six-five.

The Coliseum erupted.

Victor nearly climbed the railing.

THERE!

Darius did not stop him.

Probably because he agreed.

Otho backed away.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not exhausted.

But breathing harder.

Marcus had forced him to work.

Nine minutes.

Six-five.

Then both slowed.

Good fighters knew when an exchange had shifted something.

Otho circled.

Marcus held center.

No chase.

The crowd murmured.

Otho feinted.

Marcus ignored.

Again.

Ignored.

Third.

Real strike.

Marcus parried.

Otho continued.

Marcus redirected.

No Aura.

Otho attacked low.

Marcus moved.

Then Marcus stepped forward suddenly.

Otho backed.

One step.

Two.

Marcus did not attack.

Boundary approaching behind Otho.

Now position mattered.

Otho glanced.

Tiny.

Marcus saw.

He attacked.

Otho blocked.

Marcus reinforced.

Moderate.

Otho pushed back.

Marcus did not fight the push.

He released.

Otho’s force carried forward.

Marcus turned.

Same principle Darius had drilled.

Do not contest force you can redirect.

Otho crossed past him.

Marcus shoved shoulder.

Boundary horn.

First exit against Otho.

The Coliseum erupted.

Score still six-five.

But position changed.

Otho returned.

His expression remained calm.

Good—

Marcus pointed his sword.

Don’t.

Otho laughed.

Even Duke Carthain smiled.

Ten minutes.

Two remaining.

Otho still led by one contact.

Marcus had momentum.

Otho knew.

He changed again.

Defensive.

No more testing.

No more unnecessary attacks.

He held distance.

Marcus recognized immediately.

Clock.

He had become Elias.

Not exactly.

But close.

Otho had the lead.

Marcus needed action.

Kael felt the pressure.

Victor whispered.

Go.

Elias answered.

Not yet.

Victor glared.

You say that too much.

Elias looked toward the clock.

Marcus has two minutes.

He can afford ten seconds of thought.

Not thirty.

Marcus moved.

One step.

Otho circled.

Marcus followed.

No attack.

Another.

Otho moved.

Marcus feinted.

Ignored.

Again.

Ignored.

Then Marcus rushed.

Otho expected it.

Blade ready.

Marcus stopped outside range.

Otho’s counter came anyway.

Too early.

Marcus smiled.

He had created the reaction.

He stepped in.

Otho recovered.

Marcus attacked low.

Blocked.

High.

Blocked.

Third.

Otho parried.

Marcus used no Aura.

Fourth.

Still none.

Otho waited for the surge.

Fifth.

Nothing.

Then Marcus stepped close.

Too close for full sword power.

He grabbed Otho’s forearm.

Otho immediately twisted.

Marcus released.

Fake grapple.

Otho’s guard shifted inward.

Marcus kicked the outside of his knee.

Otho stumbled.

Marcus turned the blade.

Aura flashed only at the final instant.

Controlled.

Precise.

Strike to shoulder.

Scoring bell.

Six-six.

The arena exploded.

One minute ten.

Tie.

Otho backed away.

Now the clock meant nothing simple.

If tied at time, judges would decide through control, initiative, ring position, clean technique, and effectiveness.

Marcus had one boundary advantage.

Otho had controlled the middle portion.

Close.

Very close.

Otho knew.

He could not simply wait.

Good.

Marcus had made the fight answer him.

Darius’s lesson.

They met center.

No words.

Thirty seconds later both attacked simultaneously.

Steel crashed.

Aura flared.

Not uncontrolled.

Marcus’s stronger.

Otho’s cleaner.

Blade pressure locked.

Marcus could overpower.

He started to.

Otho angled away.

Expected.

Marcus did not follow the force.

He disengaged first.

Otho stumbled half-step.

Marcus thrust.

Otho barely parried.

Counter toward Marcus’s ribs.

Marcus turned.

No score.

Twenty-five seconds.

Crowd counting.

Otho attacked.

Marcus blocked.

Second.

Marcus shifted.

Third.

Otho feinted.

Marcus waited.

Correct.

Then Otho suddenly stepped inside and drove his shoulder into Marcus’s chest.

Marcus moved backward.

Boundary far.

No issue.

Otho slashed.

Marcus parried.

Fifteen.

Otho attacked again.

Marcus blocked.

Ten.

Marcus could accept decision.

Maybe.

