The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 861: Chapter 861: The Reason Meng Yunzheng Pretended to be Mute

Madam Gong was by no means a good person; for many years, she had endured her husband bringing his illegitimate child home without saying a word.

After all, it was her own lack of ability, as she hadn’t been able to bear a son or a daughter for her husband.

But she also raised the son of her husband’s concubine by her side, treating him like her own biological child. In her eyes, Meng Yunzheng absolutely should not surpass her adopted son. How could an illegitimate child with a lowly status marry the daughter of a noble family?

If this marriage alliance were to succeed, would she still have a say in her own home?

Madam Gong felt that Gong Qiu was planning to abandon her and her sickly adopted son, intending to focus on grooming Meng Yunzheng as his successor.

She would not allow such a thing to happen, so Madam Gong secretly took action against Meng Yunzheng.

She also knew that Meng Yunzheng had a Doctor Zhao by his side, and she planned to harm them both together.

Meng Yunzheng just wanted her to have such a mindset, so he decided to take advantage of her plot, turning Zhao Xicheng into a Mute and himself into a mute.

Gong Qiu nearly spat blood in anger when he found out.

Meng Yunzheng was an illegitimate child, but that didn’t matter. His father was Gong Qiu, and as long as he was fostered under Madam Gong’s name, his status could still change.

It didn’t matter that he was not smart enough to achieve academic honors, since he was fundamentally decent. After marrying their family’s young lady, getting him a minor official position would be easy.

For the sake of their young lady’s genuine fondness for Meng Yunzheng’s face, the other family was willing to overlook these issues and permit the marriage alliance.

But now he was a mute, possibly incurable for life.

Their family’s young lady wasn’t incapable of finding a match; why should they repeatedly lower their status? Did their family no longer care about their reputation? What about the marriage prospects of their other young ladies?

A mute surely couldn’t be assigned any official duties, so how would they manage in the future?

Thus, the marriage alliance was naturally called off.

Meng Yunzheng demanded an explanation from Gong Qiu, who quickly traced the matter back to Madam Gong, but in the end, he downplayed the incident, lightly punishing Madam Gong before glossing over the matter.

Meng Yunzheng was dissatisfied. His and his only friend’s lives were ruined, and all they got was this indifferent punishment?

Feeling utterly disheartened, he left the Gong Family, declaring that he would go out to seek medical treatment.

Gong Qiu did not stop him, initially sending men to protect and monitor him. After Meng Yunzheng lost his temper several times and it was confirmed that he was indeed seeking medical treatment, Gong Qiu withdrew his men.

That’s why Meng Yunzheng, along with Zhao Xicheng, came to Dongan Province and eventually settled in Jiangyuan County.

Now, over a year has passed, and the original young lady has married; it would be difficult for Gong Qiu to find another suitable marriage alliance candidate in a short period of time.

Moreover, with the Fifth Prince’s offensive becoming more intense recently, Gong Qiu had his hands full and likely couldn’t afford to attend to Meng Yunzheng’s matters anymore.

Now that he had ’cured’ his illness, the timing couldn’t be better.

Shu Yu told Daniu about Meng Yunzheng’s situation and had Daniu take the carriage home first, then carried a food box into the house.

This was left for Meng Yunzheng and Zhao Xicheng; with Daniu and Zhou Qiao around, it would be inconvenient for the two men to dine at home.

After placing the food box down, she returned home with Lu Erbai and Dahu.

As soon as she opened the courtyard door, she heard laughter and joy from inside. Shu Yu turned around to close the courtyard door and saw Daniu kneeling in front of the old lady with Zhou Qiao, respectfully giving her a deep bow.
