Urban Martial Saint

As soon as Lin Huayu said this, the class fell silent for a moment, then a group of students burst into laughter.

”Miss Lin, how did you come up with such a precise number?” a female student asked with a laugh.

”Haven’t you realized the pattern of college mathematics after these few days? Although the problems are difficult, the answers are typically simple. They’re never that complicated.”

”Yeah, and there’s even a decimal point, you’re way too skilled.”

”How on earth did you get that number?”

The laughter continued, but nobody noticed that the Old Scholar sitting at the front had frozen.

”Teacher, I think the answer to this question should be two,” the top student said. He had been working on the problem, and now he had a rough answer.

The Old Scholar came back to his senses, scratched his head, and said, ”Two as an answer would earn you half the marks.”

The top student immediately wore a smug look. For such a question, it was nearly impossible to solve it without spending at least ten minutes. It was quite an achievement for him to earn half the marks in just a few minutes.

”Teacher, what does half the marks mean?” a girl asked curiously.

”The real answer to this question should be 1.7,” the Old Scholar glanced at Lin Huayu and said, ”During exams, such questions usually have bonus points. Getting the answer as two would earn half the marks. An answer of 1.7 would get full marks.”

At this point, the Old Scholar paused and added, ”However, an answer of 1.73 would earn you bonus points, typically ten.”

Everyone was astonished. 1.73 was so close to the answer Lin Huayu had given. Their views on Lin Huayu shifted from mockery to awe and amazement. How had she calculated the result so accurately?

The Old Scholar hadn’t finished speaking. He looked at Lin Huayu and said, ”In fact, the actual answer to this problem is 1.735. But someone who can calculate this result is either a mathematical genius or a graduate student in mathematics. This last digit is the hardest to figure out!”

Upon hearing this, the entire class was shocked!

The Old Scholar was a mild-mannered man, but when it came to scholarship, he was absolutely meticulous. His words were clear-cut; what he stated as the answer was definite.

Now that he mentioned the answer of 1.735 could only be worked out by a math genius or a graduate student in mathematics, there was no doubt about its veracity. But how had Lin Huayu, who usually showed no interest in study, come up with it?

Everyone was stunned. The girls who had just mocked and ridiculed Lin Huayu now clamped their mouths shut, their faces burning as if they had been slapped in public, wishing they could disappear into a crack in the ground.

Who could have imagined that Lin Huayu would be able to come up with the answer and be held in such high esteem by the Old Scholar? Even the top student was stunned. He had always taken pride in his grades but now he couldn’t even lift his head in Lin Huayu’s presence.

Lin Huayu herself was even more embarrassed. She had merely read out the number given to her by Ye Qing; in fact, she had no idea what it meant. Bearing the astonished gazes of everyone, she truly felt at a loss.

”Lin Huayu, it seems you have quite a talent in mathematics!” The Old Scholar adjusted his glasses with excitement and said, ”Very good, quite impressive. In over twenty years, this is the first time I’ve seen a student calculate the answer with such precision. Really great!”

Lin Huayu blushed, her head bowed, stealing glances at the silent Ye Qing next to her. This number was given to her by Ye, but how had Ye come up with it?

Of course, Lin Huayu didn’t believe Ye could calculate this problem in such a short period since, in her mind, Ye was just a retired soldier and unlikely to solve such problems. Her only guess was that Ye must have seen this problem somewhere else, perhaps in a book.

For the remaining half of the class, everyone spent the time in amazement, still puzzled how the usually study-averse Lin Huayu had suddenly become a math genius—it was simply irrational.

The class finally dragged to an end, and after the Old Scholar had specially praised Lin Huayu a few more times, he left, making her feel even more embarrassed.

After the Old Scholar left, many people turned their astonished gazes towards Lin Huayu. Unable to withstand the attention, she dragged Ye away from the classroom as if fleeing.

Only when they reached a secluded corner did Lin Huayu lower her voice and ask, ”Ye, how did you know that number just now?”

”I calculated it,” Ye Qing answered truthfully.

Lin Huayu obviously didn’t believe Ye’s words, and spoke with a pout, ”Calculate my foot, did you see it in a book before?”

Ye Qing: ”No.”

”No way!” Lin Huayu turned around and said, ”Come on, let’s go to the mall!”

Ye Qing shook his head, ”I have one more class this afternoon, let’s go after that.”

Lin Huayu turned to look at Ye Qing, pouted, and complained, ”I don’t want to go to class!”

”We’ll go after the class,” Ye Qing said calmly, but his tone was firm.

Unable to get her way with Ye Qing, Lin Huayu pouted and said, ”Then I’m hungry, let’s eat first!”

