Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The morning sun broke over the mountain range, casting a blinding, brilliant white light across a landscape frozen in absolute silence.

The blizzard had finally run its course, leaving the valley buried under massive drifts of pristine snow. On the primary command deck of the research center, the automated climate systems quietly adjusted, humming steadily against the chill.

Lin Qing and Han Zheng stood side by side before the monitors. The atmosphere between them was smooth and cooperative, a seamless operational front that required no words to maintain. They stood in perfect lockstep, their focus entirely shifted back to the preservation of the sanctuary.

Lieutenant Chen stepped inside the room, his heavy boots echoing against the floor. He held a clipboard, his expression weary but alert after a long night of managing security rotations.

”Commander, the morning perimeter sweep is complete,” Lieutenant Chen reported, saluting briefly. ”The blast gates are clear of snow buildup, and the secondary automated turrets are fully functional. Da Yong and Xiao Li are currently checking the structural integrity of the lower ventilation shafts.”

Han Zheng nodded, his gaze remaining fixed on the external camera feeds showing the silent, snow-covered ridges. ”Good. What’s the status on our guest? How is the interrogation progressing?”

A faint, dry smirk crossed Lieutenant Chen’s face. ”Lin Tao? To be honest, Commander, he didn’t even require a formal interrogation. The man is a complete paper tiger. After the way his ambush shattered, he’s been absolutely terrified. He broke the moment we mentioned throwing him to the zombies.”

Han Zheng let out a low, rough rumble from his chest, entirely unsurprised. ”He always relied on Gao Feng’s backing. Without Gao Feng running everything, Lin Tao has no real spine. Does he know where Gao Feng and the rest fled to?”

”He genuinely has no idea where Gao Feng went,” Lieutenant Chen replied. ”Gao Feng took the core elite squad. But because Lin Tao is desperate to prove he’s too useful to execute, he’s been eagerly spilling everything else. He’s currently listing the exact personalities, specialized skills, and equipment loads of every single man who left with Gao Feng. It’s a complete breakdown of their remaining forces.”

”Keep him talking,” Han Zheng commanded coldly. ”Document every name, weapon caliber, and suspected vehicle capacity. If Gao Feng is still out in this valley, I want to know exactly what he breathes.”

Before Lieutenant Chen could acknowledge the order, a sharp, rhythmic pinging sound echoed from the far corner of the command deck.

Xiao Li, who had been monitoring the base’s long-range communication arrays, suddenly sat up straight in his chair. His fingers flew across the keyboard, his brow furrowing as a series of complex data streams began to cascade down his secondary monitor.

”Commander! Sister-in-law Lin!” Xiao Li called out, his voice cutting through the quiet room with sudden urgency. ”We have an anomaly on the long-range radar arrays. The advanced communication grid just intercepted a heavy-duty signal cutting right through the northern mountain passes.”

Lin Qing immediately stepped forward, her eyes scanning the incoming data streams as they projected onto the central glass console. ”Is it a broadcast loop from Gao Feng’s stragglers?”

”Negative,” Xiao Li said, shaking his head rapidly as he isolated the audio frequency. ”The encryption wave is incredibly tight. It’s not a sloppy, short-wave radio transmission from a chaotic mercenary band or a desperate survivor group. Listen.”

He flipped an audio toggle, and the command deck filled with a cold, highly structured mechanical sound. It wasn’t a voice—it was a series of rapid, compressed digital clicks, followed by a precise, three-second burst of high-frequency static, repeating in a disciplined, flawless cycle.

Lin Qing leaned closer to the terminal, her fingers tapping the glass interface as she began a manual decryption sweep. As the terminal processed the signal, the crooked waves began to straighten into a distinct, military-grade telemetry pattern.

”It’s an automated scout ping,” Lin Qing murmured, her voice dropping into a cold, calculating register. ”Highly structured, military-frequency encryption. They are using a multi-phase relay to bounce the signal off the higher peaks, mapping the topography of the valley.”

Han Zheng stepped up right beside her, his frame casting a long shadow over the glowing console. His eyes narrowed as he traced the digital tracking lines spreading across the map. ”A disciplined military sweep. This isn’t an unorganized rabble. Whoever is transmitting this possesses operational hardware, standardized comm-links, and a clear objective.”

He looked down at Lin Qing, his expression hard. ”They are actively searching for this sector. The storm gave us cover, but now that the skies are clear, their pings are getting closer.”

