Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The deafening, chaotic roar of the blizzard was instantly and completely severed as the inner mechanical airlocks of the research center hissed shut. The heavy seals engaged with a pressurized thud, locking out the catastrophic storm that raged across the mountain peaks.

Inside the entry vault, the silence was heavy, broken only by the ragged breathing of exhausted men. The elite squad filed back into the primary staging area in a rigid column, their heavy winter armor dripping with thick, melting slush that pooled rapidly onto the clean floorboards.

Lieutenant Chen and Da Yong dragged a battered, disarmed Lin Tao between them. The former mercenary captain was entirely stripped of his weapons, tactical gear, and heavy outer coat, his face covered in dark, weeping patches of severe frostbite.

His eyes rolled wildly, his mind visibly fractured by the terrifying speed of his defeat. Since the facility possessed no standard holding cells or iron bars, Lieutenant Chen and Da Yong marched him straight down the corridors toward a laboratory room. The room was equipped with heavy magnetic locks and isolated ventilation.

They tossed him brutally inside after tying him up, the heavy metal door clicking shut with a magnetic seal, leaving him alone in the dark to await an interrogation that would surely break whatever spirit he had left.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere in the residential suite’s private medical room was suffocatingly tense. The sterile white lights hummed softly overhead, casting a harsh glow across the clean equipment.

On the first examination table lay fourteen-year-old Ah Ming. The boy’s condition was critical, a stark testament to the brutality he had endured. His thin, malnourished frame was completely stiff, his skin an unnatural, porcelain white that seemed almost translucent under the fluorescent bulbs. His fingers and toes were completely blue, showing the dangerous advancement of severe frostbite from the biting mountain wind.

Ah Hua sat on a low metal stool right beside his brother’s bed. His shoulders were trembling violently. He held Ah Ming’s stiff, frozen hand gently between his own rough palms, trying to rub a modicum of warmth back into the unresponsive skin.

Tears cut clean, jagged lines through the dried blood covering Ah Hua’s face. He completely ignored his own minor frostbite wounds, ignored the exhaustion pulling at his limbs, and ignored the debriefing happening down the hall. His world had narrowed entirely to his brother’s pale, motionless face.

Ah Ming did not wake up. The sheer physical and psychological trauma of starvation, combined with the agonizing experience of being strapped to a freezing steel bumper in a freezing storm for hours, had thrown his frail body into a deep, protective coma. His nervous system had effectively shut down to preserve the absolute core of his life.

”He’s stable, Ah Hua, but his body has retreated into a hibernation state to protect his core organs,” Zhou Ming said softly. The soilder bent over the console, carefully adjusting the flow of the specialized thermal IV drip he had hooked into the boy’s arm to slowly, safely raise his internal temperature without shocking his heart.

He reached down, patting Ah Hua’s trembling shoulder with a steady hand. ”The starvation was severe long before he even hit the cold. The mercenaries didn’t feed him for days. It’s going to take time, maybe days, before his system feels safe enough to return to consciousness. He isn’t going to wake up immediately, but he is breathing. His heartbeat is stabilizing. You brought him home, Ah Hua. He’s safe now.”

”I’m not leaving him,” Ah Hua whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, fierce emotion that vibrated through the quiet room. He tightened his grip on his brother’s cold hand, leaning his forehead against the edge of the mattress. ”I promised him I’d look after him before the world ended. I lost him once, and I almost let him die today. I’m not moving an inch from this room.”

On the opposite side of the sterile room, completely isolated behind a thick, frosted glass partition, Han Ye lay on the secondary examination table.

Sun Hao stood anxiously by the doorway, his hands hovering awkwardly over his utility belt, his face twisted in a mixture of confusion and intense guilt. ”The security systems are all fully active. I don’t know how the kid managed to slip past the residential electronic locks and down into the primary loading bay without tripping a single line. When I found him, he was just... completely drained. He collapsed right there on the floor.”

