Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The hum of the medical room’s air filtration system was the only sound echoing through the quiet, sterile corridor. On the command deck, Sun Hao had officially submitted his detailed security log, noting with absolute confusion how the young boy had been found collapsed right at the inner threshold of the primary loading bay’s blast gates.

Upon receiving the report, Han Zheng had practically abandoned his post, rushing towards the research center with his heart hammering violently against his ribs. He didn’t care about the captured mercenaries or the hidden Gao Feng. His only focus was the safety of his family.

When he reached the doors of the residential medical room, Lin Qing stepped out into the quiet hallway, silently closing the door behind her. Her expression was grave, her medical tablet clutched tightly against her chest.

”How is he?” Han Zheng asked, his voice a low, rough rumble laced with an anxiety he rarely ever showed to his men. ”Sun Hao said he was unconscious. Is it the cold? Did he breathe in chemical exhaust?”

”He’s physically uninjured, and he didn’t suffer from frostbite,” Lin Qing said softly, turning the diagnostic screen toward him. ”But his cellular energy levels are sitting at a critical near-zero. It’s definitely a severe power backlash from overusing powers.”

Han Zheng’s brow furrowed, his eyes scanning the complex graphs of energy depletion. ”Backlash? But Han Ye hasn’t...” He trailed off, his sharp mind instantly connecting the timeline. ”The courtyard. The mechanical tripwire on the lead truck. It didn’t fail, did it?”

”No,” Lin Qing confirmed, her voice dipping into a whisper. ”Han Ye used the blast doors as a physical conduit to stretch his shadow across the freezing courtyard and physically lock that trigger in place. He saved Ah Ming’s life. But his physical body is only five years old. His neural pathways and muscles cannot handle that level of energy output yet.”

”Go in and talk to him,” Lin Qing advised, her eyes slightly soft. ”But remember, do not talk to him like a commander debriefing a soldier. Don’t ask him for explanations. He acts so mature, so quiet and unproblematic, that it’s easy to forget he is just a little boy who is trying too hard to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. Speak to him as his father. Help him understand that he doesn’t have to break himself to keep us safe.”

Lin Qing had read the book, she knew the horrors Han Ye had experienced and she felt like this would be the best approach.

Han Zheng took a deep, steadying breath, the tension in his shoulders softening slightly at her words. He nodded before sliding the frosted glass door open and stepping into the warm, quiet room.

---

Inside the room, the air was comfortably warm, carrying the faint, clean scent of sterilized linen.

On the examination bed, Han Ye slowly began to stir. His eyelids felt like iron weights, and a deep, systemic ache vibrated through every single muscle fiber in his tiny body. The shadow core in his chest was oddly silent and depleted.

As consciousness slowly returned, Han Ye immediately snapped onto high alert. He remembered collapsing in the dark loading bay. He knew he had slipped past security.

’They know,’ Han Ye thought, his brow twitching slightly as he kept his eyes closed, analyzing his situation. ’I got more depleted than I had anticipated and couldn’t get back in time.’

Han Ye immediately began meticulously drafting a plausible, child-like lie. He would claim he was terrified by the loud speakers, that he ran down to find his dad, that he suddenly felt very dizzy and fell asleep. He would put on his best innocent, lovable child act.

He slowly blinked his eyes open, bracing himself to face a lecture. The first thing he saw was a large, solid silhouette sitting quietly on the edge of his mattress.

Han Zheng was leaning forward, his hands clasped loosely between his knees. He wasn’t looking at Han Ye with disapproval or anger. His eyes—usually so fierce and terrifying on the battlefield—were incredibly soft, filled with a profound, aching parental warmth and a deep, quiet anxiety.

”Hey, buddy,” Han Zheng murmured, his voice incredibly gentle, dropping to a low, soothing register that was reserved solely for his family. ”You’re awake. Don’t try to sit up yet. Your body is still really tired.”

Han Ye froze, his prepared lies instantly dying in his throat. He looked up at his father, his small hands clutching the edge of the thick thermal blanket. ”Dad...” he whispered, his voice sounding incredibly small, even to his own ears. ”I... I was scared. I went to the doors because—”

”I know,” Han Zheng interrupted softly. He didn’t ask for details. Instead, he reached out, his warm hand gently resting on top of Han Ye’s head, his fingers lightly stroking through the boy’s soft, dark hair.

The physical contact was incredibly warm. In Han Zheng’s eyes, Han Ye was simply his incredibly smart and lovable little boy. Han Zheng had already noticed that Han Ye was acting far more mature than other children, but in his mind, his son was just trying to be a ”grown-up” to make his parents proud. He found his son’s quiet, unproblematic nature deeply endearing, even if it sometimes worried him how little the boy demanded of them.

