Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The residential suites of the research center were enveloped in absolute, heavy silence during the deepest hours of the night cycle.

Most of the personnel had retired to their rooms, leaving the narrow corridors empty save for the steady hum of air filtration units working overtime against the chill outside.

High above the floor, concealed entirely within the pitch-black shadows cast by the industrial ceiling ventilation ducts, Han Ye moved like an ethereal phantom.

Having more control over his powers now, he utilised his Shadow Manipulation, his small frame dissolved seamlessly into the darkness, flowing through the metal grating and slipping under the narrow gap of Yang Jun’s locked door without making the slightest sound.

Inside, the room was cold, quiet, and meticulously organized—a direct reflection of a sniper’s strict, uncompromising discipline. Every item had its designated place, from the neatly rolled spare uniforms to the spotless rifle cleaning kit laid out on the small desk.

Han Ye emerged silently from the shadow beneath the frame of the bed. His dark eyes swept cold and calculating across the room, ignoring the obvious storage areas and focusing instead on the subtle structural flaws in the cabin’s flooring. He dropped low to the ground, trailing tiny shadow tendrils across the loose floorboards positioned beneath the mattress.

Working with practiced efficiency, the small regressor carefully pried up a slightly warped wooden board hidden deep within the bedframe’s insulation gap. Tucked into the dark space below was a small leather-bound personal diary, its edges frayed from frequent handling.

Han Ye flipped through the pages, using the faint ambient glow of the corridor light streaming beneath the door frame.

There were no explicit plans of sabotage written across the pages, no written confessions of treason, and no direct mention of Lin Qing whatsoever.

Instead, the entries contained raw, deeply disturbing fragments of Yang Jun’s personal past—bitter thoughts about the breakdown of human society, dark musings regarding the tragic death of his younger sister and a quiet, simmering resentment toward those who had survived while she perished.

’He kept his tracks remarkably clean,’ Han Ye analyzed silently, closing the small book without leaving a single fingerprint. ’There is no explicit smoking gun here to prove he sabotaged anything, but this diary proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that his mind is fractured, unstable, and deeply bitter.’

Han Ye slipped the small diary carefully inside the inner lining of his heavy fleece jacket and melted back into the surrounding darkness. Slipping silently down the main residential shaft, he glided toward Han Zheng’s private room. He placed the diary discreetly beneath a heavy stack of reports resting on Han Zheng’s wooden desk before melting back into the ventilation network above.

At that exact moment, Han Zheng was nowhere near his room. He remained locked inside the primary command deck, staring intently at the glowing monitors alongside his soldiers Dr Zhou.

Up on the glass display console, high-altitude satellite topographies of the southern mountain range were rendering in sharp, detailed thermal contrast. The digital map flickered as the satellite signal struggled through the residual atmospheric interference left behind by the recent blizzard.

Lieutenant Chen stood directly beside Han Zheng, using the touch interface to zoom in on a massive, jagged ridge located two miles south of their current coordinates.

”The storm cleared just long enough for the satellite uplink to pull a localized heat scan of the southern pass,” Lieutenant Chen reported, pointing to four faint, fluctuating thermal distortions buried beneath deep layers of sheet ice and fallen rock. ”The structural cores of these facilities are far too heavily shielded by natural granite and heavy reinforced snow to show internal schematic details, but the environmental sensors confirm structural hollows big enough to shelter human life and maintain stable ambient heat.”

Han Zheng folded his arms over his broad chest, his expression cold, unreadable, and methodical as he analyzed the four highlighted coordinates glowing on the glass screen:

1. Sector 7-A: An abandoned mining hub with deep subterranean ventilation shafts.

2. Sector 9-C: A high-altitude weather research station built into the cliffside.

3. Sector 12-B: A collapsed highway tunnel complex previously used for military transport.

4. Sector 15-D: An undisclosed underground military supply depot built during the late-stage border defense initiative.

”We can’t risk driving heavy armored combat vehicles up those narrow, frozen passes without knowing for certain which sector holds her,” Lieutenant Chen noted grimly, tapping the terrain elevation metrics. ”A single wrong turn will waste vital fuel reserves, trigger potential snowslides, and alert any hostile surface factions operating in the sector.”

”We don’t drive heavy,” Han Zheng commanded, his deep voice filled with absolute, unyielding resolve that left no room for debate. ”We prepare four lightweight, high-mobility reconnaissance teams. We will sweep these four sites systematically until we locate her.”

