Chapter 653: Chapter 47: Assassin

After dinner, Su Xiao leaned back on the streetside table and chair, watching the bustling crowd in front of him, with Bubu Wang beside him, still with cream on his mouth.

It turned out that reasoning with this silly dog was clearly ineffective, but a slipper worked wonders.

Just as Su Xiao was considering where to go for a stroll next, Black Mary’s phone rang in her arms.

”Hello, no, let me check.”

Black Mary repeatedly refused the caller several times.

”Mister Bai Ye, it’s Old Head Brent, he’d like to invite us over.”

Black Mary covered the phone with her hand, leaned over, and from Su Xiao’s angle, he could see a large expanse of fair skin at her collar.

”What’s it about?”

”Old Head has hired a batch of assassins at a high price and wants you to meet them. I think they want you to go to make an impression. Should I refuse?”

”Agree to it.”

”Yes.”

After Black Mary said a few words, she hung up the phone.

”Earlier than expected...”

”What?”

Black Mary looked at Su Xiao in confusion.

”Nothing.”

The two drove towards the new auction venue, which wasn’t far from the original auction site, just three blocks away.

In front of the new auction venue, various colored flowers were arranged, some tied into wreaths placed at the entrance, with a few gang members looking anxious nearby.

When they drove up and Su Xiao saw those ”wreaths,” he was stunned for a moment. The first thought in his mind was, who died?

”Who died?”

”Huh?”

Black Mary looked a bit bewildered, then said, ”Is there a bloody smell? As expected of Mister Bai Ye, I’ll have them check the surroundings immediately.”

Black Mary made a move to get out of the car.

”Wait.”

Su Xiao stopped Black Mary, slightly embarrassed, and cleared his throat. Those ”wreaths” should be a way to celebrate in the Hunter World, similar to the opening celebration of a store.

Sending wreaths for a store opening, no matter how Su Xiao thought about it, it felt awkward.

”Your customs here are really unique.”

Su Xiao got out of the car, leaving behind a bewildered Black Mary.

The presence of these wreaths indicated that the new auction’s start wasn’t going smoothly. The auction even required a celebration to attract guests, whereas past auctions didn’t need such methods; guests would come on their own.

Black Mary noticed Su Xiao’s doubt and started explaining the events of the morning.

After the auction venue was flattened once, most guests were put off by the Yukexin Auction, unwilling to risk their lives for an auction.

On the morning of the auction’s opening, the place was deserted, not even a single curious onlooker. Merchants and residents within a few hundred meters of the venue fled, as if considering the auction venue a Plague God.

This truly infuriated the Ten Old Man, but even though they were a gang, they couldn’t just force guests to attend the auction at gunpoint.

For the sake of their reputation, the Ten Old Man had no choice but to organize an unnecessary opening ceremony and summon their gang members to boost the atmosphere. This order terrified their affiliated gangs under the Ten Old Men’s power, who also didn’t want to attend the auction.

At 8 o’clock that morning, when the Ten Old Men found out the auction still had few attendees, even their own gang members were reluctant to come. Furious, the Old Men ordered that anyone who dared not to attend would be expelled from the gang.

Then, by ten in the morning, which was now.

Due to the previous incidents, the current scene ensued. Wreaths lined up the entrance to the auction venue, alongside some gang members looking tense with bulging waists.

After listening to Black Mary’s account, Su Xiao roughly understood the situation.

”So, right now in the auction house, besides the gang members, there are no other forces present?”

”Yes, no one dares to come, especially after the last time...”

Black Mary recalled, feeling a little apprehensive, having also been present at the last auction.

”It’s better if no one participates, but given how long the Ten Old Man have been in the underworld, there will definitely be people attending when the auction starts tonight.”

Whether people attended the auction wasn’t Su Xiao’s concern, as long as it could open smoothly.

Upon entering the auction venue, this building covered a large area, larger than the previous auction venue.

Inside the auction house were only gang members, with not a single outsider in sight. Su Xiao took the elevator from the first floor, and it stopped at the sixth floor.

”The assassins hired are already here, just waiting for your arrival.”

Black Mary led the way ahead.

...

At this time, in a reception room on the sixth floor, a bald, short, fat man with small round sunglasses and a cigar in his mouth was scrutinizing the assassins in the room.

The bald fat man was called Cheap Ji, not his real name, but a nickname given after mingling in the gang, and gradually everyone called him that.

Cheap Ji was the direct subordinate leader of the Ten Old Men’s power, so it was only natural for him to receive these assassins. Cheap Ji was also happy to engage in such risk-free yet visible tasks.

Though his character was questionable, Cheap Ji was a smart man. In the original story, while all the Ten Old Men died, Cheap Ji still lived freely. Of course, it was related to his poor strength; no one would purposely go to kill him.

”1.2.3.4...Looks like everyone is here.”

Cheap Ji counted on his fingers, recalling the number of assassins hired, while a subordinate behind him leaned over and replied, ”Not all are here for now.”

”Isn’t the assassination group supposed to be eight people?”

”Seems like the Nostella Family is bringing someone over.”

Hearing about the Nostella Family, Cheap Ji was somewhat displeased, with a feeling of jealousy spreading in his heart.

”Tch, that guy who only relies on divination tricks.”

Though he said this, Cheap Ji was envious, wishing for a daughter like that.

As soon as his words fell, the door was pushed open.

Rico Nosra and Kurapika walked into the room; Rico Nosra was the clan leader of the ’Nostella Family’, and the father of the Divination Girl Little hum.

The two entered the room without speaking, merely standing by the side.

”Finally, everyone is here. The commission is to eliminate the Phantom Troupe. The auction will re-open tonight; they might show up. If spotted, kill them on sight.”

Cheap Ji scanned the assassins present, each of whom was dressed differently. To the gang, these were all experts.

This commission was actually more protective than an assassination, waiting inside the auction venue for the troupe to come looking for trouble. However, since the people present were assassins, explicitly stating that they were to ensure the auction proceeded smoothly might insult these killers.

”As a team, with our goals aligned, let’s first decide on our communication code names, shall we?”

An assassin spoke, someone whose appearance was utterly average, the kind who would never stand out in a crowd.

”Why not use colors for our code names? I’ll be Blue.”

An assassin wearing a vest chimed in.

”I’ll be Red.”

”Black.”

As several assassins declared their colors, two assassins who had been standing there the whole time spoke up.

”This feels like child’s play.”

An elderly man, with white hair and a long white mustache, spoke up. The old man had his hands behind his back, with a long strip of cloth hanging on his chest that read ’Active Service’.
