Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The piercing shrieks of the emergency alarm echoed off the walls, reverberating through the subterranean corridors like a physical blow. When the main power grid died, taking the warm hum of the facility with it, a collective wave of panicked gasps tore through the residential quarter.

In an instant, blood-red emergency strobes roared to life, casting long, jarring shadows that flashed violently across the pitch-black darkness.

”Stay down! Cover your heads!” a guard shouted farther down the passageway, his voice immediately swallowed by the growing, chaotic clamor of frightened civilians.

Guo Jiong didn’t hesitate for a single second. As the depot’s Security Leader, his training and deep-seated survival instincts surged past the initial wave of shock in his chest. He scooped up his daughter, sweeping her off her feet with effortless strength, and sprinted five paces toward a reinforced rock alcove where Auntie Mei was already ushering elderly survivors against the solid wall.

”Auntie Mei, take her!” Guo Jiong commanded over the blare of the siren, placing his trembling daughter securely into the older woman’s arms. He knelt briefly, looking straight into his daughter’s wide, tear-filled eyes. ”Stay right here with Auntie Mei. Do not step out into the hallway. Daddy has to go secure the line.”

”Daddy, be careful!” she cried out over the echoing noise, her hands clutching Auntie Mei’s thick coat.

Guo Jiong gave her shoulder a firm, reassuring squeeze, stood up, and pulled his heavy rifle over his shoulder. Turning back toward the main passage, he barked sharp, ringing orders at the four security guards under his command who were trying to keep the crowd back.

”Team One, form a wall at the junction to the living quarters!” Guo Jiong ordered, his voice booming over the siren. ”Keep the pathways clear—do not let a bottleneck form at the lower staircase! Move!”

While the guards scrambled to execute his orders, Lin Qing stood near the outer archway, unfazed by the sudden shift from quiet observation to total crisis.

Where others saw blinding red strobes and disorienting shadows, her mind filtered the surrounding chaos into pure, structured data. She observed the crowd’s panicked movement instantly: civilians were crowding toward the narrow primary exit, creating a high-risk crush point that could easily lead to trampling if someone fell.

Her body was still recoverning and lacked the raw strength for heavy physical labor, but her instincts and commanding presence remained entirely intact. Without waiting for permission or hesitation, Lin Qing stepped directly into the center of the corridor.

Her posture was straight and unyielding, her voice cutting through the ambient noise with a calm, absolute authority that commanded immediate obedience.

”Clear the main hallway!” she shouted, her voice low, resonant, and remarkably steady despite the screaming siren. ”Families with small children, fall back into the secondary alcoves along the left wall! Keep moving in single file toward the lower stone assembly point! Do not run—there is no fire or smoke in the corridor!”

Her sheer composure acted like a heavy iron anchor in the middle of a storm. The nearby survivors, caught in the grip of rising panic, instinctively responded to the commanding tone in her voice. They slowed their frantic pace, falling into orderly lines along the stone walls just as she directed.

A few yards away, Song Yan had already pulled his flashlight from his belt, illuminating the dusty air. He watched Lin Qing in quiet amazement as she smoothly redirected the flow of people with mere words and hand gestures, never once raising her arms in panic or straining herself physically.

She didn’t panic. She didn’t hesitate. Her muscle memory was completely automatic, guiding a civilian crowd away from a fatal bottleneck with the effortless precision of a seasoned commander who had handled severe mass evacuations a hundred times before.

Who is she really? Song Yan thought, his eyes fixed on her profile in the flashing crimson light. She commands people like she was born to lead armies.

”The air pressure differential is shifting,” Lin Qing said, turning her head toward Song Yan as soon as the corridor clear-out was underway and the bottleneck was relieved. ”Notice the subtle draft? It’s drawing freezing air inward from the primary intake, but the exhaust vents aren’t cycling properly. The main intake valve is probably blocked or jammed, trapping carbon dioxide inside the lower residential ring.”

Song Yan’s eyes narrowed instantly as he realized the danger. ”The outer air intake control room. Follow me!”

Deep in the northern perimeter of the subterranean depot, the temperature had dropped precipitously. White frost coated the concrete walls of the intake control chamber, and a heavy, mechanical grinding sound groaned from behind a sealed iron bulkhead.

Song Yan smashed his hand against the manual override panel, but the heavy iron door remained locked in place, jammed tight by a bent safety latch.

”The hydraulic release is stuck!” one of the depot engineers yelled, sweating despite the bitter, biting cold as he yanked uselessly on a manual lever with all his weight. ”The ice load from the surface mountain ridge must have collapsed into the intake cowl! It forced the intake shutter halfway shut and shorted out the primary power line!”

”Step back and let me look,” Lin Qing said, walking up to the control station. She refrained from grabbing the heavy levers herself, knowing her physical limits, but her eyes systematically mapped the mechanism.

