Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The heavy, acrid cloud of gunsmoke and pulverized concrete slowly settled over the unsealed entry hall of the secondary depot.

The dying echoes of gunfire dissolved into the low, steady hum of the depot’s secondary air filtration system. Across the threshold, the entrance to the auxiliary ventilation shaft was littered with the dark, motionless hulls of the subterranean burrowers, their thick shells cracked and oozing thick, dark fluid onto the damp floor.

Without needing an order, Lieutenant Chen and Xiao Li immediately stepped forward alongside Guo Jiong’s perimeter guards to secure the breach. Xiao Li utilized his remaining strength to pull two heavy steel storage crates into the mouth of the side shaft, wedging them firmly against the cracked masonry to create a temporary bottleneck. Lieutenant Chen worked quickly beside him, applying a low-level thermal weld across the iron seam to fuse the barricade directly into the granite frame.

The room returned to a fragile, heavy quiet.

As the immediate adrenaline of the firefight faded, Lin Qing stood near the edge of the central monitoring array, her breathing calm and measured. She reached up with a slight, methodical motion to pull her thick fleece blanket tighter around her neck against the subterranean draft. As her fingers adjusted the collar, her dark hair shifted back past her shoulder.

The movement exposed the right side of her head.

Wrapped tightly around her hairline and extending down behind her ear was a thick, clean layer of white medical bandages. Near the temple, a faint, dark crimson spot of fresh blood had seeped through the gauze, pulled to the surface by the sharp, intense physical exertion of the recent battle.

Han Zheng, who had not taken his eyes off her for a single second since the battle ended, caught the flash of white and crimson instantly.

The stoic, unshakeable mask that Commander Han Zheng wore in battle cracked. His dark eyes narrowed, fixing entirely on the blood-stained bandage.

The tight, controlled posture he maintained softened into a quiet, painful tension. He had known she was likely injured but seeing the physical evidence of her head trauma right before his eyes struck him with a heavy, suffocating weight.

Lieutenant Chen finished securing the thermal latch on the temporary barricade and turned back toward Guo Jiong and Song Yan. He wiped a streak of grime from his cheek, his dark eyes brimming with a mixture of profound relief and genuine respect.

Stepping forward, Lieutenant Chen gave a formal, disciplined salute toward Guo Jiong and Song Yan before lowering his hand to offer a firm handshakes.

”On behalf of Commander Han and our entire unit, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to you, Guo jiang, and to your team,” Lieutenant Chen said, his voice deep, sincere, and steady. ”You sheltered, protected our Sister-in-Law when she was vulnerable in these mountains. That is a debt our unit will not forget.”

Hearing the title—Sister-in-Law—spoken so naturally and without a trace of hesitation by Lieutenant Chen, Lin Qing’s posture did not falter. She did not flinch, blush, or offer an awkward correction.

Instead, her sharp, dark eyes narrowed slightly as she absorbed the word, quietly logging it into her mental blueprint.

’Sister-in-Law.’ The term implied a specific, highly personal bond—not merely a fellow soldier or a subordinate officer, but someone tied directly to the commander standing in front of her.

She evaluated the information with the clinical distance of an intelligence officer processing an external field report. She noted the reverence in Lieutenant Chen’s tone, the fierce, protective aura of the giant warrior Xiao Li, and the quiet, agonizing intensity radiating from Han Zheng himself.

Every piece of evidence matched. They knew her. They trusted her. They fought alongside her with a level of instinctual synergy that could only be forged over moments of shared life and death.

Yet, despite the undeniable reality of their presence, Lin Qing maintained her guarded stance.

Her mind remained an absolute vault. She had woken up in the cold gloom of the military depot with no name, no memory of her origins, and no recollection of the world before her rescue. More importantly, she still had no answer to the most critical question of all: ’How had she fallen off that cliff?’

Until she knew whether her fall was an accident, an ambush, or a betrayal, she could not afford to lower her mental defenses completely—not even around a man whose presence filled her with an inexplicable, instinctual sense of absolute safety.

