Subject Zero: Faceless

Nobody walked beside him.

He noticed it in his knees first — a half-step hesitation at the first corner, the body still braced for a hand that wasn’t going to land on his shoulder to steer him left instead of right. Four days of an escort roster taped to his door, and the habit had gone in deeper, faster, than a base full of officers arguing over his file had any right to expect. He corrected course on his own and kept walking, past a checkpoint where the guard read the order once, said nothing, and waved him through a gate that had needed a second signature every other night this week.

The command wing lit differently than the rest of the base — warmer, older fixtures. A single door at the end of the corridor stood open. No aide at a desk outside it. No name plate.

The room inside was smaller than he’d expected for something with this much silence riding on it. A desk, bare except for a single closed folder and a slate turned face-down. One chair on his side of it, pulled out.

The figure behind the desk was the one from the gallery corner. Up close, the arithmetic behind it didn’t change. Nothing in her read as afraid, nothing performing authority for his benefit — just even, working patience.

”Personal stationery,” the woman from the gallery said, before he could write the question. ”Command letterhead comes with three signatures and a routing copy for the brigadier’s office. I didn’t want either tonight.”

”Sit,” she said — no rank offered, no name, and something about the room made clear neither was coming. ”I’m not going to waste the time either of us has left this evening pretending this is a conversation between equals. It isn’t. I’d rather we both knew that going in.”

He sat.

”Ninety.” She opened the folder without looking down at it. ”Then one-ten. Then one-forty, and the panel had nothing left to give the instruments after that — not because you stopped. Because the equipment couldn’t keep pace with what you were doing without trying to. I read the technician’s log three times before I decided this conversation was worth having tonight instead of next week.”

You’ve been in that room before. In the gallery.

”Once. It was enough. I’m here for the same reason I was there — because your file stopped being only your file some while ago, and somebody in this command has to be the one keeping track of what it’s actually become.”

The other four.

”As of this month. The count has moved since you arrived, and not in the direction anyone hoped.” No hesitation, no weight added either. ”You are not the only Foundry recovery Meridian is currently deciding how to hold onto. You are, at present, the furthest along, the most closely watched, and — since Tuesday — the loudest argument either side of this building has for how the rest get handled.”

If I answer wrong, they answer for it too.

”If you answer at all, they answer because of it. There isn’t a version of tonight where your case stops setting the precedent. There’s only a version where you decide what the precedent says.”

Do they know. The other four. That a night like this one is coming for them too.

”Two of them do. One is still too unstable to be told anything at all.” A pause, brief. ”The fourth stopped being anyone’s decision to make three weeks ago. I mention that only so you understand the range of outcomes actually on the table tonight — not to frighten you into a particular answer. Fear makes for bad precedent.”

The offer, when it came, was plain, and she took her time laying it out.

Formal entry onto the Asset track, effective immediately, ahead of any Grade confirmation the board had yet to hand down. The seven-day review dissolved on the spot. Escort restrictions lifted. The composite file’s search continued under this office’s direct authority instead of sitting exposed to routine requisition — protected, she said, ”for as long as protecting it serves this arrangement.”

And if it stops serving the arrangement.

”Then it becomes exactly what it is right now. A file with two names attached to its access log instead of one, sitting somewhere a brigadier can still reach it if the wind changes. I’m not offering you a guarantee about what that search eventually turns up. I’m offering you the difference between one office actively protecting it and no office protecting it at all.”

In exchange: he stopped contesting his own classification. He accepted deployment and tasking at Meridian’s discretion.

”I won’t call it a rescue,” she said, ”because you’d see through that inside a sentence, and I don’t enjoy being seen through. It’s a transfer of custody. You’ve been the property of a question — what is he, and what do we do about it — since the moment you came through that vault door. Tonight I’m offering to become the answer instead.”

And if I refuse.

”Then the seven days run their course, the board reconvenes, and the argument that’s been building since your first review continues where it left off — with tonight’s conversation added to the file, because I don’t waste conversations either.”

You’re not offering me freedom.

”No,” she agreed, without a flicker of insult at having it said to her face. ”I’m offering you a leash with my name on it instead of six different hands that don’t talk to each other.”

She closed the folder.

”Three days remain on your review clock. I’d rather have your answer before it expires, but I won’t pretend the number is anything but administrative.” She rose. ”Yes puts four other names somewhere safer than they are tonight, and it puts a leash on you with a name attached instead of a committee. No costs you nothing you don’t have, and buys you nothing you don’t lack.”

”Yes or no,” she said. ”Which is it.”

He didn’t write anything at first.

He set the stylus on the glass and left it there, and did the thing eleven years had taught him to do with any offer — turned it over, looking for the table underneath. It was there. Deployment at Meridian’s discretion was a table with better manners. But he made himself read the other side of the ledger too, as the colonel had done with a redacted page: what the alternative actually held. Seven days of a room. A board that had voted once and would vote again with a cracked panel in evidence. A file with the woman’s face on it, sitting where the brigadier could reach it. Four other files, one of them closed, whose rooms would take their shape from whichever word he wrote.

