Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The abrupt silence left by the severed transmission echoed louder than the static. Inside the dim, amber-lit confines of her new room, Lin Qing stood frozen, the earpiece still clutched tightly in her hand.

The careful, silent boundaries she had meticulously constructed over the last forty-eight hours evaporated in a single second. The hollow ache that had occupied her chest was instantly replaced by a sharp, spike of adrenaline.

She didn’t hesitate. Pulling her heavy winter coat over her shoulders, Lin Qing threw open her door and ran down the dark corridor. Her boots clicked sharply against the floorboards as she navigated the intersecting turns of the suite.

She reached Han Zheng’s room at the end of the hall and knocked firmly, her breath coming in short, tense bursts. The door slid open almost instantly. Han Zheng stood in the threshold, completely awake and fully alert, having already sensed the frantic energy of her approach through the baseline vibrations of the facility.

He wore a dark shirt, his dark eyes instantly locking onto the pale tension in her face. The distance they had maintained for two days vanished, replaced by an immediate, silent understanding that the fragile peace had shattered.

”Lin Tao just broadcasted on the encrypted mercenary channel,” Lin Qing said, her voice tight but precise. ”He’s moving his remaining forces. He was panicked for the last forty-eight hours, dealing with starvation and zombie breaches, but less than five minutes ago, his entire demeanor changed. He claims he found a ticket to force his way inside this bunker.”

Han Zheng’s expression hardened and they both quickly rushed to the command hub.

Once inside, Han Zheng’s fingers flew across the interface to wake the long-range radar metrics. ”Sun Hao, report to the command deck,” he commanded into the localized comms unit. Within minutes, a sleepy but alert Sun Hao rushed into the room, buckling his utility belt.

”Look at the southern ridge trail,” Lin Qing indicated, pointing to a flashing cluster of faint thermal signatures on the secondary monitor.

Through the pixelated feed of the outdoor long-range cameras, the blinding sheets of the snowstorm made visibility nearly impossible.

Yet, the distinct, dual glare of heavy halogen headlights cut through the whiteout. Lin Tao’s remaining armored transport trucks—a ragged, desperate convoy of three vehicles—had officially mobilized. They had left the safety of their ruined base camp and were crawling up the lower mountain trails, heading directly into the sanctuary’s automated firing lines.

”It doesn’t make sense,” Sun Hao muttered, leaning over the console as he adjusted the defensive grid metrics. ”They are entirely out of high-tier munitions, their grunts are freezing, and they don’t possess a single explosive charge heavy enough to scratch our outer blast gates. Marching up this ridge is a suicide run. What could he possibly have found?”

Han Zheng stared at the advancing thermal dots, his jaw clenched tightly. ”He wouldn’t risk his remaining men unless he was absolutely certain he had a card to play. We wait until they hit the perimeter threshold.”

Three hours prior, at the crumbling mercenary base camp at the foot of the mountain, the reality had been vastly different.

Lin Tao had been pacing the length of his freezing office, his breath pluming in the air. The mutiny against Gao Feng had left him with a crown of thorns. He was at his wits’ end. Over the last twelve hours, he had been forced to execute two grunts for trying to steal from the final, moldy reserve of grain bags.

To make matters worse, a localized breach in the lower Eastern fence had allowed a handful of low-level, frostbitten zombies to slip through, costing them a dozen rounds of precious ammunition to clear.

Frustrated and suffocating under the pressure of a collapsing command, Lin Tao slammed his fist against his metal desk, threw open his heavy door, and stormed out into the freezing courtyard to take his anger out on the workers.

The wind howled through the ruined courtyard, kicking up sheets of jagged ice. Lin Tao screamed at the men clearing the debris, his voice hoarse. As he turned to stomp back inside, his eyes locked onto a thin, tall teenager working near the rear tire of an armored truck.

The boy was skinny as a rail, his oversized winter coat hanging loosely off his narrow shoulders. His hands, raw and purple from the biting frost, were clumsily chipping thick layers of ice off the heavy vehicle treads with a rusted iron crowbar. His face was smeared with dark coal soot, his nose bright red from the wind.

Lin Tao paused, his narrow eyes tracking the boy’s movements. There was something about the sharp angle of the kid’s jawline, the distinct, stubborn set of his brow, that triggered a sudden, buried memory in the back of Lin Tao’s mind. It was a facial structure he had seen before, but it belonged to someone sturdier, someone who didn’t belong in the low level work unit.

Lin Tao marched across the snowy courtyard, his heavy boots kicking up powder until he stood directly over the trembling teenager.

”You,” Lin Tao barked, his voice cutting through the wind. ”Drop the bar. Look at me.”

The teenager flinched violently, dropping the heavy iron tool into the snow with a dull thud. He slowly raised his head, his wide, dark eyes filled with absolute terror as he stared up at the volatile new leader of the camp.

