Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The world went from structural stability to absolute vertical chaos in less than a second.

When the multi-ton ice cornice fractured above the loading dock, the structural failure was absolute. The concrete shelf beneath Lin Qing’s boots exploded into a jagged shower of gravel, pulverizing rock, and bent rebar.

Lin Qing’s body reacted instantly on pure muscle memory. She threw her center of gravity backward, attempting to vault off a piece of falling masonry toward the relative safety of the inner structural ledge. But the volume of falling ice was overwhelming. A solid, three-hundred-pound block of frozen snow slammed directly into her right shoulder with crushing force, spinning her mid-air and pitching her headfirst into the open abyss of the ravine.

The howling wind screamed in her ears as she tumbled through three hundred feet of freezing air. Snow and shattered ice swept around her like a blinding white veil, blurring the sheer canyon walls into dark streaks of frozen granite.

Lin Qing forced her limbs into a stable star position, desperately fighting the air pressure to stabilize her trajectory while calculating velocity, drop height, and impact angles.

No parachute. No rappel line. No gravity nullification.

Her mind worked with cold, mechanical efficiency, but pure human physics was relentless. Falling into a frozen riverbed at terminal velocity meant instantaneous, non-survivable annihilation.

Before she could adjust her posture to attempt a desperate sliding contact against the canyon wall, a heavy fragment of shattered concrete whipped down through the debris field.

CRACK!

The concrete slab clipped the left side of her head with brutal momentum.

Pain didn’t register immediately—only a deafening, metallic ringing sound that drowned out the roar of the avalanche.

A blinding flash of white light burst behind her eyelids, followed instantly by overwhelming, sickening vertigo. Her long-range comms earpiece and the heavy radio receiver strapped to her shoulder took the secondary impact. Delicate copper wires snapped, microchips pulverized into fine powder, and the lithium battery housing ruptured silently.

Lin Qing’s dark eyes flickered as her central nervous system shut down from the blunt trauma. As her body continued its lethal plunge toward the frozen rocks below, her vision faded into suffocating blackness. Her limbs went completely limp, leaving her entirely at the mercy of the void.

Down in the shadowy basin of the central ravine, where the towering cliff walls cut off all direct sunlight, a small party was picking their way through the deep snow of the frozen riverbed. They wore thick, multi-layered coats made of reinforced canvas, carrying weathered, custom-modified rifles across their backs.

This was an independent survivor group—a tight-knit community of around thirty people, including men, women, and children, who survived the harsh mountain winter by hiding inside an abandoned, subterranean secondary military depot two hours deeper along the ridge.

At the front of the scavengers stood their captain. He was a tall, lean man in his late twenties with a sharp jawline and hazel eyes that constantly scanned the perimeter.

His posture was crisp, disciplined, and rigid—the undeniable mark of a former high-tier soldier from the old world before the apocalypse shattered the global order. Having lost his original military squad during the initial outbreak, he now dedicated every breath to protecting this small band of isolated survivors.

”Keep your eyes on the high ledges,” the captain ordered, his voice low and steady. ”The heat shift is softening the upper ice sheets. One wrong step and an overhang drops straight on our heads.”

A thunderous, bone-rattling roar suddenly echoed from the high cliffs above them. The ground beneath their boots shuddered violently as thousands of tons of ice, pulverized rock, and concrete came cascading down the sheer rock face.

”Get back! Cover against the rock wall!” the captain shouted, thrusting his arm out to push his men into the shallow overhang of a cliff nook.

Through the swirling, blinding cloud of white debris, the captain squinted upward. His trained military vision caught something unnatural falling through the chaos of the collapse. It wasn’t ice, nor was it granite.

It was the shape of a human body, plummeting straight toward the sharp boulders of the riverbed at terrifying, lethal speed.

In any normal circumstance, a person falling from that height was already dead. Out in the wasteland, saving a stranger meant risking precious energy and drawing nearby cold-adapted infected packs straight to their location.

It was a statistical impossibility for a survivor to fall at that exact second, directly above the path of one of the exceedingly rare gravity-type power users in the region.

It was pure, absurd, legendary luck.

The captain’s instincts kicked in before his mind could even weigh the risks. He stepped straight out from beneath the rock overhang, anchoring his stance deep in the snowdrifts. His hazel eyes flared with a sudden, brilliant golden luminescence that radiated through the dim light of the canyon floor.

He thrust both palms straight up toward the sky.

”Gravity Field: Inversion!” he growled through gritted teeth.