Nobody had ever asked him to choose the shape of his own custody before. It was not, he understood, a kindness. It was still the first time.

Yes.

He looked at the word on the slate for a moment before turning it around to face her.

”Good.” She reached into the folder and drew out a second document, filled in, carrying today’s date. ”This was drawn up before you sat down. I want you to know that, not because it should change your answer, but because I’d rather you not find out later and wonder whether I already knew what you’d say.”

You expected yes.

”I hoped for yes. I’ve been wrong about hope before. I keep drawing up the paperwork anyway, because the alternative is making a man wait in a room while I write by hand what I could have had ready.”

The card itself read plainer than anything else in the room:

[DESIGNATION: ASHFALL-ZERO. STATUS: ASSET TRACK — CLASS I / SUBJECT. REVIEW: CLOSED.]

She signed it in front of him, once, without ceremony, and added her name below the liaison’s on the composite’s access log rather than replacing it — the one line she hadn’t described.

”One more thing before you go,” she said, closing the folder for the last time that night. ”The other four don’t get told what you chose. You don’t owe them an explanation. You already gave them the only thing that was ever actually yours to give.”

What did I give them.

”A precedent that didn’t need fear behind it to get you through this room.”

He stood, and found the room didn’t ask him to sit back down.

”Ashfall-Zero,” she said, and it was the first time she’d used the designation instead of avoiding a name for him entirely. ”Welcome to the part of this where I stop being the only difficult conversation you have tonight.”

The checkpoint at the end of the command wing had a single guard on it instead of two, and the guard didn’t ask for the order that used to buy him passage. He walked the length of a corridor without once feeling for a hand that wasn’t going to land on his shoulder.

The liaison stood where the corridor forked toward his quarters, arms crossed, not pretending she’d been doing anything but waiting.

”They wouldn’t tell me what room they’d put you in. Only that it existed, and that I wasn’t on the list for it.”

Asset track. Effective tonight.

She didn’t say anything for a moment.

”I wasn’t in that room,” she said finally. ”I want you to know that wasn’t my choice. I’d have been there if anyone had asked me, and nobody asked me, and I’ve been standing in this corridor for forty minutes deciding whether that was going to matter to me more than the fact that you’re standing here at all.” She uncrossed her arms. ”It matters less. I want that on the record too.”

I would have asked for you. I didn’t know I was allowed to ask for anything.

”You are now. That’s most of what tonight actually bought you, whatever else was in the paperwork.”

He counted, unprompted, every time she’d shown up in a doorway at the exact moment a form was about to define him instead of a person: the ward’s floor going dark, the board’s door, the designation card, and now this. Four times running was a pattern, and he kept the word for it to himself, for now.

”I don’t think this makes you less of a person to this place,” she said, quieter now. ”I think it makes you a harder one to lose track of. Those aren’t the same thing, but they’re not nothing, either.”

That felt more like a transaction than a kindness.

”No,” she agreed. ”It rarely is, from that office.” She was quiet for a moment. ”I don’t know when I’ll be standing in a corridor like this one with you again. That’s the part nobody’s telling either of us tonight, and I’d rather say it myself than let you find it out from a posting order.”

He wrote nothing. He stood there instead, in the amber light this base saved for after hours, and let the not-knowing sit between them.

The runner found them before either of them had decided how to end the silence on their own terms.

”Transfer orders,” the runner said, to both of them at once, unsure which one outranked the moment. ”Effective at dawn.”

The liaison took the page before he could, read it once, and her face did the thing it always did when she was about to hand him something true instead of something easy.

”Not here,” she said. ”Not this base at all.”

She held it out to him, and for the first time all night, her hand wasn’t entirely steady. He took the page from a hand that let go of it late.

The order read shorter than anything else command had put in front of him tonight — no folder, no second sheet waiting underneath it, four lines in a clerk’s hand and a seal he didn’t recognize sitting above a signature block left entirely blank.

[TRANSFER ORDER — ASHFALL-ZERO. DESTINATION: NINTH FRONT, FORWARD COMMAND. REPORTING OFFICER: TO BE ASSIGNED ON ARRIVAL. EFFECTIVE: DAWN.]

He read it twice. The second pass didn’t turn up a name hiding anywhere the first one had missed.

”Ninth Front,” the liaison said, reading it over his shoulder. Her voice dropped a register on the second word. ”That’s not a rear posting. That’s a working front.”

You know it.

”I know of it. Nobody I’ve talked to has actually been.” She folded the order back along its original crease before handing it to him a second time, as if the folding bought her a few more seconds before she had to let it go for good. ”Whoever wrote ’reporting officer, to be assigned’ either hasn’t decided who gets you yet, or decided and isn’t telling this base. Either way, you’re not walking into a room with a name in it. You never have been.”
