Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The heavy concrete walls of the mountain research center swallowed the next forty-eight hours in a blanket of absolute, uninterrupted silence. Outside, the freezing blizzard continued its relentless assault against the jagged peaks, burying the rugged terrain under fresh sheets of jagged ice and rendering the outside world completely uninhabitable.

Within the subterranean labyrinth of the bunker, however, life settled into a quiet, highly structured routine. The transition from high-stakes combat to domestic survival required a different kind of discipline, one that the small community embraced with a desperate hunger for normalcy.

Sun Hao spent his mornings in the humid, artificial warmth of the lower agricultural sector. Under the optimized ultraviolet lighting arrays, the vibrant green shoots of their winter crops continued to defy the apocalyptic wasteland outside. The automated nutrient cycles hummed efficiently, a steady heartbeat of life buried deep within the frozen stone.

Across the central residential wing, the children followed a strict educational schedule. Sun Hao had set up a small study space, and the occasional sound of Gu An and Su Xiao reciting their mathematics formulas or reading aloud. Even Han Ye played his part flawlessly.

Trapped within his physical childhood form, the young regressor chose to let his mind rest.

He sat quietly among the other children, holding his pencil with practiced clumsiness, masking his cold nature behind the mask of a sensible, quiet child. Beneath the floorboards, his lethal shadow core abilities lay entirely dormant, pooling naturally in the dark corners of the room without the restless, defensive twitching that usually accompanied his waking hours. For these two days, he allowed his physical body to simply exist, recovering from the immense strain of the previous timeline.

Yet, beneath this surface layer of domestic peace, the internal emotional landscape of the sanctuary had undeniably fractured. Lin Qing had officially moved her belongings into the other room, exactly as Han Zheng had offered during their brief midnight encounter in the planning room. The transition had been silent, unacknowledged by either of them in front of the rest of the crew. They maintained a flawless front.

During the long daylight hours, she and Han Zheng operated with the same intuitive synergy that had kept them alive on the mountain pass. They coordinated the heavy inventory distributions, discussed the energy conservation ratios of the main generators, and analyzed perimeter reports without a single conversational hitch.

They were a perfectly calibrated command team. But whenever their eyes met over the glowing radar grids, or when their shoulders accidentally brushed, the lingering friction from the planning room hung heavily in the air. Han Zheng remained a steady, grounding presence, keeping his respectful distance to give her the space he believed she wanted.

Meanwhile, Lin Qing carried a slight emptiness in her chest—a sudden, biting sense of isolation that she refused to put into words.

On the morning of the third day, Lin Qing sought distraction from her thoughts in the repetitive, clinical work of the auxiliary infirmary. She was methodically organizing some medical supplies, counting the glass vials and updating the digital inventory, when Dr. Zhou stepped inside carrying a clipboard.

”The internal temperature in the secure wing has stabilized,” Dr. Zhou reported, her voice low and even as she adjusted her glasses. She leaned back against the stainless-steel medical counter, looking at Lin Qing with a deeply serious expression that caught her attention. ”But that’s not why I came down to find you. It’s about Dr. Chen Wei and Dr. Morse. They have completely broken down.”

Lin Qing didn’t pause her counting, her slender fingers moving methodically over the small glass vials, clicking them into their plastic organizer slots. ”Broken down how? Have they refused their meals?”

”The exact opposite,” Dr. Zhou explained, crossing her arms tightly. ”The reality of their situation has finally caught up to them. Before, they were still holding onto the stubborn belief that Gao Feng’s elite vanguard forces would storm this mountain, breach our centre, and rescue them because they had shown ’loyalty’. They treated their captivity like a temporary inconvenience. But now that two full days have passed with absolute radio silence from their faction, their reality has shattered. They realize they’ve been completely abandoned to die in the dark.”

Lin Qing set a vial down with a soft click, her face entirely impassive under the harsh fluorescent lights. ”And now they want to negotiate.”

”They’ve spent the last twelve hours begging for forgiveness,” Dr. Zhou said, nodding. ”They’re pleading to be released from their heavy restraints. They are promising their full cooperation to the sanctuary in exchange for basic survival rations and safety. They look terrified, Lin Qing.”

