Chapter 540: Chapter 28: Old Haunts

Two days later, in the coastal region of the Land of Water, a large white bird flew across the sky.

Su Xiao arrived in the Land of Water on Deidara’s clay bird. It only took two days from the River Country to the Land of Water, including the time for rest along the way.

Su Xiao wasn’t clear on who commissioned this mission. The task was simple: incite internal conflict in the Land of Water.

If one wants to provoke internal conflict in the Land of Water, then the Hidden Mist Village is an inevitable link.

To be precise, the main target of the three was the Hidden Mist Village. Only by causing turmoil within the Hidden Mist Village would the Land of Water continue its internal conflict.

Su Xiao suggested directly assassinating the Fifth Mizukage, Mei Terumi, but Sasori opposed this. In his view, the risk of assassinating the Mizukage was too high, and they could achieve the same result through other methods. Deidara reserved his opinion; he was only responsible for the explosions. His biggest wish at the moment was to seek revenge against Itachi Uchiha.

The Akatsuki Organization formed two or three-member teams mainly for the following reasons: to prevent unilateral action, as there were no leaders within the teams; decisions had to be discussed first.

Second, members could assist each other, increasing the success rate of missions.

Third, to supervise each other and prevent spies from leaking information about Akatsuki, as there were many rogue ninjas within the organization.

Currently, the three team members had differing opinions. Su Xiao’s suggestion to assassinate Mei Terumi was not simply out of revenge; it was indeed the fastest way to incite internal conflict in the Land of Water.

...

The three arrived in the Land of Water by evening. There were many fishermen by the shore who, despite their weary expressions, had smiles on their faces, indicating a good day’s catch.

On a wooden box at the dock, Su Xiao sat with a skewer of grilled fish in his hand, occasionally tearing off a piece to give to Bubu Wang or to eat himself.

”Sasori, since you disagree with my opinion, propose a plan.”

Although Sasori rejected Su Xiao’s plan, he didn’t appear displeased. From the beginning, he knew that these members of the Akatsuki Organization wouldn’t follow his orders, nor did he expect to command them.

Sasori spoke from within the Scarlet Stream Tiger.

”According to the information from the client, the Hidden Mist Village is temporarily divided into two factions: the Peacemaker Faction and the Radical Faction. We can reduce the power of the Peacemaker Faction, allowing the Radical Faction to grow stronger. As for the Fifth Mizukage, we’ll deal with her as the situation warrants.”

Su Xiao didn’t interrupt Sasori. After he finished speaking, Su Xiao spoke up.

”Are you sure this is the information from the client? Was it relayed by the Leader or by Konan?”

Su Xiao stopped chewing the grilled fish.

”It was Konan, what’s wrong?”

Sasori noticed Su Xiao’s abnormality.

”You should know a bit about my enmity with the Fifth Mizukage, right?”

”I know a bit; she sent people to hunt you down.”

Su Xiao pondered, then spoke after some thought: ”Now I’m starting to doubt whether Konan is trustworthy. If she is trustworthy...”

Even though Su Xiao knew Konan wouldn’t betray Akatsuki, he still said it.

”So far, Konan is trustworthy.”

Deidara also looked at Su Xiao, knowing he had something to say.

”If Konan is trustworthy, then we should kill the client.”

Su Xiao’s words were shocking, leaving not only Deidara but also Sasori somewhat surprised.

”Why?”

”Currently, there’s no distinction between a Peacemaker Faction and a Radical Faction in the Hidden Mist Village. The leaders of the former Radical Faction have largely died, many at my own hands.”

”Hmm?”

Deidara and Sasori both grew alert.

”First, very few people know I’ve joined Akatsuki. Coincidentally, although I didn’t stay long in the Hidden Mist Village, I understand the situation well. That woman, Mei Terumi, whom I’ve interacted with, would never allow a Radical Faction to exist upon taking power. The higher-ups among the Mist Ninja are aware of this, and we can confirm it.”

”You mean, the client has an issue?”

Sasori immediately grasped Su Xiao’s implication.

