Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The door to the medical ward slid shut with a low click, sealing off the lingering scent of cordite, gunsmoke, and damp concrete from the outer corridor.

Guo Jiong remained outside at the central barricade, directing his perimeter guards to maintain a watchful sweep over the auxiliary ventilation shafts.

Song Yan guided Commander Han Zheng and Lin Qing inside. He walked over to a wall-mounted stainless steel cabinet, unlocked the latch with a small brass key, and pulled out a fresh roll of sterile gauze, a bottle of concentrated antiseptic solution, and a small roll of medical tape.

”Our medical stock is running low, but we keep a few clean dressing packs reserved,” Song Yan said, setting the supplies down on the stainless steel tray beside the examination table. He turned toward Han Zheng, observing the commander’s unyielding posture. ”I can apply the dressing if you prefer, Commander.”

”No,” Han Zheng replied smoothly, his deep voice carrying a quiet, absolute authority. ”I’ll handle it.”

Song Yan nodded respectfully, recognizing the unwritten boundary. He took two steps back, leaning against the far doorframe to give them space while remaining present.

Lin Qing unfastened the top clasp of her blanket, letting it drape loosely over the back of the chair before taking a seat on the edge of the examination table. Her movements were fluid and composed, devoid of the hesitation typical of an injured patient. Her eyes followed Han Zheng as he stepped toward the metal tray, unscrewed the cap of the antiseptic bottle, and poured a precise amount onto a wad of sterile cotton.

Up close, the sheer physical presence of Han Zheng was undeniable. He towered over the small medical ward, his broad shoulders easily blocking out the harsh fluorescent light behind him. Yet, as he reached out toward her face, his movements slowed down to an astonishing degree.

”This will sting,” Han Zheng murmured softly.

His calloused fingers brushed lightly against the hair near her left temple, carefully parting the dark strands to reveal the blood-stained bandage underneath. With practiced, meticulous precision, he unpeeled the old medical tape, peeling away the soiled gauze layer by layer.

Lin Qing didn’t flinch as the cool air hit the raw, swollen skin along her hairline.

As the last layer of cloth came off, a jagged surgical scar became visible, running from her upper temple down toward the back of her ear. The center of the wound had split slightly near the surface stitches, oozing a thin line of fresh crimson where her rapid movements during the earlier firefight had strained the skin.

Han Zheng’s jaw tightened slightly at the sight of the scar, a flicker of raw, suppressed pain passing through his dark eyes before he masked it beneath his steady discipline. He gently pressed the antiseptic-soaked cotton against the edge of the wound.

A sharp, burning sensation radiated across her scalp, but Lin Qing kept her breathing perfectly even, her eyes locked onto his face.

What struck her most was not the pain of the antiseptic, but the extreme contrast of his touch. His fingers were rough, scarred from countless weapons handles and harsh elements, yet he applied the dressing with an almost fragile gentleness, as though he were afraid that a single ounce of excessive pressure might break her.

As his hand brushed near her jawline to anchor the fresh gauze, that same strange, phantom warmth ignited deep within her chest. It wasn’t a sudden, dramatic memory or a dramatic flashback; it was a pure, physical reflex. Her body knew his touch. Her nervous system recognized his proximity as a place of absolute safety—a conclusion her mind was currently analyzing with sharp, cold logic.

”You have questions,” Han Zheng said quietly, his eyes focused entirely on aligning the fresh strip of white gauze over her temple. ”Ask them.”

Lin Qing didn’t hesitate. She had been observing him, processing every word spoken in the hall, and logging every detail since he stepped through the blast door.

”Who am I to you?” Lin Qing asked directly, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of emotional tremor. ”Lieutenant Chen called me Sister-in-Law. Guo Jiong spoke as if we had fought side by side. I need to know my position.”

Han Zheng secured the top edge of the fresh bandage with a piece of medical tape, his fingers lingering for a fraction of a second against her hairline before he slowly withdrew his hands. He picked up a fresh roll of gauze from the tray.

”Your name is Lin Qing,” Han Zheng answered, his voice deep, grounded, and steady. ”You are my wife and someone my soilders consider their second-in-command command now. Beyond the chain of command, you are the person I trust most in this world. We have survived the collapse of the city, the winter in the high ridge, and dozens of operations where the odds were stacked entirely against us. What Lieutenant Chen said is true. To me, you are my wife and to everyone else in our squad, you are family.”

Lin Qing absorbed his words calmly, sifting through the information like a report. ”If I was or am your wife and trusted to that degree, how did I end up at the base of a cliff with severe head trauma?”

Beside the doorway, Song Yan shifted slightly, listening intently.

Han Zheng took a slow, deep breath, his chest expanding as he looked directly into her eyes, refusing to hide anything from her.

”During an extraction operation along the ridge, the heat shift fractured the high cliff face,” Han Zheng explained, his voice turning cold as ice. ”You were on the exterior ledge clearing infected when a multi-ton ice cornice detached directly over your head. A massive ice slab sheared the entire concrete ledge off the cliff and took you along. We searched the entire valley floor before we found you.”

Lin Qing stared at him, her eyes reflecting the cool fluorescent light. The narrative fit perfectly. It explained why her combat instincts were so refined, why her sidearm felt like a natural extension of her arm, and why her head injury was severe enough to wipe her structural memory.

