Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Over the next two days, the subterranean research facility buzzed with a disciplined intensity. With the first major joint supply run scheduled for Thursday morning, every operational sector was pushed to its maximum productivity. The air inside the corridors smelled faintly of engine oil, ozone from the solar-grid converters, and the sharp, clean scent of medical disinfectant.

In the primary vehicle bay, the atmosphere was dominated by the heavy clanking of tools and the low rumble of tested engines.

Han Zheng and Captain Lu Feng spent long hours alongside the other soilders, meticulously inspecting every square inch of the heavy armored squad carriers.

They retrofitted the tactical vests with specialized thermal cloaks—layers designed to baffle heat signatures and prevent the mutated beasts lurking in the frozen mountain valley from detecting human body warmth. Lu Feng’s men worked with practiced efficiency, thoroughly impressed by the sheer level of organization Han Zheng and lin Qing had maintained in such an isolated place.

Down in the medical wing, Lin Qing was equally absorbed in her duties. Alongside Dr. Zhou, she conducted a thorough inventory audit of the base’s remaining pharmaceutical reserves. She organized emergency field trauma kits, calculated precise dosages for winter antibiotic distribution, and established strict contingency protocols in the event that the upcoming expedition encountered heavy casualties or unexpected biological exposure.

Even the children were kept under a tight schedule; during the afternoons, Sun Hao guided Han Ye, Gu An, and Su Xiao through physical conditioning drills and foundational knowledge.

Throughout all this activity, the facility’s automated security grid functioned smoothly in the background. High-definition motion sensors, thermal cameras, and external perimeter sweeps remained locked outward toward the surrounding wasteland.

Every eye was turned toward external threats—the lingering tracks of rest of Gao Feng’s scattered mercenaries and the unpredictable movements of mutated infected roaming the sub-zero valley. Inside these blast-proof walls, surrounded by trusted allies and rescued survivors, no one considered the possibility of internal sabotage.

Han Zheng and Lin Qing were not entirely blind to Lu Ning’s awkward demeanor over the past forty-eight hours. They had both observed her lingering, hesitant glances toward Han Zheng and her stiff, unyielding coldness toward Lin Qing during brief encounters.

However, they interpreted her behavior through a practical lens: she was a young, naive girl harboring a misplaced infatuation with an elite military commander, coupled with a touch of quiet jealousy toward the woman at his side. While her presence was somewhat uncomfortable, neither of them viewed her as a big security risk. She was simply an insecure guest struggling to find her footing—certainly not a threat capable of committing treason inside a high-security facility.

Consequently, while every other occupant moved with clear purpose, Lu Ning remained the sole idle variable in the base.

Having no military duties, medical training, or maintenance responsibilities, her days stretched out long, empty, and suffocatingly quiet. Left alone with her thoughts in a foreign environment, her initial insecurity quickly curdled into resentment. Driven by a mix of boredom and an obsessive desire to uncover ”proof” against Lin Qing, Lu Ning began taking advantage of the base’s busy operational schedule.

Whenever the corridors emptied during major guard shift rotations, she quietly slipped away from the residential wing and navigated down toward the lower levels.

Through the thick reinforced glass of the holding room, Lin Tao executed his role with ruthless precision. He fed her a constant stream of fabricated, heart-wrenching lies.

Every afternoon, he wept softly, detailing imaginary tortures and claiming he had overheard guards discussing plans to ”dispose” of him quietly. He painted Lin Qing as a ruthless, power-hungry monster who had stolen his freedom and buried her dark past under Han Zheng’s authority.

Lin Tao played expertly on Lu Ning’s latent insecurities, making her feel like a brave, righteous savior—the only person wise enough to see through the monster’s facade. Isolated in her own prejudice and completely cut off from alternative perspectives, Lu Ning absorbed every word. What had started as tentative curiosity rapidly twisted into an absolute, unshakeable conviction.

During the communal dinners in the secondary residential suite, the contrast between the two worlds could not have been more striking.

The dining room was warm and full of life. Soft overhead lamps illuminated the long composite table where Lu Feng’s squad members ate heartily alongside everyone else.

The soldiers laughed and swapped stories of their travels across the wasteland, thoroughly enjoying the seasoned, thick stews and the rare luxury of hot flatbreads. Han Zheng sat near the head of the table next to Lin Qing, the two of them engaged in low conversations regarding supply logistics, fuel consumption ratios, and route contingencies for the upcoming mission.

Across the table, Han Ye sat quietly, his small hands holding his wooden spoon with steady precision.

Han Ye did not share his father’s relaxed, optimistic assumptions regarding Lu Ning. He had seen safe havens collapse from the inside too many times to ignore subtle warnings.

