Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The biting mountain air was thick with dense, freezing mist as the seasonal thaw set in across Sector 7-A. Drops of melting runoff cascaded down the jagged rock face, turning the exposed stone slick with black ice while knee-deep, heavy slush choked the lower access road of the abandoned Ore Processing Complex.

Perched on a narrow stone ledge, Han Zheng adjusted his collar. Beside him, Old Wang crouched in the damp, shifting snow, scanning the main entrance through a thermal optic. Their SUV remained hidden two miles back in a snow-filled ravine where the wet ground wouldn’t trap their tires.

”No thermal signatures at the haulage gates,” Old Wang reported. ”The road is a mess of mud and melting slush. Any old foot tracks were washed out by the runoff.”

”We check Shaft 3 first,” Han Zheng commanded, his voice cold and steady. ”It sits highest on the cliff face and gets the least melt overflow. If survivors ever used this complex, that’s where they’d set up an observation post.”

Using climbing picks along the slick, wet rock face, the two men made their way toward Shaft 3’s upper maintenance platform. The heavy steel access grate had been forced open—bent outward by a raw, mechanical force that certainly hadn’t come from shifting ice. Han Zheng drew his rifle while Old Wang pulled his combat blade to cover the flank.

They slipped inside, stepping into pitch-black, suffocating silence. Long icicles along the high ceiling were steadily dripping, the sharp plip-clop of water echoing through the cavernous air. Massive steel conveyor belts ran above them, rusting in the damp humidity. Abandoned ore carts sat frozen on narrow tracks beside scattered iron tools, discarded helmets, and wet coal dust.

”Watch the overhead structural beams,” Han Zheng whispered, his eyes sweeping the high trusses where shadows clustered thickest. ”The thaw makes these old mine roofs unstable.”

Before Old Wang could answer, a faint, rhythmic crunch echoed from the high crane platform twenty feet above them—the unmistakable sound of claws grinding against ice-crusted steel.

Han Zheng raised his weapon instantly. Two outlines emerged against the rusted metal framework.

They were not human zombies.

Two massive, frost-mutated snow leopards clung to the structural girders. Their thick, matted fur dripped with meltwater, calcified bone growths protruding along their spines like jagged armor. Driven down into the subterranean shafts as the warming slopes flooded outside, the infected predators had claimed the dry upper shafts as their hunting den.

Without a sound, the lead leopard coiled its muscular hind legs and launched itself straight down toward Old Wang.

”Contact!” Han Zheng barked, snapping his rifle up and firing a silent two-round burst.

The suppressed rounds slammed into the beast’s chest mid-air, the kinetic force shifting its trajectory just enough for Old Wang to roll hard across the wet concrete floor. The mutated leopard hit the ground with a heavy metallic thud, its claws raking across the stone where Old Wang had been standing a fraction of a second earlier.

The second leopard snarled—a wet, raspy growl echoing through the shaft—and dropped from the high rafters toward Han Zheng. He side-stepped with cold, practiced efficiency, letting the leaping beast pass within inches of his coat before driving his combat knife upward beneath its jaw. The creature thrashing violently on the floor was finished off instantly by Old Wang’s swift point-blank shot. Han Zheng turned immediately and placed three precise rounds into the first beast’s flank, neutralizing the second threat before it could pounce again.

Silence settled back over the vast chamber, broken only by the steady dripping of ceiling runoff. Old Wang wiped dark blood off his sleeve, checking his rifle’s chamber with steady hands. ”Mutated leopards... driven inside by the melting slopes.”

”Keep your eyes open,” Han Zheng said, scanning the surrounding darkness. ”Where there are predators, there was food.”

They spent the next twenty minutes thoroughly searching the upper administrative offices, the breakrooms, and the primary ore sorting bay. Signs of past human presence were everywhere: coal-smudged footprints frozen into dried mud, empty ration tins, hand-stitched wool sleeping mats, and wooden directional arrows carved onto rock walls pointing deeper into the mountain network.

Old Wang knelt beside a cold fire pit in the administrative office, sifting through the damp embers. ”Dead cold. No thermal residue at all. A group definitely lived in these upper shafts, but they packed up their gear and abandoned the site.”

