Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Inside the dark, frost-dusted security annex, time seemed to grind to a absolute halt. The ambient temperature was bone-chilling, yet not a single member of Han Zheng’s expedition unit made the slightest movement.

Through the thin, cracked concrete wall, the rhythmic crunch of boots in fresh snow drift grew steadily louder.

Crunch... crunch... crunch.

Han Zheng’s mind worked with rapid precision. His heightened senses picked up the subtle cadence of the intruder’s approach. This wasn’t the frantic, disorganized shuffling of a panicked civilian or the mindless, dragging gait of a frozen zombie. The heavy footsteps were measured, deliberate, and perfectly spaced—the mark of a battle-tested professional conducting a routine perimeter sweep.

Through the broken, ice-crusted window frame, a shadow lengthened across the pristine snow. A heavily armored mercenary stepped into view, his face obscured by a dark ballistic mask and goggles. He carried a bullpup assault rifle held at high ready, his thumb resting lightly against the safety catch.

As the mercenary passed directly beneath the broken window, he paused, his visor tilting slightly to inspect a dark stain on the snowbank nearby.

Han Zheng didn’t wait for the man to raise his weapon or check his radio.

Reaching out through the window frame, Han Zheng unleashed a localized, hyper-focused thread of kinetic force. The invisible pulse wrapped instantly around the mercenary’s throat and torso like a heavy steel vise, completely dampening the sound of his startled gasp and pulling him headfirst through the narrow window into the pitch-black annex.

Before the mercenary’s boots could even strike the floor, Han Zheng caught him by the collar. With a smooth, effortless exertion of strength, Han Zheng drove his hand against the man’s cervical vertebrae, delivering a precise, silent strike that rendered the guard instantly unconscious before he could pull his trigger or touch his comms unit.

The entire neutralization took less than three seconds. The annex fell back into total, undisturbed silence, save for the soft howling of the blizzard outside.

Lu Feng exhaled slowly, lowering his rifle as he stepped over to assist Han Zheng. Beside them, the rest of the squad maintained cover, keeping their muzzles trained on the dark doorway in case the guard had a shadow partner.

”Clean,” Lu Feng muttered under his breath, kneeling beside the unconscious mercenary. ”He didn’t even get a chance to open his mouth.”

Han Zheng immediately began stripping the guard’s outer gear, his sharp eyes scrutinizing every piece of military-grade equipment. ”Check his vest, radio frequencies, and pocket gear.”

Together, they thoroughly searched the captive. The mercenary wore heavy composite body armor bearing stripped-off serial tags, thermal lining, and a high-frequency radio unit clipped to his chest harness. In his inner vest pocket, Lu Feng pulled out a folded, laminated digital field map display showing detailed floor plans of the commercial logistics center.

”Look at this, Commander,” Lu Feng whispered, spreading the illuminated map on the concrete floor between them.

Han Zheng leaned in close, examining the highlighted red icons marking defensive positions across the main distribution building. ”Nine total,” Han Zheng noted softly, his voice cold and analytical. ”Gao Feng didn’t bring a mob. He stripped away the low-level grunts during Lin Tao’s revolt and kept only his core elite—six battle-hardened mercenaries, his two powered enforcers, and himself.”

”Nine elite operators in a defensible position is deadlier than fifty untrained grunts,” Lu Feng remarked, pointing at red hazard symbols marked near the warehouse’s central fuel storage bay. ”And look here... they’ve rigged proximity charges.”

Han Zheng’s jaw tightened as he traced the wiring schematics on the map. ”They set secondary explosive detonators around the high-grade diesel tanks and the heavy medical generators. If they get cornered or overwhelmed, Gao Feng can trigger a localized demolition to destroy the entire supply and take everyone down with them.”

”That changes everything,” Lu Feng said, his expression darkening. ”A direct assault through the front loading bay will just push them back into the fuel depot. If they panic and blow the charges, we lose the fuel, the medical generators, and potentially half our team.”

”We aren’t giving them the chance to panic,” Han Zheng said smoothly, folding the digital map and securing it inside his pouch. ”We need a synchronized breach. We disarm those charges and neutralize his two powered enforcers simultaneously before Gao Feng even realizes his perimeter guard is gone.”

Pulling out his encrypted satellite communicator, Han Zheng keyed the private channel line to Lin Qing’s approaching transport.

Miles away on the treacherous mountain pass, the heavy armored transport cut through the blinding whiteout like an iron battering ram. The vehicle’s massive, high-output snowplow pushed aside three-foot drifts with ease, its twin diesel engines roaring with heavy, continuous power.

Inside the reinforced troop compartment, the interior was dimly lit by red tactical LED strips. Ah Hua, Xiao Li, Old Wang, and Da Yong sat in full combat harness, quietly conducting final checks on their weaponry.

Xiao Li was carefully wiping down his heavy riot shield, his bare arms occasionally shimmering with a subtle, rock-hard mineral layer as he practiced channeling his Earth Hardening power. Beside him, Ah Hua sat with his heavy, belt-fed machine gun resting across his lap, his massive frame effortlessly supporting the weapon’s weight. Old Wang was adjusting the thermal optic on his sniper rifle, while Da Yong sat behind the secondary driver control console, monitoring vehicle diagnostics.

