Subject Zero: Faceless

They spent the second use on the middle strongpoint rather than the far one, Osei’s call, made in the four seconds anyone had to make it, on the reasoning that the middle position covered the only approach to the relay building itself while the far one only covered empty ground.

Breath first. He got as far as the first beat.

Stance came, or something that would have passed for it on Reyes’s range. But the narrowing wouldn’t. His attention went to the middle strongpoint and would not stay there; it slid, as a hand slides on a wet rail, toward the far position, toward the tree line, toward the ten people breathing around him, toward everything at once. He dragged it back. It slid again. The second strongpoint’s fire chewed a fresh line along the rocks a meter above his head, and he understood, with Reyes’s curve laid out in memory as clearly as she’d drawn it, which part of the curve he was standing on. The second pull, the one that answered but couldn’t be steered.

He pulled anyway.

It came up thinner than the first and cost more before it had finished coming, the whiteness arriving not at the edges but in a sheet, the ringing gone from hum to something with a blade in it, his legs deciding on their own to stop being legs. He went down on one knee against a rock face and held the pull where it was, aimed, by nothing he could have named, just the refusal to let go of the one thing he was trying to point it at.

It landed. Most of it. The middle strongpoint came apart along its gun-slits and stopped firing, and a second, smaller wrongness bloomed thirty meters to its left, where a stand of scrub went up in a slow bloom of dust and torn root. Wide. Not as wide as the range. Wide enough that Cade, who’d been moving on that side, hit the ground with a speed that had nothing to do with training.

”He’s clear,” Osei said on the channel, before anybody could ask it. ”Cade’s clear. Move.”

The far strongpoint, cut off from whatever coordination had linked the first two, went quiet rather than risk the same fate alone. Cade and Ilsen pinned it in place with rifle fire while the rest of the column pushed through the gap, and he went with them on legs that came back to him grudgingly, one at a time, like something being returned by a lender who’d rather have kept it.

The relay building itself turned out to be smaller than the terrain had suggested, a low concrete shell set into the valley wall, one door facing the approach, no windows anyone could see, the kind of structure built to keep weather off equipment rather than to be fought over. Renner’s two unhurt operators took the door. Third Squad took the ground either side of it, Osei’s hand signals moving people into place with an economy that made speech look like a luxury other units could afford.

The breach charge was small, a shaped thing no bigger than a ration tin, set against the door’s hinge side, and it did its work with a sound more felt than heard. The door went inward. The operators went in after it, fast and low, and the first room answered them with fire.

Ashfall-Zero was fourth through. He had time to register the shape of the room, long, narrow, consoles along both walls, a doorway at the far end with light behind it, and then the fight was simply happening, at a range where the rifle’s sights were an affectation and every decision was made with the whole body. A man came up from behind a console on the left with a sidearm and Ilsen put him down before Ashfall-Zero had finished turning. Another was on the floor between two banks of dead glass, wounded or hiding, and Wren kicked the weapon away from his hand and put her boot on his wrist and kept moving, because that was what the drill said you did with a man who wasn’t a threat yet and might become one.

The second room was worse. Whoever held it had understood the door was the only way in and had put a table across it. Renner’s lead operator went over the table instead of around it and took a bayonet along the ribs for the choice, a long shallow tear that would bleed for an hour and kill nobody, and then he and Osei were through, and the room was a matter of seconds. One man with his hands up before anyone had decided to let him. Another, older, going for a console rather than a weapon, and Cade’s rifle stock finding the side of his head before his fingers finished whatever they had been reaching to do. A third on his knees before Ashfall-Zero came through the door, hands laced behind his head, a uniform slightly better kept than the others’, watching the room fill with the mask and the rifles and the blood with an expression that gave nothing away and had clearly been trained not to.

It was over in under a minute. Four enemy personnel alive, disarmed, kneeling against a wall of dead consoles under Third Squad’s rifles. One dead in the first room. Renner’s operator sitting against the overturned table with his shirt open and Wren’s dressing going on under his arm, swearing steadily and without much heat, as though the wound were an administrative error.

The equipment itself was stranger up close than the briefing had made room for, consoles without dials, banks of Core-glass gone dark in a pattern that matched no relay Ilsen or Cade had ever pulled security on, and no antenna array anywhere on the structure that anyone could point to. Wren walked the length of the main room once and said what the room was thinking: ”What did this place even talk through?” The four men kneeling against the wall weren’t offering one.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Osei called it in on the recovered relay itself, her voice worn thin — she’d spent everything she had to spend an hour ago, and was running now on whatever didn’t need her permission to keep going. ”Corvale secured. Four prisoners, one KIA on our side, two wounded, one of them not walking, structure intact for exploitation.” She looked to Renner for confirmation and got a short nod. ”Ninth Actual copies. Command wants the Corps Intelligence officer’s assessment before extraction authorization.”