She leaned in closer to the control housing, her dark eyes scanning the rusted mechanical linkage, the high-pressure gauges, and the heavy manual crank in less than three seconds. She didn’t need a technical manual or schematic. Her eyes traced the frozen hydraulic lines, instantly identifying the precise mechanical fault that had stalled the system.

”The shutter isn’t broken—it’s bound by thermal contraction and ice buildup on the secondary gear linkage,” she stated flatly, her voice cool, clinical, and completely confident. ”If you keep forcing that release lever blindly like that, you’re going to shear the safety pin and lock the valve open permanently.”

Just then, heavy footsteps thundered down the stone corridor.

Guo Jiong burst into the intake chamber, followed by three armed security guards. His face was covered in a light sheen of sweat, his eyes alert as he took in the scene. He had successfully secured the residential sector choke points and come straight to the source of the emergency.

”Song Yan! What’s the status here?” Guo Jiong called out, holding his rifle at the ready out of habit.

Before Song Yan could answer, Guo Jiong’s gaze locked onto the slender, composed woman standing calmly beside the intake control housing.

In the stark, bright beam of Song Yan’s flashlight and the pulsing red emergency light, Lin Qing turned her head slightly to address the newly arrived security detail.

”You three,” Lin Qing ordered, pointing directly at Guo Jiong’s guards without a single shred of doubt in her voice. ”Get a portable heat pack on that secondary valve housing right over there to melt the ice lock. You—grab that heavy steel crowbar off the emergency rack.”

Guo Jiong blinked, his body moving almost automatically to obey her command before his conscious mind even registered who was giving it. He grabbed the heavy steel crowbar from the wall rack and stepped up beside the control housing.

”Insert the bar beneath the secondary pivot pin,” Lin Qing instructed calmly, standing back and pointing precisely to the junction to show him the angle. ”When I tell the engineer to release the pressure safety valve, apply steady upward force. Don’t jerk it—lift smoothly on my count.”

Guo Jiong looked at her face from less than two feet away. Up close, under the high-stress glare of an active facility breach, the sharp, unwavering clarity in her eyes, her flawless poise, and the distinctive, authoritative way she issued orders erased every single lingering thread of doubt in his mind.

It was her.

It was the exact same soldier who had saved his small group of villager and calmly diagnosed his daughter’s awakening fever when she was slipping away.

”Now! Apply leverage!” Lin Qing commanded, her voice ringing clear over the mechanical groaning.

Guo Jiong gritted his teeth, putting his full, muscular frame into the lever, while the engineer worked the pressure valve.

CLANG!

The heavy ice-bound pin gave way with a sharp metallic snap. The engineer slammed the hydraulic manual crank downward, locking the bypass valve into place just as Lin Qing had directed.

With a massive WHOOSH, the heavy intake shutter slammed fully open. The terrible grinding noise ceased instantly. Fresh, oxygen-rich air rushed through the ventilation ducts, the pressure gauges stabilizing back into the green safety zone within seconds.

A moment later, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered back to life, flooding the intake chamber with bright, warm white light as the primary backup generator kicked back online. The shrill, deafening siren cut off completely, leaving only the steady, comforting hum of the air filters cycling smoothly through the facility.

Silence settled over the chamber. The engineers let out massive sighs of relief, leaning against the cold concrete walls to catch their breath and wipe the sweat from their brows.

Lin Qing stepped back from the control housing, pulling her coat a little tighter around her shoulders to guard against the lingering chill, her expression completely unbothered by the high-stakes situation that had just unfolded.

Song Yan walked over to the control panel, inspecting the successfully override valve before turning around to look at her. The admiration, wonder, and deep curiosity in his eyes were now impossible to hide.

”You handled that like you’ve repaired shelters a hundred times before,” Song Yan said softly, a genuine, warm smile breaking across his face. ”You didn’t even have to lift a heavy tool, yet you directed the entire repair flawlessly. I don’t know where you learned crowd management and mechanical engineering, but you just saved this entire sector from a dangerous carbon dioxide buildup.”

Lin Qing gave a slight, modest tilt of her head, her voice remaining guarded as usual. ”It was simply logical problem-solving and basic spatial awareness under pressure.”

Standing a few feet away, Guo Jiong lowered the heavy steel crowbar to the ground, his chest heaving slightly as he wiped his damp forehead with the back of his hand. He looked at Lin Qing, taking in her calm demeanor, and then shifted his gaze toward Song Yan.

Now that the immediate threat was contained, the facility was safe, and his daughter was out of danger, the immense weight of the truth burned hot in his chest. Guo Jiong took a heavy step forward, catching Song Yan’s eye with a serious look that signaled something monumental had just occurred.

”Song Yan,” Guo Jiong said, his deep voice thick with quiet, suppressed emotion. ”I need to speak to you right now. In private.”