The dashboard comms unit crackled to life with a quiet click.

”Lin Qing, do you read me?” Han Zheng’s voice came through crisp and clear.

Lin Qing, holding the heavy steering wheel with firm, steady hands, tapped her ear-piece transmitter. ”I read you, Han Zheng. We are five minutes out from your sector. What’s your status?”

”We just silently took down one of Gao Feng’s perimeter guards,” Han Zheng reported smoothly. ”We recovered a field map from his vest. Gao Feng’s total force consists of nine men—six elite mercenaries, two powered users, and Gao Feng himself. However, they have rigged proximity charges directly to the central fuel tanks as a fail-safe.”

Lin Qing’s eyes narrowed as she watched the swirling snow through the reinforced glass. ”They intend to scorch the earth if they get cornered.”

”Precisely,” Han Zheng replied. ”A blunt assault from the front will force them into detonating the supply depot. We need to alter our vector. I want your team to breach through the rear loading gates to secure the fuel bay and cut off their detonator control. My squad will slip into the upper catwalks under thermal cloaks and eliminate their high-ground fire positions.”

”Understood,” Lin Qing said without a second of hesitation. ”I am adjusting our approach route to the south loading dock. We will use the heavy transport’s battering plow to breach the rear gate on your mark. Ah Hua and Xiao Li will take point to secure the fuel charges.”

”Coordinates transmitted to your navigation terminal,” Han Zheng added. ”Maintain radio silence until the breach commences.”

”Copy that. Stay safe,” Lin Qing replied softly, before clicking off the comms channel.

She glanced into the rear rearview mirror, her clear eyes meeting the steady gazes of the four soldiers behind her. ”You heard the Commander. Gao Feng has rigged explosives near our target supplies. Xiao Li, Ah Hua—as soon as we break the rear gate, your sole priority is securing the fuel bay perimeter and neutralizing any mercenary near the detonator controls.”

”Understood, Sister-in-law Qing!” Xiao Li nodded, his skin hardening into a dull, stone-like sheath across his arms and face as he gripped his shield.

”Old Wang,” Lin Qing continued, ”you’ll take overwatch on the transport’s roof turret. Da Yong, keep the engine primed for immediate extraction.”

The squad answered with silent nods, their hands tightening around their weapons as the transport rounded the final mountain bend, nearing the complex perimeter.

Back at the commercial logistics hub, the blizzard continued its relentless assault, whipping sheets of white powder across the rusted chain-link fences.

Han Zheng and Lu Feng silently slipped out of the guard annex, motioning for their squad members to follow. Covered in their custom thermal cloaks, the five remaining men moved like ghosts across the snow-covered loading ramp, scaling a secondary emergency ladder that led directly to the warehouse’s upper ventilation catwalks.

Inside the cavernous, pitch-black structure, the scale of the facility was staggering. Towering storage racks stretched sixty feet into the gloom, stacked high with frozen wooden pallets, abandoned industrial crates, and shipping containers. Down on the main concrete floor, near the central forklift lane, a makeshift camp was lit by the dim, flickering orange glow of a single heating lantern.

Around the light, Gao Feng’s men were moving with methodical efficiency. Two mercenaries armed with suppressed carbines stood guard on raised platform docks, while three others were securing heavy crates of ammunition onto a flatbed transport truck.

Near the back fuel depot, standing beside a heavy steel pillar, were Gao Feng’s two powered enforcers.

In the center of the camp stood Gao Feng himself, reviewing a clipboard under the lantern light. His weathered, scarred face was grim as he looked at his wrist watch.

He clicked his radio channel, his voice harsh and demanding. ”Unit Four, report in. You missed your three-minute perimeter mark.”

Static filled the speaker. No answer came through.

Gao Feng’s eyes narrowed instantly. He clicked the radio again, his tone dropping an octave into high tension. ”Unit Four, respond immediately.”

Silence.

Gao Feng didn’t waste a second asking a third time. His instincts instantly flared to red alert. ”We have breached perimeter!” Gao Feng barked, dropping his clipboard and unholstering his heavy sidearm. ”All units, weapons hot! Powered vanguard, seal the central aisles! Someone just took down Unit Four!”

Instantly, the quiet warehouse erupted into motion.

Up on the high catwalks, concealed entirely in the dark shadows of the ceiling rafters, Han Zheng looked down at the scene with cold, unyielding focus. He raised his hand, signaling Lu Feng to hold position.

Through his earpiece, a soft, precise tone chimed twice. It was Lin Qing’s signal—her heavy transport was in position right outside the rear loading doors.

Han Zheng raised his right hand, his fingers curling as kinetic energy began to hum quietly around his palm, vibrating the air with immense, suppressed power.

”Execute,” Han Zheng whispered into his comms.

The very next second, the entire rear concrete wall of the warehouse shattered with a deafening, metallic roar as Lin Qing’s heavy armored transport smashed through the rear loading doors at full throttle.