”They migrated deeper,” Han Zheng noted, examining a crude, faded map painted on the stone wall showing interconnecting shafts running toward the lower valley complexes. ”The entire upper site is completely deserted now.”

Walking to an iron guard booth near the entrance, Han Zheng pulled out their long-range field communicator. Sector 7-A was a dead end; pushing further on foot into the unstable lower shafts without word from the rest of the search fleet was an unnecessary risk during the thaw.

”We set up a temporary forward relay right here,” Han Zheng instructed, setting his gear on a dusty wooden desk. ”We maintain radio silence, hold position, and wait for progress updates from the other search units.”

Old Wang nodded, hanging a thick insulation tarp over the booth’s broken window. ”Understood. We wait.”

Deep beneath the mountain core, two miles to the south...

The bright, warm glow of the secondary depot’s fully restored fluorescent lighting flooded the residential corridors once again. The heavy, comforting hum of the air filtration system cycled fresh air through every subterranean sector, dispelling the lingering damp chill.

In the lower residential quarter, the rising panic had completely evaporated. Families were settling back onto their woolen cots, and maintenance teams were making their final rounds.

Guo Jiong pulled the heavy iron door of the auxiliary storage room shut, waiting until the latch clicked firmly into place to seal out the ambient noise of the intake chamber.

He turned to face Song Yan, resting his hands on his belt. His chest heaved with quiet, suppressed emotion.

”Alright, Guo Jiong,” Song Yan said, leaning back against the wooden desk and folding his arms. ”What’s going on? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost out there.”

”Do you remember when my daughter and I first arrived here?” Guo Jiong asked, his voice dropping to a low, serious whisper. ”The story I told you about how we survived in the village?”

Song Yan’s brow furrowed slightly as he recalled the conversation. ”Of course. You said a squad of elite military personnel escorted your group to safety.”

”Right,” Guo Jiong said, taking a step closer. ”And do you remember what I told you about my daughter’s awakening fever?”

”I remember,” Song Yan said softly, his tone turning grave. ”You said a soldier stepped up, checked her symptoms, and stopped you from giving her the wrong medication and save her life.”

”Yes,” Guo Jiong said, his eyes burning with absolute conviction. ”And do you remember what I called that officer?”

”You called her a female commander,” Song Yan replied, the memories floating back. ”A brilliant, cold soldier who traded raw seeds and promised to protect the villagers and lead them to safety.”

Guo Jiong gestured with a heavy, calloused hand toward the closed iron door.

”That woman standing out there right now,” Guo Jiong declared, his voice thick with certainty. ”The woman who just directed my guards, diagnosed our air intake system... that is her. That is Lin Qing.”

Silence filled the small room, heavy and absolute. Song Yan froze, the words hitting him with physical force.

”Are you... are you certain?” Song Yan whispered, staring at his friend. ”She has completely lost her memory after the accident on the mountain. She doesn’t even remember her name.”

”My daughter recognized her the second she walked down the residential hallway!” Guo Jiong said passionately. ”And I just stood two feet from her in the emergency light while she gave me direct orders to clear that valve pin. I know her face, Song Yan. I know her voice. It’s the voice that kept my child alive.”

Song Yan stood frozen as every single piece of the puzzle fell violently into place.

Her cold detachment under pressure. Her instant, flawless analysis of their security flaws. Her effortless command over the crowd during the blackout. Her precise, authoritative instructions to the security team.

She was not just a random soilder but an elite one, and according to what Guo Jiong had told him, she was a part of a squad as well.

”Lin Qing,” Song Yan repeated slowly, feeling the immense weight behind the name.

”She saved my daughter’s life,” Guo Jiong said softly. ”And today she saved our entire depot. She might not remember who she is right now, Song Yan... but her body, her instincts, and her heart haven’t forgotten a single thing.”

Song Yan turned slowly toward the heavy iron door, his heart pounding against his ribs. Everything had changed in an instant. The mysterious survivor he had rescued out of the air was not just any random survivor, she was the savior that Guo Jiong had always talked about.

Song Yan wondered if her team was out there, searching for her in the snow.
