Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Outside in the swirling whiteout, the yard erupted into a chaotic, blinding arena of violence. The shattered glass of the lead truck’s cabin had barely hit the hard, snow-crusted ice before three more mercenaries scrambled out of the secondary transport vehicles parked just behind it.

Their assault rifles were already raised, their muzzle flashes slicing through the heavy sheets of descending frost. Han Zheng was instantly swarmed. Even with his abilities, fighting multiple armed combatants at point-blank range in the middle of a suffocating fifty-knot blizzard was a brutal, muscle-straining affair.

He didn’t hesitate. He tracked the trajectory of an incoming rifle butt swinging toward his temple. Ducking smoothly beneath the blow with augmented velocity, he stepped into the attacker’s blind spot and slammed his open palm directly into the man’s chest.

He released a concentrated burst of raw, compressed kinetic energy. The sheer force of the shockwave blasted the mercenary backward through the air, sending him crashing into the side of a transport truck like a ragdoll before he slumped motionless into a snowdrift.

But as Han Zheng spun to face the remaining threats, two more men lunged at him from the rear shadow of the truck cabin, throwing their full body weight against him. They pinned his arms and forced him into a raw, grinding struggle against the freezing metal framework of the vehicle.

Inside the high-tech sanctuary command tower, Lin Qing watched the monitor screen with absolute, unblinking precision. The static-heavy security feed flickered, showing the dark silhouettes locked in combat. She did not panic. Her fingers pressed the direct line to the primary loading bay, her voice carrying the cold, unyielding authority of a seasoned commander who knew exactly how to exploit an opening. The soilders had already reached the loading bay under her command.

”Lieutenant Chen, the primary trigger guard inside the cabin is down, but Han Zheng is heavily engaged with multiple hostiles in the central courtyard,” Lin Qing commanded sharply over the encrypted channel. ”Open the gates and deploy the forces immediately. Clear the field, suppress the secondary vehicles, and secure the hostage before he freezes.”

”Copy that, Sister-in-law,” Lieutenant Chen’s voice crackled back over the comms, entirely steady and devoid of hesitation. He turned his head toward Dr. Zhou, who was stationed directly at the manual gate overrides beside the massive steel doors of the loading bay. ”Doctor, crack the primary doors. Just enough for a tight tactical column to pass through. Close them the absolute second we clear the threshold.”

Dr. Zhou nodded grimly, her fingers flying over the heavy mechanical bypass keys to unlock the primary safety overrides. With a deep, groaning complain of industrial metal, the multi-ton titanium blast doors parted. A thick, vertical slit opened directly into the raging whiteout of the mountain valley. The pressurized air of the bunker rushed out into the storm, and a freezing wave of sub-zero wind howled into the concrete chamber like a physical entity.

Lieutenant Chen moved first, his thermal and fire manipulation powers flaring into existence instantly. A brilliant, superheated orange glow washed over the barrel of his tactical rifle as he stepped through the gap. He ignited his specialized ammunition upon firing, sending a continuous, devastating volley of high-heat tracer rounds tearing through the blizzard. The incendiary bullets illuminated the whiteout, melting through the falling snow and forcing the mercenary line to dive for cover behind their armored chassis.

Right beside him, Xiao Li stepped out into the open courtyard. His earth-hardening power activated seamlessly, the skin of his arms and the surface of his shield instantly coating over with a rock-hard, dark molecular layer of dense minerals. He slammed the edge of the shield deep into the ice, acting as the team’s ultimate front-line tank. A panicked spray of high-caliber bullets from Lin Tao’s men struck the shield, sparking harmlessly off the hardened mineral layer without leaving so much as a scratch.

From the rear shadow of the open bay door, Old Wang raised his heavy sniper rifle. His eyes had spent decades reading the subtle movements of the wilderness; he didn’t need a scanning grid to track the shifting thermal silhouettes through the storm. With absolute calmness, he adjusted for the crosswind and squeezed the trigger. Each high-velocity round picked off the mercenary grunts attempting to flank Han Zheng’s position, dropping them into the powder before they could pull their triggers.

Da Yong pushed past the defensive line next, his heavy assault armor absorbing the biting frost as he operated his modified heavy machine gun. He laid down a devastating, continuous wall of suppression fire that kept the secondary transport vehicles pinned in place.

As the elite team roared out into the snow, Sun Hao stepped forward to monitor the door seal and maintain the communications array. But as his eyes swept the dark, recessed corners near the base of the heavy blast doors, he suddenly froze.