Song Yan looked between Lieutenant Chen and Han Zheng, noticing the commander’s unblinking, heavy gaze locked on the bandage along Lin Qing’s temple.

Song Yan stepped closer to Han Zheng, keeping his voice low so as not to sound intrusive. ”Commander... you should know her condition before you speak with her.”

Han Zheng did not break his stare, but his silence invited Song Yan to continue.

”When I caught her at the base of the southern ridge, she was unconscious,” Song Yan explained quietly, his tone respectful and somber. ”She had suffered severe head trauma from the drop. It was a brutal impact to the right side of her skull. We brought her back and treated her wound as best as we could with our limited medical supplies.”

Song Yan paused, glancing back at Lin Qing, who was calmly checking the chamber clearance on her sidearm.

”Her body didn’t sustain any major injuries but when she finally regained consciousness... her past was completely gone. She remembered how to handle a firearm, how to evaluate structural choke points, and how to fight—but she didn’t know her own name.” Song Yan continued.

Behind Han Zheng, Xiao Li, Old Wang, Lieutenant Chen and Sun Hao stood in quiet, painful shock.

Old Wang tightened his grip on his heavy sniper rifle, looking away toward the cold concrete floor as a grim expression settled over his weathered face. Xiao Li lowered his massive head, his jaw clenching tightly. The realization hit the squad like a physical blow: the sharp, brilliant, and unyielding woman they considered their second-in-command who had led them through operations looked at them now with the calm, analytical eyes of a stranger.

Han Zheng listened to every word, his breathing slow and measured. The pain in his chest burned like cold iron, but he did not allow any outward sign of grief to break his discipline.

He understood her posture completely. He knew how her mind worked better than anyone in the world. If she was guarded, it was because her instincts were protecting her while her memory was absent. She was being smart. She was surviving.

Han Zheng took a slow step forward, closing the remaining distance between them until he stood directly in front of her.

Lin Qing looked up, her dark eyes meeting his. Up close, she could see the faint lines of exhaustion around his eyes, the light dusting of grey stone powder on his trench coat, and the sheer, unyielding willpower holding his posture straight. Standing this close to him, the strange, phantom warmth in her chest grew stronger, pressing against her ribcage like a forgotten heartbeat.

”Your injury is bleeding,” Han Zheng said softly. His voice was deep, steady, and remarkably gentle—a striking contrast to the cold, authoritative command he had used moments ago.

Lin Qing reached up, her fingers lightly brushing the edge of the white bandage near her temple. She felt the dampness of the fresh blood where the exertion from recoil and rapid movement had reopened the surface scan.

”It is minor,” Lin Qing replied, her voice smooth, level, and analytical. ”The movement pulled the stitch seam. It does not impair my motor functions or my reaction time.”

”It doesn’t matter if it impairs your motor functions,” Han Zheng said, his tone leaving no room for argument, yet carried with a quiet, undeniable warmth. ”You’ve fought enough for today. The entry seam is secured, and my squad will take over the primary perimeter guard.”

He turned slightly toward Guo Jiong. ”Guo Jiong, request permission to use your medical room so she can have her bandage replaced.”

”Of course, Commander,” Guo Jiong answered immediately. ”Song Yan, show them to the medical ward. We have clean gauze and antiseptic stored there.”

Lin Qing looked at Han Zheng, observing the absolute certainty in his eyes. She knew she could refuse—she was in a safe position within the depot, surrounded by guards who had sheltered her. Yet, every instinct in her body told her that this man would burn the mountain to the ground before he ever let harm come to her.

”Very well,” Lin Qing said quietly, engaging the safety on her sidearm and holstering it smoothly within her jacket lining. ”I will dress the wound.”

Han Zheng gestured for her to lead the way alongside Song Yan. As she turned toward the inner corridor, Han Zheng fell into step half a pace behind her, his eyes scanning the surrounding shadows to shield her from every angle—exactly as he had done through battles, and exactly as he would continue to do, whether she remembered his name or not.