That’s her, Ashfall-Zero wrote, meaning Renner, who had moved to the prisoners and was studying each face with an attention that read, even from across the room, like she already knew which one she was looking for.

She didn’t ask any of them anything. She read collars, hands, boots, one man’s boots resoled where the others’ were worn through, his palms uncallused by wire-work, the pale band on one wrist where a technician’s instrument cuff would ride, and sorted the four men in under a minute without a word spoken, moving down the line at the pace of somebody confirming a conclusion rather than reaching one. Then she posted her operators at the room’s corners, the cut one included, one hand pressed to Wren’s dressing, told Osei’s people to water the prisoners, and stood a while in the middle of the wrecked equipment, looking at the dead consoles as though the intelligence she actually wanted were sitting just behind their glass, in reach of anybody with the right kind of hands. Wren watched the sorting with open professional admiration and visible unease, both at once, which was, by then, roughly the whole squad’s settled opinion of Corps Intelligence.

She found him afterward, away from the others, near the doorway where the second strongpoint’s fire had chewed a long scar into the frame. Her voice had dropped the clinical register entirely, the first time since the command tent that Ashfall-Zero had heard something underneath it. She stood so the prisoners couldn’t see her face while she spoke.

”The tactical objective is complete. What I’m about to tell you wasn’t in Marrow’s briefing, because Marrow doesn’t know it, and Ferro doesn’t know it, and Osei is about to find out at the same time you do.” She glanced once toward the prisoners, then back. ”Corps Intelligence didn’t attach me to this operation only to destroy a relay. We attached me to it because Corvale’s own signals officer is very likely standing against that wall right now, and a destroyed relay tells us nothing about how this coordination network actually works. A dead one, at the moment of a kill, tells us everything you saw on that crest and considerably more.”

For a long moment Ashfall-Zero didn’t write anything at all.

You want me to kill a prisoner. Not in a fight. Not because he’s a threat. Because of what happens after.

”I want you to understand exactly what I’m asking before you answer it.” Renner faced the mask squarely, and to her credit didn’t look away from what she was asking. ”Static isn’t controllable — Reyes’s own report says so, and nothing about tonight contradicts it. I can’t order the pull itself. What I can order is the kill that triggers it, on a man who is currently disarmed, restrained, and no longer a threat to anyone in this building. And the Technical Division’s working rule is that it triggers on one thing and no other. Not a strike. Not a round from across a room. Your hands on the man, close enough to touch. Three positions went down tonight and gave you nothing, and that is exactly why I am standing here asking you instead of asking for artillery. What that pull shows you afterward could tell Corps how this network coordinates its defenses in real time — which means every position like Corvale, on every front, stops being able to do to the next squad what it very nearly did to this one tonight.”

That’s not a small thing to weigh against.

”I know. I wouldn’t be standing here asking if it were.”

Then weigh what you’re actually holding. He wrote it without hurry, making her wait on each word. Static has happened once. You’ve read what it pulled. A carved bird. A kitchen table. A daughter’s name — the last thing that mattered to him, not the last thing that mattered to you. Nothing about his unit, his orders, or the gun he’d been firing ten seconds before. Tell me what makes you confident a signals officer dies thinking about his network.

”Nothing makes me confident.” She didn’t reach for a better answer than the true one. ”One documented pull, and it surfaced what the man loved instead of what he knew. Analysis believes the loading matters, that a man dying three meters from the machine his whole war ran through might surface the machine instead. Believes. It’s a theory with a sample of one, and the sample argues against it.” She didn’t look away from the mask, and didn’t blink her way around it. ”So call it what it is. A bet. I’m asking to place it with your body and his life as the stake.”

”This is a lawful order from Corps Intelligence, and I have the authority to give it. I also know what it would mean to ask a man who spent years having things taken out of him against his will to now take something out of someone else the same way, on command, for a result.” She stepped back, giving him the room the question deserved. ”The tactical mission is already a success either way. This is the part that’s actually your choice, and I’m not going to make it for you by pretending it isn’t one.”

Behind her, the four prisoners knelt in the wreckage of the room they’d apparently run, one of them, the one who’d been on his knees before anyone told him to be, mid-thirties, an officer’s insignia at the collar, watching the exchange he couldn’t understand with a stillness that suggested he suspected, without being able to prove it, that his life had just become the subject of the conversation.

The Sight would have told him what sat under that stillness, if he’d aimed it. He didn’t aim it. Knowing would only have made the man heavier, a wife, a mother, a room somewhere with his boots by the door, and Renner’s question needed answering. Make the man specific, and no order on earth could reach him. Keep him general, and anything could.

Ashfall-Zero looked at him, then at Renner, then down at the slate that had never once, across every impossible thing this front had asked of him, been handed a question with no answer he could live with on either side of it.

Give me a minute, he wrote.