”I see,” Lin Qing said softly, processing the implications. She didn’t panic over the lost memories, nor did she express frustration at her inability to recall his face. Instead, her mind immediately calculated her present situation. ”So my combat proficiency remains, but my contextual history is gone. And you came here expecting to bring me back.”

”I came here to find you,” Han Zheng answered firmly, his eyes unwavering. ”Your memories, and your past do not change the fact that you are alive. I am not here to force you to remember things that your mind isn’t ready to recall. But I will not leave you behind in an unsealed bunker.”

Lin Qing looked at him for a long moment. There was no pressure in his tone, no demanding expectations, and no attempt to manipulate her vulnerability. He gave her facts, offered security, and treated her with the exact same respect she felt within her own habits.

The door opened slightly, and Song Yan pushed off the frame, stepping further into the room. The depot leader looked at Han Zheng, his expression serious and pragmatic.

”Commander Han,” Song Yan spoke up, his tone calm and businesslike. ”Now that her injury is dressed, we need to speak about the reality of the depot.”

Han Zheng turned his head, his posture instantly shifting back into the commanding officer of an elite force. ”Go ahead, Leader Song.”

Song Yan crossed his arms, leaning against the edge of a supply counter. ”We rescued and moved our survivors into this underground depot, we thought the heavy blast doors would give us a permanent sanctuary. But the reality is that this depot was decommissioned years before the apocalypse.”

Song Yan gestured toward the humming air vent above them. ”Our primary air filtration units are running on secondary backup filters that are already clogged with mineral dust. Our power cells are down to less than eighteen percent capacity. We don’t have the technical equipment to repair the main geothermal generator, and our medical stock—as you can see—is practically nonexistent.”

Song Yan looked directly at Han Zheng, dropping all remnants of suspicion. ”Guo Jiong and I have been keeping a lot of civilians alive down here. But we do not have all the resources to keep this place running for long term.”

Han Zheng listened attentively, calculating the logistics in his head within seconds.

”Our main base is fully fortified,” Han Zheng stated clearly. ”We have operational geothermal power, clean water filtration arrays, medical facilities, and active agricultural greenhouses. We have heavy armored transports stationed at the base of the mountain pass, capable of moving your entire population in multiple shifts.”

Song Yan’s eyes widened slightly in genuine surprise. ”You’re offering to evacuate all of Sector 4?”

”I am offering a joint resettlement agreement,” Han Zheng clarified, his voice smooth and authoritative. ”Your security team under Guo Jiong is disciplined and capable. You have managed this depot under severe resource constraints. If you merge your people with our base, your people will receive immediate food, warmth, and medical care, and your guards will be integrated into our perimeter defense network.”

Song Yan looked at Han Zheng, then turned his gaze toward Lin Qing, who sat calmly on the metal table, her fresh white bandage neatly pinned against her dark hair.

Song Yan knew that Lin Qing didn’t belong in a crumbling, dark subterranean bunker. He had watched her spend her time sitting quietly in the depot, sharp, distant, and trapped in a place that offered her no answers. Seeing her fight alongside Han Zheng earlier had proved beyond a shadow of a doubt where her true home lay.

”That is more than a fair trade, Commander,” Song Yan said, a heavy weight lifting from his shoulders as he offered a firm handshake. ”Sector 4 accepts your offer. We will begin packing the essential supplies immediately.”

Han Zheng shook Song Yan’s hand with a firm, decisive grip. ”My squad will secure the outer entry hall and establish a heavy defense perimeter until our main transport convoy arrives at the lower access road.”

With the agreement settled, Song Yan nodded respectfully to both of them and stepped out of the medical bay to inform Guo Jiong and begin organizing the civilians for the upcoming relocation.

The medical ward fell quiet once more.

Han Zheng turned back to Lin Qing, who remained seated on the examination table. She was looking at her gloves, flexing her fingers to test her grip strength after the physical strain of the firefight.

”The transport convoy will take a few hours to navigate the lower mountain passes through the snow,” Han Zheng said softly. ”You can rest here until we are ready to move.”

Lin Qing looked up at him, her eyes steady and thoughtful. ”I don’t need rest. But I have a question.”

”Ask,” he replied.

”When we return to your base... what happens if my memories never come back?” she asked quietly, her guard softening just enough to reveal a sliver of genuine curiosity. ”What if the person I was before the fall is gone permanently?”

Han Zheng looked at her, the dark intensity in his eyes softening into a warmth that reached deep into her chest.

”Then we start from right here,” Han Zheng answered without a single second of hesitation. ”You don’t need to force yourself to remember the past to have a place beside us, Lin Qing. You are my wife and you will always have a home in our base.”

Lin Qing stared at him for a long moment, taking in the absolute truth in his voice. She reached up, lightly touching the edge of her fresh bandage, feeling the steady beat of her own pulse beneath her fingers.

For the first time since waking up, the deep, hollow void inside her mind didn’t feel like a curse anymore. She stood up from the examination table, pulled her blanket over her shoulders, and picked up her sidearm.

”Understood,” Lin Qing said, a faint, almost imperceptible tilt appearing at the corner of her lips. ”Then let’s go secure the perimeter.”
