Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Pinned directly against the newly fallen rockslide, Lieutenant Chen and Ah Hua maintained a desperate, two-man defensive perimeter. Their rifles were raised toward the gray, overcast sky as they fired disciplined, rhythmic three-round bursts, desperately holding off the zombified avian flock swarming relentlessly overhead.

Every muzzle flash illuminated the damp fog hanging in the valley. The mutated birds—their feathers matted with dried blood and frozen gore, their milky eyes hollow and lifeless—dropped from the high pine canopy in terrifying formation.

Their sharp, jagged beaks clicked in raspy syncopation as they rode the freezing updrafts, dropping like heavy lead plummets from unpredictable angles. Ah Hua took a defensive step back, his boots slipping on the slush as a large creature raked its talons across the rocky outcrop above his head, showering his shoulders in sharp stone splinters.

Just as a trio of ragged, skeletal birds dived in tight formation toward Ah Hua’s blind spot, a sudden, crushing atmospheric pressure washed over the entire clearing.

The ambient air temperature plummeted instantly, dropping several degrees in a fraction of a second. A sharp, razor-like gust of wind sliced clean through the frozen pine canopy at the edge of the slope, snapping thick, ice-crusted branches with thunderous cracks that echoed across the granite crags like artillery fire.

Han Zheng burst onto the clearing at terrifying speed, his dark trench coat whipping violently in the icy gale, with Old Wang running half a pace behind him.

Without breaking stride, Han Zheng raised his right hand, his sharp, dark eyes locking onto the diving horde. He focused his internal power, channeling his kinetic force, and unleashed a concentrated shockwave directly into the mid-air swarm.

The atmosphere between the granite cliff face and the tree line detonated with a deafening, metallic BOOM. The sheer pressure wave rippled visibly through the freezing air, pulverizing the diving flock in mid-flight and sending a dense rain of shattered, frozen husks tumbling wildly across the slushy ground.

”High ground!” Old Wang shouted, his veteran sniper instincts taking over instantly without needing a direct command from his commander.

Scrambling onto a high, ice-slick boulder near the edge of the tree line, Old Wang leveled his custom heavy rifle, resting the long steel barrel steadily on his knee.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

With ruthless precision, Old Wang picked off the fast-moving aerial targets that attempted to flank their position. Each high-velocity round punched clean through the mutated creatures’ skulls before they could swoop low enough to strike with their jagged, filthy talons, sending their limp bodies crashing into the mountain brush below.

Seconds later, heavy, metallic footsteps crunched violently through the deep slush as the second wave of support burst through the pine tree line into the clearing.

”Xiao Li, take the front! Sun Hao, get the comms up!” Lieutenant Chen barked, ducking low as another swooping shadow cut through the misty air.

Xiao Li didn’t hesitate for a single second. Bracing his boots against the slippery, slush-covered rock face, he triggered his elemental ability. A dark, mineralized layer of dense stone armor rippled rapidly across his skin, neck, arms, and tactical shield, hardening into an impenetrable molecular barrier that gave off the dull, ominous sheen of dark granite.

He stepped directly in front of the injured Ah Hua and Lieutenant Chen, taking the full brunt of three swooping creatures at once. Razor-sharp talons slammed against his rock-coated chest and shield, shattering harmlessly with dry, hollow snaps like glass breaking against iron.

Beside him, Sun Hao unslung his heavy portable field rig, slamming a high-gain signal antenna firmly against the granite wall to map the subterranean frequency channels running deep into the cliff face. His fingers flew across his handheld receiver, filtering through heavy atmospheric static to isolate local bunker bands and scan for active internal power grids or automated emergency beacons within the secondary depot.

With Xiao Li providing an unbreakable physical shield against swooping strikes and Old Wang picking off the lingering stragglers from the high boulder above, the sky over the southern slope was swept completely clear in under ninety seconds.

A heavy, absolute silence returned to the mountain ridge, broken only by the steady, rhythmic dripping of thaw water from the overhang and the ragged breathing of the squad.

Lieutenant Chen lowered his sidearm, wiping a smear of cold blood from a minor cheek graze. ”Commander. My apologies—the thermal expansion cracked the overhang and dropped the upper shelf directly onto the blast frame.”

”Assess the situation first, apologize later,” Han Zheng said coldly, his dark eyes taking in the massive pile of shale, wet mud, and shattered ice completely sealing the recessed entryway.