Lin Qing stared at the encrypted military data flashing green against the glass, her mind instantly shifting into an aggressive defensive state. The peaceful sanctuary they had fought so hard to secure was no longer hidden from the rest of the wasteland. The threat of the mercenaries was fading, but a far larger, highly organized power was already marching toward their gates.

”Let them sweep,” Lin Qing said softly, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, quiet confidence as she locked the frequency data into the base’s secure archives. ”They are marching blind into a mountain range they don’t understand. We have the high ground, we have the technology of this facility, and we are going to dictate exactly how they find us.”

The silence that followed was heavy with anticipation, the hum of the computers signaling that the brief respite inside the facility was already drawing to a close.

---

The hum of the command deck faded into the background as Han Zheng shifted his gaze back to Lieutenant Chen. The reality of a potential military arrival meant their timeline had just been severely compressed. The luxury of slowly integrating their new systems was gone.

”Chen,” Han Zheng barked, his voice carrying the familiar, sharp edge of absolute command. ”Double the sentry rotations on the northern ridge. If that signal is bouncing off the peaks, they likely have scouts already attempting to establish physical line of sight with the valley floor.”

”Understood, Commander,” Lieutenant Chen replied, his expression turning grim as he noted the orders. ”What about the heavy artillery placements? Should we bring the thermal batteries online?”

Lin Qing spoke before Han Zheng could answer, her fingers tracing a heat map generated by the radar sweep. ”No. Bringing the thermal batteries online will create a massive heat signature that their scout pings will lock onto instantly. Right now, the facility is perfectly camouflaged beneath the glacial layer. The thick ice and snow are absorbing our base emissions. We maintain absolute radio silence and passive thermal shielding until we know their exact trajectory.”

Han Zheng looked at her, a silent nod of agreement passing between them. Her calculation was flawless. In the wasteland, revealing your position first was an invitation to a siege.

”You heard her,” Han Zheng told Lieutenant Chen. ”Keep everything dark. Tell the men no live-fire exercises, and tell Sun Hao to keep the kids inside the residential suite. I don’t want a single stray kinetic ripple triggering their sensors.”

Lieutenant Chen saluted and turned on his heel, moving quickly down the corridor to execute the new defensive protocols. The door closed behind him, leaving Lin Qing and Han Zheng alone on the primary deck.

Lin Qing leaned back against the console, her eyes still locked on the repeating digital waveform. ”A military faction with this level of hardware means they either survived intact from the old world, or they successfully occupied a major central armory during the initial outbreak. Either way, their logistics will outmatch anything Gao Feng or Lin Tao brought to our gates.”

”Hardware wins battles, but the terrain wins wars,” Han Zheng said, his tone dark and resolute. He walked over to the table near the command table, picking up his primary sidearm and checking the chamber with practiced ease. ”They are operating in a frozen wasteland they haven’t mapped. We know every ridge, every collapsed tunnel, and every unstable snow bridge in this sector. If they try to force their way in, we’ll let the mountains bury them.”

Lin Qing watched him, noting the absolute lack of fear in his posture. It was the exact reason the men followed him without question. He was an unyielding wall against the chaos of the outside world.

”I’ll head back down to the lower laboratory,” Lin Qing said, straightening her clothes. ”I want to personally review the information Lieutenant Chen extracted from Lin Tao.”

”Go,” Han Zheng said, his eyes softening just a fraction as he looked at her. ”I’ll stay here and monitor the radar sweeps with Xiao Li. If that signal changes frequency or shifts coordinates, you’ll be the first to know.”

Lin Qing nodded, turning to leave the deck. As she walked down the corridors toward the elevator banks, the weight of the new threat pressed heavily against her mind. The tranquility of the previous evening—the quiet warmth of Han Zheng’s shoulder, the bright smile on Gu An’s face as she presented her drawing—felt like a lifetime away. The apocalypse never permitted a long rest.

When the elevator doors opened into the secure laboratory level, she was met with the sterile smell of chemical wash and cold steel. She walked down the quiet hallway until she reached the room which had become Lin Tao’s holding cell.

Through the observation glass, she could see him sitting on the edge of a steel bench. His hands were tucked between his knees, his shoulders slumped in complete defeat. The fierce, arrogant raider who had threatened to burn their sanctuary to the ground was gone, replaced by a pathetic, shivering man who jumped at every flicker of the facility’s lights.