Over three consecutive dinners, Han Ye silently tracked Lu Ning’s every movement. He watched her posture, her tight-lipped silence, and above all, her eyes. Whenever Lu Ning looked at Lin Qing, her expression no longer showed mere awkwardness; it was consuming itself with a deep, dark, and suppressed hatred.

To Han Ye, unchecked hatred inside a closed sanctuary was a lethal threat. It mattered little to him that she was Captain Lu Feng’s biological sister or an unskilled civilian. An unpredictable, emotional variable inside their safe house was an operational risk that required close surveillance.

Quietly, without drawing a single glance from the adults around him, Han Ye began extending subtle strands of his shadows across the stone floorboards of the residential wing. He anchored these dark, intangible threads along the thresholds and doorframes, creating imperceptible spatial tripwires that would vibrate directly within his mind if anyone stepped across them under the cover of night.

On the third night, during dinner, the tension coiled inside Lu Ning finally reached a critical breaking point.

Han Ye sat chewing his food with methodical quietness, his sharp, dark eyes fixed entirely on her from across the table. Lu Ning was practically trembling with nervous energy.

Her skin was unusually pale, her hands fidgeted endlessly with her eating utensils, and she barely touched the food on her plate. Throughout the meal, her eyes kept darting nervously toward the corner table where Dr. Zhou had draped her white medical coat—specifically toward the high-level security keycard peeking out from its chest pocket.

’She is going to make her move tonight,’ Han Ye thought coldly, his fingers tightening slightly around his wooden spoon. He didn’t what she had planned but he needed to stop it.

When the meal concluded, the base gradually settled into its silent nighttime routine. The bright overhead lighting dimmed throughout the corridors, replaced by the soft, nocturnal glow of the emergency lamps. The occupants retired to their respective rooms, and the soft hum of ventilation was the only sound echoing through the halls.

Hours crept by in complete darkness. The secondary residential suite fell entirely silent.

In his small cot, Han Ye lay motionless with his eyes open, staring at the ceiling. Near midnight, a sharp, microscopic pulse rippled through his awareness—a shadow thread anchored along the outer threshold of the residential wing had been severed by a soft, hurried footstep.

Han Ye sat up instantly, moving without making a sound. He glided off his cot like a ghost, his small feet making zero noise against the cold floor. Having long since memorized the digital keypad sequence by observing the adults enter and exit the wing, the five-year-old tapped the bypass code, eased the heavy door open, and stepped out into the dim blue corridor.

He initially planned to cut directly across toward the primary residential suite to intercept her before she could cause trouble, but the moment he reached the main junction, his shadow power twitched aggressively.

A sharp, dark vibration hummed through the floorboards coming from deep within the lower sector—a restricted level where no one had any legitimate business being at midnight. Someone had stepped squarely onto one of his anchored shadow marks right at the top of the level stairwell.

Han Ye’s expression hardened into a cold, ruthless mask. His shadow power surged subtly beneath his feet, wrapping tightly around the soles of his shoes to absorb all friction and vibration. Moving in complete silence, he glided down the metallic stairwell toward the lower sector.

Down in the lower corridor, the air was icy and dead quiet. The low-voltage emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows against the damp concrete walls.

Han Ye rounded the final corner, blending seamlessly into the deep darkness of an arched, recessed doorway just twenty paces from the isolation cells.

Standing directly in front of Lin Tao’s heavy door was Lu Ning. Her hands were shaking violently, her chest heaving as she swallowed hard against her panic. Clutched tightly in her trembling right hand was Dr. Zhou’s stolen access keycard, which she had successfully swiped from the medical wing after lights-out.

Inside the cell, Lin Tao was pressed flat against the reinforced glass, his eyes wide with manic anticipation as he whispered frantically through the door.

”Quickly! Press it against the scanner!” Lin Tao hissed, his voice raspy with desperate encouragement. ”Do it now before the guard rotation comes back down!”

Lu Ning bit her lip so hard a faint trace of blood appeared, her heart hammering against her ribs like a wild animal. Driven by a mix of fear, righteousness, and complete brainwashing, she raised the stolen card with a trembling hand and pressed it flat against the digital scanner beside the frame.

BEEP.

A sharp, high-pitched electronic chime shattered the quiet of the hallway. The indicator light above the door frame flashed instantly from solid red to a bright, glowing green.

CLACK.

The heavy magnetic lock disengaged with a loud, metallic thud, and the thick steel door began to slowly swing outward.

From the shadows down the hall, Han Ye’s eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits as his shadow power coiled beneath his feet like a strike-ready serpent, ready to end the threat the moment Lin Tao took a single step out of that cell.