”Yes, a significant issue. The client provided false information, perhaps not just to incite internal conflict but to pit Akatsuki and the Hidden Mist Village against each other, allowing the client to profit from it.”

Sasori and Deidara bowed their heads in contemplation; before accepting any commission, they had to consider it thoroughly.

While Akatsuki could help eliminate rivals for other forces, they wouldn’t tolerate being used.

”Of course, this is my speculation, based on linking the information provided by the client with the current situation in the Hidden Mist Village. My earlier suggestion to assassinate the Fifth Mizukage was the quickest way to incite internal conflict. According to the client’s information, the Fifth Mizukage is the leader of the Peacemaker Faction, right?”

”Exactly.”

Sasori confirmed, and the three quickly realized a possibility. Deidara, who hadn’t spoken much, said: ”What’s the time limit for the commission? How much time do we have left to carry this out?”

”Three days left.”

This was detailed information Sasori obtained from Konan.

”Three days, the time is tight, and the commission fee isn’t low. The Leader previously said this matter is tricky.”

”It’s many times the commission for stopping the Daimyo of the River Country; after all, this is about inciting a country’s internal war.”

The three of them remained silent, and after a long while, Deidara broke the stillness.

”Should we capture a Mist Ninja to gather information?”

”That’s possible.”

”Good suggestion.”

The three achieved consensus. As for the task, they would address it after understanding the situation.

The Akatsuki Organization often accepted war tasks, many of which contained numerous traps.

”Who will capture a Mist Ninja? At least capture a Jonin. Anyway, I can’t do it.”

Deidara wasn’t incapable of capturing a Jonin, but the noise from his battles was too loud.

”I’ll go.”

Sasori spoke, and the three quickly headed toward the Hidden Mist Village, moving cautiously along the way to avoid being discovered by Mist Ninja.

The situation was currently unclear. If something went wrong, their target wouldn’t be the Hidden Mist Village but rather the client. This is Akatsuki.

That night, Su Xiao and Deidara waited in an inn in a village near the Hidden Mist Village, while Sasori went out under the darkness.

Shortly after Sasori left, Deidara changed out of his Akatsuki uniform into regular clothes, seemingly also planning to go out.

”Bai Ye, I’m heading out first.”

Su Xiao was a bit surprised.

”What for?”

”Ahem, got some personal matters to take care of. Don’t tell Sasori I went out, hm.”

Saying this, Deidara got up and headed for the inn’s exit.

”Unexpected, you have a sweetheart in the Land of Water.”

Deidara paused, giving Su Xiao a knowing look that all men understand.

”Don’t expose your identity.”

”Rest assured, she only knows I’m a Clay Doll Master.”

With that, Deidara left the inn. The young man was off to see a girl. Su Xiao had wondered earlier how Deidara knew there was a village nearby, but it seemed the girls of the Land of Water were indeed charming enough to catch Deidara’s interest.

In the inn’s room, only Su Xiao remained, or rather, Su Xiao, along with Bubu Wang, two ’single dogs’.

Bubu Wang looked at Su Xiao, its gaze clearly saying: ’Master, aren’t you going to find a girl?’

Su Xiao lit a cigarette, gazing out the window.

”If by chance I run into a female ninja, it would end very badly.”

Sometimes Su Xiao couldn’t help but wonder if he was the legendary lone star of disaster, bringing death to those associated with him, like his two sets of parents, although one set was a fraud.

Life and death have their fates; wealth and honor rest with heaven. Su Xiao chose not to dwell on these matters. He only needed to live well today; as for the future, he would leave it to fate.

He took out a card the size of a bank card, metallic and covered with red patterns on its surface.

This was a Scarlet Card, belonging to a Mage.

”This is far more interesting than finding a girl—it’s an opportunity to become stronger. What’s with that look? My luck’s been good lately.”

Bubu Wang rolled its eyes.

PS: (A friend invited me for drinks. I only got back at six in the evening, and now I’m a bit dizzy, so I’ll take a nap. Today, let’s consider it a holiday, with only two updates.)
