Chapter 685: Chapter 97: The 3 Great Illusions of Life: I Can Do It

PS: (Title error, this is Chapter seventy-nine, not ninety-seven.)

Su Xiao walked to an equipment enhancement machine and placed his hand on the sensor.

[Welcome to Equipment Strengthening Machine No.182, User’s Paradise coin balance: 201206 points.]

Su Xiao took out Dragon Slash. Considering the current limited amount of Paradise coins, enhancing the weapon yields the greatest benefit first.

As Su Xiao operated the machine, a tray popped out from the equipment enhancement machine.

Hiss—

White steam spurted out from the equipment enhancement machine. Su Xiao was already used to this. It’s a normal occurrence.

Placing Dragon Slash on the tray, Su Xiao also took out a gemstone to place on it.

[Phantom Demon Stone]

Quality: Dark Purple

Type: Rare Material

Effect: Can prevent one instance of enhancement failure penalty; if the enhancement succeeds, the Phantom Demon Stone will not be consumed.

Rating: 260

Description: A magical crystal stone from the Void, mostly used to protect equipment during enhancement.

...

This is why Su Xiao dares to visit the Equipment Strengthening Hall multiple times. He’s confident enough to enhance Dragon Slash; he’s here to increase his strength, not to seek excitement.

The tray on the equipment enhancement machine retracted, and a prompt appeared.

[Equipment inspection in progress... Inspection complete, each enhancement of Dragon Slash (Light Gold) costs 31000 points of Paradise coin.]

Su Xiao operated the equipment enhancement machine with a blank expression.

[Reinspection according to instructions in progress... Inspection complete, each enhancement of Dragon Slash (Light Gold) costs 31000 points of Paradise coin.]

Enhancing once costs 31000 Paradise coins, making Su Xiao somewhat ’despairing’ as he closed his eyes. Failing once would mean losing 31000 Paradise coins, and that’s with the Phantom Demon Stone’s protection.

If the enhancement level of +5 or above fails, the enhancement level resets. Failure at +7 has a 70% chance to reset the enhancement level and a 30% chance to shatter the equipment. If enhancement +10 fails, the equipment will definitely shatter.

As for above +10, each level is like being between heaven and hell. Success leads to heaven with a considerable boost in equipment attributes, enhancing strength. Failure leads you to hell, as evidenced by the person kneeling dozens of meters away.

[Proceed with this enhancement?]

”Enhance.”

[Enhancement started, please wait five minutes,]

Rumble...

The equipment enhancement machine started operating, engaging in intricate operations with intermittent sizzling electrical sounds, the momentum was astonishing.

The five minutes passed quickly, and the equipment enhancement machine gradually ceased its operation.

Hiss—

A puff of scorching steam spurted out, and a prompt appeared.

[Dragon Slash (Light Gold) +9 success, continue enhancement?]

Though the enhancement +9 succeeded, Su Xiao wouldn’t stop here. There are several significant levels in enhancement, where the equipment gains additional attributes or strengthens existing attributes once reaching these levels, such as +5, +8, and +10.

Su Xiao’s goal is to enhance Dragon Slash to +10, or even beyond +10, to see how much the ability ’Cut Iron Like Mud (Passive)’ of a Dark Purple 260 rating weapon can be enhanced.

”Continue enhancement.”

The equipment enhancement machine resumed operation, thundering loudly.

The required five minutes for enhancement began to feel long, not just for Su Xiao but also for the other Contractors by the enhancement machines nearby. One rather goofy Contractor was even doing radio calisthenics while waiting. Is this the ’legendary’ metaphysical enhancement?

Su Xiao lit a cigarette. His body no longer craves cigarettes or the like; it’s just a habit to keep him calm.

Puff—

Scorching steam sprayed out from the equipment enhancement machine this time with more volume than before. Su Xiao noticed that the higher the enhancement level, the more steam was emitted from the machine and the higher the heat.

[Dragon Slash (Light Gold) +10 success! Continue enhancement?]

Dragon Slash returned to its previous enhancement level, and ’Cut Iron Like Mud (Passive)’ should see changes.

Su Xiao took a deep breath, hesitating whether to continue enhancing.

Given the current situation, Dragon Slash will remain at the Light Gold quality for a long time. If that’s the case, Dragon Slash needs to be as strong as possible to handle the subsequent Derivative Worlds.

Moreover, Su Xiao plans to activate the Talent Awakening Task in the next Derivative World, and the sooner this task is completed, the easier it will be.

”Continue... enhancement.”

[Enhancement started, please wait ten minutes,]

Following Su Xiao’s command, the equipment enhancement machine began operating. This time it was different from the previous enhancements; the momentum was even greater, and it took longer.

Su Xiao stood silently smoking in front of the equipment enhancement machine. Although the success rate of this enhancement was not high, the risk was manageable. At most, he would lose one Phantom Demon Stone and 31000 Paradise coins. Compared to the potential benefits, the risk was worthwhile.

Taking a deep breath, Su Xiao smiled slightly. Given the low risk, there’s no need for him to be nervous.

If there were significant risks, he wouldn’t gamble with his saber. He’d prefer to pay a higher price to improve the quality of Dragon Slash rather than enhance it.

After the cigarette in Su Xiao’s hand burned out, the equipment enhancement machine gradually came to a halt.

[Dragon Slash (Light Gold) +11 success! Continue enhancement?]

Su Xiao clenched his fist, his eyes seemingly shining. His research indicated several major enhancement grades: +5, +8, +10, +12.

Each major level upgrade is tempting, and the higher the enhancement level, the greater the gain. If Dragon Slash could be enhanced to +12, it would completely rival some low-rated Golden Quality Equipment, or perhaps even better?

”Check the success rate of enhancement.”

[Inspecting Hunter permissions...]

[Permission granted. Current enhancement success rate: 21%.]

Seeing this success rate, Su Xiao’s expression didn’t look great. A 21% success rate seemed high but wasn’t truly comforting.

This relates to a probability issue. If it were a hundred-trigger probability, then 21% would be high, but for a single attempt, 21% is roughly one fifth, with the remaining four fifths capable of trapping most people.

”The loss of failure is within an acceptable range. Continue enhancement.”

[Enhancement started, please wait fifteen minutes,]

The enhancement time began to increase. Logically speaking, Su Xiao should be nervous now, but surprisingly, he felt calm due to his confidence, not in his luck being good, but in it being bad.

Just earlier, he had opened over a hundred treasure chests containing green, blue, dark purple, and gold items, yet only three times did they flash, and those were low-level treasure chests.

Based on Su Xiao’s observations over time, he might often encounter misfortune, but overall, his luck is balanced.

After having been this unlucky previously, he couldn’t believe he’d continue to be so. With the consecutive success of three enhancements, he began to gain a mysterious confidence.

Not far from Su Xiao, a girl wearing a small bear ear hat was staring intently at her enhancement machine. Upon closer inspection, she was actually wearing pajamas and slippers.

”It has to succeed. I’m begging you, succeed, succeed...”

The girl’s eyes were closed tight, hands clasped in prayer, mumbling to herself. This was the normal posture for a Contractor during enhancement, unlike Su Xiao, who stood expressionlessly before the equipment enhancement machine, a rarity.

The girl was enhancing a blue necklace from +5 to +6. It’s important to note that an enhancement failure at +6 would reset the enhancement level.

While the girl prayed, a blast of scorching steam erupted beside her, its range exaggerated.

The girl shielded her fair hands in front of her face. As the steam blew, her cloak fluttered, and she glimpsed a silhouette through the steam. The windbreaker the figure wore billowed dramatically in the steam.
