Subject Zero: Faceless

They reached the crest’s forward shoulder without contact, and Osei called the halt herself rather than waiting for anyone to ask for it.

Dawn had actually arrived somewhere in the last twenty minutes, unannounced, a small, ordinary event on a ridge that had seen worse things happen on it than a sunrise. Grey had gone to something with real color at the edges, enough now to make out individual faces instead of shapes wearing gear. Enough, too, to see how far up they’d climbed, and how much farther the crest sat above them.

Two minutes, maybe three, crouched behind a fold of rock that finally put something solid between Third Squad and the rest of the ridge — long enough for Hollis to check the dressing on a graze along his forearm that nobody had noticed him take, long enough for Ilsen to swap magazines and count what was left in the ones he kept. Nobody talked about the shelf. For those first two minutes, the not-talking felt almost like a decision everyone had made together without a vote.

Wren broke it first.

”You could’ve said something.” Not accusing, closer to bewildered, the words arriving faster than she’d apparently planned them. ”Back at the post, on the transport, any of it. Something like by the way.” She stopped, seemed to hear how that sounded against the ground they were sitting on, and didn’t try to fix it.

He had the slate out before he’d decided to use it. I didn’t know either.

She looked at that longer than the four words needed.

”That’s worse,” she said, and it wasn’t unkind, just true, and she left it there.

He turned the thought over while she went back to checking her own kit, not because he had a good answer but because turning it over was the only thing available to do with it now. If he’d expected anything, in the half-second before he’d had to try, he’d expected using it to feel like something, a door opening, a weight set down, some sensation big enough to match what it had done. It hadn’t felt like anything he had a name for. It had simply happened, the way falling happens once a foot has left the edge, no further negotiation required past the first decision.

Hollis hadn’t said anything yet — a real absence, from a man who’d made his distrust of this plain the night the squad first took him in. He’d finished the dressing on his own arm and was sitting with his back against the rock, rifle across his knees, looking at nothing in particular — the ridge, the pale wash of actual morning settling over it now, the space where the fortified position used to be, visible from here as a dark, wrong-shaped gap in the slope below them.

”Calder’s Ridge,” he said finally, to no one, or to all of them. ”Everybody kept saying it different ways after. Malfunctioned. Came apart. Lost control.” He looked over — not at Ashfall-Zero exactly, just past his shoulder, eyes deliberately short of the actual target. ”That wasn’t any of those words. That was aimed.”

Osei, working the earpiece with two fingers pressed to it, didn’t look up from whatever she was listening to.

”I don’t know what that means yet,” Hollis said, quieter. ”Figured I’d say it out loud instead of just carrying it.”

It wasn’t nothing, Ashfall-Zero wrote, and held the slate up long enough for it to be read, and no longer. I don’t have a better answer than that.

Hollis read it, and didn’t answer, and didn’t look away this time either, which was, itself, more of an answer than anything Sten’s ghost had gotten out of him in two years.

The Sight read what sat underneath that stillness anyway, without his asking it to. The plain, unfinished effort of a man trying to hold two facts that refused to share the same shape, a friend dead because a Classified asset had come apart, and a squadmate alive on this ridge because this one hadn’t.

”Wish you’d tried that on the listening post gauge instead of a live gun,” Ilsen said, to nobody, working the bolt on a rifle that had been cleaned twice. ”Would’ve saved the field sergeant a full page of paperwork.” Nobody laughed, but something in the fold of rock loosened a fraction anyway.

Cade said nothing at all, which from Cade meant nothing had changed.

Osei lowered her hand from the earpiece and didn’t waste the quiet on anything gentler than what she actually needed to say.

”Command copies the emplacement. They’re calling it a win.” Flat, relaying rather than editorializing, no evident opinion of her own in it. ”They also want to know how a position that size got built and manned without anybody’s overflight catching it, and they don’t have an answer, and neither do I.” She looked past them all, up toward the crest itself, close now, close enough that the grey light was starting to define its actual shape rather than just its silhouette. ”Which is the part I actually care about.”

She didn’t get to finish caring about it in peace. The scout car element, forward of the main force climbing from the valley, broke in over the same channel.

Third Squad crowded close enough to hear it raw rather than relayed.

Movement on the far slope. A column, company-sized by the scout’s rough count, moving up from the dug-in position the whole push was meant to make indefensible, with an unhurried, evidently pre-briefed purpose. The column moved around the crest rather than toward it, along a lower route the original approach plan had marked as impassable to anything but foot traffic.

”They’re not reinforcing the position we just took,” Osei said, working it out in real time — out loud, fast, no wasted motion, the method she brought to everything else. ”They’re moving to cut the road behind the main force before it ever reaches the ridge.” She looked at the gap where the fortified position used to be, and something in her face reset, the plan she’d been running since the mission briefing quietly filing itself under things that no longer applied. ”Whoever built that position knew we’d cross the shelf. This is the same intelligence, still working, on a bigger board than one squad.”

”Heavy element,” she said into the earpiece, moving as she said it. ”I need it faster than twenty minutes, and I need the road held, not just the ridge. Copy?”

The answer that came back was thinner than the question had been, half a sentence, garbled at the edges, the texture of a channel losing its signal rather than a speaker choosing to stop talking. Osei repeated the request, slower this time, spelling out the grid reference in full. The reply that came back the second time was worse than the first, not better, breaking apart into something that might have been a number and might have been nothing, a stretch of open static where a confirmation should have sat, then three words that survived intact enough to be certain of: ...element’s already committed...

Committed to what, and where, and for how long, none of it came through. Ferro’s own position, somewhere below them, with the main force and whatever was left of the original timetable, offered nothing further. Whatever channel had carried his voice this far up the ridge for the last five hours was thinning out when the squad needed it to hold.

She looked at the earpiece like it had personally disappointed her, then at the squad, six faces that had not signed up, an hour ago, for a mission whose extraction plan had just quietly stopped being a promise anyone could actually make.

”Command’s still there,” she said.

There wasn’t a version of the next few minutes that didn’t run through her first, and she hadn’t finished deciding it yet, visibly working the problem, jaw set, eyes on the crest and then on the valley and then back to the crest, weighing a ridge they’d half-taken against a road they were about to lose. Wren had gone quiet again, the earlier bewilderment folded away somewhere behind the same flat readiness the rest of the squad wore now. Hollis had his rifle up without anyone telling him to bring it up.

”We hold here,” Osei said finally, to all of them — announced only once it was final, same as every other call she’d made since the flare went up. ”This shoulder, not the crest, not for now. We dig in, we watch that column, and we wait for either the heavy element or a working channel, whichever shows up first.” She looked at Ashfall-Zero last, longer than she’d looked at anyone else, and didn’t ask him for anything at all, no report, no explanation, nothing about the shelf. Whatever accounting that still owed would keep. ”Positions. Now.”
