The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 888: Chapter 888: Surfacing

Bai Shuilian lay blankly on the couch, staring at the ceiling beam in a daze, until a cold voice nearby made her sit up and look over.

Madam Quan closed her mouth, furrowed her brows, a hint of displeasure flashing in her eyes.

”Is Madam showing her face to this old servant?”

Bai Shuilian clenched her hand at her side and said, ”Mom, you said if I could be ruthless, I could bring the two children back. But now?”

”Isn’t everything as you wished? The Young Master has returned to You Ran Courtyard,” Madam Quan said blandly.

Upon hearing this, Bai Shuilian clenched her molars tightly in anger, her eyes reddening as she spoke, ”But this is smallpox. If not handled well, Yi’er might... Mom, you personally watched over his birth, you even carried him out yourself, can’t you show him some compassion?”

Madam Quan’s heart stirred; she licked her lips but didn’t look at Bai Shuilian, instead gazing elsewhere: ”As subordinates, we only have the duty to obey orders. Regardless of you or me, without your life, how can you talk of protecting the children?”

She conjured a jade bottle as if by magic and handed it over.

Bai Shuilian’s lips quivered as she reached out to take it, clutching it tightly in her palm, tears rolling down her cheeks. After a long while, she took a deep breath.

”Mom, this move seems to have failed. Even if Yi’er and the others catch this illness, they’re only suffering for nothing. The most crucial people in this mansion won’t be harmed. Instead, we’ve startled the snake, and we’re at risk of being exposed,” Bai Shuilian said through gritted teeth. ”In my opinion, it’s better to target the core pillar of this mansion. As long as the divine needle remains, this mansion is hard to overthrow.”

Madam Quan replied, ”I will report this matter to the master, but it won’t be as simple as you think. Earlier when I accompanied you in kneeling there, there were at least two people in hiding at Chunhui Hall and one following the old madam.”

Bai Shuilian gasped sharply.

The defense was unexpectedly tight.

”To target such a crucial person is not easy; we can only look for opportunities in small things. Madam, you’ve been in Song Mansion for just over a year; why rush?”

Bai Shuilian said, ”Given this, why make such a move? What’s gained besides Yi’er suffering?”

Her tone carried a trace of resentment.

Madam Quan glanced at her and said, ”Why can’t something come of it? It’s about gathering some foundational information at that courtyard, isn’t it? Moreover, she personally went to see the Young Master, whose health was already poor. What if evil toxins infiltrated her body?”

Bai Shuilian felt a chill in her heart; was it worth risking her child’s life just to probe the situation?

”Madam, we are all just subordinates; we only follow the master’s arrangements,” Madam Quan said.

Bai Shuilian closed her eyes briefly, her voice tinged with sorrow, ”When will this ever end?”

In her heart, she had a thought: if the Song Mansion fell, what future would there be for her and her children?

”Madam, the one truly worth considering is Miss Wan. She’s the most esteemed; have you forgotten the hierarchy?”

Bai Shuilian shuddered all over, biting her lip, and said, ”But now, I’m afraid we’ve aroused their suspicion. The old madam’s gaze makes me feel as if there’s no hiding from her...”

She couldn’t discern what that person was thinking; any offhand comment might lead her astray.

”Isn’t there still a pawn to discard?” Madam Quan said, gazing at her meaningfully, ”But Madam, you’ll have to endure some hardship.”

Bai Shuilian gave a bitter smile and said, ”At this point, what hardship can’t I bear?”
