Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The heavy doors of the agricultural sector slid shut with a soft, sealing hiss, locking the warm, humid air of the greenhouse behind them. As Lin Qing and Han Zheng walked side by side up the quiet stairwells toward the residential suite, a profound sense of lightness settled over Lin Qing’s shoulders.

She hadn’t planned on confessing her identity shift to him so soon—certainly not while the adrenaline from Lin Tao’s failed ambush was still settling over the base. Yet, as she watched the flickering shadows stretch across the clean walls, she felt an overwhelming wave of gratitude that it had happened. The suffocating weight of her secrets hadn’t completely vanished, but the crushing loneliness of carrying them alone had.

When they reached the main dining hall of the residential suite, the remaining members of the elite squad were finishing a late, light dinner. The atmosphere was calm but alert; Lieutenant Chen and Da Yong had already established a rotating guard schedule for the night, and Zhou Ming reported that both Ah Ming and Han Ye were resting peacefully under the medical wing’s monitoring grids.

Lin Qing and Han Zheng sat together, sharing a quiet, simple meal of broth and preserved vegetables with the team. There were no grand declarations, no intense looks, and no sudden changes in their public behavior. To the rest of the squad, they were still the steady, formidable pillars of the sanctuary. But beneath the surface, the sharp, defensive tension that usually crackled between them had completely evaporated.

After dinner, the base began to wind down for the night. Lin Qing and Han Zheng walked back toward their quarters. Though they still retired to separate bedrooms within the suite, the air between them as they said their goodnights was entirely different. It was comfortable, grounded, and thick with an unspoken understanding.

Lin Qing changed into a pair of soft, clean loungewear and lay down on her bed, staring up at the smooth, industrial panels of the ceiling. The heavy blankets wrapped around her felt warmer than usual. Her mind, usually a chaotic calculator running infinite worst-case survival scenarios, was uncharacteristically quiet. She closed her eyes, letting her breathing slow as she prepared to drift off into a deep, dreamless sleep.

Knock. Knock.

Lin Qing’s eyes snapped open. Her instincts instantly coiled her muscles, but she forced herself to relax when she realized how the sound carried. It wasn’t the sharp, urgent pounding of a security breach or a medical emergency. It was a very soft, incredibly hesitant, and light tapping at the very bottom of the heavy wooden door.

Frowning slightly, Lin Qing threw off her blankets, stepped into her slippers, and walked across the cool floor. When she pulled the door open, the dim, amber nightlights of the residential corridor spilled into her room, illuminating a small figure standing in the hallway.

It was Gu An.

The little girl was clutching the sleeves of her oversized sweater, her large, bright eyes wide with a mixture of anxiety and sudden panic. Gu An rarely ever approached Lin Qing on her own.

She was an incredibly perceptive child; she knew how busy, important, and inherently dangerous the world outside was, and she had always viewed Lin Qing as a figure of absolute authority—harsh, cold, and strictly focused on the survival of the base. But she also knew that Lin Qing was the person who had rescued her out of the harsh Syndicate.

The moment Gu An noticed the slightly sleepy, relaxed look on Lin Qing’s face and realized she had actually awoken her, the little girl’s face went entirely pale.

”I-I’m so sorry!” Gu An whispered frantically as she took a hasty step backward into the corridor. ”I didn’t think you were sleeping yet. I’m sorry to bother you, I’ll go back to the kids’ quarters right now—”

”Gu An, stop,” Lin Qing interrupted. Her voice carried its usual level, unyielding tone, but she reached out, her hand gently catching the fabric of the girl’s sleeve before she could scurry down the dark hallway like a frightened rabbit. ”It’s fine. I wasn’t asleep yet. Come inside.”

Gu An blinked up at her, hesitant, but the gentle tug on her sleeve was enough to convince her. She shuffled into the warm room, her small shoes clicking quietly against the floorboards.

To prevent the young girl from freezing up or feeling too awkward in the private space, Lin Qing closed the door and leaned against her desk, folding her arms. She deliberately softened her sharp eyes, shifting the conversation to something familiar. ”How have you and Su Xiao been doing? Have you been eating enough?”

The distraction worked perfectly. The rigid anxiety in Gu An’s small frame melted away instantly, replaced by a bright, energetic spark that seemed to illuminate the entire room.

”Yes! Sun Hao made sure we had extra warm stew tonight,” Gu An said eagerly, her words tumbling out over one another as she cheered up. ”And, our training is going so well! Look!”

