Subject Zero: Faceless

Halstead on a liberty afternoon had a rhythm to it now that hadn’t existed the first time he’d walked through its gate and let a market and some playing children unsettle him with how ordinary they were. He knew, by now, which stalls sold bread that sold out before noon and which ones never did. He knew the fountain ran dry on wash-days. He knew Nell’s corner of the square by the quiet that gathered around it, distinct from the market’s general noise.

A cluster of children ran the length of the square ahead of him, playing the same game Wren’s hand-drawn map had once tried to explain, one child masked in a strip of cloth, arms out, the rest scattering and shrieking every time the blind hands came close to catching one. He’d learned by now not to read anything into it beyond what it was. Children needed a shape to chase that wasn’t real danger, and a game built around a faceless, groping figure had existed in this town long before he’d ever walked through its gate to give the shape an unwelcome resemblance. He watched them for exactly as long as it took to cross the square, and then didn’t watch them anymore.

The two old men had their board out at the square’s north corner, a new argument indistinguishable from the one running the first afternoon he’d ever crossed this market. This time the one in the wine-colored cap flagged him down before he could pass, one hand raised with the unearned confidence of a man who had decided the whole square was his jury pool.

”You. Big fellow. Settle something.” He stabbed a finger at the board, where a flat carved piece sat at the end of a long straight furrow of a move. ”He says a piece that only moves straight can’t threaten two things at once. I say he’s been losing to it for thirty years and ought to know better by now.”

Rook considered the board. He knew almost nothing of the game’s actual rules. He’d gathered them in fragments, over weeks of passing, without ever asking. The slow, straight piece sat on a line that pinned one of the bare-headed man’s pieces and starved another, both at once, having done nothing but advance.

Two, he wrote, and turned the slate.

The capped man crowed. The other threw up both hands at the injustice of an outside verdict and began, immediately, to argue with the slate instead. Rook stood a moment longer than the dispute required, oddly reluctant to leave a corner of the world where the only thing anyone wanted from him was a ruling on a board game, and where the piece that moved straight and slow had, in fact, been underestimated one time too many.

He didn’t tell them what he’d named himself. It was enough that the board already agreed.

Nell had a customer ahead of him when he arrived at her stall, an old man dictating something slow and careful to a daughter three towns over, and Rook waited at the edge of it without minding the wait, watching her hand move steady across the page in a script neater than anything the compound’s own clerks produced.

”Rook.” She finished the line, folded the letter, and only then looked up properly, pleasure crossing her face plain and unguarded. ”Sit. I’ve got maybe twenty minutes before the Hallorans’ boy comes to dictate his weekly complaint about his brother, and I’d rather spend it on you.”

He sat. The stool at her stall had a permanent lean to the left that he’d stopped correcting for weeks ago.

Business good.

”Business is always good right after a harvest and always terrible right before one. You’ve caught me on the good side of that particular seesaw.” She began sorting a stack of finished letters by the names on their fronts, hands moving without needing her eyes for it. ”You want to hear something, before I get to the part where I ask you the usual boring things about how you’re sleeping and whether the mask still chafes at the jaw.”

Always.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

”There’s a story going around — three separate people have told it to me now, which is how I know it’s become an actual thing rather than one person’s fever dream — about a woman two towns north of here. Cotter’s Bend, or near enough to it.” Nell said it the way she said most gossip, with the easy relish of someone who collected stories the same way she collected the letters, for the pleasure of the telling rather than any stake in whether they were true. ”Apparently she’s been having the same dream, over and over, for months now. A man with no face. Not scarred, not hooded — just nothing there at all where a face ought to be. He doesn’t threaten her in it. He doesn’t do anything, really, except be there, and she wakes up every time feeling like she’s just missed catching something important he was trying to tell her.”

She reached for the next letter in her stack, entirely unaware that the world on the other side of the counter had gone very quiet.

”Her own family thinks she’s touched. The local priest apparently blessed her twice and it hasn’t done a thing to stop it. My favorite version — and I do mean favorite, purely as a story — has her walking two miles in the rain last month to describe the dream to a fortune-reader in the next village over, who told her, and I quote whoever told me this third-hand, that some dreams aren’t dreams at all, they’re a door somebody on the other side keeps knocking on.” Nell laughed, short and genuinely delighted, the sound of someone who found the whole thing charming precisely because she believed none of it. ”Which is a wonderful thing to tell a frightened woman for a coin, whatever it actually means. Halstead’s had at least four versions of this exact kind of tale in the years I’ve kept this stall — a ghost with unfinished business, a dead soldier’s sweetheart who won’t stop waiting at the crossroads. People need somewhere to put the things they can’t explain about their own heads. A faceless man in a stranger’s dream is just this season’s shape for it.”

He had gone very still, something deeper sitting underneath it that had stopped his hands mid-motion on the counter’s edge and left them there.

Does the story say anything else about him. The man.

Nell glanced up, mild surprise at the question rather than anything sharper. ”Not much. He never speaks in it, from what I’ve heard. She says it doesn’t feel like a nightmare, which is the strange part everyone keeps repeating back to me — usually the interesting dreams are the frightening ones. This one, she says, just feels like grief. Like missing someone she’s never actually met.” She shrugged, reaching to straighten the stack again. ”Small towns manufacture this sort of thing out of nothing more often than you’d think. Give it another season and it’ll be a different animal entirely by the time it reaches us — a wolf with a man’s eyes, a drowned bride, whatever the next telling needs it to be to stay interesting.”

You don’t think there’s anything to it.

”I think there’s a lonely woman two towns over and a fortune-reader who needed the coin. But I like that you asked. Most people just laugh and move on to whichever gossip comes next.” She tilted her head, studying him properly for the first time since she’d started the story, the easy warmth in her face shading, just slightly, toward something more careful. ”You’ve gone quiet in a way you don’t usually go quiet. Did I say something?”

No. It’s a good story.

It wasn’t an answer, and they both understood that it wasn’t, and Nell, who had learned, across a dozen visits now, which of his silences could be pushed at and which couldn’t, let it stand rather than press for the one underneath it. ”It’s a good story,” she agreed, easy again, sliding back into the rhythm of the afternoon as though the last minute hadn’t happened. ”Now. Tell me honestly about the jaw.”

He answered her, and meant almost none of it, his hands finally unlocking from the counter’s edge while the rest of him stayed where the story had left him.

The Hallorans’ boy arrived on schedule and mid-grievance, talking before he’d reached the stool, and the afternoon folded Rook out of its center as neatly as it had folded him in, Nell’s attention pivoting to the business of a brother who had, it emerged, committed some unforgivable crime involving a borrowed knife and a lie about a fence post. She waved Rook off with two fingers and a look that said come back when you’re ready to tell me the true version, and took up her pen, and the town went on being the town.

That was the part he kept turning over on the walk back, almost as much as the story itself. For as long as he’d had it, the face had been his alone to carry, a fact kept and believed in because believing in it was the only thing that had ever kept him upright, first through the Foundry’s rooms and then through every room after. A stranger had just handed it back to him secondhand, folded into an ordinary rumor with a coin attached to the telling, as though it had never belonged only to him. The square hadn’t even paused. The market had absorbed the strangest sentence anyone had said to him in months on the same afternoon it absorbed a boy’s complaint about a fence post, and at the same rates.
