Subject Zero: Faceless

Thorne hadn’t asked yet. Four days on, that fact had become its own piece of information, not a denial, not a delay anyone had bothered explaining, just silence sitting where an answer should have arrived by now. He caught Thorne in the corridor outside orientation on the fourth morning and didn’t bother easing into it.

You said you’d ask.

”I said I’d ask, and I have. Twice.” Thorne didn’t slow his pace. ”The office that issued the denial hasn’t responded to either request yet. Silence, so far.” He stopped at the junction where their corridors split, and for a moment looked like a man choosing his next sentence with more care than the last several. ”I’ll tell you the moment I have something real. That’s still the only promise I’ve got.”

It wasn’t nothing. It also wasn’t anything he could carry to the day ahead as an answer. Institutional silence, he’d learned through a war and every desk it had handed him to since, usually meant someone above the person answering was deciding how much to let through.

He went to the records wing on no real pretext beyond the fact that Mabry’s counter was one of the few places in this building where a question tended to get a real answer instead of a routed one. The corridor there ran past the numbered wing, badge-locked and silent as always, and he noted, as he did most mornings now without deciding to, that the paint on the newest door had finally stopped looking wet.

She was elbow-deep in a filing drawer when he found her, muttering at a folder that wouldn’t sit flush no matter how she angled it, and didn’t look up until he set the slate on her counter.

Busy day.

”Every day’s a busy day when the drawers are older than the building around them.” She shoved the folder home and blew a strand of hair out of her face, then actually looked at him, and something in her expression eased. ”Rook. Good. Give me a real reason to stop fighting furniture for five minutes.”

I have a word I don’t understand. You’ll have handled it more than I have.

”High bar. I’ve handled most of the words in this building at least once.” She said it lightly, riding the small, easy warmth that had sat between them since the evening she’d asked for his name on a scrap of requisition paper rather than pretend she already knew it. She kept that slip folded in her jacket pocket, by her own account, though she’d never once shown it to him again.

He turned the slate to show her the denial, the line he’d read enough times now that they’d stopped looking like language and started looking like a shape. CYCLE INDEX — DIRECTORATE RESTRICTED, ABOVE ASSET-FILE CLEARANCE.

Mabry read it, and something in her face did the thing it had done once before, in this same wing, the first time she’d caught herself treating his file as case-study material instead of a person’s, a small flinch of recognition, arriving a beat before whatever explanation usually followed it.

”That’s just a filing category,” she said, a shade too quickly to be only that. ”Cycle numbers. The old Foundry-recovered material gets sorted by them instead of by subject name, since half of it never had names attached to begin with. It’s routine.”

You’ve filed things under it before.

”Constantly. It’s half of what comes through records that’s older than this Directorate.” She was talking with her hands now, the fluency of someone explaining a thing she genuinely knew well, and that fluency was exactly what let the next part slip out before she’d decided to say it. ”Most of it’s dead paperwork. Closed cycles, archived years back, nobody’s ever going to open them again in our lifetimes. It’s only the open ones that need the double-stamp and the restricted routing, which is honestly the annoying part of the job, because—”

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

She stopped.

He watched her hear it, actually hear it, a full beat after she’d said it, the word arriving back at her too late to take anything with it. Her hands went still on the counter, mid-motion, a stamp hovering an inch above a folder it never came down on. The color in her face didn’t drain so much as go somewhere else entirely, flat and careful.

Open.

”I didn’t— that’s not—” She picked up a stamp she didn’t need and set it back down in the exact spot it had come from. ”I process paperwork. I don’t read what’s behind the number, I just check it against a ledger and route it where the ledger tells me to. That’s all I meant. Open just means administratively active. It doesn’t mean—” She stopped again, and this time didn’t try to finish the sentence.

It doesn’t mean what.

”I need to get back to the drawers.” She said it to the counter rather than to him, already turning half away, her hands finding busywork. ”I shouldn’t have said open. It’s a filing term. It doesn’t mean anything you’d—” She caught the sentence a third time before it finished itself, and didn’t try again.

He could have pushed. A year ago, under a different rank stamped over his own name, he might not have known there was a choice in it. He let the silence sit instead, and watched her not look at him for the length of that silence, her hands moving through drawer after drawer of paper that plainly didn’t need touching.

”I have to finish this before the afternoon delivery,” she said finally, to the middle distance, to the drawer, to anyone in the room who wasn’t him specifically. ”I’m sorry. I really do need to— I have to finish this.”

You don’t owe me an explanation.

”I know.” Her voice had thinned in a register he hadn’t heard from her before, not even the evening she’d asked him, without flinching, what it actually felt like to carry a designation nobody could classify. ”I know I don’t owe you one. That’s not the part I’m stuck on.”

She didn’t say what the part was. He didn’t ask again. He picked the slate back up, tucked it against his hip, and left her to the drawers, carrying nothing out of that room he could bring to Thorne as evidence of anything, no confession, no name, no single sentence that would survive being repeated back in a formal setting.

He thought, on the walk out, about taking it to Thorne anyway, laying the whole exchange out in full and letting Thorne decide what an institution did with a records clerk’s slip of the tongue. He decided against it before he’d reached the end of the corridor. Whatever Mabry had almost said, she’d been frightened enough by the almost-saying that repeating it upward, even carefully, even kindly, felt like the exact kind of thing that could cost her something he had no standing to spend on her behalf.

He went back at the end of the day, on the thinnest legitimate errand he could construct, a transfer acknowledgment that could have waited a week, mostly to learn whether the counter had gone back to being a counter.

It hadn’t. The records wing’s outer door stood propped for the evening collection, and through it he could see her at the far cabinets with half the lights off, working a drawer with the deliberate, metered calm of someone who had decided that if she kept her hands to a rhythm, the rest of her would eventually agree to match it. She didn’t see him. He didn’t make himself seen. Whatever his presence would have done to that rhythm, he had no right to find out just to know how she was.

Calen was in the corridor outside, as it happened, or not entirely as it happened, since Calen had a habit of being wherever the building’s weather was changing. She followed his glance through the propped door and let a silence do most of her talking before she added the rest.

”Mabry put in to swap off counter duty for the balance of the week,” she said. ”Archive shelving. Requested it herself, this afternoon. First time since she’s had the counter that she’s asked to be somewhere the public isn’t.” She didn’t look at him while she said it. ”I signed it without asking her why. I’m not asking you either. I’m telling you what the paperwork looks like from where I stand, in case it looks like something else from where you do.”

It looks like someone protecting herself.

”That it does.” Calen straightened off the wall, done, in her unceremonious way, with as much of the conversation as she’d come for. ”Nothing wrong with that. Most people in this building learn it earlier and cheaper than she’s learning it this week.”

He walked the long way back to his quarters, past the numbered wing with its stenciled doors and its silence, and found that what he carried out of the day wasn’t the word. The word was a fact now, and facts kept.

He carried her hands instead. How they hadn’t stopped moving the entire time she’d been telling him it was nothing.