Lin Qing didn’t bother trying to speak to him. She didn’t need to. The information Chen had extracted were already waiting for her.

Lin Tao had truly held nothing back. The file was an extensive, messy brain dump of every piece of intelligence he possessed. He had listed names, physical descriptions and weapon preferences.

One name in particular caught her eye: Gao Feng’s primary vanguard, a man named Zhao Kang.

According to Lin Tao’s frantic description, Zhao Kang possessed a reinforced muscular mutation that allowed him to harden his skin to the density of iron for short bursts, making him virtually immune to standard baseline kinetic fire. He was Gao Feng’s battering ram.

Lin Qing frowned, her mind immediately analyzing the biological limitations of such a mutation. ”Increased muscle density requires a massive, immediate surge of glycogen and oxygen,” she murmured to herself. ”If his skin hardens, his cellular respiration must skyrocket. If we can introduce a localized carbon monoxide or nitrogen gas burst during his active phase, his blood toxicity will spike instantly, causing immediate muscle collapse.”

The elite squad could deploy a chemical formula for a defensive aerosol compound via the base’s ventilation traps or standard tactical grenades. It was a brutal, efficient countermeasure—exactly what was required to survive.

Hours passed in the quiet laboratory as Lin Qing worked, her focus entirely consumed by the defense of her family. By the time she finished drafting the profiles for the top three targets in Gao Feng’s remaining squad, the internal clock of the facility indicated it was late afternoon.

Her door chimed softly, and Han Zheng walked into the laboratory suite. He looked tired, the dark stubble on his jaw stark against his pale skin, but his eyes were sharp.

”The signal stopped,” he said without preamble, walking over to stand behind her chair, his gaze dropping to the chemical formulas on the monitor.

Lin Qing looked up, her brow raising. ”Completely?”

”No,” Han Zheng explained, his voice low. ”It didn’t fade out. It was deliberately shut down. Xiao Li tracked the final telemetry burst before the transmitter went dark. They have established a stationary base camp roughly fifteen kilometers north of our outer perimeter, just on the other side of the frozen river fork.”

Lin Qing’s expression hardened. ”Fifteen kilometers. That’s within standard mechanized scouting range. If they have winterized vehicles, they could reach our outer gates in less than twenty minutes once the snow settles.”

”They are dug in,” Han Zheng said, his hand coming down to rest firmly on the back of her chair, his presence a solid, grounding weight behind her. ”Which means they are preparing for a prolonged reconnaissance operation. They don’t know exactly where we are yet, but they know something is hidden in this valley.”

Lin Qing turned in her seat, looking up at him. The cold strategist in her mind took over, but the absolute trust she had placed in him the night before remained unshaken. ”What’s the plan?”

Han Zheng’s lips thinned into a hard, dangerous line. ”We don’t sit here and wait for them to stumble onto our front door. Tomorrow morning, once the first light hits the ridges, I’m taking Chen and Da Yong out on a passive scouting run. We’re going to get eyes on their camp and find out exactly who we’re dealing with.”

Lin Qing stared at him for a second, her heart tightening slightly at the prospect of him leaving the safety of the reinforced base, but she knew better than to argue. He was a commander; he belonged on the field when a threat loomed.

”Take the cloaking cloaks we salvaged from the lower storage vaults,” Lin Qing instructed, her tone firm and unyielding. ”The thermal dampening fabric will prevent their automated sensors from picking up your heat signatures against the snow. And take the localized aerosol units I just developed. If you run into Gao Feng’s vanguards out in the frost, this will level the playing field.”

Han Zheng looked down at her, a rare, deep warmth flickering in his dark eyes as he noted the meticulous defensive measures she had prepared for him. He reached out, his hand briefly covering hers where it rested on the armrest of the chair. The touch was brief, but it carried the absolute weight of his devotion.

”I’ll be back before the afternoon temperature drops,” he promised softly.

Lin Qing squeezed his hand in return, her face remaining composed but her heart full. The blizzard outside had died, the gray clouds had parted, and the cold reality of a new war was beginning to dawn over the frozen mountains.

But as she looked at the man standing beside her, she knew that no matter what military force marched toward their valley, the sanctuary would stand. They had something worth fighting for now, and the unwritten future belonged entirely to them.