”Keep them locked down, Doctor,” Lin Qing replied coldly, her tone leaving no room for debate. ”Arrogance turns to repentance very quickly when starvation and isolation are the only things on the horizon. They didn’t care about cooperation when they were holding the trigger for Gao Feng. We will consider using their technical expertise only when we are entirely certain they pose absolutely no internal security threat to the children or the perimeter. For now, they remain exactly where they are.”

Once Dr. Zhou nodded and left, the silence of the infirmary returned. Lin Qing waited a moment before pulling the modified mercenary communication device from her pocket. She adjusted the small plastic earpiece, leaning back against the cold concrete wall of the infirmary as the audio feed crackled to life with a low, heavy hum of static.

For the past two days, the intercepted transmissions had painted a comprehensive picture of absolute, unmitigated disaster at the base of the ridge.

Lin Tao was rapidly finding out that orchestrating a bloody mutiny against an established commander was entirely different from actually running an operational stronghold. He possessed the violence required to overthrow a leader, but he utterly lacked the administrative capability to manage a facility of that scale, let alone a desperate, fractured population of low-level grunts who were rapidly freezing to death.

The audio logs from the mercenary base camp were a chaotic, disjointed mess of screaming matches, public insubordination, and outright panic. Because Gao Feng had ruthlessly emptied the central vault of all premium rations, high-tier munitions, and primary fuel supplies before fleeing through the hidden southern extraction route, Lin Tao’s remaining men were completely destitute.

Worse, the structural damage inflicted upon their outer defensive walls during the fires of the rebellion had left the camp fatally exposed to the elements. Over the last forty-eight hours, Lin Qing had listened to the distant, frantic reports of low-level, cold-adapted zombies testing the camp’s broken perimeters.

Lin Tao’s men had been forced to expend their remaining, precious ammunition reserves just to fight off minor waves of the undead, their firing lines growing thinner and more desperate by the hour as the cold sapped their physical strength.

Lin Tao was clearly at his wits’ end. Lin Qing could hear the raw, bleeding frustration vibrating in his voice during his internal briefings to his remaining squad leaders. He was terrified, screaming at his subordinates to maintain discipline and ration the remaining moldy grain bags, yet he explicitly commanded his inner circle never to approach the mountain research center.

He knew exactly how formidable Han Zheng and the strike team were, and he was acutely aware that a single retaliatory strike from the sanctuary would utterly obliterate his starving, disorganized remnants. They were sitting ducks, trapped in a ruined fortress, slowly waiting for the winter or the horde to claim them.

Lin Qing kept the line active as she walked back toward her room later that evening, the heavy silence of the third night settling over the bunker. She sat down at the edge of her neat, empty bed, the earpiece humming with the familiar static of the mercenary channel.

For hours, it was the same repetitive loop of despair—subordinates begging for medical supplies, reports confirming zero fuel reserves, and Lin Tao’s voice growing increasingly hoarse and desperate as he tried to maintain a fragile grip on power. She found comfort in the chaos of her enemies, using it to drown out the silence of her own room.

Then, abruptly, the ambient sound of shouting in the background of the mercenary command tower cut out completely.

The heavy, rhythmic static on the frequency seemed to clear, replaced by a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the transmission. Lin Qing leaned forward, her body freezing as her eyes narrowed in the dim amber light of her room. She pressed the earpiece closer to her ear, her focus entirely locked onto the line.

When Lin Tao spoke again, the crushing despair, anger, and panic that had characterized his voice for the last forty-eight hours were entirely gone. Instead, his voice vibrated with a sudden, manic, and highly volatile level of excitement. It was the terrifying, unhinged sound of a desperate gambler who had just drawn a winning hand from a completely dead deck.

”Gather the remaining squad leaders,” Lin Tao’s voice hissed over the encrypted airwaves, a twisted, breathless laugh cutting through the audio stream. ”Stop counting the grain bags. We don’t need to starve in this godforsaken hole anymore. I just found it... I finally found a ticket to get us inside the research center. Pack the remaining gear and prep the vehicles. We’re moving out immediately.”

The airwaves instantly went dead, leaving the frequency buried in a sudden, terrifying blanket of white noise. Lin Qing slowly pulled the earpiece away from her ear, her heart hammering violently against her ribs as she stared at the silent device in her palm. The two days of peace were officially over, and whatever Lin Tao had uncovered, it was enough to give a desperate man the confidence to challenge the sanctuary.
