The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 891: Chapter 891: Why Not Turn Their Trick Against Them

Song Ci is not entirely hostile towards the concubines; in reality, it’s not like that. If you look at her behavior towards the two concubines of the Elder Lord Song, it’s almost like treating them as younger sisters. She never established strict rules for them or humiliated them. They never lacked food and clothing. The only harsh measure was not allowing them to have children, but wasn’t that a mutually agreed-upon trade-off?

As for the concubine Shen from the palace, it’s not like she was overly warm to her, but she wasn’t particularly hostile either.

The only one she couldn’t stand, the one she disliked, was the seemingly innocent and pure Bai Shuilian, whom she regarded as a typical ”white lotus.”

Perhaps Song Ci was biased from the start. She had acted in many dramas before, and read many books, so she was not at all unfamiliar with such manipulative villainess types, instinctively feeling that this woman was not simple.

Just like what’s happening now, which mother wouldn’t faint from shock upon hearing that her son had come down with pox? The Lu family’s case was an example of genuine fear and concern from the heart.

But Bai Shuilian seemed entirely unaffected, and could calmly speak of fairness and justice?

A concubine pretending to be dignified, trying to show she’s composed and steady!

Who knows if she genuinely cares about the children, or if she only sees them as her bargaining chips for maintaining favor.

Additionally, Song Ci’s first impression of Bai Shuilian was never favorable, due to various reasons, she simply disliked that woman.

If someone said she was intentionally targeting her, she would admit it. After all, as a dignified Grand Madam of first rank, she could display her dislike openly, and who could do anything about it?

Jiang Fula said, ”Could it be, Grand Madam, that you think this is an act orchestrated by the Yuanyuan Residence? I don’t understand, why play such a losing move so openly?”

If the Yuanyuan Residence had truly orchestrated this, and then offered up a scapegoat, what is the purpose?

Just to regain custody of the children?

Such a method of harming the enemy at a thousand cost eight hundred of one’s own is rather foolish, after all, in such a gamble, it’s very possible to have no chance of winning and suffer backlash. Moreover, compared to the other young masters, the Fifth Young Master is younger and the risks they took are greater.

”That’s what I don’t understand,” Song Ci muttered, fiddling with the prayer beads in her hand, ”Making such a bad move only leads to loss, so why do it?”

”Could it be someone else?” Jiang Fula hesitated, ”After all, Bai Concubine is truly injured.”

Not a muscle moved on Song Ci’s face. Her gaze towards Jiang Fula was calm and composed, and she lightly laughed, ”Wouldn’t she be allowed to stage a self-directed play of suffering?”

Jiang Fula: ”...”

If that were the case, it would truly be ruthless.

However, the Grand Madam seemed resolutely convinced it was indeed them who did it.

”Could the target be the Grand Madam or the head of the main courtyard?” Nanny suddenly interjected, ”With the two young masters falling ill at the same time, the Grand Madam would be concerned emotionally and logically and might visit. If you accidentally caught something unclean, your body might not withstand it, and then it might spread to the main courtyard...”

Jiang Fula’s face filled with horror.

If this were the case, it somewhat makes sense. Starting small to see the bigger picture, if the young masters caught the pox, and it spread to the Grand Madam, given the Grand Madam’s age and her illness a few years back, she might not be able to withstand it.

If something happened to the Grand Madam, there would be chaos in the residence. The Prime Minister would surely have to enter a period of mourning, and with the Emperor now wanting to open maritime trade reform, if this arm was broken, wouldn’t the plans have to be temporarily shelved?

Song Ci: ”Wouldn’t that be unlikely?”

”The servant thinks, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Should we interrogate them?”

Song Ci laughed, ”That’s only our speculative suspicion. Without concrete evidence, all leads to that frosty dew, how could they leave any loose ends?”

”But...”

Song Ci’s eyes half-closed, ”However, the more they do, the more likely they are to leave traces. Why not counterplot them?”