The atmosphere twenty feet above his head instantly warped into a shimmering, invisible, elastic net. Thirty feet above the lethal rocks, Lin Qing’s plunging body slammed directly into the localized gravity field.

The terrifying downward momentum was violently arrested in a fraction of a second. The crushing force of gravity around her inverted, absorbing the impact as if she had fallen into a thick cushion of dense fluid. She hovered suspended mid-air for a brief second before the captain slowly lowered his trembling hands, the severe strain causing blood to trickle faintly from his right nostril. He released the field, settling her limp body softly into a deep powder snowdrift at his feet.

The scavengers rushed out from the rock shelter, weapons raised in high alert as they surrounded the fallen woman.

”Captain! Are you alright?!” one of them gasped, seeing the captain drop to one knee, breathing heavily from the massive energy drain. ”Why did you jump in? That almost cleared out your energy reserve!”

”I saw a person,” the captain rasped, wiping his nose and catching his breath as he knelt beside the unconscious woman. He gently brushed back the snow-dusted strands of hair from her pale face, revealing the deep, bleeding laceration along her left temple.

His eyes swept down her body, taking in her sleek, high-grade tactical vest, reinforced combat trousers, and modular leg holster housing a pristine military sidearm. Attached to her collar was a clip forged from alloy.

”She’s an elite operative,” the captain murmured in quiet recognition, his voice heavy with respect. ”Military grade.”

”An operative?” the scavenger whispered nervously, looking up at the ridge. ”If her squad is up there, they might think we brought her down!”

The captain inspected the crushed shoulder rig where her radio had been mounted. ”Her radio is completely destroyed,” he said, pressing two fingers to her neck to check her pulse.

His fingers found a strong, steady, rhythmic beat beneath her cool skin. ”No signal can get out of this ravine, and no signal can reach her. And with that ice collapse, every cold-adapted pack within three miles is heading toward this basin right now.”

Seeing a fellow soldier touched a deep, unhealed scar within him—a bitter reminder of the squad he had failed to save. The captain slid his arms beneath her back and knees, lifting her light frame into his arms with ease.

”Pack the gear and move out immediately,” he commanded sharply. ”We have a grueling two-hour march back to the secondary depot through the storm. Move fast!”

Two hours later, deep inside the mountain ridge...

The blizzard raged violently outside, burying the mountain pass under three feet of impenetrable white, but deep within the reinforced concrete structure of the secondary military depot, the air was warm, dry, and smelled of burning pine.

Built completely underground into the mountain core, this hidden facility served as a safe haven for the small survivor community. Women were tending to small fires, and young children sat quietly near humming iron heaters.

The captain pushed open the heavy steel doors of the medical bay, carrying Lin Qing inside and laying her carefully onto a clean cot. An older woman with sharp, experienced hands—the community’s sole field medic—immediately rushed over with a tray of hot water, clean gauze, and medical disinfectant.

”Where did you find her, Captain?” the medic asked, her eyes widening as she noticed the high-quality tactical vest and weapons resting on the nearby wooden table.

”She fell from the high ridge during a thaw collapse,” the captain replied, standing with arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on Lin Qing’s still face. ”I caught her with gravity inversion before she hit the rocks. How is her injury?”

The medic carefully wiped away the dried blood from Lin Qing’s temple, inspecting the swollen laceration with gentle fingers. ”The bleeding has stopped, and there’s no skull fracture I can feel,” she reported, binding her head neatly with fresh linen bandages. She glanced over at the shattered metal and fried wires of the comms unit on the table.

”Her head took a severe blow, Captain,” the medic said softly, shaking her head with concern. ”Her radio took the worst of the impact, but the concussive force still rattled her brain. Without advanced neurological scanners or medical equipment, there’s no way to know how deep the internal trauma goes. She could wake up in an hour... or she could remain in a deep coma for days.”

The captain stepped closer to the cot. Even pale, bruised, and completely unconscious, Lin Qing possessed an aura of sharp, lethal authority that could not be disguised. Her breathing remained calm and rhythmic despite her brain injury.

He picked up her heavy sidearm from the table, thumbed the side safety, and set it back down within her immediate reach. He looked at the crushed metal of her comms device, knowing that somewhere out in that frozen white hell, a base was likely tearing itself apart trying to find her.

”Who are you?” the captain murmured quietly to the dim room, his hazel eyes lingering on her pale face as the oil lamp flickered against the cold stone walls. ”And how long until your people come looking for you?”

Lin Qing lay motionless on the cot, completely silent, buried deep in the dark void of her unconscious mind.