Near the rubber gaskets of the titanium gate, curled into a small, completely unmoving ball on the freezing concrete floorboards, was Han Ye. The young boy’s face was deathly pale, his skin drenched in a thick, unnatural layer of cold sweat. His breathing was incredibly faint and shallow, his small chest barely rising against the chill of the room.

”Han Ye!” Sun Hao shouted, his duties instantly forgotten as his heart dropped into his stomach.

He rushed forward, abandoning the console and dropping heavily to his knees on the cold concrete. He swept the small, exhausted child up into his arms. The boy was completely limp, his head lolling back against Sun Hao’s shoulder, his small body shivering slightly from the physical toll of his hidden overexertion. Sun Hao could feel the unnatural chill radiating from the boy’s skin, entirely unaware that the kid’s core had just single-handedly locked the enemy’s trigger mechanism outside.

Sun Hao frantically pressed his comms wire, his voice rising in panic. ”Lin Qing! I’ve got a major medical emergency inside the primary loading bay! It’s Han Ye—he’s completely unconscious, pale as a ghost, and totally unresponsive. I don’t know how he got down here past the security locks, but he’s freezing to the touch. I’m pulling back from the door controls immediately to examine him!”

”Go!” Lin Qing’s voice cracked through the wire. For the first time since the crisis began, a rare, volatile spike of protective urgency broke through her calm demeanor. ”Take him to the private medical room in the residential suite right now. Dr. Zhou, secure the seal and assist him!”

”Understood!” Dr. Zhou shouted. She slammed the manual hydraulic lever down the absolute second the last soldier’s boot cleared the outer frame. The heavy gates crashed shut with a deafening, echoing thud, sealing out the storm and locking the sanctuary down tight.

She immediately turned away from the glass panel, her professional instincts taking over as she ran toward Sun Hao. ”We need to get his core temperature up immediately.”

Sun Hao held the small boy tightly against his chest, shielding him from the residual drafts as he rushed down the long corridor toward the safety of the residential suite. He didn’t care about the battle raging outside the walls anymore; his entire world had narrowed down to the fragile, pale child in his arms, entirely oblivious to the fact that the regressor had just saved the entire base from internal ruin.

Out in the frozen courtyard, the tide of the battle had completely turned into a slaughter.

With Xiao Li’s impenetrable stone armor absorbing the bulk of the enemy’s ammunition and Lieutenant Chen’s high-heat rounds melting through the mercenaries’ improvised metal cover, Lin Tao’s forces were completely falling apart. The mercenary grunts were trapped in an open valley against an elite, coordinated unit.

Han Zheng, sensing the arrival of his team’s suppression fire, braced his weight against the truck. He unleashed a massive, localized kinetic blast radius around his own body. The raw, invisible force shattered the thick ice beneath his boots and threw the two mercenaries pinning him violently off his shoulders, sending them flying into the snowdrifts where they lay groaning, their weapons scattered.

”Ah Hua! Move in! Now!” Han Zheng roared through the comms, his voice cutting through the fading sound of gunfire.

Ah Hua didn’t need to be told twice. Driven by a raw, primal surge of adrenaline, his passive advanced physical strength peaking to its absolute limit, the heavy weapons expert charged through the crossfire like a freight train. He didn’t care about the stray bullets clipping the edges of his armor or the freezing wind slicing across his exposed skin. His eyes were locked entirely, fiercely, on the front bumper of the lead transport truck.

He reached the vehicle in a desperate, sliding dive, throwing himself over the iron engine block.

Ah Ming was semi-conscious, his head lolling weakly to the side, his chest barely moving as his body entered the dangerous, stiffening stages of severe hypothermia. The boy’s eyes fluttered, unseeing, his lips completely blue.

”I’ve got you, little brother! I’ve got you! Ah Hua is here!” Ah Hua cried out, his voice thick with a raw, uncontrollable surge of emotion as he drew his heavy combat knife from his belt.

With frantic, powerful slashes, he hacked through the thick cargo ropes binding the teenager to the front grate. The reinforced threads—which had been unknowingly strengthened by the dying remnants of Han Ye’s shadow core—resisted the steel blade for a fraction of a second, feeling unnaturally dense, before finally snapping under the sheer force of Ah Hua’s desperate, panicked strength.

As the final binding gave way, the ropes uncoiled into the snow. Ah Hua caught his little brother’s limp, freezing frame before he could hit the ice, pulling the shivering teenager tightly against his massive chest.

He wrapped his arms around Ah Ming, shielding the boy’s fragile body with his own physical weight as he turned his back to the fading wind. Around them, the sanctuary’s elite team systematically neutralized the final remnants of Lin Tao’s desperate trap, ensuring the courtyard belonged entirely to the sanctuary.