Although Lin Huayu said she wanted to eat, instead of going straight to the school cafeteria, she took Ye Qing on a long detour, visiting several places before leisurely heading to the cafeteria.

By that time, there weren’t many people in the cafeteria. Lin Huayu led Ye Qing to order some food, carried their trays to a clean spot, and started to eat slowly.

Ye Qing ate quickly, which was his habit from the army. Lin Huayu, on the other hand, ate slowly, like embroidery, and not much at that, mostly just watching Ye Qing eat.

Seeing that Ye Qing finished in less than two minutes, Lin Huayu couldn’t help but said, ”Wow, you eat so fiercely!”

After thinking for a moment, Ye Qing said, ”That night, your eating was quite fierce too!”

”Which night?” Lin Huayu was startled, but quickly remembered the night she was saved by Ye Qing. She had been extremely hungry and had polished off Ye Qing’s leftover meal to the last grain, almost licking the bowl clean. Now, recalling it, her cheeks flushed red, and she bowed her head to eat, ignoring Ye Qing.

Ye Qing sat across from Lin Huayu. Though he didn’t look around, he was aware of everything happening in the cafeteria. It’s a skill requisite of a Special Forces soldier, to have eyes in every direction, ears catching every sound, always maintaining battle readiness. Especially now, as a bodyguard, he had to be vigilant against any potential danger.

There weren’t many people in the cafeteria, most students had left after eating, leaving their uneaten food on the tables. A cleaning lady, dragging a bucket for leftovers, was going from table to table, clearing them up, muttering about the students’ waste of food.

On the other side, a young man in earth-gray clothing, his coat patched up at two places, with messy hair, was moving stealthily among the tables. Because of his odd behavior, Ye Qing paid extra attention, watching the man’s actions closely.

This young man meandered between several tables, scanning around. When no one was looking, he suddenly grabbed a plate and wolfed down the leftover food. Perhaps eating too hastily, he choked, his eyes rolling back as he pounded his back to swallow down the food.

However, the leftovers on that plate weren’t enough for him. He moved between a few more tables until he was full. After eating, he didn’t leave; instead, he quietly took out a plastic bag and started filling it with the food from the plates. Once the bag was stuffed, he left satisfied.

His movements were still sneaky, his bent figure barely lifting his feet shod in worn-out sneakers that had been patched numerous times. His clothes, washed pale and patched, seemed out of place in the modernized university campus. He shrunk his body, walked with his head down, too self-conscious to make eye contact with anyone.

Ye Qing sighed softly, too many poor people still exist in society. When he was in university, he had experienced such things. Without money for food, he had eaten leftover meals in the cafeteria, so he understood the young man’s feelings better than anyone. Life, after all, is not easy.

Lin Huayu took a few bites, pushed her tray aside, and noticing Ye Qing gazing out the door, asked curiously, ”Ye, what are you looking at?”

”Nothing.” Ye Qing turned back, seeing Lin Huayu’s plate with barely touched food, frowned, and said, ”Why did you leave so much?”

”I’m full!” Lin Huayu stood up, pulling on Ye Qing’s arm, and said, ”Let’s go, let’s go to class fast, and after the class we’ll go shopping, you promised!”

Ye Qing stood up and looking at the uneaten food on the plate, sighed lightly, and said, ”Next time, if you can’t finish, don’t order so much. It’s not good to waste.”

Lin Huayu shrugged and said, ”The school’s food is too disgusting, but if I don’t eat, I get hungry; I just can’t help it.”

Ye Qing felt helpless: this missy, who had grown up with a silver spoon, of course, could not understand what this wasted food might mean to a poor student.

The afternoon class was a public lecture attended by students from four departments. Such classes were generally chaotic. Lin Huayu, pulling Ye Qing into the classroom, immediately drew many curious glances. Within these departments, Lin Huayu was viewed as a Goddess.

Her own department’s students were one thing, still in awe from her solving that problem in the morning. However, the students from other departments were shocked and angry by various expressions, upon seeing Lin Huayu walking in with an unfamiliar man.

Lin Huayu ignored these people and led Ye Qing straight to the back row. She wasn’t really there to learn, but just to make an appearance.

Almost everyone in the classroom watched as the two made their way to the back, and the whispers immediately started. Much like the morning’s discussions in Lin Huayu’s department, most were speculating about Ye Qing’s background and his relationship with Lin Huayu.

”Bang,” suddenly, the classroom door was kicked open, and a few gaudily dressed young men swaggered in.

(Today’s ten chapters are complete, I hope everyone enjoys reading. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students who just finished their entrance exams good luck with their results, and have a fun summer vacation.)