Lin Tao leaned in close, his mind racing as the puzzle pieces suddenly snapped into place. The memory crystallized with terrifying clarity. Back before the global temperature plummeted, before the world completely died, Lin Tao had attended the wedding of Han Zheng and Lin Qing.

It had been a massive operational affair, and in the background, carrying heavy luggage, setting up security barriers, was Ah Hua.

And this kid looked exactly like a miniature, starved version of him.

Lin Tao reached out, his heavy gloved hand clamping tightly onto the boy’s collar, dragging him forward until their faces were inches apart. ”What’s your name, brat? Speak clearly if you want to keep your tongue.”

”Ah... Ah Ming,” the teenager stammered, his teeth chattering uncontrollably from a mixture of cold and sheer panic. ”My surname is Ah. Please, Captain, I didn’t steal any rations, I was just clearing the treads—”

Lin Tao let out a sudden, sharp breath, his grip tightening. ”Who is your brother? Where did he go after the apocalypse started?”

Ah Ming blinked, tears of fear freezing against his eyelashes. ”I... I don’t know! I swear I don’t know! I haven’t seen him at all. He left for a mission before the apocalypse even started, I haven’t seen him after that.”

Because Ah Ming was classified as a low-level labor grunt, a non-combatant body used purely for manual chores, Gao Feng’s intelligence officers had never bothered to cross-reference his lineage.

The kid had been completely lost in the massive, shifting bureaucracy of the mercenary camp’s system. He had spent his time chipping ice and hauling waste, entirely oblivious to the fact that his older brother, Ah Hua, was not only alive, but living inside the very high-tech fortress his camp was desperately trying to conquer.

Lin Tao stared at the trembling boy for three silent seconds. Then, slowly, the suffocating pressure in his chest cracked, and he broke into a loud, manic, and entirely unhinged laugh. The sound echoed wildly against the concrete walls of the courtyard, causing the nearby men to exchange uneasy glances.

He didn’t need heavy artillery. He didn’t need bunker-busting missiles or encrypted mainframe bypass keys to open the research center’s doors. He just needed a single, fragile human shield—an emotional bomb that would tear the sanctuary’s internal loyalty apart from the inside out.

”Get this boy inside the lead transport truck,” Lin Tao ordered his inner circle, his eyes gleaming with a volatile, dangerous spark. ”Warm him up just enough so he can stand. We finally have our ticket.”

Back in the present, inside the high-tech command tower of the research center, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The three thermal signatures on the monitor had officially crossed the final security threshold, entering the narrow, snow-choked valley that led directly to the primary entrance blast gates.

”They’re in range of the automated heavy turrets,” Sun Hao reported, his hand hovering over the defensive engagement switch.

”Commander, give the word. We can tear those trucks into scrap metal before they even reach the outer courtyard.”

”Hold,” Han Zheng commanded, his eyes tracking the lead vehicle. ”They’ve stopped.”

On the main monitor, the lead armored transport ground to a halt just outside the sanctuary’s perimeter fence, safe from the automated close-range defenses but entirely visible on the high-definition outdoor security feed. The blinding snow obscured the scene for a moment, but then the truck’s heavy steel door slammed open.

Lin Tao stepped out into the freezing wind, completely devoid of his previous panic. He marched confidently through the snow straight toward one of the bunker’s low-mounted external security cameras. He stopped just a few feet away, glaring directly into the lens so his face filled the screens inside the command deck.

He raised a heavy, modified megaphone to his mouth, his voice booming through the valley and echoing faintly through the bunker’s external audio sensors.

”Han Zheng! Lin Qing! I know you’re watching me on these little screens!” Lin Tao shouted, a twisted, arrogant smirk splitting his frostbitten face. ”Go ahead and activate your turrets! Blow my trucks to hell! But before you press that button, why don’t you take a real close look at what I strapped to the front bumper of my lead truck?”

Lin Tao pointed a heavy gloved hand back toward the vehicle. He stepped aside, intentionally adjusting his angle so the security camera could zoom past him, locking onto the front engine block.

Strapped tightly to the exterior metal grate of the truck’s front bumper was a person.

The camera zoomed in. It was a teenager, his thin frame shivering violently against the freezing wind, his face pale and caked in frost. A heavy, loaded rifle was rigged to a mechanical tripod inside the truck cabin, its barrel pointed directly through the windshield at the back of the boy’s head.

Lin Tao’s arrogant, unhinged voice boomed loudly through the microphone, cutting through the audio speakers of the command deck with static-heavy spite.

”Han Zheng! Lin Qing!” Lin Tao shouted into the mic, completely devoid of his previous panic. ”I know you can hear me! I know your automated turrets are locked onto my trucks! Go ahead and fire! Turn us into ash! But the second your sensors trip, this mechanical trigger releases, and your loyal dog Ah Hua loses the only family he has left in this world!”