But he didn’t know judges.

He needed something.

Otho knew too.

They attacked.

Marcus high.

Otho low.

Both changed mid-motion.

Steel rang.

Five.

Marcus’s blade locked against Otho’s.

Otho pushed.

Marcus reinforced.

Too much?

No.

Just enough.

Then Marcus released with his left hand.

Otho expected two-handed pressure.

His blade shifted.

Marcus caught Otho’s sword wrist.

Three.

Otho twisted.

Marcus stepped outside.

Two.

He could not finish control.

One.

Marcus used his hip.

Turned.

Otho stumbled.

Final bell.

Both froze.

Marcus still held Otho’s wrist.

Otho still held his sword.

No decisive control.

No score.

Silence.

Then the Coliseum erupted.

Not because anyone knew the result.

Because the fight deserved noise.

Marcus released Otho immediately.

They stepped apart.

Both breathing hard.

Otho smiled.

You used less Aura than I expected.

Marcus answered.

You used more words.

Fair.

They looked toward the judges.

Score tied six-six.

Boundary exits one against Otho.

No exits against Marcus.

But Otho had led for longer.

Controlled the middle.

Marcus controlled the final third.

Clean contacts equal.

Aura efficiency?

Marcus had improved.

Still wasted more overall.

Judge discussion lasted longer than Elias and Edric’s.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Victor paced.

Leon told him to stop.

Victor did not.

Elias watched the judges instead.

Darius remained unreadable.

Finally Grand Herald Ken received the slate.

The crowd settled.

Winner by decision—

Marcus breathed once.

Sir Marcus Wintermere of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Blackwood exploded.

Victor grabbed Leon.

Leon shoved him away.

Hugo roared loud enough to frighten the row in front.

Lily stood.

Edwin actually clapped above shoulder height, which for Edwin qualified as uncontrolled celebration.

Kael laughed.

Marcus did not celebrate immediately.

He looked toward Otho.

The older knight nodded.

Fair.

Marcus extended his forearm.

Otho accepted.

You made me waste too much.

Otho smiled.

Less than yesterday.

Marcus shook his head.

I hate all of you.

That finally made Otho laugh.

Then Marcus turned toward Blackwood.

The applause hit him.

He raised one hand.

Not sword.

Just hand.

Enough.

Kael watched Darius.

No smile.

But the man’s shoulders had relaxed.

That counted.

In the exit corridor, Marcus found Darius waiting.

Of course.

Kael followed with Victor, Leon, Elias, Damien, and the others.

Marcus stopped.

Sir.

Darius looked at him.

Why did you win?

Marcus blinked.

Victor whispered.

He changed the question.

Darius ignored him.

Marcus thought.

I made Otho commit late.

Partly.

I stopped reinforcing every block.

Yes.

Used movement instead.

Yes.

Made him defend longer sequences without trying to overpower him.

Yes.

Used Aura later in the motion so he couldn’t always bait it.

Darius nodded.

And?

Marcus frowned.

Boundary control.

Yes.

And?

Marcus looked toward the floor.

I stopped trying to prove I had better Aura.

There.

Silence.

Darius continued.

You are stronger than Otho.

Yes, Sir.

That mattered.

Marcus nodded.

It was not enough.

No.

Darius stepped closer.

Do not become one of those fools who learns restraint and then becomes ashamed of power.

Marcus looked up.

Sir?

Your Aura is an advantage.

Use it.

The lesson was never less strength.

It was less waste.

Marcus slowly nodded.

Darius continued.

Today you spent too much in the middle.

You reacted emotionally when he made you miss.

You still reinforced several attacks that were never meant to land.

Marcus nodded.

But you adjusted before the match was gone.

Yes.

You made him defend.

You made the clock matter to him.

You used strength when it created consequence instead of spectacle.

Marcus’s expression shifted.

Darius finally nodded.

Good fight.

There it was.

Marcus smiled.

Thank you, Sir.

Victor leaned toward Kael.

He got good fight.

Elias got good fight yesterday.

Kael looked over.

Are you keeping score?

Obviously.

Darius’s eyes moved toward Victor.

Victor immediately faced forward.

Marcus looked around.

Then laughed.

I won.

Kael smiled.

You sound surprised.

I am.

Good.

Marcus pointed.

Don’t ruin this.

Kael laughed.

The bracket board updated several minutes later.

