Subject Zero: Faceless

Corvale came into view an hour before the plan called for it to, because the valley wall it was dug into rose sooner than Renner’s imagery had shown, and the relay’s outer perimeter sat lit and active well before anyone had expected a visible target. Osei called the halt from a tree line two hundred meters out, and for the first time since the ford, Ashfall-Zero had a clear look at what five hours of movement and one dead scout had bought them.

It was worse than a single fortified position. A forward strongpoint anchored the near slope, sandbagged, gun-slitted, the kind of thing Calibration had answered for once already at Aldern Ridge. Behind it, spaced along the valley floor at intervals too even to be accidental, sat two more, smaller, harder to see, each one covering the approach to the relay building itself from a different angle.

Three positions, not the one we planned for.

”Confirmed,” Renner said, glass to her eye. ”Whoever built this expected what you did to that first ambush’s cousin back on the ridge. One position, one strike, done. They spread the defense so no single hit ends it.” She lowered the glass. ”Reyes’s assessment says you’re good for one controlled use, reliably. Maybe a second. There are three positions between us and that building.”

Osei took the glass from her without asking and ran it across the valley floor twice, slow, before handing it back. ”Interlocking arcs. Any element that commits to one position gets taken under fire by the other two. Somebody sited that with instruments, not instinct.” She looked at the relay building, small and lit and patient behind its three layers. ”Doss called imagery a rumor. This is what the rumor left out.”

The plan Osei and Renner built in the next ten minutes was simple, out of necessity rather than design. Third Squad would suppress and flank the near strongpoint while Ashfall-Zero took it out directly, opening the approach; Renner’s remaining three operators would use the breach in cover to move on the relay building itself while the second and third strongpoints were reorienting. It depended on the first strike landing clean, fast, and precisely aimed, scaled to a single target, controlled the way Reyes had spent five days teaching him to control it.

I can do this once. Cleanly.

”Then that’s the mission,” Osei said. ”One clean use. We handle the rest with rifles, same as always.”

The squad moved into position by hand signal, no talk, and for two long minutes the valley held its arrangement, three guns that didn’t know yet, ten people who did, and a stretch of night air between them where the whole plan balanced. Wren settled in on his left, close enough that her shoulder touched his, and left it there. Not steadying him. Being there while he steadied himself. There was a difference, and she had learned it before he had.

Breath first. He ran the beat, and the valley shrank to the size of one sandbagged gun-slit two hundred meters off. Stance. Knees, weight, the loaner rifle set down against a tree root without looking, because his hands had learned that motion on a different slope. Then the narrowing, Reyes’s third beat, the one that had taken him four hours to find on a range and took him four seconds here. Attention pulled in from the tree line and the squad and the two positions he wasn’t allowed to think about yet, down to a single opening in a single wall.

It answered. It came when called, the size he’d asked for, and went where he sent it. A directed pulse, aimed and scaled, took the near strongpoint apart from the inside out, no wasted force, no collateral spread into the tree line beside it, the target and nothing more. Third Squad’s suppressing fire covered the half-second of silence that followed, and then the position simply wasn’t shooting back anymore.

The familiar cost arrived on schedule, the ringing that wasn’t sound, the whiteness crowding the edges of what he could see, the ache settling in behind his sternum where Reyes’s readouts had always predicted it would. His legs held. Barely, but they held. And under the cost, something Reyes had promised and he hadn’t believed. The difference between a thing that happened to him and a thing he had done.

Clean. Once. Like she said I could.

Wren’s hand found his shoulder for half a second, not quite a question, entirely an acknowledgment, and then the squad was moving, because a war didn’t pause to let anyone appreciate a controlled use of Calibration for longer than that.

The move through the breach had been rehearsed in the ten minutes available, and it showed in both directions, Third Squad’s part crisp, the seams between squad and second element less so. Renner’s operators moved in a style all their own, faster than caution and quieter than speed, three shapes crossing the dead strongpoint’s ground without once bunching. Osei’s people flowed around them rather than with them. It worked.

The second strongpoint reoriented faster than anyone had planned for.

It shouldn’t have. A position that far from the first strike, with no direct line of sight to it, had no reasonable way to know within seconds that the near strongpoint had fallen. And yet its guns swung toward the breach as Renner’s operators started through it, cutting one of them down before he’d covered ten meters, the fire disciplined and immediate in a way that read as coordination.

The operator went down between one stride and the next and stayed down, alive, his leg swept from under him, dark spreading below the knee, dragging himself sideways with his rifle in one hand while the breach he’d been running for filled up with disciplined fire behind him. Ten meters. The plan had needed him to cover forty.

”They’re linked,” Renner said, dropping flat, voice gone tight. ”Not by radio. Nothing on that frequency band. Something else. They knew the first position fell the instant it fell, and they knew exactly where to point because of it.” She looked at Ashfall-Zero, and for the first time since the tent at the Ninth Front, something in her clinical register cracked. ”This isn’t a defense built to survive a Classified asset. This is a defense built to survive you specifically. Somebody gave them enough to prepare for what you did on that shelf, and enough time to build three of these instead of one.”

On the squad channel, nobody wasted the half-second on being afraid of what that meant. Osei’s voice was moving fire before Renner finished the sentence, Cade and Ilsen’s answering bursts splitting between the second position and the third — but underneath the discipline, faint and real, ran the thing Aldern Ridge had planted in all of them: the enemy held a map of Third Squad’s decisions that Third Squad had never been shown.

The compromised intelligence. It runs both directions.

”That’s my read too, and I don’t like it any better than you do.” She was moving, dragging her wounded operator back toward cover, the second strongpoint’s fire chewing the ground where he’d stood a moment before. ”Reyes said a second use tonight is a real cost. I need you to tell me right now whether that cost is one you can pay twice more, because there are two positions left and we are not getting through this valley on rifles alone.”

She had done it all in the one motion, the drag, the assessment, the ask, without raising her voice past the level the fire made necessary, and he understood something about her then that the command tent hadn’t shown him. Renner under load shed everything decorative and kept only throughput. No blame yet, no revision of the plan she’d authored, no half-second spent on being wrong in front of subordinates. Later there would be an accounting; her face promised that much.

Ashfall-Zero looked past her, at the second strongpoint’s guns swinging to bracket the tree line, at the third one further out doing the same, at a defense built, deliberately, expensively, with real advance knowledge, around the shape of what he could do. Whatever Corvale actually was, it had stopped being a relay the moment its guns had known where to point before he’d fired a second shot.

He took stock before he answered her, because she deserved a real count and so did the squad. The ringing had faded to a hum. The whiteness had pulled back from the edges. Behind his sternum the ache sat where it had sat since Aldern Ridge, deeper now, a coin dropped down a well that hadn’t finished falling. Reyes had spent five days teaching him what each of those meant. None of her columns covered doing this arithmetic under fire, with the answer standing three meters away wanting it in the next breath.

I can pay it once more. I don’t know about twice.

”Then we’d better be right about which one we spend it on,” Renner said, ”because we’re not getting a third guess.”
