Chapter 690: Chapter 689: Misfortunes Never Come Singly

The news of SABER’s elimination quickly spread among both the Red and Black Faction; nearly every MASTER and Servant who heard were surprised and even speechless for a moment.

While it was normal to expect losses after the fight started with the gathering of the Servants on the Mage’s Association’s side, no one anticipated that the first to be eliminated would be SABER, and by none other than ASSASSIN.

Of course, theoretically, SABER was not invincible and, despite possessing the strongest Attributes among all Servants, could be defeated for various reasons. Yet, to die at the hands of ASSASSIN was still somewhat unbelievable.

Even though most people guessed that ASSASSIN must have defeated SABER by killing SABER’s MASTER, it was still surprising. In the Holy Grail War, except for the few Servants possessing the Class Skill of ”Independent Action,” any Servant would be doomed once they lost contact with their Master. Thus, protecting the MASTER was crucial for a Servant, and naturally, SABER had to be aware of this, but still, ASSASSIN managed to launch a successful sneak attack...

”I never saw it coming, that that child possessed such immense power.”

Looking out the window, Fiore couldn’t help but reflect, remembering when she had met Mr. Fang Zheng’s ASSASSIN before — a very adorable girl. What Fiore hadn’t anticipated was her possessing such power.

But, not everyone shared her view.

”MASTER, I have something to say.”

”What is it, Chiron?”

Hearing the voice by her side, Fiore put down her teacup and looked toward the Servant standing beside her— that was the ARCHER she had summoned, Chiron.

He was a Sage of the Centaurs, renowned in Greek Mythology, and mentor to many heroes, including Heracles and Achilles, and had once been a complete Divine Spirit. He was also a very kind and wise person. Fiore revered him as both a mentor and a friend and held great respect for this Sage of the Centaur tribe.

”Forgive my impudence, but from what I feel, I don’t think Mr. Fang Zheng’s Servant is Jack the Ripper.”

”What?”

Fiore was momentarily startled by Chiron’s comment.

”Why do you think that?”

”Because of her eyes, the girl had a pair of clear and pure eyes, those of a pure-hearted infant. I am certain that child would never kill anyone with her own hands. Thus, I believe she is not Jack the Ripper, for, in her, I sensed none of the death or shadows associated with the infamous killer from London.”

”...So, Mr. Fang Zheng has been concealing the true information about his Servant? But it is indeed true that the girl possesses the ’Breath Concealment’ Skill...”

”It might also be possible that we are dealing with a Servant named under a non-lethal skill, as an inability to kill is a fatal flaw in the Holy Grail War. Revealing her True Name could easily make her a target.”

”That makes sense...” freēwēbηovel.c૦m

Listening to this, Fiore nodded. In history and mythology, many thieves or mythical rogues were rumored to have a ’no-kill’ doctrine; if that child was indeed one of them, this alone could be her undoing.

”But... if it’s not that child, could it be Mr. Fang Zheng himself?”

”He’s a dangerous man.”

Saying this, Chiron’s expression became serious. But in response to his words, Fiore’s expression turned somewhat ambiguous.

”Dangerous?”

”Ah, I apologize; I didn’t mean he has ulterior motives or harbors any evil—quite the contrary, he reminds me of heroes from my time, or even earlier. Although I’m unaware of what he’s been through, I can see from his eyes that he is a person of strong character who has experienced much. The hurdles and dangers he has faced are unimaginable to us... To speak a bit offensively, when compared to the magicians of this era, who have accepted their fate yet are mostly harmless kittens, he is more like a lion or tiger that has emerged from a primitive jungle, wholly out of their league. Even I would need a bit of courage to stand before him. If I had to say... that little girl rather seems like the Master, while he acts more like a Servant.”

”Is that so?”

Having heard this, Fiore finally understood Chiron’s meaning, and Chiron nodded as well.

”However, no matter how you look at it, the Red Faction having lost SABER must be a huge blow; for them, their actions going forward are likely to be more cautious.”

It turned out that Chiron’s prediction was correct.

”SABER is dead? That’s really not a funny joke.”

Standing inside the Grand Cathedral, the Servants of the Red Faction clearly weren’t as relaxed as before.

After all, since the beginning of the Holy Grail War, they had been gradually falling into a disadvantage, having used up one of LANCER’s Command Seals, and even one of the Three Riders, SABER, had been killed. In such a situation, the circumstances of the Red Faction were quite dire.

Nevertheless, the young Priest standing in the middle still revealed a confident smile.

”Don’t worry, everyone, SABER’s defeat was merely an accident, and we have already devised adequate countermeasures. Of course... to prevent similar incidents from happening again, I believe it is best to hold off on actions to avoid giving the opponents an opportunity. Even though SABER has disappeared, we still have LANCER and RIDER... and our plan is also proceeding smoothly.”

”... Are you sure it’s no problem?”

A girl with green hair and holding a longbow furrowed her brow, eyeing the young Priest warily.

”I think we should meet with the MASTER and then discuss how to handle this problem.”

”There’s no need to worry about that, they are now under effective protection, and it has been proven that their choice was correct. I think none of you wishes to die a pathetic death like SABER.”

Although they did not possess information about Mr. Fang Zheng like the World Tree of a Thousand Realms did, with the help of the Sanctuary Church, the Red Faction had received news that SABER’s MASTER had been killed. From the fatal wound, it was possible to guess that it was very likely that the opponent had eliminated SABER’s MASTER, leading to the loss of Mana source and SABER having to withdraw from the fight.

It must be acknowledged, for a Servant, this was considered the most ignoble way to die.

As such, this time, the Servants of the Red Faction did not further argue against the Priest’s response as before. Indeed, it had been proven that, instead of running around recklessly like SABER and her MASTER and then getting killed, it was more prudent to act as a group.

”Ah...! Fate is truly marvelous!”

Just then, suddenly, a voice rang out, breaking the solemn atmosphere inside the Grand Cathedral. Everyone looked up to see a man, dressed in medieval chic attire, laughing heartily as he walked in.

”It’s unbelievable, as the saying goes, there’s nothing unrelated; though we were companions for merely a few days, we also share a brotherly bond.”

Listening to the man’s somewhat exaggerated speech, the other Servants present displayed slightly peculiar expressions, while the young Priest shook his head.

”Now is not the time to talk about this, CASTER, did something go wrong with BERSERKER?”

”Hmm... A small issue.”

”... A small issue?”

”Yes.”

In response to the Priest’s inquiry, CASTER laughed and nodded.

”After hearing the news of SABER’s exit, BERSERKER seemed quite furious and has already set off towards Tolifas to avenge his comrade!”

”... That’s absolutely terrible...”