”It’s fine, Sun Hao. The locks can be audited later. Step outside and assist Han Zheng with securing the lower laboratory wing,” Lin Qing commanded softly. Her voice was level, but her eyes never left Han Ye’s pale face.

As Sun Hao nodded quickly and stepped out, the heavy door sliding shut behind him, the room fell into a heavy, analytical silence.

Lin Qing stepped up to the metal table, her expression shifting seamlessly from the cold, calculating authority of a base commander to the sharp, intense focus of a doctor.

She reached out, her fingers pressing against the side of Han Ye’s neck to check his carotid pulse. It was abnormally slow, heavy and rhythmic, perfectly mirroring the deep hibernation state of a high-tier powered individual who had completely exhausted their internal reservoir.

Lin Qing systematically hooked up the advanced diagnostic sensors to his small chest, pulling over the advanced bio-analysis monitor. As the digital screen flared to life, rolling lines of complex genetic data, brainwave frequencies, and energy metrics began to map out his internal state in real-time.

She looked down at the data, Han Ye’s physical organs were entirely healthy, and he showed zero signs of viral infection, respiratory distress, or environmental frostbite.

Yet, his cellular energy levels—the very baseline vitality that powered human movement and metabolic function—were sitting at a critical, near-zero percentage. It was the exact diagnostic signature of an awakened mutant who had forcefully overexerted their specialized core to the point of structural backlash.

Lin Qing’s mind raced, connecting the puzzle pieces with undeniable clarity. She remembered the exact sequence of events in the courtyard outside. Lin Tao had been shouting into the camera, completely distracted by her psychological baiting over the speakers.

The mercenary guard inside the cabin had thrown his entire weight against the mechanical tripwire lever to execute Ah Ming—yet the trigger had mysteriously, completely jammed, refusing to budge and buying Han Zheng the exact split-second he needed to smash through the glass window and neutralize the threat.

The strike team had assumed it was a mechanical failure. A stroke of sheer, miraculous luck in the middle of a blizzard.

But looking at his dangerously depleted energy metrics, Lin Qing realized the truth. She knew with absolute certainty that Han Ye must have held the trigger mechanism outside from within the loading bay.

This realization solidified her absolute conviction. He was, without a doubt, a regressor.

As she stood under the sterile lights, Lin Qing’s thoughts took a chilling, complex turn. She pondered his behavior over the past month. According to the original book of this world, Han Ye was destined to become the ultimate, cold-blooded main antagonist.

He was supposed to be a monster who would bring ruin to entire strongholds, a villain driven by dark ambition and cruelty. Possessing all his dark, future memories, he ’should’ be fundamentally evil. He was textually a cold, detached person; she had always sensed that sharp, unyielding, un-childlike aura around him that didn’t belong to a five-year-old.

Yet, as she reflected on everything that had happened since she arrived, a moral paradox emerged. He had never actually harmed anyone.

On the contrary, despite his limited capabilities, he had consistently worked in the shadows to protect and save everyone around him. He had just pushed his fragile physical body to the absolute brink of cellular collapse, risking his own life, just to ensure a soilder’s little brother survived.

Most glaringly of all, he hadn’t laid a finger on Su Xiao, the girl who was supposed to be one of his greatest, most bitter enemies in the original plot of the book. Instead of seeking her destruction or sabotaging her existence, he seemed to have completely accepted her presence in the sanctuary, letting her live peacefully within their inner circle.

The original story had veered completely off its rails. The plot of the book was utterly shattered, rewritten by the very hands of the boy who was supposed to destroy it.

While this deviation was a beautiful, lifesaving thing for their family and the people they protected, it also carried a heavy weight of deep uncertainty. The future was no longer written. The guideposts of the book were gone, leaving behind a total blank slate, entirely unpredictable and wild.

Lin Qing slowly reached down, pulling the heavy thermal blanket gently up to Han Ye’s chin. She looked at his pale, innocent looking face as he slept, the dark circles under his eyes showing the cost of his heroic intervention.

She was determined to guard both this sleeping boy and the dangerous, unwritten future they were building together, step by agonizing step, in the frozen wasteland.
