Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The quiet hum of the subterranean command center was punctuated only by the soft glow of the central strategic map display. By eight in the morning, the core leadership team of the research center had gathered around the main terminal: Lin Qing, Han Zheng, Captain Lu Feng, Lieutenant Chen, and Dr. Zhou.

The air inside the concrete chamber was crisp, carrying the sterile scent of ozone and air filtration units, but the atmosphere among the officers was heavy with unspoken gravity.

Dr. Zhou tapped a series of commands into her tablet, bringing up the encrypted satellite telemetry directly onto the central overhead monitor. Her voice was significantly more composed than it had been during the midnight discovery in the medical bay, though her hands still adjusted her thick reading glasses with nervous, repetitive frequency.

”The thermal imaging rendered over the last six hours shows a rapid, unprecedented thinning of the atmospheric cloud layer across the entire northern basin,” Dr. Zhou explained, using a stylus to point toward shifting red and yellow color bands spreading across the continental map. ”Barometric pressure is dropping precipitously, and surface temperatures are projected to climb steadily over the next two weeks. The deep freeze that has locked the surface in stasis is breaking months ahead of our earliest climate models.”

Lu Feng leaned forward over the console, his hands resting heavily on the edge as his dark brows drew into a tight, severe line. ”On paper, a thaw sounds like the one thing every survivor has been praying for. But out here in the wilderness... the cold was the only barrier holding the infected in check.”

”Exactly,” Lin Qing said, her voice smooth, grounded, and carrying an absolute, unquestioned authority that drew every eye in the room to her. ”The extreme sub-zero temperatures didn’t destroy the zombie horde, nor did it wipe out the mutated beasts. It merely flash-froze them. When the ice melts and the ground softens, we won’t be greeted by a peaceful spring. We will be facing tens of thousands of starving, hyper-evolved infected waking up from cryo-stasis all at once.”

She reached out, her fingers tapping the screen to clear the thermal map and replace it with the structural blueprints of the underground base and its surrounding perimeter walls.

”Because of this shift, we are altering our primary operational strategy immediately,” Lin Qing announced, her clear eyes sweeping across the gathered officers. ”Our first priority is base fortification. Lieutenant Chen, I want every primary and secondary blast gate reinforced with heavy steel plating. Double-check the hydraulic pressure seals on the subterranean air intakes, and ensure our perimeter turrets are fully calibrated and loaded.”

”Understood,” Lieutenant Chen replied, taking notes on a small pad.

”Our second priority is aggressive supply acquisition,” Lin Qing continued, tapping a regional map highlighting nearby abandoned military staging grounds and industrial warehouses. ”We have a narrow, critical window while the roads are still packed with frozen snow. I want heavily armed details dispatched immediately to haul in every available crate of grain, preserved rations, diesel fuel, and medical inventory before the wilderness becomes a treacherous sea of mud and hungry mutants.”

Lu Feng nodded firmly, fully endorsing the strategic pivot. ”My men can handle the perimeter scouting details and provide heavy armor escorts for the transport trucks.”

”Good,” Lin Qing said, offering a crisp nod. ”Chen, take these deployment orders and brief the rest of the main squad. I want the first supply convoy rolling out through the blast doors by noon.”

”Yes, Commander,” Lieutenant Chen said, standing at attention before departing the command center alongside Lu Feng and Dr. Zhou, their hurried footsteps echoing down the corridor.

Upstairs in the upper utility quarters, the atmosphere was far removed from the high-level planning of the command deck.

Lu Ning stood over a deep concrete utility sink, violently scrubbing a heavy stainless-steel supply crate with a stiff wire brush. Cold water splashed over the rim, soaking the sleeves of her gray jumpsuit. Her knuckles were raw and red from the freezing tap water, and thin strands of dark hair stuck to her sweaty forehead.

With Dr. Zhou busy attending the strategic briefing with the leadership team, Lu Ning had been left behind to handle the tedious, back-breaking maintenance work required to prepare storage containers for the upcoming supply runs.

There was no one actively watching her but, the silent, glossy black lenses of two ceiling-mounted security cameras turned slowly in the upper corners of the room, their red recording indicators blinking in rhythmic, unblinking surveillance.

Lu Ning slammed the wire brush against the rim of the tub with a sharp, metallic ’CLANG’, her chest heaving with bitter, suffocating resentment.

”Cold-hearted, arrogant bitch...” Lu Ning muttered under her breath, glaring up at the nearest camera lens with undisguised hatred before returning to her scrubbing with vicious, desperate intensity.

Having grown up sheltered under Lu Feng’s protective wing, Lu Ning had breezed through the terrifying early weeks of the post-apocalyptic collapse without ever having to do real manual labor.

She had been catered to, protected, and allowed to maintain her delicate, refined self-image while others bled to secure her safety. Even when Lu Feng firmly agreed that assigning her daily chores around the research center was essential for her character and survival discipline, Lu Ning loathed every single second of it.

To her distorted, self-righteous perspective, Lin Qing was nothing more than a ruthless, unfeeling tyrant who took pleasure in humiliating others.

