The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 889: Chapter 889: Cutting Off the Tail

In the dead of night, Song Ci was awakened by a commotion.

Chun Fen removed the floor-standing gauze lampshade, turned up the light, and brought water to help Song Ci soothe her throat.

”What’s wrong? What time is it now? Why is it so noisy outside?”

Nanny stood aside, holding a large coat, and said, ”An incident occurred over at Peaceful Garden.”

Song Ci paused: ”What happened?”

”Concubine Bai was stabbed.”

Song Ci’s eyes widened: ”Did I hear that wrong? How did she get stabbed? Who did it?”

”It was that girl Frost Dew near Concubine Bai. Jiang Fula found out about Frost Dew, and when people went to seize the girl, she pressed the attack on Concubine Bai, causing her to get injured here.” Nanny pointed at the abdomen.

Song Ci laughed angrily: ”What’s Jiang Fula doing? Trying to capture a girl, but letting people get hurt?”

Nanny said, ”Since it was late night and also inside the inner courtyard, those sent were several stern matriarchs from the mansion’s Punishment Hall.”

Song Ci mentally blocked the sound.

Aristocratic families in the capital often set up their own rules, and places like the Punishment Hall can punish, used for disciplining disciples or servants within the house; the Song Family is no exception.

Song Ci hadn’t witnessed the Song Family’s Punishment Hall, but she knew there were some trained punishment mammas and monitors inside, specifically used for interrogating spies and traitors.

Sending stern mammas was not without reason, avoiding issues between genders.

”Even those mammas couldn’t handle one girl?”

”At that time, Frost Dew was right beside Concubine Bai.”

Song Ci frowned and said: ”What did Jiang Fula say?”

Nanny said: ”Jiang Fula is outside the courtyard; does Madam want to see him?”

See him, of course, there’s definitely something more behind this, and Song Ci certainly wants to know.

”Let him report. I’m just an old woman, so there’s nothing to avoid. Help me dress.”

Nanny nodded to Chun Fen, then left.

Song Ci had just sat in the main hall when Jiang Fula followed Nanny into the room, and as he entered, he knelt down and kowtowed ceremoniously.

”You’re not that young anymore, no need to kneel back and forth. Stand up and reply.”

Jiang Fula said very respectfully: ”Sorry for disturbing Madam’s rest, it’s due to my incompetence.”

”Let’s skip the formalities. What happened?”

”I discovered it was Frost Dew beside Concubine Bai, tracking how she left the mansion and how she obtained clothing and contaminants from smallpox patients, then stained Third Master’s clothes and...”

Song Ci interrupted: ”Hold on, are you sure it was Frost Dew?”

”She left the mansion several days ago, with records and eyewitnesses at the gate.”

Song Ci frowned: ”Why did she do this?”

”On the surface, it’s to seek revenge on Concubine Bai.” Jiang Fula explained, ”Since Concubine Shen entered the mansion, Concubine Bai was displeased and often beat and scolded Frost Dew. Frost Dew held grudges, intending to secretly harm the Fifth Young Master. The Fourth Young Master was unintentionally caught in this mess.”

”On the surface?” Song Ci caught on the term.

Jiang Fula was silent for a while: ”Frost Dew might be a spy planted by the remnants of the Xia Clan within our mansion.”

Song Ci coughed, what’s this about spies everywhere, like a buy one, get one free deal, how come there’re always remnants and spies everywhere?

”And Frost Dew, is she executed?”

Jiang Fula nodded: ”After stabbing Concubine Bai, she bit her tongue and committed suicide.”

Song Ci clapped her hands: ”That’s right, dead without proof is just right. Whether she’s a spy or not remains to be deliberated, but look at you, how swiftly you’ve found all this—doesn’t it seem like someone prepared the evidence chain beforehand? Now that the person is dead, dead without proof, doesn’t it feel like cutting off one’s tail to survive?”

Jiang Fula was stunned.
