Subject Zero: Faceless

Osei’s line was sitting in the air between them, unanswered. Whatever you’ve got that isn’t a rifle. Three days of instruments had measured what came off him without once asking him to send it anywhere; the Foundry had taken readings off whatever came out of him under restraint, and never once asked him to reach for it on purpose. Whatever Calibration was, it had only ever been something done to him. He had never once been the one holding it.

Another burst walked the last few inches toward Wren’s shoulder. She flinched into rock that had nothing left to give her.

He didn’t have time to not know how.

If it doesn’t answer, he thought, fast, she doesn’t get up again. He let the thought do its work, then set it aside. Osei would have done the same with anything that wasn’t the next five seconds.

Find the thread again, he thought, grasping for the one comparison that fit, the colonel’s residual channel, reached for blind, found by some fusion of searching and instinct he couldn’t cleanly separate. He turned that same reaching inward instead of outward, past pulse and muscle and the flat certainty of his own heartbeat, down to wherever the gauges had been reading from all along.

It was there. It had always been there. It simply hadn’t occurred to anyone, including him, that it might answer to being asked.

For one full second — long enough to hear a third burst leave the enemy weapon, long enough to see the angle it was walking toward Wren’s shoulder — nothing answered. He reached again, harder, a second try at a door handle that hadn’t turned the first time, half-convinced this door didn’t open from his side. Whatever the gauges had measured off him for three straight days had always come easily, effortlessly, output climbing whether he tried or not. Asking it to go somewhere specific was apparently a different transaction entirely, and for that one second he didn’t know if it was a transaction his body was willing to make.

Then it was there — not found, exactly. More like something that had been standing behind him the whole time finally turning to look when he said its name.

He opened everything he had.

There was no ceremony to it. No light, no rising hum, nothing an instrument could have caught climbing toward a red line before it happened. It simply arrived, all at once, as sudden as the flare had been over the shelf, too far along by the time it registered as a warning. He felt it leave him like blood leaving a wound too large to notice yet. Not painful in the moment, just wrong, a subtraction happening somewhere behind where pain usually lived.

The air across the shelf changed first. Not wind — something that used the shape of wind without being it, a pressure that reached the enemy position half a second before he understood he’d sent it there. Rock dust lifted off the ground in a line pointing where his attention had gone.

Then the gun stopped.

Mid-cycle. No jam. No reload. A dead stop. A held breath. Then the position’s face, the angled stone that had turned every round Ilsen and Hollis put into it, came apart along a line that had not been a fault in the rock a second earlier. No fire. No blast. Silence, total, where a threat had been.

His knees found the ground before he decided to let them.

The ringing in his ears wasn’t sound. Something had gone out of him in a straight line and not come back, and his body was tallying the absence. A whiteness at the edges of what little he saw with, a weight behind his sternum that hadn’t been there a minute ago and wasn’t leaving on its own.

Cheap, he thought, distantly, and didn’t believe it. That was not cheap.

”Position’s down.” Osei’s voice, tighter than he’d ever heard her pitch it, cutting through whatever the ringing was rather than around it. ”Wren — Wren, move. Now, while it’s down, go.”

She went. He watched her cross the last stretch of shelf at a dead run, low and fast, and drop into cover on the near side without the ground finding her once.

She looked back at him once, from behind her new cover, before Osei’s voice pulled her attention forward again. He couldn’t read what was in it. He didn’t try. Ocular Bypass stayed where it was, unaimed, unused; whatever had just gone out of him had taken something with it that made reaching for a second sense feel, for the moment, like asking too much of a body that had given away more than it meant to.

Silence took the shelf — not peace, just the quiet that follows something breaking, waiting to be filled by whoever speaks first.

Ilsen had gone still in a way that had nothing to do with tactical caution — rifle up, eyes not on the ridge anymore but on him, wide with something visibly being recalculated that he’d thought was settled. Hollis hadn’t moved at all. He didn’t need Ocular Bypass to read what was underneath that stillness; he could have named it from memory alone, the same stillness from the rehearsal slope worn down to its rawest possible version, Calder’s Ridge, close enough to touch, close enough that Hollis’s hand had drifted, almost, toward the sidearm at his hip before some slower part of him told it not to.

Cade broke off his flank position and came back along the shelf at a controlled walk, weapon up, eyes flicking once toward the ruined emplacement and then away from it, fast — he’d clearly decided he didn’t need to look at that twice.

Osei crossed to him last. She didn’t ask if he was hurt. She looked at the emplacement, looked at him on one knee in the dirt with both hands flat against the rock to keep the shelf from tilting under him, and something in her face closed a loop Ferro’s transfer file had never quite managed to finish, Class I, Subject, the pending field assessment, the anomalous flag, all of it landing, in real time, on a number none of the paperwork had a box for yet.

”On your feet,” she said, quiet enough that only he’d hear it — quiet rather than gentle, and nowhere near warm. The voice of someone filing away how much room the rest of this operation was going to need to leave him. ”We’re not done climbing.”

He got up. It cost him more than it should have to make that look easy.

Osei kept her hand near his elbow a half-second longer than balance required, then let go and thumbed her earpiece live. ”Command, Third Squad. Emplacement neutralized, near-slope shelf. One asset use, defensive, witnessed.” A pause, listening to whatever came back. ”Copy. Report filed on return.” She didn’t look at him while she said it. He understood, distantly, that this counted as a courtesy — the paperwork already moving without needing him to be part of the sentence that started it.

Behind her, Wren was breathing hard against her cover, alive, unhit, staring across the shelf at where the position used to be and then, slowly, at him instead. Ilsen’s rifle had come down but his eyes hadn’t. Hollis’s hadn’t moved from him at all.

They asked what I was capable of, he thought, and found, for once, that the thought didn’t need the shape of a negation to land. Just the plain fact of it, sitting where a question used to be. Now they know. All of them, all at once, in a place none of us can take it back from.

Osei was moving up the shelf, calling the advance in the same voice she’d used for everything since the flare went up. Third Squad followed her, one at a time, past the wrecked position and the silence coming off it. He fell in last, behind Hollis, who did not look back at him again and did not look away from the ridge ahead either — a decision made and not yet named, the same as everyone else’s.

Above them, the crest was closer now by the length of one collapsed position.

His legs found the climb again, but not cleanly — a hitch on the first step that hadn’t been there before the shelf, gone by the third and back again by the tenth, a small unreliable thing he chose not to examine too closely while there was still ground left to cover. Whatever the surge had spent, it hadn’t billed itself all at once. He suspected, without any evidence yet to weigh it against, that it meant to keep collecting for a while.
