Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The exhaust fumes of warming engines mixed with chilly air inside the loading bay of the research center. Heat shimmered faintly above the steel hoods of their small fleet, creating a wavering haze against the walls.

Four two-person reconnaissance teams stood assembled beside their respective vehicles: three transport trucks and a single, armored SUV fitted with a snowplow, studded treads, and a thermal-insulated frame.

Lieutenant Chen walked down the line, handing updated navigation pads to each soilder. ”Satellite signals are still degraded through the lingering storm clouds, but the four target sector coordinates are locked into your onboard guidance systems. Maintain absolute radio silence unless you make active human contact or encounter emergency extraction parameters.”

Han Zheng stood near the front of the modified SUV, adjusting his cold-weather harness and checking the action on his rifle. His expression was as hard and unyielding as granite, his icy eyes fixed on the doors at the end of the loading bay. Beside him stood his partner for the mission, Old Wang who was double-checking the battery reserves on their thermal scanners.

”We take Sector 7-A—the mining hub,” Han Zheng ordered as the heavy doors began their slow, grinding ascent, releasing a howling gust of white frost into the garage. ”Keep your eyes open and your weapons warm. Let’s move.”

The four vehicles rolled out in sequence, their heavy tires crunching through the icy drift at the bay entrance before splitting up into the blinding whiteout of the valley ridge.

An hour later, two miles south of Sanctuary Base, Han Zheng’s SUV slowed to a crawl as the mountain terrain steepened dramatically into a narrow, jagged canyon pass.

”We drop the vehicle here,” Han Zheng commanded, spotting a deep, natural ravine sheltered beneath an overhanging rock shelf off the main track.

Old Wang maneuvered the SUV deep into the shadows of the snow-covered ravine, killing the engine to muffle its roar. He immediately threw a heavy, cold-resistant camouflage tarp over the hood to prevent lingering engine heat from leaking into the cold air and drawing attention.

Arming themselves with suppressed rifles and high-frequency thermal scopes, the two men stepped out into the knee-deep drifts, setting off toward Sector 7-A entirely on foot.

Two miles to the south, deep beneath the frozen mountain core...

The steady, rhythmic hum of the central air filtration systems echoed down the rough-cut stone passageways of the secondary depot. Lin Qing walked alongside Song Yan, her gaze systematically taking in the physical layout of the living quarters, structural support pillars, and ventilation junctions.

”The people living in this wing,” Lin Qing remarked casually, watching an elderly woman mend a heavily patched woolen blanket while two young boys stacked firewood nearby. ”They seem to have settled into a steady routine. Where did they come from?”

”Small survivor groups and villagers rescued from the lower valley settlements,” Song Yan explained, his voice low and warm as he greeted a passing elder with a respectful nod. ”When the surface turned into a frozen wasteland, they were hiding out in ruined farmsteads, broken cellars, and stone cellers with almost no food left. We brought them down here, shared what little rations we had, and integrated them into the depot community. Everyone contributes where they can, whether it’s mending gear, tending filters, or standing guard.”

They reached the wide archway leading toward the outer security ring, where the ambient temperature dropped noticeably closer to the primary intake vents.

Song Yan stopped near a heavy steel bulkhead, resting his arm against the cold iron as he looked over at Lin Qing. ”You’ve got a sharp eye for layouts. Truth is, most of the people here are just survivors, hunters, and workers trying to make it through each day. There aren’t many trained military strategists. If you were in my shoes, how would you secure this outer perimeter?”

Lin Qing paused, her analytical gaze sweeping across the reinforced walls, the wiring conduit junction, and the steel doors.

”Your air intake vents over there,” she pointed toward a high-mounted duct covered by a simple iron grate. ”The structural mesh is aging and brittle. If a surface scout or hostile party manages to locate the exterior intake cowl on the mountain ridge, they could drop thermal charges, smoke, or gas straight into the residential circulation path before your guards even realize what’s happening.”

Song Yan’s jaw tightened slightly as he looked up at the duct, recognizing the glaring vulnerability immediately. ”I’ll have our repair crew double-weld reinforced steel baffle plates over the intake cowls before the end of the day shift.”