Two miles to the south, deep beneath the mountain core...

The air in the military depot was cold and dry, carrying a faint scent of recycled oxygen and damp earth, but the dull, throbbing ache behind Lin Qing’s temples had finally subsided to a manageable level.

Standing up slowly from the cot, she stretched her sore, stiff muscles, systematically checking her balance, posture, and reaction time. Seeing that her footing was steady and her head was clear, she decided she had spent more than enough time cooped up inside the dim, medical bay.

Song Yan stepped out into the hallway with her, walking a half-step behind to give her space while keeping a careful, non-intrusive eye on her physical recovery.

As they walked down the central residential passageway, Lin Qing observed the depot with a practical, highly evaluating eye. It was far from a high-tech fortress; the surrounding walls were rough-cut granite and aging reinforced concrete, the electrical wiring was exposed along the piping, and the food rations were clearly being managed down to the exact gram. Yet, despite the obvious scarcity, everything was fully functional, organized, and remarkably well-maintained given their severely limited surface resources.

Heavy metal doors along the corridor stood slightly ajar to let the central air duct heat circulate into the living spaces. As they passed by, civilian survivors looked up from their daily tasks—repairing clothing, cleaning air filters, or organizing dry goods. Curious children peeked out from behind their mothers’ sleeves, their wide, innocent eyes following the unfamiliar, sharp-looking woman walking alongside their leader.

There was soft whispering among the adults, but no visible underlying hostility—only quiet, natural curiosity toward the newcomer Song Yan had bought in.

Lin Qing didn’t smile or attempt to make small talk, her naturally cold disposition keeping her guarded against strangers. However, as she watched a small group of young children playing safely with some carved wooden toys near a warm heat vent, a subtle sense of calm settled deep in her chest.

”Your perimeter guards at the lower junction are standing too close to the doorway shadows,” Lin Qing noted quietly, her voice sharp and observant as she glanced toward a nearby security post where two guards stood leaning against the wall. ”If someone comes around that blind corner with a silenced weapon or high-velocity sidearm, your men won’t have time to raise an alarm or draw their weapons.”

Song Yan paused in his tracks, looking over at the guard post she indicated, assessing the angle she had pointed out. He chuckled softly with genuine appreciation, rubbing the back of his neck. ”I’ll have the shift captain adjust their defensive positions immediately. Good eye.”

He looked at her, his hazel eyes thoughtful and respectful. ”You don’t say much, but you notice everything.”

Lin Qing looked down the long, dimly lit stone corridor, feeling the sheer, suffocating weight of the frozen mountain resting above them.

”In a place like this, noticing things keeps people alive,” Lin Qing replied plainly, her tone sharp and detached. ”You’ve done a good job keeping these people safe, Song Yan. But whoever I am... I know my answers aren’t down in this hallway.”

As they reached the edge of the residential intersection, where the main hallway branched off toward the water filtration unit, Lin Qing’s sharp senses picked up a tiny, sudden shift in movement to her left. She stopped in her tracks, her eyes cutting sideways toward a heavy concrete support pillar.

Hidden halfway behind the stone pillar was a little girl, no older than seven or eight, wearing an oversized, hand-knitted woolen sweater that draped past her knees. She was peering out with wide, round eyes, staring intently at Lin Qing’s face.

Unlike the other children in the depot who looked on with simple, cautious curiosity, a strange, undeniable flicker of sudden recognition sparked across the little girl’s eyes—a faint, startled widening of her pupils, as if she recognized the woman standing before her.

Lin Qing locked eyes with her, a sudden, familiar prickle of instinct rising at the base of her neck. A phantom feeling brushed against her mind—a sensation that she had seen a face like this before.

Before Lin Qing could take a step forward or ask a question, the little girl gasped softly, spun on her heel, and scampered away down the side passageway. Her small boots pattered softly against the stone floor until the sound faded completely and she vanished around the far corner.

Lin Qing stared down the empty corridor, her hand resting near her hip out of pure muscle memory as her brow furrowed in quiet, intense thought.

”Something wrong?” Song Yan asked, noticing her abrupt pause and the sharp intensity in her stance.

”No,” Lin Qing answered quietly, pulling her gaze back with an unreadable expression as she resumed walking. ”Just... a feeling.”