”You did a very brave thing today, Han Ye,” Han Zheng said, his eyes shining with a mixture of pride and sorrow. ”You saved Ah Ming. Your dad is incredibly proud of how smart and brave you are. But...”

Han Zheng paused, his hand moving down to gently cup his son’s pale cheek. His calloused thumb softly against Han Ye’s skin, feeling the faint, lingering chill of the storm.

”Your mother and I found this sanctuary so you could have a home,” Han Zheng said, his voice thick with a father’s fierce, protective instinct. ”We fight those monsters, and we face those mercenaries, so that you don’t have to. If you break your own body, if you push yourself to the point of collapsing just to protect us... then what are we even fighting for? What is the point of this whole base if my own son has to bleed to keep it standing?”

Han Ye stared up at him, his chest tightening. He had spent his entire previous life as a fighter, a leader, and eventually, the ultimate villain. He had been taught that his only value lay in his utility—in how many enemies he could kill, how much territory he could conquer, and how strong his shadow core could become. Nobody had ever looked at him and told him that his physical safety was more important than his strategic value.

”Dad, I... I can help,” Han Ye murmured, his voice trembling slightly. ”I’m strong. I can—”

”No, buddy,” Han Zheng said firmly, though his eyes remained tender. He leaned closer, pressing his forehead gently against his son’s small, warm forehead. ”You are five years old. It is not your job to carry the weight of this sanctuary. It is my job to be your shield. You are allowed to just be a kid. You are allowed to play, to learn, and to let us handle the bad guys. Promise me, Han Ye... promise me you won’t risk your own life like that again. If anything ever happened to you, it would break me.”

The simple, unyielding weight of those words shattered the last of Han Ye’s mental fortresses.

The large, warm hand stroking his hair, the absolute safety radiating from his father’s solid presence, and the soft, worried look in Han Zheng’s eyes bypassed every single one of the tiny regressor’s defenses.

Suddenly, Han Ye realized how much he had missed this. Since reuniting with his father in this timeline, the road had been incredibly chaotic. The constant journey to the research center, the mercenary attacks, and the daily, grueling struggle to establish the sanctuary had left them with almost no quiet, personal time together.

Han Zheng was always coordinating defenses. Han Ye had almost forgotten what it felt like to be held, to be shielded, and to feel the absolute, unconditional comfort of paternal warmth.

As he looked into his father’s eyes, the cold, ruthless ”future antagonist” of the book completely vanished.

In his mind, the dark, lonely years of his past life flashed before his eyes. He remembered the decades he had spent after losing Han Zheng in that original timeline—freezing in the ruins, starving in the dark, with absolutely no one to offer him a hand, let alone a shield. He had spent a lifetime fighting completely alone, hated by his enemies and feared by his allies, carrying a suffocating, bone-deep loneliness that had slowly rotted his soul.

But in this life, he wasn’t alone. He had both Lin Qing and Han Zheng.

A sudden, sharp sob caught in Han Ye’s throat. Before he could stop them, hot, silent tears began to spill over his eyelashes, tracing wet paths down his pale cheeks. He didn’t cry like a cold, calculated regressor hiding behind a mask; he cried like a terrified, deeply relieved five-year-old child who had finally, after a lifetime of storms, found a safe harbor.

”Hey, hey, it’s okay, buddy,” Han Zheng murmured, his heart breaking at the sight of his usually quiet, stoic son suddenly weeping.

He immediately leaned down, wrapping his arms around Han Ye’s small frame and lifting him gently off the pillows. He pulled his son tightly against his broad, warm chest, cradling the back of the boy’s head with his large hand. He rocked him slowly, letting Han Ye bury his wet face directly into the collar of his uniform.

”Dad is here,” Han Zheng whispered, his own eyes growing misty as he held his son close, feeling the small boy’s tiny shoulders shake with quiet, heavy sobs. ”I’ve got you, Han Ye. You’re safe. I promise you, as long as I am breathing, nothing is ever going to hurt you again. You don’t have to carry this alone anymore.”

Han Ye clutched tightly at the fabric of Han Zheng’s uniform, his tiny fingers bunching the heavy material as he wept. He let the tears wash away the decades of ice, loneliness, and fear that had hardened his heart in his past life. He realized, with absolute certainty, that this timeline was different. The story had changed because he was loved, and for the first time in two lifetimes, he was allowed to just be a son.