Sir Marcus Wintermere — ADVANCES

His next opponent had not yet been decided.

That would come from the afternoon side of the bracket.

Marcus stared at the empty line beneath his name.

Yesterday, the unknown would have bothered him differently.

He would have wanted to know whether the next opponent was stronger.

How much Aura they had.

Whether he could overpower them.

Now Kael saw another question behind his eyes.

How do they fight?

Better question.

The morning continued.

Kael stayed for several matches.

Not every one belonged to Blackwood, but the tournament was becoming useful beyond loyalty.

He watched fighters with less Aura defeat stronger opponents through timing.

He watched a technically brilliant knight lose because he refused to change when an old injury became obvious.

He watched one young noble win in under two minutes, then receive louder criticism from his own instructor than the man he defeated.

Aurelia’s tournament had begun as spectacle.

It was becoming education.

By midday, Marcus’s victory had already traveled beyond the Coliseum.

Kael discovered that when a House Carthain retainer approached them near the meal corridor.

Sir Marcus Wintermere?

Marcus looked over.

Yes.

The retainer bowed.

Duke Renald Carthain requests that you join a small technical dinner after tomorrow’s matches.

Marcus stared.

Why?

The man smiled.

Sir Otho recommended you.

Marcus looked toward Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

Your choice.

Marcus sighed.

Everyone keeps saying that.

Kael smiled.

Good.

Marcus stared at him.

I may hit you.

The retainer politely pretended not to hear.

Marcus accepted the invitation.

Not service.

Not loyalty.

Conversation.

Another door.

That was what the tournament was doing.

People came for victory.

They left with attention.

Sometimes after winning.

Sometimes, as Elias had discovered, after losing well.

Kael looked toward the Black Dragons gathered around the corridor.

Elias on one injured ankle.

Marcus exhausted but victorious.

Victor still bandaged.

Leon studying Cassel Roen’s bracket line.

Damien already thinking about Dame Aris Valenne.

Mira somewhere else in the Coliseum probably making another opponent regret trying to predict her.

The Black Dragons were changing.

Not into legends.

Not yet.

Into people who had begun learning what their own weaknesses cost when the opponent was allowed to punish them.

That mattered more.

Darius approached Kael while the others talked.

One problem.

Kael looked over.

Only one?

For now.

That’s generous.

Darius ignored him.

The nobles are watching them differently.

Kael glanced toward Marcus accepting congratulations from a minor military officer.

I noticed.

Darius continued.

The ball will make it worse.

Offers?

Offers.

Flattery.

Promises.

House positions.

Marriage inquiries.

Patronage.

Private training.

Land.

Kael’s expression changed.

Marriage?

Darius looked almost amused.

You thought Imperial Knights became attractive only because of swordsmanship?

Kael looked toward Victor.

Victor was currently arguing with Hugo about whether breakfast counted as pre-training nutrition if eaten twice.

Someone might want that?

Darius smiled faintly.

Some families value land more than personality.

Kael laughed.

Then Darius’s expression became serious again.

Do not interfere too much.

Kael nodded.

I know.

Do you?

Darius looked toward Elias.

You handled him correctly last night.

His oath is his decision.

Marcus’s too.

Leon’s.

Damien’s.

All of them.

Kael looked toward the Black Dragon insignia on Marcus’s armor.

They’re Black Dragons.

Yes.

That does not mean they stop having futures beyond your immediate preference.

Kael became quiet.

Darius continued.

If House Kael can only keep capable people by preventing everyone else from speaking to them, then House Kael deserves to lose them.

That sounded harsh.

Which meant Kael believed it.

He nodded.

Then let them choose.

Yes.

And if they leave?

Darius looked toward him.

Then make Blackwood worth returning to.

Kael smiled faintly.

That’s annoyingly reasonable.

I practice.

The afternoon bells sounded.

Somewhere inside the Coliseum, another pair of fighters entered the sand.

Kael looked toward the bracket.

Marcus had advanced.

One line.

One victory.

Nothing guaranteed beyond it.

The tournament was narrowing again.

But the more the bracket narrowed, the larger everything around it became.

House interest.

Ball invitations.

Military attention.

Future oaths.

Old loyalties.

New ambitions.

The Golden Laurel still waited at the end.

Kael was beginning to suspect the Laurel might be the least important thing anyone carried away from Aurelia.
