Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The bright satellite telemetry map continued to flicker silently on the terminal screen, casting a soft, blue hue across Dr. Zhou’s delighted face. But in the quiet shadow behind Lin Qing, Han Ye’s small fists remained tightly clenched inside his coat pockets.

Break the silence. He had to say something—not as a regressor carrying decades of apocalyptic trauma, but as a curious, innocent five-year-old child.

”Dr. Zhou,” Han Ye spoke up, his small, clear voice cutting cleanly through the hum of the cooling fans. He tilted his head slightly, putting on an expression of naive, childish curiosity. ”If the ice melts... won’t the frozen things outside wake up too?”

Dr. Zhou’s cheerful, triumphant smile froze instantly on her face. Her hand, which had been resting proudly against the edge of the console desk, slowly slipped downward as the simple, unvarnished logic registered in her mind.

She blinked once, twice, staring at the small boy as the blood slowly drained from her cheeks.

Standing right beside him, Lin Qing’s clear eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter.

In that single, quiet second, the lingering pieces of Lin Qing’s past-life memory—scraps of the book plot she had read before transmigrating into this world—locked into place with horrifying clarity.

Han Ye’s question had exactly hit one of the story’s core disasters. In the original novel, the premature melting of the northern ice cap was never a divine mercy or a harbinger of spring for human survivors.

Tens of thousands of mutated apex predators, flesh-tearing avian swarms, and high-tier zombie variants that had been flash-frozen solid during the initial sub-zero impact were not dead. They were merely locked in cryo-stasis, their mutated cellular structures preserved intact under meters of glacial ice.

The extreme, suffocating cold had never been a curse—it had been humanity’s greatest protective shield, holding the post-apocalyptic nightmare in check.

The moment the dark atmospheric cloud cover thinned and surface temperatures rose, the world wouldn’t heal. The ice would soften, releasing millions of starving, mutated horrors back onto the landscape all at once.

Lin Qing breathed out slowly through her nose, keeping her posture perfectly relaxed and effortless. She couldn’t afford to trigger a base-wide panic right now. The strike squad had only just returned from a grueling, high-stakes deployment at Gao Feng’s fortress.

The base’s secondary defense grids were still running, and the soldiers were operating on pure physical exhaustion. A midnight crisis meeting born out of sudden panic would only breed sloppiness and demoralize the men.

”Dr. Zhou,” Lin Qing said softly, her steady, grounded voice cutting smoothly through the sudden, suffocating hush in the room. ”The satellite data you retrieved is invaluable, but atmospheric weather shifts don’t happen in a single night. A massive blizzard passed through the pass only hours ago. We have time.”

Dr. Zhou swallowed hard, her throat making a dry, clicking sound. She reached up with a trembling hand, pushing her thick reading glasses up the bridge of her nose twice in rapid succession. ”R-Right... of course. Atmospheric thermal transfer takes time. It’s a gradual, thermodynamic process...”

”Get your raw diagnostic files archived and shut down the active satellite frequency link for the night,” Lin Qing commanded calmly, her tone offering the older woman a quiet anchor of certainty. ”Everyone needs rest. We will hold a formal assessment first thing tomorrow morning with the core team and decide on our defensive adjustments.”

Dr. Zhou let out a long, shuddering breath, nodding quickly as her fingers flew across her keyboard to lock down the terminal screens. ”Yes, Commander. That’s... that’s very sensible. Tomorrow morning.”

Lin Qing looked down at Han Ye. She rested a light, approving hand on the small boy’s shoulder for a brief second—a silent acknowledgement of his sharp intervention—before gesturing toward the automated glass doors. ”Come on. Let’s go get dinner.”

The walk from the medical wing to the residential sector took them through the quiet, climate-controlled arterial corridors of the underground facility. The soft overhead LED strips cast a warm, steady illumination across the polished concrete floors, shielding the occupants completely from the howling gale that still battered the mountain surface.

Lin Qing walked with a measured, unhurried stride, her hands resting loosely in the pockets of her tactical jacket. Beside her, Han Ye walked with identical composure, his small boots making light, rhythmic taps against the floor. To an outside observer, they looked like a quiet, composed mother taking her young ward to dinner. In reality, both possessed minds calculating the exact same countdown—measuring the precious weeks remaining before the frozen world outside began to thaw.

When they stepped through the doors into the residential suite, the atmosphere shifted into a stark, cozy contrast to the sterile solitude of the medical wing.

The spacious dining room was flooded with bright, golden overhead lighting. The rich, mouth-watering aroma of long-simmered meat stew, aromatic root vegetables, and freshly steamed grain filled every corner of the room.