”And your guard posts at the shadow intersections,” Lin Qing added, turning her heel to face the long residential corridor behind them. ”They’re static. If a hostile force breaches that outer door, your men at the first junction have nowhere to retreat without crossing open lines of fire. You need secondary fallback lines marked with overlapping sightlines, so your people aren’t trapped in a dead-end hallway while covering an evacuation.”

Song Yan let out a soft, low breath, a look of genuine respect settling across his eyes. ”That’s remarkably practical. I appreciate you pointing that out.”

Lin Qing gave a simple, curt nod. Though her naturally guarded disposition kept her emotional distance, seeing how deeply Song Yan cared for the physical safety and survival of the people under his leadership earned a quiet, unspoken respect from her.

Down in the lower residential quarter, near the primary water distribution point...

A broad-shouldered man named Guo Jiong stood leaning against a concrete support pillar, adjusting the leather strap of his rifle. Once a quiet hunter guarding a small pocket of survivors in a rural mountain village, he now served as the depot’s Security Leader under Song Yan’s command.

The soft, frantic patter of small boots echoed down the stone passage.

Guo Jiong turned instantly, his instincts sharp, as his seven-year-old daughter came running around the corner. Her face was flushed red from the cold air, and her breath came in rapid, shallow gasps. She clutched the oversized sleeve of her hand-knitted woolen sweater, her wide, dark eyes filled with a mixture of shock and utter excitement.

”Daddy! Daddy!” she gasped, running up to him and pulling hard on the heavy leather of his jacket.

Guo Jiong dropped to one knee instantly, his calloused hands catching her small shoulders with gentle, protective concern. ”Hey, slow down, sweetheart. What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”

”No! I saw her!” the little girl stammered out, pointing excitedly back down the main residential corridor toward the command sector. ”The woman walking with Uncle Song Yan... it’s her!”

Guo Jiong’s brow furrowed in deep confusion. ”Who?”

”The soilder!” she whispered loudly, her eyes shining with absolute certainty. ”The one who came to our village! Remember? Her and everyone else helped us reach the safe zone! And when I had that terrible burning fever and couldn’t wake up, she looked at me, and told you about the medicine and the awakening fever. She saved me!”

Guo Jiong froze, his breathing stopping dead in his chest.

The memory rushed back with vivid, overwhelming intensity—the chaotic day they had been surrounded by advanced mutants, the elite military squad led by Han Zheng and Lin Qing that had killed all the beasts and even escorted them to safety, and the female soilder whose calm, precise diagnosis had saved his daughter from the fatal complications of awakening fever when all hope had vanished.

He remembered it all—even the stockpile of grains and seeds his villagers had traded to her squad in gratitude. He had no use for those seeds and had been glad to hand it over to someone who would grow them instead.

”Are you absolutely sure?” Guo Jiong asked, his voice trembling slightly with sudden, overwhelming emotion. ”You’re sure it was Lin Qing?”

”Yes! I’d recognize her face anywhere!” the little girl insisted, nodding her head vigorously.

A heavy surge of profound gratitude, shock, and disbelief washed over Guo Jiong. The very woman who had saved his daughter’s life and given his small group of villagers a chance to survive was alive—and currently walking through the corridors of their depot.

”Stay right here with Auntie Mei,” Guo Jiong said quickly, standing up as his heart pounded furiously against his ribs. ”I need to speak to Song Yan immediately.”

He turned sharply on his heel, taking three swift, eager strides toward the command passage to reveal Lin Qing’s true identity to Song Yan—

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

A deafening, harsh mechanical siren suddenly shrieked through the subterranean complex, its metallic wail echoing off the concrete walls with bone-rattling intensity.

Before anyone could react or process the sound, the overhead fluorescent lighting grid flickered violently three times and completely cut out, plunging the entire underground facility into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

A second later, blood-red emergency strobes burst to life along the ceiling conduits, casting harsh, pulsing crimson light across the stone corridors as echoes of panic and terror erupted from the residential sector.