’So what if Lin Tao lied about a few things?’ Lu Ning thought bitterly, her teeth grinding together as she scraped rust off the metal handles. ’Lin Qing is still a heartless monster. She treats people like disposable tools, throws her authority around, and acts as if she owns the entire world just because she can wield a gun.’

Lu Ning’s hands trembled with suppressed rage as she dipped the brush back into the soapy water. It sickened her to her very core that a man as capable, noble, disciplined, and powerful as Han Zheng was tied to someone as cold, calculating, and unfeeling as Lin Qing.

In Lu Ning’s eyes, Lin Qing didn’t deserve a single fraction of the devotion, respect, or loyalty she received from the squad—and it burned Lu Ning from the inside out.

Down in the quiet sanctuary of the primary command center, the doors slid shut with a deep, echoing thud, isolating the room from the rest of the facility and leaving only Lin Qing and Han Zheng inside.

Lin Qing walked over to a secondary control console, her fingers skimming across the touch interface to pull up an encrypted security file she had recorded.

”There is one more matter we need to address before we initiate base-wide fortification protocols,” Lin Qing said, her tone dropping into a low, serious register as she turned to face him.

Han Zheng crossed his arms over his chest, his dark, sharp eyes fixing intently on her face. ”What is it?”

”A few nights ago, Lu Ning snuck down to the lower sector,” Lin Qing revealed, her expression grave. ”She attempted to free Lin Tao.”

Han Zheng’s shoulders went rigid in an instant. A sharp flicker of anger flitted across his hardened features, accompanied by a look of surprise. His dark eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits.

”She tried to free Lin Tao?” Han Zheng’s voice dropped an octave, turning deadly cold. ”Is she completely out of her mind? Lin Tao is a security threat to this entire base—cousin or not. If he had been released, he could have compromised the power grid, sabotaged the air filtration systems, or ambushed the night guards.”

”She didn’t succeed,” Lin Qing clarified smoothly, keeping her voice steady to anchor his rising temper. ”She was caught in time and I also made it abundantly clear what the consequences would be if she ever stepped out of line again.”

Han Zheng exhaled heavily through his nose, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles along his cheekbones stood out in sharp relief.

”I’m going to speak to Lu Feng directly about this,” Han Zheng stated firmly, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation. ”I don’t care that she is his biological sister—she cannot be permitted to pull a reckless, life-threatening stunt like that ever again. Next time she compromises base security, I won’t allow her to walk away with mere maintenance chores.”

”We will inform Lu Feng together,” Lin Qing agreed calmly. ”But that leaves us with the practical issue of the three captives currently occupying our rooms and consuming daily rations: Lin Tao, Dr. Morse and Dr. Chen Wei .”

Han Zheng walked over to the central display, his military mindset taking over as his initial anger cooled into sharp, pragmatic focus. He looked down at the subterranean structural maps, analyzing the sheer volume of physical labor required to fortify the base before the spring thaw arrived.

”Disposing of them right now or letting them sit idle in cell space is a complete waste of valuable resources,” Han Zheng said, his tone analytical and cold. ”We need every pair of hands we can leverage for the upcoming fortification phase.”

He gestured to the lower engineering schematics on the monitor screen. ”The two scientists possess advanced technical knowledge regarding heavy machinery and electrical grids. We put them to work under direct, armed supervision to calibrate the secondary power distribution channels and reinforce the subterranean air filtration schematics. They want to eat? They earn their keep.”

Lin Qing leaned her hands against the edge of the console, listening closely. ”And Lin Tao?”

Han Zheng’s eyes turned hard as flint. ”Lin Tao has no technical skills, but he has physical strength. He gets assigned to the hazardous, heavy labor. Hauling concrete blocks, clearing debris from the lower drainage shafts, and digging outer trench reinforcements along the exterior perimeter wall in the freezing cold.”

Lin Qing considered the proposal for a brief moment before nodding in firm agreement. ”That is the most efficient use of our assets. We put them to work, but we maintain strict control—round-the-clock camera monitoring and dual-armed guard details whenever they step outside their rooms.”

She turned slightly, her gaze drifting away from the structural schematics toward the wide topographic map of the surrounding mountain valley. The digital display highlighted the sprawling geography—the winding mountain passes, frozen riverbeds, and scattered rural settlements they had navigated weeks ago during their arduous journey across the wasteland.

Her mind wandered back to the weary soldiers, the struggling survivor convoys, and the impoverished villagers they had encountered along the road. People living in flimsy compounds, makeshift shelters, and unfortified hamlets without the protection of concrete or blast doors.

”When this thaw comes...” Lin Qing murmured softly, her clear eyes fixed on the distant valley markers. ”The settlements outside aren’t going to have blast doors, automated turrets, or deep bunkers to hide in.”

Han Zheng stepped up beside her, his tall, solid frame providing a quiet, unwavering presence right at her shoulder. They stood together in silence, looking over the vast map of the valley, fully aware that the clock ticking above their heads was running out fast—and the world outside was about to wake up.