The long oak dining table in the center of the room had been cleared of blueprints and maps. Almost the entire returning strike team was gathered around it, sitting on bench seats, talking in low, warm hums of contentment.

Ah Hua was already halfway through his second massive porcelain bowl, laughing loudly at a joke Xiao Li made about the ice buildup on the transport’s front bumper. Captain Lu Feng and Lieutenant Chen sat near the foot of the table, quietly comparing guard schedules over steaming mugs of dark tea.

The moment Lin Qing, Dr. Zhou, and Han Ye entered the dining hall, Sun Hao wiped his hands on his apron and immediately scooped three fresh, steaming bowls of stew from the massive iron pot resting on the counter.

”Eat up while it’s piping hot, sister-in-law,” Sun Hao said with a wide, weary smile as he set the heavy bowls down near the head of the table. ”I used the beef cuts from the cold storage and made extra broth tonight.”

”Thank you, Sun Hao,” Lin Qing said softly, pulling out a chair along the far side of the long wooden table.

Han Ye quietly pulled out the heavy wooden chair directly to her left, climbing onto the seat with tidy, efficient movements and picking up his spoon without needing a single reminder

.

Han Zheng, who was seated across the table a few positions down, looked up from his meal as they settled in. His sharp, dark eyes swept over Lin Qing first, instantly taking in her relaxed shoulders and smooth expression, before drifting silently toward Dr. Zhou.

The veteran commander’s eyes narrowed slightly. The older scientist was acting entirely out of character.

Dr. Zhou sat down stiffly on the edge of her wooden seat, holding her spoon with a tight, white-knuckled grip that made her knuckles turn pale. Her eyes kept darting nervously toward the thick, heavy curtains covering the far wall’s observation glass, her fingers tapping a restless, erratic rhythm against the edge of the wood. She took tiny, distracted bites of her food, her jaw clenching tightly whenever the faint rumble of the outdoor ventilation fans vibrated through the floorboards.

Han Zheng’s instincts flared subtly beneath his quiet exterior. He recognized those physical markers immediately—they were the unmistakable signs of suppressed panic and hyper-vigilance. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that something heavy had been uncovered down in the medical lab during their brief status check.

Yet, Han Zheng did not ask a single question.

He didn’t press Dr. Zhou, nor did he break the comfortable, cheerful mood of the tired squad gathered around the table. Instead, he shifted his dark gaze back to Lin Qing. He saw how unruffled and completely composed she remained as she blew softly on her spoon, taking quiet care of Han Ye beside her.

He trusted her judgment without reservation. If whatever Dr. Zhou discovered required an immediate midnight response or an emergency defense protocol, Lin Qing would have alerted him the second she crossed the threshold into the dining hall.

Since she chose composed silence, he respected her lead implicitly, allowing the exhausted squad to enjoy their hard-won meal in peace.

Directly across the long wooden table from Lin Qing and Han Ye sat Lu Ning.

Stripped completely of her former self-righteousness, Lu Ning looked like a ghost of her past self.

After a full day of forced manual labor and constant surveillance, Lu Ning’s fiery defiance had completely withered into hollow submission.

She sat with her thin shoulders hunched inward, her head bowed low over her bowl. She ate her stew in absolute, bitter silence, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on her food, intentionally avoiding any possibility of eye contact with Lin Qing or Han Zheng in a desperate attempt to remain as invisible as possible.

However, sitting right beside Lu Ning was Yang Jun—one of Captain Lu Feng’s trusted squad members.

Unlike Lu Ning, who was actively trying to shrink into the shadows of her seat, Yang Jun was not paying the slightest attention to his food.

He leaned back slightly against the wooden backrest of his chair, his broad elbow propped casually on the table as his fingers loosely encircled his metal tea mug. His unblinking eyes were fixed directly across the wooden surface, staring intently at Lin Qing, before shifting down slowly to focus on five-year-old Han Ye.

There was no open hostility in his posture, nor was there any obvious malice radiating from his body. But his expression was strange.

Lin Qing raised her spoon to her lips, her sharp peripheral vision instantly catching the persistent, unmoving weight of his eyes on her face.

She paused for a fraction of a second, her clear, dark gaze shifting up from her bowl to lock directly onto Yang Jun across the steaming surface of the table.

Yang Jun did not quickly avert his eyes, nor did he pretend to be distracted by his food like a soldier caught staring out of place. Instead, his unreadable, assessing expression remained completely steady, holding Lin Qing’s sharp gaze through the rising curls of steam from the hot stew as an unspoken, heavy tension settled over their corner of the quiet room.