Gu An took a deep breath, her face tightening with intense focus. A split second later, a faint, translucent ripple of energy flickered into existence around her small hands, solidifying into a remarkably stable kinetic barrier before she let it dissipate with a proud grin. ”See? My barrier is way stronger now! It doesn’t break even when someone throws something hard towards it. And Su Xiao is doing amazing too! She can levitate small metal screws and blocks for a whole minute now without getting a headache!”

Lin Qing watched the girl’s animated gestures, a quiet, genuine sense of satisfaction warming her chest. ”Is that so?”

”Mhm! And Sun Hao is a really good teacher,” Gu An continued, her eyes sparkling. ”We did math puzzles today! He made us calculate the trajectory of the training blocks using numbers, and it was actually really fun.”

Looking at the bright, vibrant life radiating from the little girl, Lin Qing felt a deep, reflective wave of emotion. When she had first rescued Gu An from the Syndicate grounds, she had convinced herself it was purely a transactional decision. Gu An had helped her during a critical moment, and in Lin Qing’s mind, she simply owed the girl a debt.

The apocalypse was an unforgiving, merciless era. In a world where resources were scarce and zombies clawed at the gates, one simply could not afford to soften their heart for every crying child or desperate survivor. Doing so was an easy way to get killed. Therefore, Gu An’s bravery had given Lin Qing the perfect, logical justification she needed to step in and save her without feeling like she was succumbing to foolish sentimentality.

But looking at her now—safe, learning, and thriving within the walls of the research center—Lin Qing realized the justification didn’t matter anymore. She was just incredibly glad she had saved this bright little girl.

”You’ve done a very good job, Gu An,” Lin Qing said softly.

Stepping forward, Lin Qing reached out. The movement was slightly awkward and clumsy, as she was entirely unaccustomed to demonstrating physical affection, but she gently patted the top of Gu An’s head, smoothing down a few stray strands of her dark hair.

To Gu An, that simple, clumsy pat meant the absolute world. Her entire face lit up, a wide, radiant smile splitting her cheeks. She absolutely lived for the rare moments of praise from the cold, brilliant woman who had saved her life.

”I wanted to give you this,” Gu An said, her voice dropping to a shy, proud whisper.

She reached deep into the pocket of her oversized sweater and pulled out a tightly folded, slightly creased piece of drawing paper. She stepped forward, holding it out with both hands as if she were presenting a priceless artifact to a queen.

Lin Qing took the paper, carefully unfolding it under the soft light of her desk lamp.

It was a hand-drawn graphite sketch of Lin Qing herself. It was exactly what one would expect from a ten-year-old child using basic art supplies—the proportions were slightly off, the shading around the coat was a bit heavy, and the lines of the research center background were noticeably crooked. But the expression captured on the paper was unmistakable. Gu An hadn’t drawn the terrifying, unyielding commander’s wife that the mercenaries feared. She had drawn Lin Qing with a soft, calm, and protective gaze, her eyes rendered with a warmth that Lin Qing rarely ever allowed herself to show to the outside world.

”I drew it from memory,” Gu An whispered, twisting her fingers nervously. ”While you were out in the blizzard fighting the bad guys. I wanted you to have it.”

Lin Qing stared at the drawing for a long moment, the rough graphite textures reflecting the dim light. A strange, beautiful warmth bloomed deep within her chest, melting the last remnants of the cold shield she had always worn.

”I love it, Gu An,” Lin Qing said, her voice softer than it had ever been. She looked up, offering the little girl a rare, incredibly genuine smile that completely transformed her sharp features. ”You have a lot of talent. Your lines are very clean. Thank you.”

Gu An looked as if she might float right out of the room. Delighted beyond measure, her cheeks flushing a bright pink from the praise, she nodded quickly. ”I’ll go to sleep now so I can train harder tomorrow! Goodnight, Sister Lin!”

”Goodnight, Gu An. Go straight back to the room.”

The little girl turned and practically skipped out of the room, leaving on absolute cloud nine.

Lin Qing stood by the closed door for a long time, the quiet silence of the research center wrapping around her once more. She walked back to her bed, holding the folded piece of paper gently between her fingers. She looked down at the sketch again, tracing the rough lines of her own face drawn by a child who looked up at her with nothing but pure, unadulterated devotion.

In her previous life, she had been an island—isolated, self-reliant, and fundamentally alone. When she first arrived in this apocalyptic wasteland, she had viewed it as a prison of survival, a brutal landscape where love was a liability and family was a weakness.

But holding that simple drawing under the dim lights of a buried laboratory, Lin Qing realized the truth. Within this terrifying, broken world, surrounded by a freezing blizzard and a horde of monsters, she had accidentally found exactly what she had spent a lifetime secretly longing for.

She had found a real family. And she was going to protect them with everything she had.