Before touching the debris, Han Zheng unclipped his primary comms from his chest rig, adjusting the frequency dial with practiced ease.

”Zhou Ming, Da Yong, report,” Han Zheng commanded into the transmitter, his voice slicing through the crackling static. ”Have you completed the sweep of the final sector?”

Static crackled over the small speaker for a moment before Zhou Ming’s calm, measured voice answered from the lower ridge. ”Sweep complete, Commander. Sector 3 is a completely empty shell. No signs of human life, no structural activity, and no recent tracks. Nothing has been operational there at all.”

Han Zheng’s gaze shifted back to the buried iron doors standing in front of him. If Sector 3 was empty, this hidden subterranean military depot was the absolute final remaining stronghold in the entire mountain region.

She was inside. The realization settled deep within his chest, heavy and unshakeable, beneath his cold, stoic military exterior.

”Understood,” Han Zheng said into the receiver, his tone steady. ”Sector 4 is sealed by a rockslide, but we have located the auxiliary entrance. Converge on our coordinates immediately. We are beginning excavation.”

”Copy that, Commander. En route,” Zhou Ming replied.

Han Zheng clipped the radio back to his vest and took two steps toward the buried entryway.

”Xiao Li, with me,” Han Zheng ordered, rolling up his sleeves and adjusting his gloves. ”We clear it manually from the top seam down. No heavy explosives, no high-heat blasts.”

”Understood, Commander,” Xiao Li said, his stone armor softening back into his natural frame as he stepped up beside the fallen rock pack.

Clearing tons of packed shale, wet mud, and ice blocks without triggering a secondary cave-in from the unstable shelf above was excruciatingly slow, delicate work.

Han Zheng rested his bare palm against the frozen stone, sending subtle, micro-kinetic pulses through his fingertips to feel out the internal stress points of the pile. By vibrating and shattering the largest boulders from within, he broke them down into manageable pieces without jarring the surrounding cliffside. Once cracked, Xiao Li, Lieutenant Chen, and Ah Hua pulled the debris away by hand, stacking the heavy stones well clear of the doorway.

It was painstaking, methodical labor that demanded absolute physical concentration. Every rock pulled from the pile had to be evaluated so the weight distribution on the door frame didn’t shift abruptly and strip the hydraulic locking pins inside. But Han Zheng worked with absolute, unbroken composure, sweat glistening faintly on his brow as he lifted block after heavy block into the cold snow. He didn’t rush, and he didn’t display a single trace of impatience or fatigue.

He didn’t mind the slow, demanding pace at all. In order tonfind Lin Qing, a few hours of careful digging was nothing. Every single stone removed from the cold threshold brought him one step closer to the truth hidden behind those iron doors—and to the person he had steadfastly refused to give up on.

Inside the underground depot’s dim control bay, the harsh emergency sirens had finally been silenced, leaving only the soft red glow of status monitors reflecting off the cold stone walls. The air inside smelled faintly of ozone, old hydraulic fluid, and stale concrete, heavy with months of subterranean isolation.

Guo Jiong stood beside the main console, his broad hand resting near his holster as he watched the digital pressure distribution gauges on the screen fluctuate in steady, low rhythms.

Lin Qing leaned over the console, her dark eyes tracking the green waveform readings as they registered rhythmic, controlled vibrations from the outer seal.

”The external pressure isn’t increasing,” Lin Qing observed, her tone completely calm, sharp, and analytical. ”Whoever is out there isn’t trying to blow the blast door open or force it with raw explosives.”

Guo Jiong looked at the screen, his brow furrowing in deep thought as he folded his heavy arms across his chest. ”Then what are they doing out there?”

”They’re excavating,” Lin Qing explained, pointing her slender finger at a series of subtle, rhythmic kinetic vibrations registered by the lower stress sensors. ”They are using precise, micro-impacts to shatter the top shelf layer by layer from the center out. They understand the exact structural load of this cliff face and are intentionally preserving the door frame.”

She looked up at Guo Jiong and Song Yan, her expression thoughtful, calm, and clear. ”This isn’t a mindless horde or desperate scavengers trying to tear their way in. It’s an intelligent, highly disciplined group—and they know exactly how to unseal a hardened bunker without bringing the ceiling down on us.”
